We present the first systematic study of the stability of the structure and electrical properties of FeCl$_3$ intercalated few-layer graphene to high levels of humidity and high temperature. Complementary experimental techniques such as electrical transport, high resolution transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy conclusively demonstrate the unforeseen stability of this transparent conductor to a relative humidity up to $100 \%$ at room temperature for 25 days, to a temperature up to $150\,^\circ$C in atmosphere and up to a temperature as high as $620\,^\circ$C in vacuum, that is more than twice higher than the temperature at which the intercalation is conducted. The stability of FeCl$_3$ intercalated few-layer graphene together with its unique values of low square resistance and high optical transparency, makes this material an attractive transparent conductor in future flexible electronic applications., Comment: Scientific Reports, volume 5, article no. 7609

We present a Monte Carlo algorithm that allows the simultaneous determination of a few extremal eigenpairs of a very large matrix without the need to compute the inner product of two vectors or store all the components of any one vector. The new algorithm, a Monte Carlo implementation of a deterministic one we recently benchmarked, is an extension of the power method. In the implementation presented, we used a basic Monte Carlo splitting and termination method called the comb, incorporated the weight cancellation method of Arnow {\it et al.}, and exploited a new sampling method, the sewing method, that does a large state space sampling as a succession of small state space samplings. We illustrate the effectiveness of the algorithm by its determination of the two largest eigenvalues of the transfer matrices for variously-sized two-dimensional, zero field Ising models. While very likely useful for other transfer matrix problems, the algorithm is however quite general and should find application to a larger variety of problems requiring a few dominant eigenvalues of a matrix., Comment: 22 pages, no figures

We report the production and benchmarking of several refinements of the power method that enable the computation of multiple extremal eigenpairs of very large matrices. In these refinements we used an observation by Booth that has made possible the calculation of up to the 10$^{th}$ eigenpair for simple test problems simulating the transport of neutrons in the steady state of a nuclear reactor. Here, we summarize our techniques and efforts to-date on determining mainly just the two largest or two smallest eigenpairs. To illustrate the effectiveness of the techniques, we determined the two extremal eigenpairs of a cyclic matrix, the transfer matrix of the two-dimensional Ising model, and the Hamiltonian matrix of the one-dimensional Hubbard model., Comment: 29 papes, no figures

The properties of suspended graphene are currently attracting enormous interest, but the small size of available samples and the difficulties in making them severely restrict the number of experimental techniques that can be used to study the optical, mechanical, electronic, thermal and other characteristics of this one-atom-thick material. Here we describe a new and highly-reliable approach for making graphene membranes of a macroscopic size (currently up to 100 microns in diameter) and their characterization by transmission electron microscopy. In particular, we have found that long graphene beams supported by one side only do not scroll or fold, in striking contrast to the current perception of graphene as a supple thin fabric, but demonstrate sufficient stiffness to support extremely large loads, millions of times exceeding their own weight, in agreement with the presented theory. We show that the optical transparency of suspended graphene is defined by the fine structure constant, alpha, the parameter that describes coupling between light and relativistic electrons and is traditionally associated with quantum electrodynamics rather than condensed matter physics. Despite being only one atom thick, graphene is found to absorb a significant (pi times alpha=2.3%) fraction of incident white light, which is a consequence of graphene's unique electronic structure. This value translates into universal dynamic conductivity G =e^2/4h_bar within a few percent accuracy.

Graphene is only one atom thick, optically transparent, chemically inert and an excellent conductor. These properties seem to make this material an excellent candidate for applications in various photonic devices that require conducting but transparent thin films. In this letter we demonstrate liquid crystal devices with electrodes made of graphene which show excellent performance with a high contrast ratio. We also discuss the advantages of graphene compared to conventionally-used metal oxides in terms of low resistivity, high transparency and chemical stability.

Microfabrication of graphene devices used in many experimental studies currently relies on the fact that graphene crystallites can be visualized using optical microscopy if prepared on top of silicon wafers with a certain thickness of silicon dioxide. We study graphene's visibility and show that it depends strongly on both thickness of silicon dioxide and light wavelength. We have found that by using monochromatic illumination, graphene can be isolated for any silicon dioxide thickness, albeit 300 nm (the current standard) and, especially, approx. 100 nm are most suitable for its visual detection. The recent discovery of graphene has sparked significant interest, which has so far been focused on the peculiar electronic structure of this material, in which charge carriers mimic massless relativistic particle. However, the structure of graphene - a single layer of carbon atoms densely packed in a honeycomb crystal lattice - is also puzzling. On the one hand, graphene appears to be a strictly two-dimensional (2D) material and exhibits such a high crystal quality that electrons can travel submicron distances without scattering. On the other hand, perfect 2D crystals cannot exist in the free state, according to both theory and experiment. This is often reconciled by the fact that all graphene structures studied so far were an integral part of larger 3D structures, either supported by a bulk substrate or embedded in a 3D matrix. Here we report individual graphene sheets freely suspended on a microfabricated scaffold in vacuum or air. These membranes are only one atom thick and still display a long-range crystalline order. However, our studies by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) have revealed that suspended graphene sheets are not perfectly flat but exhibit intrinsic microscopic roughening such that the surface normal varies by several degrees and out-of-plane deformations reach 1 nm. The atomically-thin single-crystal membranes offer an ample scope for fundamental research and new technologies whereas the observed corrugations in the third dimension may shed light on subtle reasons behind the stability of 2D crystals., Comment: 14 pages, includes supplementary information

We report free-standing atomic crystals that are strictly 2D and can be viewed as individual atomic planes pulled out of bulk crystals or as unrolled single-wall nanotubes. By using micromechanical cleavage, we have prepared and studied a variety of 2D crystals, including single layers of boron nitride, graphite, several dichalcogenides and complex oxides. These atomically-thin sheets (essentially gigantic 2D molecules unprotected from the immediate environment) are stable under ambient conditions, exhibit high crystal quality and are continuous on a macroscopic scale., Comment: 4 pages
