Thanks to the use of new digital technologies and innovations in materials, there has been an increasing interest in subperiosteal implants. These implants are considered to be helpful for the rehabilitation of severe jaw atrophies, as they overcome some disadvantages of endosseous implantology. In the present clinical retrospective study, 18 patients were treated and the clinical outcomes of the treatment were recorded after 12 months of follow-up.

By confining soft materials within tailored boundaries it is possible to design energy landscapes to address and control colloidal dynamics. This provides unique opportunities to create reconfigurable, hierarchically organized structures, a leading challenge in materials science. Example soft matter systems include liquid crystals. For instance, when nematic liquid crystals (NLCs) are confined in a vessel with undulated boundaries, bend and splay distortions can be used to position particles. Here we confine this system in a twist cell. We also study cholesteric liquid crystals, which have an "intrinsic" twist distortion which adds to the ones imposed by the solid boundaries. The cholesteric pitch competes with the other length scales in the system (colloid radius, vessel thickness, wavelength of boundary undulations), enriching the possible configurations. Depending on the pitch-to-radius and pitch-to-thickness ratios the interaction can be attractive or repulsive. By tuning the pitch (i.e. changing the concentration of the chiral dopant), it is possible to selectively promote or inhibit particle trapping at the docking sites.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to new approaches to manage patients outside the ICU, including prone positioning in non-intubated patients.Objectives: To report the use of prolonged active prone positioning in spontaneously breathing patients with COVID-19-associated acute respiratory failure. Spontaneously breathing vs non-invasive respiratory support for COVID19 associated acute respiratory failure.Methods: Patients with PaO2/FiO2 > 150, with lung posterior consolidations as assessed by means of lung ultrasound, and chest x-ray were studied. Under continuous pulse oximetry (SpO2) monitoring, patients maintained active prone position. A PaO2/FiO2 < 150 was considered as treatment failure and patients had to be switched to non-invasive respiratory support. Retrospectively, data of 16 patients undergoing who refused proning and underwent non-invasive respiratory support were used as controls. The primary outcome was the proportion of patients maintaining prolonged prone position and discharged home. Secondary outcomes included improvement in oxygenation, hospital length of stay, and 6-month survival.Results: Three out of 16 (18.7%) patients did not tolerate the procedure. Three more patients showed a worsening in PaO2/FiO2 to 150, active prolonged prone positioning was feasible and tolerated with significant improvement in oxygenation.

Gorham’s disease, or vanishing bone disease, is a rare condition of unknown etiology characterized by bone absorption. The disease can affect any part of the skeleton, however the pelvis, humerus, axial skeleton and the mandible are more frequently involved. The mechanism of bone resorption is unclear, but localized endothelial proliferation of lymphatic vessels is shown in osteolytic lesions The diagnosis is based on clinical, radiological and histological features after excluding other infectious, inflammatory, endocrine and neoplastic etiological factors. Medical treatment for Gorham’s disease includes anti-osteoclastic medications (bisphosphonates), and alpha-2b interferon, radiation therapy induced sclerosis of the proliferating vascular tissue within the bone. Also surgical treatment options are available including resection of the lesion and reconstruction with bone grafts and/or prostheses. We present a case of Gorham’s disease of the right maxilla in a 67 years old female affecting the alveolar process, zygoma and the floor of the orbit. The initial clinical manifestation at the onset of the disease was the mobility of the upper right molars, mimicking periodontal disease followed by the worsening of a preexisting diplopia with undefined origin. The patient received a medical treatment with zoledronic acid, vitamin D and calcium carbonate for 12 months which proved to be effective in controlling the progression of the disease.

Abstract This case report documents a rare inversion of a closed metacarpal head fracture in the setting of polytrauma. Although rare, hemispherical articular bones can fracture and rotate 180°. Because of the symmetry of the bone and the rarity of an inverted, metacarpal head fracture, a delay in diagnosis and subsequent treatment can occur, which can lead to a poor outcome. This is particularly true in the setting of polytrauma. A 38‐year‐old male, polytrauma patient presented to the emergency department (ED) after falling off a bridge and being struck by an oncoming vehicle. He presented with multiple surgical fractures of the upper and lower extremities as well as his pelvis. Three days after he was brought to the ED, x‐rays were performed of his painful left hand, which revealed an extra‐articular third metacarpal head fracture, for which he underwent open reduction of the closed fracture. Both collateral ligaments were intact and the head fragment had inverted within the constraints of these ligaments. Some of the ligament and capsular tissue remained attached to the head fragment along the radial and ulnar margins but was otherwise entirely covered with cartilage. The reduction maneuver was difficult but after the reduction was achieved, the fracture appeared stable and no internal fixation was used. Post reduction, the injury was splinted for 2 weeks and then early motion was allowed. The fracture has since healed, and the patient has attained near‐full function of the finger and joint.

Nematic liquid crystals have a rich energy landscape which can define elastic fields to guide colloidal assembly. Here the authors show controllable trapping of colloidal particles by placing them in a system with wavy walls which are exploited to obtain stable, metastable and unstable equilibria.

We present a unique case of bladder perforation occurring intraoperatively during primary total hip arthroplasty. It is suspected that the patient's aberrant bladder anatomy, with idiopathic erosion of the quadrilateral space, predisposed the patient to bladder injury. Several preoperative risk factors for bladder injury were identified in the literature. These factors include cemented acetabular components, previous history of hip arthroplasty, history of pelvic trauma or intrapelvic surgery, and poor bone quality. Management of bladder injury, should it occur, includes bladder decompression with a Foley catheter, antibiotic administration, hemodynamic monitoring, and urology consult with close follow-up. This case reinforces the importance of urologic preoperative evaluation for anatomic variations of the bladder. In such cases, intraoperative Foley catheters to prevent distension may reduce the risk of perforation.
