1. The influence of silicon on the formation and transformation of corrosion products

Abstract

Accurate model predictions of corrosion-driven damage in reinforced concrete structures necessitate a comprehensive understanding of the rate of corrosion product formation. Here, we investigate the influence of dissolved Si characteristic of cementitious systems on the rate of corrosion product transformation at alkaline pH. Compared to systems aged in the absence of Si, small amounts of Si retard the formation rate of the thermodynamically stable corrosion product goethite by a factor of 10. The estimated first order rate constant of transformation k decreases exponentially as a function of the dissolved Si concentration and follows the progression log10k = log10k_0 - 14.65[Si]^0.28. Findings further suggest that the observed retardation is primarily due to the formation of a mobile aqueous Fe-Si complex. The concentration of Si in cementitious systems has a crucial influence, and additional research is required to fully incorporate this factor into reactive transport models, ultimately essential for accurate service life predictions.

5. Spatio-Chemical Deconvolution of the LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2/Li6PS5Cl Interphase Layer in All-Solid-State Batteries Using Combined X-ray Spectroscopic Methods

Abstract

The (electro)chemical degradation at the interface between Li6PS5Cl (LPSC) and LiNi0.6Co0.2Mn0.2O2(NCM622) is systematically investigated using nondestructive synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray photoemission electron microscopy. These measurements were surface chemical depth profiling (from 2 to several hundred nanometers) and high-resolution elemental imaging of both LPSC and NCM622 particles. This analysis was complemented by galvanostatic cycling, impedance spectroscopy, and operando cell pressure characterization. Several correlations between interphase evolution and cell electrochemical performance are clarified, while some inconsistencies are rationalized and discussed. First, the intrinsic LPSC electrochemical oxidation mechanisms were studied using an LPSC:C65 working electrode (WE). The results showed that increased cell resistance during the first charge stemmed from polysulfide byproducts and particle contact loss due to LPSC volume shrinkage at the interface. Second, when using an NCM622:LPSC WE, species, such as SO32–, SO42–, and PO43–, were detected on both LPSC and NCM622 particles, while electrochemically inactive reduced transition metals were observed only at NCM622 surfaces. These species, initially present at open-circuit potential, increased after the first charge due to the chemical reactions between LPSC and NCM622 surface lattice oxygen. The estimated interphase thickness on the LPSC and NCM622 surfaces over the cycling remains below ∼3 nm. Our findings highlight that the formation of an electrochemically inactive NCM622 surface is a primary cause of impedance rise during the first charge, along with the formation of LPSC byproducts and contact loss. However, the continuous increase in cell resistance could not be attributed to further interphase growth after the first charge. We hypothesize that this may result from slow and progressive LPSC polymerization reactions (e.g., Li2P2S6and P2S5) and structural changes at the NCM622 surface.

Abstract

Transition metal reactivity toward carbon–hydrogen (C–H) bonds hinges on the interplay of electron donation and withdrawal at the metal center. Manipulating this reactivity in a controlled way is difficult because the hypothesized metal-alkane charge-transfer interactions are challenging to access experimentally. Using time-resolved x-ray spectroscopy, we track the charge-transfer interactions during C–H activation of octane by a cyclopentadienyl rhodium carbonyl complex. Changes in oxidation state as well as valence-orbital energies and character emerge in the data on a femtosecond to nanosecond timescale. The x-ray spectroscopic signatures reflect how alkane-to-metal donation determines metal-alkane complex stability and how metal-to-alkane back-donation facilitates C–H bond cleavage by oxidative addition. The ability to dissect charge-transfer interactions on an orbital level provides opportunities for manipulating C–H reactivity at transition metals.

