We present a determination of the parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton from HERA data using a PDF parametrization inspired by a quantum statistical model of the proton dynamics. This parametrization is characterised by a very small number of parameters, yet it leads to a reasonably good description of the data, comparable with other parametrizations on the market. It may thus provide an alternative to standard parametrizations, useful for studying parametrization bias and to possibly simplify the fit procedure thanks to the small number of parameters. Interestingly, the model reproduces key physical features, such as a $\bar d$ distribution larger than $\bar u$, that HERA data alone are not able to constrain when using more flexible parametrizations. Moreover, polarized distributions are described in the model by the same parameters of the unpolarized ones, giving us the possibility of extracting both types of distributions within the same fit., Comment: 35 pages, 15 figures. We consider threshold resummation of rapidity distributions, for which various approaches exist in the literature. Recently, a work by Lustermans, Michel, Tackmann suggested that older approaches by Becher, Neubert, Xu (BNX) and Bonvini, Forte, Ridolfi (BFR) were wrong because they miss some leading-power contributions at threshold. In this work, we prove and demonstrate that the BNX and BFR approaches are correct and able to resum threshold logarithms to leading-power accuracy. We then show that the BNX and BFR approaches can provide rather good alternatives to more modern approaches to threshold resummation of rapidity distributions, provided the threshold logarithms are resummed according to the $\psi$-soft definition introduced in the context of Higgs production., Comment: 41 pages, 10 figures. We consider the production of a heavy quark pair in proton-proton collisions. For bottom and charm quarks, the final state invariant mass is typically much smaller than the collider energy (e.g. at the LHC), so that high-energy logarithms may spoil the perturbativity of the theoretical prediction at fixed order. The resummation of these logarithms to all orders is thus needed to obtain reliable predictions. In this work, we extend previous results on high-energy (or small-$x$) resummation to differential distributions in rapidity, transverse momentum and invariant mass, and implement them in the public code HELL., Comment: 44 pages, 5 figures. High energy collisions at the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (LHC) produce a large number of particles along the beam collision axis, outside of the acceptance of existing LHC experiments. The proposed Forward Physics Facility (FPF), to be located several hundred meters from the ATLAS interaction point and shielded by concrete and rock, will host a suite of experiments to probe Standard Model (SM) processes and search for physics beyond the Standard Model (BSM). In this report, we review the status of the civil engineering plans and the experiments to explore the diverse physics signals that can be uniquely probed in the forward region. FPF experiments will be sensitive to a broad range of BSM physics through searches for new particle scattering or decay signatures and deviations from SM expectations in high statistics analyses with TeV neutrinos in this low-background environment. High statistics neutrino detection will also provide valuable data for fundamental topics in perturbative and non-perturbative QCD and in weak interactions. Experiments at the FPF will enable synergies between forward particle production at the LHC and astroparticle physics to be exploited. We consider the problem of quantifying the uncertainty on theoretical predictions based on perturbation theory due to missing higher orders. The most widely used approach, scale variation, is largely arbitrary and it has no probabilistic foundation, making it not suitable for robust data analysis. In 2011, Cacciari and Houdeau proposed a model based on a Bayesian approach to provide a probabilistic definition of the theory uncertainty from missing higher orders. In this work, we propose an improved version of the Cacciari-Houdeau model, that overcomes some limitations. In particular, it performs much better in case of perturbative expansions with large high-order contributions (as it often happens in QCD). In addition, we propose an alternative model based on the same idea of scale variation, which overcomes some of the shortcomings of the canonical approach, on top of providing a probabilistically-sound result. Moreover, we address the problem of the dependence of theoretical predictions on unphysical scales (such as the renormalization scale), and propose a solution to obtain a scale-independent result within the probabilistic framework. We validate these methods on expansions with