Abstract

Spin-ice materials are magnetic substances in which the spin directions map onto hydrogen positions in water ice. Their low-temperature magnetic state has been predicted to be a phase that obeys a Gauss' law and supports magnetic monopole excitations: in short, a Coulomb phase. We used polarized neutron scattering to show that the spin-ice material [Ho.sub.2][Ti.sub.2][O.sub.7] exhibits an almost perfect Coulomb phase. Our result proves the existence of such phases in magnetic materials and strongly supports the magnetic monopole theory of spin ice. 10.1126/science.1177582

Abstract

The photopyroelectric technique is used for measuring the thermal diffusivity in the vicinity of the magnetic transition of a set of La(sub 1-x)Sr(sub x)MnO3 (0< or equal to x< or equal to 0.3) single crystals. A drastic change in the critical exponent is observed for Sr concentration higher than 0.20 with a ferromagnetic low temperature phase approaching Ising behavior (alpha=+0.11) at the highest concentration.

Abstract

Using polarized neutron scattering we establish that the magnetic order in La1.48Nd0.4Sr0.12CuO4 is either (i) one dimensionally modulated and collinear, consistent with the stripe model or (ii) two dimensionally modulated with a novel noncollinear structure. The measurements rule out a number of alternative models characterized by 2D electronic order or 1D helical spin order. The low-energy spin excitations are found to be primarily transversely polarized relative to the stripe ordered state, consistent with conventional spin waves.

Abstract

We report measurements of the phonon dispersion relations in nonsuperconducting, oxygen-deficient PrBa2Cu3O6+x (xapproximate to0.2) by inelastic neutron scattering. The data are compared with a model of the lattice dynamics based on a common interatomic potential. Good agreement is achieved for all but two phonon branches, which are significantly softer than predicted. These modes are found to arise predominantly from motion of the oxygen ions in the CuO2 planes. Analogous modes in YBa2Cu3O6 are well described by the common interatomic potential model.
