Abstract

In survival analysis, the lifetime under study is not always observed. In certain applications, for some individuals, the value of the lifetime is only known to be smaller or larger than some random duration. This framework represent an extension of standard situations where the lifetime is only left or only right randomly censored. We consider the case where the independent observation units include also some covariates, and we propose two semiparametric regression models. The new models extend the standard Cox proportional hazard model to the situation of a more complex censoring mechanism. However, like in Cox's model, in both models the nonparametric baseline hazard function still could be expressed as an explicit functional of the distribution of the observations. This allows to define the estimator of the finite-dimensional parameters as the maximum of a likelihood-type criterion which is an explicit function of the data. Given an estimate of the finite-dimensional parameter, the estimation of the baseline cumulative hazard function is straightforward.

Abstract

Cure models have been widely developed to estimate the cure fraction when some subjects never experience the event of interest. However these models were rarely focused on the estimation of the time-to-cure i.e. the delay elapsed between the diagnosis and "the time from which cure is reached", an important indicator, for instance to address the question of access to insurance or loans for subjects with personal history of cancer. We propose a new excess hazard regression model that includes the time-to-cure as a covariate dependent parameter to be estimated. The model is written similarly to a Beta probability distribution function and is shown to be a particular case of the non-mixture cure models. Parameters are estimated through a maximum likelihood approach and simulation studies demonstrate good performance of the model. Illustrative applications to two cancer data sets are provided and some limitations as well as possible extensions of the model are discussed. The proposed model offers a simple and comprehensive way to estimate more accurately the time-to-cure. Key words: Cancer; Cure model; Cure time; Net survival; Right to be forgotten.

Abstract

We consider the gamma process perturbed by a Brownian motion (independent of the gamma process) as a degradation model. Parameters estimation is studied here. We assume that $n$ independent items are observed at irregular instants. From these observations, we estimate the parameters using the moments method. Then, we study the asymptotic properties of the estimators. Furthermore we derive some particular cases of items observed at regular or non-regular instants. Finally, some numerical simulations and two real data applications are provided to illustrate our method.

Abstract

Suppose that univariate data are drawn from a mixture of two distributions that are equal up to a shift parameter. Such a model is known to be nonidentifiable from a nonparametric viewpoint. However, if we assume that the unknown mixed distribution is symmetric, we obtain the identifiability of this model, which is then defined by four unknown parameters: the mixing proportion, two location parameters and the cumulative distribution function of the symmetric mixed distribution. We propose estimators for these four parameters when no training data is available. Our estimators are shown to be strongly consistent under mild regularity assumptions and their convergence rates are studied. Abstract

Posterior Reversible Encephalopathy Syndrome (PRES) is a characteristic clinical radiographic syndrome with diffuse structural alteration of cerebral white matter secondary to myelin damage with diverse and multifactorial etiologies. It can present with acutely altered mentation, somnolence or occasionally stupor, vision impairment, seizures, and sudden or chronic headaches that are not focal. The pathophysiology remains unclear, but mechanisms involving endothelial injury and dysregulation of cerebral autoregulation have been purported. We report the case of a 36-year-old male with a history of heroin use disorder, who was admitted to our hospital for opioid withdrawal. CT head without contrast and MRI with and without gadolinium showed significant white matter disease in both cerebral hemispheres and cerebellum. He was diagnosed with Posterior Reversible Encephalopathy Syndrome secondary to heroin use and managed on the medical floor in collaboration with the neurology team. His clinical symptoms improved and he was discharged after six weeks. To our knowledge, this case did not present with the risk factors for PRES reported in the literature. For patients with heroin use disorder who present with an altered mental status, PRES should be highly suspected. The diagnosis and management require collaboration between psychiatry and neurology.

24. Consistent semiparametric estimators for recurrent event times models with application to virtual age models

Abstract

Virtual age models are very useful to analyse recurrent events. Among the strengths of these models is their ability to account for treatment (or intervention) effects after an event occurrence. Despite their flexibility for modeling recurrent events, the number of applications is limited. This seems to be a result of the fact that in the semiparametric setting all the existing results assume the virtual age function that describes the treatment (or intervention) effects to be known. This shortcoming can be overcome by considering semiparametric virtual age models with parametrically specified virtual age functions. Yet, fitting such a model is a difficult task. Indeed, it has recently been shown that for these models the standard profile likelihood method fails to lead to consistent estimators. Here we show that consistent estimators can be constructed by smoothing the profile log-likelihood function appropriately. We show that our general result can be applied to most of the relevant virtual age models of the literature. Our approach shows that empirical process techniques may be a worthwhile alternative to martingale methods for studying asymptotic properties of these inference methods. A simulation study is provided to illustrate our consistency results together with an application to real data.

Abstract

In this paper we propose a general methodology for testing the null hypothesis that an excess hazard rate model, with or without covariates, belongs to a parametric family. Estimating the excess hazard rate function parametrically through the maximum likelihood method and non-parametrically (or semi-parametrically) we build a discrepancy process which is shown to be asymptotically Gaussian under the null hypothesis. Based on this result we are able to build some statistical tests in order to decide wether or not the null hypothesis is acceptable. We illustrate our results by the construction of chi-square tests which the behavior is studied through a Monte-Carlo study. Then the testing procedure is applied to a population based colon cancer data.