known sums, and apply them to a number of physical observables in particle physics. We also investigate some variations, improvements and combinations of the models. We believe that these methods provide a powerful tool to reliably estimate theory uncertainty from missing higher orders that can be used in any physics analysis. A new parametrization for the parton distribution functions with a higher flexibility in the small-$x$ region is presented. It has been implemented in the xFitter open-source PDF fitting tool, and compared to the default xFitter parametrization, used for the determination of the HERAPDF set. It has been found that the combined inclusive HERA I+II data can be described using NNLO theory with a significantly higher quality than HERAPDF2.0: the $\chi^2$ is reduced by more than 60 units, having used only four more parameters. Our result highlights a significant parametrization bias in the default xFitter parametrization at small $x$, which would lead to even more dramatic effects when used for higher energy colliders, where the small-$x$ region is more relevant. We also find that the inclusion of small-$x$ resummation leads to a further reduction by approximately 30 extra units in $\chi^2$. Small-$x$ resummation has been proven recently to be a crucial ingredient for describing small-$x$ HERA data, and the inclusion of small-$x$ resummation in parton distribution function (PDF) determination has a sizeable effect on the PDFs even at the electroweak scale. In this work we explore the implications of small-$x$ resummation at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and at a Future Circular Collider (FCC). We construct the theoretical machinery for resumming physical inclusive observables at hadron colliders, and describe its implementation in the public code HELL 3.0. We focus on Higgs production in gluon fusion as a prototypical example, both because it is sensitive to small-$x$ gluons and because of its importance for the LHC physics programme. We find that adding small-$x$ resummation to the N$^3$LO Higgs production cross section can lead to an increase of up to 10% at FCC, while the effect is smaller (+1%) at LHC but still important to achieve a high level of precision., Comment: 42 pages, 8 figures. We consider the expansion of small-$x$ resummed DGLAP splitting functions at next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) accuracy to four-loop order, namely next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^3$LO). From this, we extract the exact LL and NLL small-$x$ contributions to the yet unknown N$^3$LO splitting functions, both in the standard $\overline{MS}$ scheme and in the $Q_0 \overline{MS}$ scheme usually considered in small-$x$ literature. We show that the impact of unknown subleading logarithmic contributions (NNLL and beyond) at N$^3$LO is significant, thus motivating future work towards their computation. Our results will be also needed in future to match NLL resummation to N$^3$LO evolution. In turn, we propose an improved implementation of the small-$x$ resummation and therefore release a new version of the resummation code (HELL 3.0) which contains these changes., Comment: 34 pages, 5 figures, 2 appendices. We present the first double-resummed prediction of the inclusive cross section for the main Higgs production channel in proton-proton collisions, namely gluon fusion. Our calculation incorporates to all orders in perturbation theory two distinct towers of logarithmic corrections which are enhanced, respectively, at threshold, i.e. large x, and in the high-energy limit, i.e. small x. Large-x logarithms are resummed to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy, while small-x ones to leading logarithmic accuracy. The double-resummed cross section is furthermore matched to the state-of-the-art fixed-order prediction at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading accuracy. We find that double resummation corrects the Higgs production rate by 2% at the currently explored center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV and its impact reaches 10% at future circular colliders at 100 TeV., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures, 1 table. Fits to the final combined HERA deep-inelastic scattering cross-section data within the conventional DGLAP framework of QCD have shown some tension at low $x$ and low $Q^2$. A resolution of this tension incorporating $\ln(1/x)$-resummation terms into the HERAPDF fits is investigated using the xFitter program. The kinematic region where this resummation is important is delineated. Such high-energy resummation not only gives a better description of the data, particularly of the longitudinal structure function $F_L$, it also results in a gluon PDF which is steeply rising at low $x$ for low scales, $Q^2 \simeq 2.5$ GeV$^2$, contrary to the fixed-order NLO