1. The effect of branchless collisions and population control on correlations in Monte Carlo power iteration

Abstract

The investigation of correlations in Monte Carlo power iteration has been long dominated by the question of generational correlations and their effects on the estimation of statistical uncertainties. More recently, there has been a growing interest in spatial correlations, prompted by the discovery of neutron clustering. Despite several attempts, a comprehensive framework concerning how Monte Carlo sampling strategies, population control and variance reduction methods affect the strength of such correlations is still lacking. In this work, we propose a set of global and local (i.e., space-dependent) tallies that can be used to characterize the impact of correlations. These tallies encompass the Shannon entropy, the pair distance, the normalized variance and the Feynman moment. In order to have a clean, yet fully meaningful setting, we carry out our analysis in a few homogeneous and heterogeneous benchmark problems of varying dominance ratio. Several classes of collision sampling strategies, population control and variance reduction techniques are tested, and their relative advantages and drawbacks are assessed with respect to the proposed tallies. Abstract

Photoexcitation yields of the 115mIn metastable state were measured with Bremsstrahlung γ beams over a range of endpoint energies between 4.5 and 18 MeV. An effective cross section of the 115In(γ,γ′)115mIn photoexcitation cross section was determinedto reproduce the data. This cross section is built from a cross section calculated with the TALYS code, to which an enhancement is added at about 8.5 MeV.

Abstract

BackgroundPrior studies indicated a decrease in the incidences of aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage (aSAH) during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. We evaluated differences in the incidence, severity of aSAH presentation, and ruptured aneurysm treatment modality during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic compared with the preceding year.MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectional study including 49 countries and 187 centres. We recorded volumes for COVID-19 hospitalisations, aSAH hospitalisations, Hunt-Hess grade, coiling, clipping and aSAH in-hospital mortality. Diagnoses were identified by International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, codes or stroke databases from January 2019 to May 2021.ResultsOver the study period, there were 16 247 aSAH admissions, 344 491 COVID-19 admissions, 8300 ruptured aneurysm coiling and 4240 ruptured aneurysm clipping procedures. Declines were observed in aSAH admissions (−6.4% (95% CI −7.0% to −5.8%), p=0.0001) during the first year of the pandemic compared with the prior year, most pronounced in high-volume SAH and high-volume COVID-19 hospitals. There was a trend towards a decline in mild and moderate presentations of subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) (mild: −5% (95% CI −5.9% to –4.3%), p=0.06; moderate: −8.3% (95% CI −10.2% to –6.7%), p=0.06) but no difference in higher SAH severity. The ruptured aneurysm clipping rate remained unchanged (30.7% vs 31.2%, p=0.58), whereas ruptured aneurysm coiling increased (53.97% vs 56.5%, p=0.009). There was no difference in aSAH in-hospital mortality rate (19.1% vs 20.1%, p=0.12).ConclusionDuring the first year of the pandemic, there was a decrease in aSAH admissions volume, driven by a decrease in mild to moderate presentation of aSAH. There was an increase in the ruptured aneurysm coiling rate but neither change in the ruptured aneurysm clipping rate nor change in aSAH in-hospital mortality.Trial registration numberNCT04934020.

Abstract

Plasma rotation proves to have important effects on the improvement of the confinement and on the entrance into the H-mode of improved confinement in tokamaks. To consider this issue, we propose to determine numerically the steady states of the visco-resistive MHD equations including the non-linear (v.∇)v term. We take into account the external electric field in the toroidal direction used to create the toroidal current required in a tokamak to create the poloidal component of the magnetic field. Numerical results in JET and ITER geometries obtained using the finite element programming language FreeFem++ are presented. We consider realistic values of the resistivity η and vary the viscosity, ν, of which the realistic order of magnitude is poorly known. The axisymmetric steady-state visco-resistive MHD equations with symmetric boundary conditions are solved using a continuation method on ν and a Newton-Raphson scheme to handle the nonlinearity. Abstract

Expérience GANIL/CSS1/VAMOS; We report on the first application of in-flight fast-timingmeasurements, a method developed in order to directly measure lifetimes in the picosecond to nanosecond range. As a proof of principle of the method, lifetimes of the states belonging to the ground-state band in 152Sm are measured up to the 8+ 1 state. An excellent agreement with recommended values is found. A slightly improved determination of the spectroscopic quadrupole moment of the 4+ 1 state is also reported. In-flight fast-timing measurements open interesting opportunities for future studies of collective properties in radioactive nuclei.