Abstract

For the first time, μ-X-ray fluorescence (μ-XRF) mapping combined with fluorine K-edge μ-X-ray absorption near-edge structure (μ-XANES) spectroscopy was applied to depict per- and polyfluoroalkyl substance (PFAS) contamination and inorganic fluoride in sample concentrations down to 100 μg kg−1 fluoride. To demonstrate the matrix tolerance of the method, several PFAS contaminated soil and sludge samples as well as selected consumer product samples (textiles, food contact paper and permanent baking sheets) were investigated. μ-XRF mapping allows for a unique element-specific visualization at the sample surface and enables localization of fluorine containing compounds to a depth of 1 μm. Manually selected fluorine rich spots were subsequently analyzed via fluorine K-edge μ-XANES spectroscopy. To support spectral interpretation with respect to inorganic and organic chemical distribution and compound class determination, linear combination (LC) fitting was applied to all recorded μ-XANES spectra. Complementarily, solvent extracts of all samples were target-analyzed via LC-MS/MS spectrometry. The detected PFAS sum values range from 20 to 1136 μg kg−1 dry weight (dw). All environmentally exposed samples revealed a higher concentration of PFAS with a chain length > C8 (e.g. 580 μg kg−1 dw PFOS for Soil1), whereas the consumer product samples showed a more uniform distribution with regard to chain lengths from C4 to C8. Independent of quantified PFAS amounts via target analysis, μ-XRF mapping combined with μ-XANES spectroscopy was successfully applied to detect both point-specific concentration maxima and evenly distributed surface coatings of fluorinated organic contaminants in the corresponding samples. Application of wood ash to forests can restore pools of phosphorus (P) and other nutrients, which are removed following whole tree harvesting. Yet, the mechanisms that affect the fate of ash-P in the organic layer are less well known. Previous research into the extent to which ash application leads to increased P solubility in the soil is contradictory. We combined synchrotron P K-edge XANES spectroscopy, µ-XRF microscopy, and chemical extractions to examine the speciation and solubility of P. We studied organic horizons of two long-term field experiments, Riddarhyttan (central Sweden), which had received 3, 6, and 9 Mg ash ha−1, and Rödålund (northern Sweden), where 3 Mg ash ha−1 had been applied alone or combined with N every-three years since 2003. At the latter site, we also determined P in aboveground tree biomass. Overall, the ash application increased P in the organic layer by between 6 and 28 kg P ha−1, equivalent to 17–39 % of the initial P content in the applied ash. At Rödålund, there was 4.6 kg Ca-bound P ha−1 (9.5 %) in the ash treatment compared to 1.6 kg ha−1 in the ash + N treatment and < 0.4 kg ha−1 in the N treatment and the control. At Riddarhyttan, only the treatment with the highest ash dose had residual Ca-bound P (3.8 kg ha−1). In contrast, the ash application increased Al-bound P (p < 0.001) with up to 15.6 kg P ha−1. Moreover, the ash increased Olsen-P by up to two times. There was a strong relationship between the concentrations of Olsen-P and Al-bound P (R2 = 0.83, p < 0.001) as well as Fe-bound P (R2 = 0.74, p = 0.003), suggesting that the ash application resulted in an increased amount of relatively soluble P associated with hydroxy-Al and hydroxy-Fe compounds. Further, there was an 18 % increase in P uptake by trees in the ash treatment. By contrast, repeated N fertilization, with or without ash, reduced Olsen-P. Abstract

In viscous, organic-rich aerosol particles containing iron, sunlight may induce anoxic conditions that stabilize reactive oxygen species (ROS) and carbon-centered radicals (CCRs). In laboratory experiments, we show mass loss, iron oxidation and radical formation and release from photoactive organic particles containing iron. Our results reveal a range of temperature and relative humidity, including ambient conditions, that control ROS build up and CCR persistence in photochemically active, viscous organic particles. We find that radicals can attain high concentrations, altering aerosol chemistry and exacerbating health hazards of aerosol exposure. Our physicochemical kinetic model confirmed these results, implying that oxygen does not penetrate such particles due to the combined effects of fast reaction and slow diffusion near the particle surface, allowing photochemically-produced radicals to be effectively trapped in an anoxic organic matrix., Sunlight can change the composition of atmospheric aerosol particles, but the mechanisms through which this happens are not well known. Here, the authors show that fast radical reaction and slow diffusion near viscous organic particle surfaces can cause oxygen depletion, radical trapping and humidity dependent oxidation.

Abstract

Understanding the behavior of halogens (Cl, Br, and I) in subduction zones is critical to constrain the geochemical cycle of these volatiles and associated trace metals, as well as to quantify the halogen fluxes to the atmosphere via volcanic degassing. Here, the partitioning of bromine between coexisting aqueous fluids and hydrous granitic melts and its speciation in slab-derived fluids have been investigated in situ up to 840 ∘C and 2.2 GPa by synchrotron x-ray fluorescence (SXRF) and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) in diamond anvil cells. The partition coefficients range from ∼2 to ∼15, with an average value of 6.7±3.6 (1σ) over the whole pressure–temperature (P–T) range, indicating a moderate Br enrichment in aqueous fluids, in agreement with previous work. Extended x-ray-absorption fine-structure (EXAFS) analysis further evidences a gradual evolution of Br speciation from hydrated Br ions [Br(H2O)6]− in slab dehydration fluids to more complex structures involving both Na ions and water molecules, [BrNax(H2O)y], in hydrous silicate melts and supercritical fluids released at greater depth (> 200 km). In denser fluids (ρ > 1.5 g cm−3) containing 60 wt % dissolved alkali–silicates and in hydrous Na2Si2O5 melts (10 wt % H2O), Br is found to be in a “salt-like” structure involving the six nearest Na ions and several next-nearest O neighbors that are either from water molecules and/or the silicate network. Bromine (and likely chlorine and iodine) complexing with alkalis is thus an efficient mechanism for the mobilization and transport of halogens by hydrous silicate melts and silica-rich supercritical fluids. The study describes the synthesis, as well as the electronic structure of Bis(4-cyano-2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-3,5-heptanedionato)copper(II), a metal-organic copper spin-1/2 moleculewith a comparatively small magnetic moment. The results show that this molecule has a gap between the highest and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital, even after being well screened in its photoemission final state.