and NNLO gluon PDF., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures. We present a determination of the parton distribution functions of the proton in which NLO and NNLO fixed-order calculations are supplemented by NLLx small-x resummation. Deep inelastic structure functions are computed consistently at NLO+NLLx or NNLO+NLLx, while for hadronic processes small-x resummation is included only in the PDF evolution, with kinematic cuts introduced to ensure the fitted data lie in a region where the fixed-order calculation of the hard cross-sections is reliable. In all other respects, the fits use the same methodology and are based on the same global dataset as the recent NNPDF3.1 analysis. We demonstrate that the inclusion of small-x resummation leads to a quantitative improvement in the perturbative description of the HERA inclusive and charm-production reduced cross-sections in the small x region. The impact of the resummation in our fits is greater at NNLO than at NLO, because fixed-order calculations have a perturbative instability at small x due to large logarithms that can be cured by resummation. We explore the phenomenological implications of PDF sets with small-x resummation for the longitudinal structure function $F_L$ at HERA, for parton luminosities and LHC benchmark cross-sections, for ultra-high energy neutrino-nucleus cross-sections, and for future high-energy lepton-proton colliders such as the LHeC., Comment: 70 pages, many figures. In global fits of parton distribution functions (PDFs) a large fraction of data points, mostly from the HERA collider, lies in a region of $x$ and $Q^2$ that is sensitive to small-$x$ logarithmic enhancements. Thus, the proper theoretical description of these data requires the inclusion of small-$x$ resummation. In this work we provide all the necessary ingredients to perform a PDF fit to deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) data which includes small-$x$ resummation in the evolution of PDFs and in the computation of DIS structure functions. To this purpose, not only we include the resummation of DIS massless structure functions, but we also consider the production of a massive final state (e.g. a charm quark), and the consistent resummation of mass collinear logarithms through the implementation of a variable flavour number scheme at small $x$. As a result, we perform the small-$x$ resummation of the matching conditions in PDF evolution at heavy flavour thresholds. The resummed results are accurate at next-to-leading logarithmic (NLL) accuracy and matched, for the first time, to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO). Furthermore, we improve on our previous work by considering a novel all-order treatment of running coupling contributions. These results, which are implemented in a new release of HELL, version 2.0, will allow to fit PDFs from DIS data at the highest possible theoretical accuracy, NNLO+NLL, thus providing an important step forward towards precision determination of PDFs and consequently precision phenomenology at the LHC and beyond., Comment: 65 pages, 7 figures. We present preliminary results for fits of parton distribution functions (PDFs) which include the resummation of small-$x$ logarithms at NLLx accuracy, performed in the NNPDF framework. We observe an improvement in the description of DIS data at small values of Bjorken $x$ when resummation effects are included. The improvement is more marked when comparing NNLO+NLLx fits to NNLO ones, and is particularly noticeable for small-$x$ and small-$Q^2$ HERA inclusive structure functions. Small-$x$ logarithmic enhancements arising from high-energy gluon emissions affect both the evolution of collinearly-factorized parton densities and partonic coefficient functions. With the higher collider energy reached by the LHC, the prospect of a future high-energy collider, and the recent deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) results at small-$x$ from HERA, providing phenomenological tools for performing small-$x$ resummation has become of great relevance. In this paper we discuss a framework to perform small-$x$ resummation for both parton evolution and partonic coefficient functions and we describe its implementation in a computer code named High-Energy Large Logarithms (HELL). We consider the production of a pseudo-scalar particle $A$ at the LHC, and present accurate theoretical predictions for its inclusive cross section in gluon fusion. The prediction is based on combining fixed-order perturbation theory and all-order threshold resummation. At fixed order we include the exact next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) plus an approximate next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^3$LO$_{\rm A}$) which is based on the recent computation at this order for the scalar case. We then add threshold resummation