Abstract

Photoexcitation yields of the 115mIn metastable state were measured with Bremsstrahlung γ beams over a range of endpoint energies between 4.5 and 18 MeV. An effective cross section of the 115In(γ, γ)115mIn photoexcitation cross section was determined to reproduce the data. This cross section is built from a cross section calculated with the TALYS code, to which an enhancement is added at about 8.5 MeV. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In a communication to the Geological Society, ?On the formation of Cirques, and their bearing upon theories attributing the excavation of Alpine valleys mainly to the action of Glaciers,? I confined myself to the examination of Cirques in sedimentary strata, and these to a large extent calcareous. I observed this restriction because the most typical examples, so far as I could ascertain, lay in non-crystalline districts, and because my own experience bad not presented to me any very striking instances in other districts. The present brief paper is an attempt to show that, under favourable circumstances, the principles there laid down may also be applied to regions wherein crystalline rock exists.

Abstract

The most interesting series of specimens in this collection comes from Desolation Valley glacier, on the southern side of the Canadian Pacific Railway, and east of the watershed. These are: (1) A roughly pentagonal slab, about 9?? by 7? and from ?? to 1? thick, of a rather fine-grained quartzite, with some minute glittering crystals, but giving little or no effervescence with cold HCl. The surface is crowded with wavy cylinders, generally slightly flattened, varying in diameter from about ?55? to ?15? (but commonly about ?55?).

Abstract

A new prompt fission neutron spectra (PFNS) measurement in the 238U(n,f) reaction was performed at LANSCE/WNR facility. Evaluated data show discrepancies on the low (below 1 MeV) and high (above 5 MeV) energy parts in the PFNS for different major and minor actinides. The goal is to improve these measurements in a wide range of incident energy. The energy of the incoming neutron, inducing the fission, and the prompt neutron energies, are measured by time-of-flight method. A dedicated fission chamber was developed, in order to improve alpha-fission discrimination, timing resolution, actinide mass, and to reduce the amount of neutron scattering. To detect prompt neutrons, the 54 Chi-Nu scintillator cells array were surrounding the fission chamber. High statistics were recorded during this experiment, allowing a precise study of PFNS behavior as a function of incident neutron energy, from 1 MeV to 200 MeV. This experiment also showed that all the new tools developed to improve PFNS measurements are performing. Therefore, measurements of PFNS with others actinides such as 239Pu are planned.

49. P180 Managing pregnancy in pulmonary hypertension using a multi-professional approach: a 16-year experience in a specialist referral centre

Abstract

BackgroundPulmonary hypertension (PH) in pregnancy is associated with a high risk of maternal death (30%–50%). Despite risks, patients may actively plan pregnancy. Patients may also present whilst pregnant with previously undiagnosed PH.MethodsRetrospective review of patients presenting during pregnancy at a PH centre between 2001 and 2017.ResultsA total of 27 patients were identified over a 16 year period from 2001 till April 2017. Patients were classified as WHO group 1 (n=25) or group 4 (n=2). Eight of the 27 patients had 2 or more pregnancies and in total 36 pregnancies were managed during the study period. Of the 36 pregnancies, 20 resulted in live birth, 9 ended with medical termination and 7 resulted in a miscarriage. All patients were supervised by a multi-professional team (PH physicians, anaesthetists, obstetricians, intensivists and nurse specialists). 19 deliveries were by Caesarean section with 1 vaginal delivery and planned between 32 to 36 weeks; the earliest live birth was at 25+5 weeks post cardiorespiratory arrest at 25 weeks. Patients underwent epidural or combined spinal/epidural regional anaesthesia and were monitored peri-delivery in an intensive care environment with arterial and central venous access. Of 36 pregnancies, 2 women died within 6 months of delivery (3 and 28 days post-delivery) and none during pregnancy. Patients were followed until January 2017; mean follow up 64 months (range 0–174 months) after last pregnancy. The 5 year survival for all patients (n=27) from date of last pregnancy with PH was 92%.ConclusionMortality of PH in pregnancy in a setting of experienced and coordinated care is less than historical series but remains significant. Counselling women with PH of these risks remains an essential part of disease management. In the event of pregnancy, patients should be managed by a multiprofessional team with peripartum care in an intensive care environment.
