Abstract

Marine protected areas (MPAs), particularly large MPAs, are increasing in number and size around the globe in part to facilitate the conservation of marine megafauna under the assumption that large-scale MPAs better align with vagile life histories; however, this alignment is not well established. Using a global tracking dataset from 36 species across five taxa, chosen to reflect the span of home range size in highly mobile marine megafauna, we show most MPAs are too small to encompass complete home ranges of most species. Based on size alone, 40% of existing MPAs could encompass the home ranges of the smallest ranged species, while only < 1% of existing MPAs could encompass those of the largest ranged species. Further, where home ranges and MPAs overlapped in real geographic space, MPAs encompassed < 5% of core areas used by all species. Despite most home ranges of mobile marine megafauna being much larger than existing MPAs, we demonstrate how benefits from MPAs are still likely to accrue by targeting seasonal aggregations and critical life history stages and through other management techniques.

Abstract

The franciscana dolphin, Pontoporia blainvillei, is one of the most threatened cetaceans in the Southwestern Atlantic. Within their limited coastal range off Argentina, Uruguay, and Brazil, franciscanas face human activities, including artisanal gillnet fishing and coastal development. A lack of information on ranging patterns, population structure, and behavior for informing management led to efforts to develop and apply approaches to tag franciscanas in Argentina (Bahía Samborombón [BS], Bahía San Blas [BSB]) and Brazil (Baía Babitonga [BB]) during 2005–2013. Findings from VHF tags deployed in BS in 2005 during feasibility tests for catching and handling franciscanas for tagging suggested residency over periods of weeks. Subsequently, satellite‐linked tags confirmed patterns of residency at each site. Home range size varied, with ranges of 5–7 km2 for BB, 51–312 km2 for BS, and 49–1,014 km2 for BSB. Diving patterns varied across sites, with the animals using the entire water column, exposing them to fishing nets regardless of the depth at which the nets were set. Tracking durations and follow‐up observations indicated that this research approach is useful for studies of franciscanas. 10. Bennettella ceticola(Nelson ex Bennett) Holmes on the skin of Franciscana dolphin (Pontoporia blainvillei) of the Argentinean Sea: an emendation of the generic description

Abstract

The presence of epizoic diatoms on the skin of a variety of large marine vertebrates, such as whales and dolphins, has been often reported in the scientific literature. The first observations of an algal growth over on the skin of cetaceans were probably made around 1920. Later studies showed the presence of a new species, Cocconeis ceticola,on skin samples. Morphological features of this species led to the transference of C. ceticola,together with related forms, to the new genus BennettellaHolmes.Here, we report the occurrence of a diatom film of Bennettella ceticolaon the skin of the Franciscana dolphin (Pontoporia blainvillei), obtained from bycatch in fishermen’s gillnets at Samborombon Bay, Argentina, in April 2005. For comparison the holotype of B. ceticola,deposited in the Natural History Museum (London, U.K.) dated 1920 and labelled as Cocconeis ceticolawas examined. Detailed analysis of the fine structure of B. ceticolashows that it mostly matches the original description. However, the external raphe ending is not bifurcated (as originally described), and has only one simple, parallel sided slit and polar fissures hidden by a triangular flange. The triangular flange is the main diagnostic feature distinguishing Bennettellafrom EpipellisHolmes and CocconeisEhrenberg, allowing us to propose an emended description of Bennettella.The taxonomic affinities of B. ceticolawith related genera, such as Cocconeisand Epipellis, are discussed. The present study constitutes the first report of B. ceticolaas an epizoic diatom of a cetacean species in waters of the Argentinean Sea.

Abstract

The franciscana, Pontoporia blainvillei, is endemic to the western South Atlantic Ocean and is perhaps one of the most threatened small cetacean species in this region. This paper presents a first abundance estimate for the coastal waters of Rio Grande do Sul State (southern Brazil) and Uruguay. In March 1996, an aerial survey was conducted along the Rio Grande do Sul State coast. Thirty-four franciscanas (29 groups) were recorded leading to a mean density estimate of 0.657 individuals/km2 (95% CI: 0.516 to 0.836) for the study area (435km2) after applying a correction factor for submerged dolphins. This corresponds to an estimated abundance of 286 franciscanas (95% CI: 225 to 364). The study area represents only 0.7% of the suggested distribution of the stock. The paper discusses possible management implications of this study in the light of reported incidental mortality estimates for this region. Further surveys covering a larger area are recommended in order to obtain more reliable abundance estimates for the stock.

Abstract

Four distinct Franciscana Management Areas (FMAs) have been proposed based on several lines of evidence including genotype, phenotype, population response and distribution. To determine if differences in external morphology fit this division, a canonical variate analysis was carried out for males and/or females from FMAs I to IV using up to 14 characters. A total of 78 adult specimens were analysed. More than 90% of the differences between groups were summarized by three canonical variates. Females were larger than males in all areas. Females from FMA IV were of intermediate length between those from FMA I and FMA III and individuals from FMA II were smaller than those from all other areas. Position of dorsal fin and morphology of the anterior body region, differentiate individuals from FMA I and FMA III. Morphological differences found in this study give additional support for the proposed FMAs. Since habitat characteristics and franciscana feeding ecology vary regionally, it is possible that observed morphological differences are due to ecological divergence for niche occupation. The indication of a discontinuous distribution, consistency between genetic and morphological evidence, and a short time genetic divergence, might indicate that franciscanas inhabiting FMA I represent a distinct subspecies.