at next-to-next-to-next-to leading logarithmic accuracy (N$^3$LL$^\prime$). Various forms of threshold resummation are considered, differing by the treatment of subleading terms, allowing a robust estimate of the theoretical uncertainties due to missing higher orders. With particular attention to pseudo-scalar masses of $200$ GeV and $750$ GeV, we also observe that perturbative convergence is much improved when resummation is included. Additionally, results obtained with threshold resummation in direct QCD are compared with analogous results as computed in soft-collinear effective theory, which turn out to be in good agreement. We provide precise predictions for pseudo-scalar inclusive cross section at $13$ TeV LHC for a wide range of masses. We present an unbiased determination of the charm content of the proton, in which the charm parton distribution function (PDF) is parametrized on the same footing as the light quarks and the gluon in a global PDF analysis. This determination relies on the calculation of deep-inelastic structure functions in the FONLL scheme, generalized to account for massive charm-initiated contributions. In contrast to the usual situation in which the charm PDF is assumed to be generated perturbatively by pair radiation off gluons and light quarks, vanishing at a scale set by the value of the charm mass m_c, we find that the fitted charm PDF vanishes within uncertainties at a scale Q~1.5 GeV for all x<~0.1, independent of the value of m_c used in the coefficient functions. We also find some evidence that the charm PDF at large x>~0.1 and low scales does not vanish, but rather has an "intrinsic" component, very weakly scale dependent and almost independent of the value of m_c, carrying about 1% of the total momentum of the proton. The uncertainties in all other PDFs are only slightly increased by the inclusion of fitted charm, while the dependence of these PDFs on m_c is significantly reduced. When the EMC charm structure function dataset is included, it is well described by the fit, and PDF uncertainties in the fitted charm PDF are significantly reduced, though we verify that excluding the EMC data does not qualitatively modify any of our findings. The increased stability with respect to m_c persists at high scales and is the main implication of our results for LHC phenomenology. Fitting the charm PDF modifies the predictions for processes such as high p_T and large rapidity charm pair production and Z+c production, and thus we expect that future LHC data will further constrain the charm content of the proton., Comment: 46 pages, 32 figures. We present up-to-date matched predictions for the $b\bar{b}H$ inclusive cross section at the LHC at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV. Using a previously developed method, our predictions consistently combine the complete NLO contributions that are present in the 4-flavor scheme calculation, including finite b-quark mass effects as well as top-loop induced $Y_b Y_t$ interference contributions, with the resummation of collinear logarithms of $m_b/m_H$ as present in the 5-flavor scheme calculation up to NNLO. We provide a detailed estimate of the perturbative uncertainties of the matched result by examining its dependence on the factorization and renormalization scales, the scale of the Yukawa coupling, and also the low b-quark matching scale in the PDFs. We motivate the use of a central renormalization scale of $m_H$/2, which is halfway between the values typically chosen in the 4-flavor and 5-flavor scheme calculations. We evaluate the parametric uncertainties due to the PDFs and the b-quark mass, and in particular discuss how to systematically disentangle the parametric $m_b$ dependence and the unphysical b-quark matching scale dependence. Our best prediction for the $b\bar{b} H$ production cross section in the Standard Model at 13 TeV and for $m_H$ = 125 GeV is $\sigma(b\bar b H) = 0.52 \,{\rm pb}\, [1 \pm 9.6\% {\rm (perturbative)}\,{}^{+2.9\%}_{-3.6\%} {\rm (parametric)}]$. We also provide predictions for a range of Higgs masses $m_H\in [50, 750]$ GeV. We consider the inclusive production of a Higgs boson in gluon-fusion and we study the impact of threshold resummation at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy (N$^3$LL) on the recently computed fixed-order prediction at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^3$LO). We propose a conservative, yet robust way of estimating the perturbative uncertainty from missing higher (fixed- or logarithmic-) orders. We compare our results with two other different methods of estimating the uncertainty from missing higher orders: the Cacciari-Houdeau Bayesian approach to theory errors, and the use of algorithms to accelerate the convergence of the perturbative series. We confirm that the best convergence happens at $\mu_R=\mu_F=m_H\,/\,2$, and we conclude