Abstract

Optimizing guided wave (GW) examinations or interpreting GW measurements can be greatly helped by simulation tools dealing with complex propagation and scattering phenomena. Tools are developed exploiting the modal nature of GW, this simplifying interpretation (no postprocessing as required when results are computed without reference to modes). Two modal formulations simulate measurements (pitch-catch, pulse-echo); they link a semi-analytic finite element code for computing modes, models for transducer diffraction and a specific finite element model for scattering by arbitrary discontinuities. Abstract

International audience, We present a theoretical study of electromagnetic reflection and cavity modes of 1D-sub-wavelength rectangular metallic gratings exposed to TE-polarised light. Computations are made using the modal development proposed by Sheng et al .[Phys. Rev. B, 26 (1982), 2907--2916] and are a generalisation of those used by Barbara et al. [Eur. Phys. J. D, 23 (2003), 143--154]. In particular we study the influence of the choice of boundary conditions on the metallic surfaces on the mode coefficients.

Abstract

We present a numerical study of electromagnetic reflection and cavity modes of 1D-sub-wavelength rectangular metallic gratings exposed to TM-polarized light. Computations are made using the modal development. In particular we study the influence of the choice of boundary conditions on the metallic surfaces on the determination of modes, on specular reflectance and cavity mode amplitudes. Our full real-metal approach shows some advantages when compared to former results since it is in better accordance with experimental results., Comment: 17 pages