International audience; We consider a semi-parametric model for recurrent events. The model consists of an unknown hazard rate function, the infinite-dimensional parameter of the model, and a parametrically specified effective age function. We will present a condition on the family of effective age functions under which the profile likelihood function evaluated at the parameter vector θ, say, exceeds the profile likelihood function evaluated at the parameter vector $\tilde\theta$, say, with probability p. From this we derive a condition under which profile likelihood inference for the finite-dimensional parameter of the model leads to inconsistent estimates. Examples will be presented. In particular, we will provide an example where the profile likelihood function is monotone with probability one regardless of the true data generating process.

Abstract

International audience; Finite mixture of models based on the proportional hazards or the accelerated failure time assumption lead to a large variety of lifetime regression models. We present several iterative methods based on EM and Stochastic EM methodologies, that allow fitting parametric or semiparametric mixture of lifetime regression models for randomly right censored lifetime data including covariates. Their identifiability is briefly discussed and in the semiparametric case we show that simulating the missing data coming from the mixture allows to use the ordinary partial likelihood inference method in an EM algorithm's M-step. The effectiveness of the new proposed algorithms is illustrated through simulation studies.

Abstract

International audience; The aim of the present paper is the stochastic modeling and statistical inference of a component which deteriorates over time, for prediction purpose. The deterioration is due to defects which appear one by one and next independently propagate over time. The motivation comes from an application to passive components within electric power plants, where (measurable) aw indications rst initiate (one at a time) and next grow over time. The available data come from inspections at discrete times, where only the largest aw indication is measured together with the total number of indications on each component. Though detected, too small indications cannot be measured, leading to censored observations. Taking into account this partial information coming from the eld, a specic stochastic model is proposed, where the aw indications initiate according to a Poisson process and next propagate according to competing independent gamma processes. A parametric estimation procedure is developed, tested on simulated data and then applied to the industrial case. The tted model is next used to make some prediction over the future deterioration of each component and over its residual operating time until a specied critical degradation level is reached.

46. Extension of the Parametric Delta Method with an Application to an Inference Method for a Degradation Model

Abstract

The delta method is a powerful method to approximate the probability distribution of a function $$\phi$$ ϕ of an asymptotically normal statistical estimator $$T_n$$ Tn where nis the sample size. Generally the asymptotic normality of the estimator results from central limit theorems that requires to center $$T_n$$ Tn and the function $$\phi$$ ϕ does not depend on n. In this paper, we provide an extension of the classical delta method to the case where both the centering parameter and the function $$\phi$$ ϕ depend on the sample size. This method can be used in various statistical applications (repeated measurement, panel data, degradation data, etc.). Starting by pointing out the main classical parametric delta methods, we provide its extension. The extended delta method is illustrated by an application to degradation data where the unknown parameters are estimated using the method of moments.

Abstract

A new estimation method for the two-component mixture model introduced in \cite{Van12} is proposed. This model, which consists of a two-component mixture of linear regressions in which one component is entirely known while the proportion, the slope, the intercept and the error distribution of the other component are unknown, seems to be of interest for the analysis of large datasets produced from two-color ChIP-chip high-density microarrays. In spite of good performance for datasets of reasonable size, the method proposed in \cite{Van12} suffers from a serious drawback when the sample size becomes large, as it is based on the optimization of a contrast function whose pointwise computation requires $O(n^2)$ operations. The range of applicability of the method derived in this work is substantially larger as it is based on a method-of-moment estimator whose computation only requires $O(n)$ operations. From a theoretical perspective, the asymptotic normality of both the estimator of the Euclidean parameter vector and of the semiparametric estimator of the c.d.f.\ of the error is proved under weak conditions not involving the zero-symmetry assumption typically used this last decade. The finite-sample performance of the latter estimators is studied under various scenarios through Monte Carlo experiments. From a more practical perspective, the proposed method is applied to the tone data analyzed, among others, by \cite{HunYou12}, and to the ChIPmix data studied by \cite{MarMarBer08}. An extension of the considered model involving an unknown scale parameter for the first component is discussed in the final section.

Abstract

Mixture models in reliability bring a useful compromise between parametric and nonparametric models, when several failure modes are suspected. The classical methods for estimation in mixture models rarely handle the additional difficulty coming from the fact that lifetime data are often censored, in a deterministic or random way. We present in this paper several iterative methods based on EM and Stochastic EM methodology, that allow us to estimate parametric or semiparametric mixture models for randomly right censored lifetime data, provided they are identifiable. We consider different levels of completion for the (incomplete) observed data, and provide genuine or EM-like algorithms for several situations. In particular, we show that in censored semiparametric situations, a stochastic step is the only practical solution allowing computation of nonparametric estimates of the unknown survival function. The effectiveness of the new proposed algorithms are demonstrated in simulation studies and an actual dataset example.