that a reliable estimate of the uncertainty from missing higher orders on the Higgs cross section at 13 TeV is approximately $\pm4$%., Comment: 27 pages, 6 figures. We show how to extend systematically the FONLL scheme for inclusion of heavy quark mass effects in DIS to account for the possible effects of an intrinsic charm component in the nucleon. We show that when there is no intrinsic charm, FONLL is equivalent to S-ACOT to any order in perturbation theory, while when an intrinsic charm component is included FONLL is identical to ACOT, again to all orders in perturbation theory. We discuss in detail the inclusion of top and bottom quarks to construct a variable flavour number scheme, and give explicit expressions for the construction of the structure functions $F^c_2$, $F^c_L$ and $F^c_3$ to NNLO., Comment: 43 pages, 1 figure. The FONLL general-mass variable-flavour number scheme provides a framework for the matching of a calculation in which a heavy quark is treated as a massless parton to one in which the mass dependence is retained throughout. We describe how the usual formulation of FONLL can be extended in such a way that the heavy quark parton distribution functions are freely parameterized at some initial scale, rather than being generated entirely perturbatively. We specifically consider the case of deep-inelastic scattering, in view of applications to PDF determination, and the possible impact of a fitted charm quark distribution on $F_2^c$ is assessed., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures. We use a systematic effective field theory setup to derive the $b\bar{b}H$ production cross section. Our result combines the merits of both fixed 4-flavor and 5-flavor schemes. It contains the full 4-flavor result, including the exact dependence on the $b$-quark mass, and improves it with a resummation of collinear logarithms of $m_b/m_H$. In the massless limit, it corresponds to a reorganized 5-flavor result. While we focus on $b\bar{b}H$ production, our method applies to generic heavy-quark initiated processes at hadron colliders. Our setup resembles the variable flavor number schemes known from heavy-flavor production in deep-inelastic scattering, but also differs in some key aspects. Most importantly, the effective $b$-quark PDF appears as part of the perturbative expansion of the final result where it effectively counts as an $O(\alpha_s)$ object. The transition between the fixed-order (4-flavor) and resummation (5-flavor) regimes is governed by the low matching scale at which the $b$-quark is integrated out. Varying this scale provides a systematic way to assess the perturbative uncertainties associated with the resummation and matching procedure and reduces by going to higher orders. We discuss the practical implementation and present numerical results for the $b\bar{b}H$ production cross section at NLO+NLL. We also provide a comparison to the corresponding predictions in the fixed 4-flavor and 5-flavor results and the Santander matching prescription. Compared to the latter, we find a slightly reduced uncertainty and a larger central value, with its central value lying at the lower edge of our uncertainty band., Comment: 54 pages, 16 figures. We construct a set of parton distribution functions (PDFs) in which fixed-order NLO and NNLO calculations are supplemented with soft-gluon (threshold) resummation up to NLL and NNLL accuracy respectively, suitable for use in conjunction with any QCD calculation in which threshold resummation is included at the level of partonic cross sections. These resummed PDF sets, based on the NNPDF3.0 analysis, are extracted from deep-inelastic scattering, Drell-Yan, and top quark pair production data, for which resummed calculations can be consistently used. We find that, close to threshold, the inclusion of resummed PDFs can partially compensate the enhancement in resummed matrix elements, leading to resummed hadronic cross-sections closer to the fixed-order calculation. On the other hand, far from threshold, resummed PDFs reduce to their fixed-order counterparts. We construct an approximate expression for the total cross section for the production of a heavy quark-antiquark pair in hadronic collisions at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^3$LO) in $\alpha_s$. We use a technique which exploits the analyticity of the Mellin space cross section, and the information on its singularity structure coming from large N (soft gluon, Sudakov) and small N (high energy, BFKL) all order resummations, previously introduced and used in the case of Higgs production. We validate our method by comparing to available exact results up to NNLO. Co-simulation platforms are necessary to study the interactions of complex systems integrated in future smart grids. The Virtual Grid Integration Laboratory (VirGIL) is a modular co-simulation platform