6. Optimization of use-wear detection and characterization on stone tool surfaces

Abstract

Abstract Debates and doubt around the interpretation of use-wear on stone tools called for the development of quantitative analysis of surfaces to complement the qualitative description of traces. Recently, a growing number of studies showed that prehistoric activities can be discriminated thanks to quantitative characterization of stone tools surface alteration due to use. However, stone tool surfaces are microscopically very heterogeneous and the calculated parameters may highly vary depending on the areas selected for measurement. Indeed, it may be impacted by the effects from the raw material topography and not from the altered zones only, if non-altered part of the surface is included in the measurement. We propose here to discuss this issue and present a workflow involving the use of masks to separate worn and unworn parts of the surface. Our results show that this step of extraction, together with suitable filtering, could have a high impact on the optimization of the detection and thus characterization of use traces. This represents the basis for future automatic routines allowing the detection, extraction and characterization of wear on stone tools.

Abstract

Excavation campaigns conducted at the Pécel‐Kis hársas site (Hungary) between 2014 and 2017 yielded the remains of a mature female woolly rhinoceros (Coelodonta antiquitatis) and six lithic artefacts. Radiocarbon dating confirmed that the rhinoceros died ca. 20.4k cal a bp, at the very end of the Last Glacial Maximum and, considering the position of the artefacts when found, it was probably killed by Epigravettian hunters. Based on dental analyses of the specimen, a vigorous lichen‐ (and possibly moss‐)consuming diet could be inferred for the end of the animal's lifetime. Based on Sr results, we can exclude the possibility of long‐range migration. In accordance with the optimum environmental demands of the foraging lichen, the low δ18O value of osseous material implies a relatively cold contemporaneous climate with a calculated mean annual air temperature of around 0.7 °C. Meanwhile, the extremely low δ15N value may have resulted from the proximity of the discontinuous permafrost zone and some intensive soil dislocation. Consequently, poor vegetation and an open, tundra‐like habitat can be assumed to have been dominant at the site at that time, which is also supported by palaeoenvironmental modeling experiments. Abstract

International audience; Polyhedrons, spheroids and bolas are enigmatic cubic to rounded stone objects present in lithic series since the Lower Pleistocene. These objects are considered both as final phase nuclei or firing pins and many other more or less fanciful hypotheses have been proposed in the past. Most of these attributions have never been demonstrated. These objects are frequent in Africa and present in Asia since the Acheulean but are much rarer in Europe. Artifacts with same shape are also known in recent archaeological and ethnographic contexts in America. The aim of the project is to identify the characteristics that make it possible to determine the methods of manufacture and use of these objects. The question will be addressed by mobilizing a broad comparative approach, including recent archaeological, ethnographic and experimental data through 1) the realization of an ethnoarchaeological synthesis, 2) a reconstitution, through experimental archaeology and wear analysis, of the mode of manufacture and possible forms of use, 3) an analysis of archaeological material from the Lower Palaeolithic in Europe and Africa. The results of the archaeological, experimental, wear analysis and ethnographic study of polyhedrons, spheroids and bolas will make it possible to propose new hypotheses on the role and the method of manufacture of these enigmatic objects abandoned in prehistoric sites. It will also fuel debates on the presence of apparently identical objects in archaeological records that are distant in time and space and discuss the question of objects from independent local histories made by different hominids or objects migrating with populations and adapting to the new needs of these populations. These lithic objects can indeed be considered as "trace elements" that can help to identify the possible dispersion of human groups and/or traditions in Eurasia. They can also be vectors for identifying the modes of adaptation of populations to varied (mineral and vegetal) or new environments, inducing the loss of certain elements of the "toolbox" or a reorientation of manufacturing methods according to needs and available materials.

32. The impact of white patina in obscuring use-wear traces

Abstract

Poster presented at the 18th UISPP conference in Paris. Abstract: To examine the effect of white patination on use-wear analysis, we produced replica artifacts and used them in wood scraping tasks. We then compared casts of these use- traces before and after experimentally induced patination. We found that patination does not always obfuscate microscopic use-wear traces dependent on lithic raw material type and intensity of patination. This indicates that assemblages that have traditionally been overlooked for use-wear analysis may indeed be suitable for (limited) study.

Abstract

International audience; Middle Paleolithic local raw materials status: Technological and morphofunctional studies of quartz and quartzite artefacts of the site of Payre (MIS 7 and 5, Ardèche, France). The results of studies applied to pieces made of quatrz and quartzite at the site of Payre (isotopic stages 7 and 5) testify to the peculiar handling of these stones which were collected in the neighbourhood of the site and are little abundant in the assemblages found. The two rocks were worked outside the cave, according to techniques similar to those applied in the case of silex. These observations concern all the levels of the sequence. The techno-economic study of the artefacts indicates a handling of these materials that exceeds the strict frame of the site, such as rocks being often considered as a makeshift complement and little used in the sites of the Rhone middle valley.; Les résultats des études appliquées sur les pièces en quartz et quartzite du site de Payre (stades isotopiques 7 et 5) attestent que ces roches, pouvant être récoltées à proximité du site et peu abondantes dans les assemblages, ont connu un traitement particulier. Cesdeux roches ont été débitées à l'extérieur de la cavité, selon des méthodes proches de celles appliquées sur le silex. Ces observations concernent tous les niveaux de la séquence. L'étude techno-économique des pièces indique une gestion de ces matériaux qui dépasse le strict cadre du site, roches souvent considérées comme un complément de fortune et peu utilisées dans les sites de la moyenne vallée du Rhône.

Abstract

The senses involved in food detection in primates in general, and lemurs in particular, remain poorly investigated. However, as lemurs include diurnal, nocturnal, and cathemeral species they represent a good model to test whether prey detection is dependent on activity pattern. As both diurnal and nocturnal species have been investigated previously we here aim to quantify the relative importance of different sensory modalities during prey detection in a cathemeral species, the red-bellied lemur (Eulemeur rubriventer). A series of experiments was performed using a group of four Eulemur rubriventer (Zoo de La Londe les Maures, France) to test the role of visual, olfactory and acoustic cues in prey detection. Both unimodal and multimodal cues were tested. the responses obtained in the different experiments show that visual cues are essential for prey detection in this species, at least in captivity. However, the use of multiple sensory modalities improves the success of detection suggesting that cathemeral species may benefit from the use of multiple sensory modalities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Different primate species have developed extensive capacities for grasping and manipulating objects. However, the manual abilities of primates remain poorly known from a dynamic point of view. The aim of the present study was to quantify the functional and behavioral strategies used by captive bonobos (Pan paniscus) during tool use tasks. The study was conducted on eight captive bonobos which we observed during two tool use tasks: food extraction from a large piece of wood and food recovery from a maze. We focused on grasping postures, in-hand movements, the sequences of grasp postures used that have not been studied in bonobos, and the kind of tools selected. Bonobos used a great variety of grasping postures during both tool use tasks. They were capable of in-hand movement, demonstrated complex sequences of contacts, and showed more dynamic manipulation during the maze task than during the extraction task. They arrived on the location of the task with the tool already modified and used different kinds of tools according to the task. We also observed individual manual strategies. Bonobos were thus able to develop in-hand movements similar to humans and chimpanzees, demonstrated dynamic manipulation, and they responded to task constraints by selecting and modifying tools appropriately, usually before they started the tasks. These results show the necessity to quantify object manipulation in different species to better understand their real manual specificities, which is essential to reconstruct the evolution of primate manual abilities., (© 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)
