2. Effectiveness of Forgiveness Training Programs in University Contexts: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract

This research offers a systematic review and meta-analysis of forgiveness training programs conducted with university students. A search of international databases (Web of Science, SCOPUS, PUBMED and Dialnet) revealed 316 articles published up to 2023, 20 of these articles were finally included in the systematic review, following the PRISMA protocol. Of these, eleven randomized-controlled trials (n = 11) and one quasi-experimental study (n = 1) were used in the meta-analysis. The results of the analysis show that Forgiveness Interventions (FI) have a positive effect on the capacity to forgive in experimental groups which showed significantly higher scores in empathy, self-esteem and hope, with a reduction in negative symptomologies such as anxiety and depression. The findings also suggest that an important facilitating variable in FI is the length of the interventions. The two most commonly utilized programs were Worthington's REACH program and the Enright Forgiveness Process Model. The intervention program used both face-to-face sessions with trainers and autonomous group work sessions. Given the significant benefits these programs offer in terms of mental health and well-being, it is recommended that FI programs should be offered at universities and colleges as part of a comprehensive and truly competence-based education.

11. A Practical Guide to Developing Virtual and Augmented Reality Exercises for Teaching Structural Biology

Abstract

Although virtual and augmented reality (VR and AR) techniques have been used extensively in specialized laboratories, only recently did they become affordable, reaching wider consumer markets. With increased availability, it is timely to examine the roles that VR and AR may play in teaching structural biology and in experiencing complex data sets such as macromolecular structures. This guide is suitable for those teachers of structural biology who do not have a deep knowledge of information technologies. This study focuses on three questions: 1) How can teachers of structural biology produce and disseminate VR/AR-ready educational material with established and user-friendly software tools?; 2) What are the positive and negative experiences reported by test participants when performing identical learning tasks in the VR and AR environments?; and 3) How do the test participants perceive prerecorded narration during VR/AR exploration?

15. Numerical Study of Ballistic Performance in Level III SiC Ceramic Multilayered UHMWPE Ballistic Plates

Abstract

This study investigates the ballistic resistance of composite plates composed of a silicon carbide (SiC) strike face and ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) layers against 7.62 mm NATO caliber projectiles using Ansys Explicit Dynamics. Five ballistic plate samples were numerically modeled, featuring 40 to 60 UHMWPE layers and a 4 mm SiC strike face. The simulation assessed the plates' response, including backface signature, bullet penetration depth, absorbed kinetic energy, and deformation mechanisms. The findings revealed that increasing the UHMWPE thickness reduces both the backface signature and bullet penetration depth. Plates with 50 to 60 layers of UHMWPE met level III NIJ standards, demonstrating lower backface signatures and bullet penetration compared to those with 40 or 45 layers. Thicker UHMWPE layers were associated with reduced deformation, with the plate featuring 60 layers of UHMWPE and an overall thickness of 25 mm emerging as the optimal configuration for level III ballistic protection.

18. Group Training in Interpersonal Problem-Solving Skills for Workplace Adaptation of Adolescents and Adults with Asperger Syndrome: A Preliminary Study

Abstract

Adults with Asperger syndrome show persistent difficulties in social situations which psychosocial treatments may address. Despite the multiple studies focusing on social skills interventions, only some have focused specifically on problem-solving skills and have not targeted workplace adaptation training in the adult population. This study describes preliminary data from a group format manual-based intervention, the Interpersonal Problem-Solving for Workplace Adaptation Programme, aimed at improving the cognitive and metacognitive process of social problem-solving skills focusing on typical social situations in the workplace based on mediation as the main strategy. A total of 50 adults with Asperger syndrome received the programme and were compared with a control group of typical development. The feasibility and effectiveness of the treatment were explored. Participants were assessed at pre-treatment and post-treatment on a task of social problem-solving skills and two secondary measures of socialisation and work profile using self- and caregiver-report. Using a variety of methods, the results showed that scores were significantly higher at post-treatment in the social problem-solving task and socialisation skills based on reports by parents. Differences in comparison to the control group had decreased after treatment. The treatment was acceptable to families and subject adherence was high. The Interpersonal Problem-Solving for Workplace Adaptation Programme appears to be a feasible training programme.

Abstract

Las cuestiones éticas toman relevancia en la práctica médica actual, sobre todo al final de la vida. La limitación del esfuerzo terapéutico (LET), entendiendo por tal «no iniciar» o «retirar» medidas de soporte vital, se presenta como alternativa para preservar la dignidad del paciente, cuando la muerte se aproxima. Los dilemas éticos que se suscitan en este contexto han sido ampliamente estudiados en adultos; no así en niños, donde la gran tensión psicológica que experimentan padres y profesionales dificulta una toma de decisiones consensuada y éticamente aceptable. El objetivo de este trabajo ha sido entender el concepto de LET y los principios deontológicos que la sostienen en el ámbito pediátrico. El propósito no ha sido otro que el de establecer mejoras en el cuidado del niño moribundo cuyo peculiar desenlace hace necesario un abordaje diferente al del adulto y una clarificación conceptual ética que justifique la práctica de la LET en menores.

Abstract

The main purpose of this study is to evaluate the potential clinical impact of pharmacogenetic testing on the reduction of the toxicity in patients treated with fluoropyrimidines. This will be achieved by comparing the frequency of adverse events and the incidence of toxicity of two groups of patients that will differ from each other only in that one will receive pharmacogenetic counseling. The hypothesis is that availability of a pharmacogenetic report prior to treatment initiation has a positive effect. One of the main secondary goals is to analyze allele frequencies and the association of polymorphisms rs895819 (miR27A) and rs1801160 (DPYD*6) with toxicity by conducting an observational study to determine their clinical relevance and standardize a dose adjustment recommendation.

50. The structure of the second CysD domain of MUC2 and role in mucin organization by transglutaminase-based cross-linking

Abstract

The MUC2 mucin protects the colonic epithelium by a two-layered mucus with an inner attached bacteria-free layer and an outer layer harboring commensal bacteria. CysD domains are 100 amino-acid-long sequences containing 10 cysteines that separate highly O-glycosylated proline, threonine, serine (PTS) regions in mucins. The structure of the second CysD, CysD2, of MUC2 is now solved by nuclear magnetic resonance. CysD2 shows a stable stalk region predicted to be partly covered by adjacent O-glycans attached to neighboring PTS sequences, whereas the CysD2 tip with three flexible loops is suggested to be well exposed. It shows transient dimer interactions at acidic pH, weakened at physiological pH. This transient interaction can be stabilized in vitroand in vivoby transglutaminase 3-catalyzed isopeptide bonds, preferring a specific glutamine residue on one flexible loop. This covalent dimer is modeled suggesting that CysD domains act as connecting hubs for covalent stabilization of mucins to form a protective mucus.