designed to study interactions between demand response strategies, building comfort, communication networks, and power system operation. This paper presents the coupling of power systems, buildings, communications and control under a master algorithm. There are two objectives. First, to use a modular architecture for VirGIL, based on the Functional Mock-up Interface (FMI), where several different modules can be added, exchanged, and tested. Second, to use a commercial power system simulation platform, familiar to power system operators, such as DIgSILENT Powerfactory. This will help reduce the barriers to the industry for adopting such platforms, investigate and subsequently deploy demand response strategies in their daily operation. VirGIL further introduces the integration of the Quantized State System (QSS) methods for simulation in this co-simulation platform. Results on how these systems interact using a real network and consumption data are also presented.

We derive the three loop soft function for inclusive Higgs production in gluon fusion, and use it to perform the resummation of the Higgs cross section at N$^3$LL$^\prime$ in SCET. We improve the accuracy of the resummation by including contributions of collinear origin. We include finite top, bottom and charm mass effect where available. We perform a comparison of soft-gluon resummation in SCET vs. direct QCD (dQCD), using Higgs boson production in gluon fusion as a case study, with the goal of tracing the quantitative impact of each source of difference between the two approaches. We show that saddle-point methods enable a direct quantitative comparison despite the fact that the scale which is resummed in the two approaches is not the same. As a byproduct, we put in one-to-one analytic correspondence various features of either approach: specifically, we show how the SCET method for treating the Landau pole can be implemented in dQCD, and how the resummation of the optimal partonic scale of dQCD can be implemented in SCET. We conclude that the main quantitative difference comes from power-suppressed subleading contributions, which could in fact be freely tuned in either approach, and not really characteristic of either. This conclusion holds for Higgs production in gluon fusion, but it is in fact generic for processes with similar kinematics. For Higgs production, everything else being equal, SCET resummation at NNLL in the Becher-Neubert implementation leads to essentially no enhancement of the NNLO cross-section, unlike dQCD in the standard implementation of Catani et al.., Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures; final version, to be published in JHEP. We present accurate predictions for the inclusive production of a Higgs boson in proton-proton collisions, via gluon-gluon fusion. Our calculation includes next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) corrections in perturbative QCD, as well as the resummation of threshold-enhanced contributions to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (N$^3$LL) accuracy, with the inclusion of the recently-determined three-loop constant coefficient (sometimes referred to as N$^3$LL' accuracy). Our result correctly accounts for finite top, bottom and charm masses at leading order (LO) and next-to-leading order (NLO), and includes top mass dependence at NNLO. At the resummed level the dependence on top, bottom and charm mass is accounted for at NLL, while only the top mass at NNLL. The all-order calculation is improved by a suitable choice of the soft terms, dictated by analyticity conditions and by the inclusion of subleading corrections of collinear origin, which improve the accuracy of the resummation away from the threshold region. We present results for different collider energies and we study perturbative uncertainties by varying renormalization and factorization scales. We find that, at current LHC energies, the resummation corrects the NNLO result by as much as 20 % at $\mu_R=\mu_F=m_H$, while the correction is much smaller, 5.5 %, at $\mu_R=\mu_F=m_H /\,2$. While the central value of NNLO+N$^3$LL result depends very mildly on the scale choice, we argue that a more reliable estimate of the theoretical uncertainty is found if the perturbative scales are canonically varied about $m_H$., Comment: 21 pages, 8 figures. We update our estimate of the cross section for Higgs production in gluon fusion at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^3$LO) in $\alpha_s$ in view of the recent full computation of the result in the soft limit for infinite top mass, which determines a previously unknown constant. An approximate expression for the inclusive Higgs production cross section in gluon fusion at NNNLO in QCD with finite top mass is presented. We argue that an accurate approximation can be constructed combining (and improving) the large- and small-z behaviours of the partonic cross section, which are both known to all orders from soft-gluon (Sudakov) and high-energy (BFKL) resummations, respectively. For a 125 GeV Higgs at LHC at 8 TeV, we find an increase of about 6-13% with respect to the NNLO inclusive cross section for the conventional scale \mu_R=m_H/2, suggesting that higher order QCD corrections might be underestimated by presently available results. We study the effect of QCD corrections to the $gg\to H\to W^+ W^-$ signal-background interference at the LHC for a heavy Higgs boson. We construct a soft-collinear approximation to the NLO and NNLO corrections for the background process, which is exactly known only at LO. We estimate its accuracy by constructing and comparing the same approximation to the exact result for the signal process, which is known up to NNLO, and we conclude that we can describe the signal-background interference to better than ten percent accuracy. We show that our result implies that, in practice, a fairly good approximation to higher-order QCD corrections to the interference may also be obtained by rescaling the known LO result by a K-factor computed using the signal process., Comment: 6 pages, 3 tables, 2 figures; v2: version published in PRD

We construct an approximate expression for the cross section for Higgs production in gluon fusion at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^3$LO) in $\alpha_s$ with finite top mass. We argue that an accurate approximation can be constructed by exploiting the analiticity of the Mellin space cross section, and the information on its singularity structure coming from large N (soft gluon, Sudakov) and small N (high energy, BFKL) all order resummations. We support our argument with an explicit comparison of the approximate and the exact expressions up to the highest (NNLO) order at which the latter are available. We find that the approximate N$^3$LO result amounts to a correction of 16% to the NNLO QCD cross section for production of a 125 GeV Higgs at the LHC (8 TeV), larger than previously estimated, and it significantly reduces the scale dependence of the NNLO result., Comment: Results also provided at muf=mh/2 (Tab.1, Eq.4); scale dependence (Fig. 8) in extended range; comparison to previous collinear improvement added (Figs 1, 2, 8); comparison to resummed results added (Sec.4). We summarize and extend previous results on the comparison of threshold resummation, performed, using soft-collinear effective theory (SCET), in the Becher-Neubert approach, to the standard perturbative QCD formalism based on factorization and resummation of Mellin moments of partonic cross sections. We show that the logarithmic accuracy of this SCET result can be extended by half a logarithmic order, thereby bringing it in full agreement with the standard QCD result if a suitable choice is made for the soft scale mu_s which characterizes the SCET result. We provide a master formula relating the two approaches for other scale choices. We then show that with the Becher-Neubert scale choice the Landau pole, which in the perturbative QCD approach is usually removed through power- or exponentially suppressed terms, in the SCET approach is removed by logarithmically subleading terms which break factorization. This thesis arises in the context of precision measurements at hadron colliders. The Tevatron and the LHC provide very accurate measurements of many Standard Model processes, such as the production of a lepton pair (Drell-Yan) of high invariant mass. An accurate theoretical prediction of such processes is crucial to be able to distinguish Standard Model physics from possible new physics signals. QCD effects in the computation of the cross-sections at hadron colliders are usually sizable; in particular, in some kinematical regimes they behave in a non-perturbative way. In these cases the resummation of the whole perturbative series is needed for accurate phenomenological predictions. In this thesis the impact of threshold and high-energy resummations for the production of high invariant mass systems (Drell-Yan, Higgs) are studied in detail. In particular, in the threshold case a prescription to deal with the divergent nature of the perturbative series based on Borel summation is presented, and compared with the other prescriptions in the literature. Results for the invariant mass distributions and rapidity distributions are presented. The high-energy resummation formalism is reviewed and improved, and its impact in phenomenological applications at hadron colliders is investigated. We provide a quantitative determination of the effective partonic kinematics for Higgs production in gluon fusion in terms of the collider energy at the LHC. We use the result to assess, as a function of the Higgs mass, whether the large top mass approximation is adequate and whether Sudakov resummation is advantageous. We argue that our results hold to all perturbative orders. Based on it, we conclude that the full inclusion of finite top mass corrections is likely to be important for accurate phenomenology for a light Higgs with m_H ~ 125 GeV at the LHC with sqrt{s} = 14 TeV., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures. We compare threshold resummation in QCD, as performed using soft-collinear effective theory (SCET), to the standard perturbative QCD formalism based on factorization and resummation of Mellin moments of partonic cross-sections. We consider various forms of the SCET result, which correspond to different choices of the soft scale mu_s that characterizes this approach. We derive a master formula that relates the SCET resummation to the QCD result for any choice of mu_s. We then use it first, to show that if SCET resummation is performed in N-Mellin moment space by suitable choice of mu_s it is equivalent to the standard perturbative approach. Next, we show that if SCET resummation is performed by choosing for mu_s a partonic momentum variable, the perturbative result for partonic resummed cross-sections is again reproduced, but like its standard perturbative counterpart it is beset by divergent behaviour at the endpoint. Finally, using the master formula we show that when mu_s is chosen as a hadronic momentum variable the SCET and standard approach are related through a multiplicative (convolutive) factor, which contains the dependence on the Landau pole and associated divergence. This factor depends on the luminosity in a non-universal way; it lowers by one power of log the accuracy of the resummed result, but it is otherwise subleading if one assumes the luminosity not to contain logarithmically enhanced terms. Therefore, the SCET approach can be turned into a prescription to remove the Landau pole from the perturbative result, but the price to pay for this is the reduction by one logarithmic power of the accuracy at each order and the need to make assumptions on the parton luminosity., Comment: 25 pages, no figures. We examine critically the theoretical underpinnings and phenomenological implications of soft gluon (threshold) resummation of rapidity distributions at a hadron collider, taking Drell-Yan production at the Tevatron and the LHC as a reference test case. First, we show that in perturbative QCD soft gluon resummation is necessary whenever the partonic (rather the hadronic) center-of-mass energy is close enough to threshold, and we provide tools to assess when resummation is relevant for a given process. Then, we compare different prescriptions for handling the divergent nature of the series of resummed perturbative corrections, specifically the minimal and Borel prescriptions. We assess the intrinsic ambiguities of resummed results, both due to the asymptotic nature of their perturbative expansion, and to the treatment of subleading terms. Turning to phenomenology, we introduce a fast and accurate method for the implementation of resummation with the minimal and Borel prescriptions using an expansion on a basis of Chebyshev polynomials. We then present results for W and Z production as well as both high- and low-mass dilepton pairs at the LHC, and show that soft gluon resummation effects are generally comparable in size to NNLO corrections, but sometimes affected by substantial ambiguities., Comment: 75 pages, 34 figures, pdflatex

We present a phenomenological study of Drell-Yan pair production at hadron colliders based on the NNLO fixed order calculation and on NNLL resummation of threshold logarithms. We give an argument to prove that resummation effects are relevant also for values of x=M^2/s far from threshold. We compare different prescriptions for the calculation of resummed quantities, emphasizing the differences coming from subleading terms, which are important when x is small. We present a new prescription for the resummation of contributions due to soft gluon emission to the trasverse momentum distribution of processes such as Drell-Yan production in hadronic collisions. We show that familiar difficulties in obtaining resummed results as a function of transverse momentum starting from impact-parameter space resummation are related to the divergence of the perturbative expansion of the momentum-space result. We construct a resummed expression by Borel resummation of this divergent series, removing the divergence in the Borel inversion through the inclusion of a suitable higher twist term. The ensuing resummation prescription is free of numerical instabilities, is stable upon the inclusion of subleading terms, and the original divergent perturbative series is asymptotic to it. We compare our results to those obtained using alternative prescriptions, and discuss the ambiguities related to the resummation procedure., Comment: 18 pages, 4 figures, LaTeX.
