16. Framing Coherence Across EU Policies Towards Integrated Wildfire Risk Management and Nature-Based Solutions.

Abstract

Wildfire risk has been exacerbated across Europe by climate change favoring more damaging and severe wildfire events. This evolving wildfire risk context interacts with a broad landscape of EU policies including those on nature conservation, forestry, bioeconomy or climate and energy, all of which may increase or reduce fire hazard and the level of exposure and vulnerability of the values at risk. Coherently addressed, policies may support wildfire disaster risk management synergistically while reducing potential dysfunctions. This research conducts a content analysis of EU policies and initiatives under the European Green Deal with respect to integrated wildfire risk management and related nature-based solutions. The results show that a consistent EU policy framework to address wildfire risk reduction in a synergic way exists, with no major conflicts in the policy design. Nevertheless, better guidance on fire-smart land management practices and the conceptualization of wildfire-related nature-based solutions may enhance a more coherent policy implementation. Additional suggestions around the legal status of wildfire protection and 'whole of government' governance frameworks are discussed. Notably, within the laws, policies and initiatives analyzed, the beneficial side of fire addressed by integrated fire management is either missing or not explicitly mentioned, although it is considered in policy-related supporting guidelines. Abstract

The first science flight of the balloon-borne \Sunrise telescope took place in June 2009 from ESRANGE (near Kiruna/Sweden) to Somerset Island in northern Canada. We describe the scientific aims and mission concept of the project and give an overview and a description of the various hardware components: the 1-m main telescope with its postfocus science instruments (the UV filter imager SuFI and the imaging vector magnetograph IMaX) and support instruments (image stabilizing and light distribution system ISLiD and correlating wavefront sensor CWS), the optomechanical support structure and the instrument mounting concept, the gondola structure and the power, pointing, and telemetry systems, and the general electronics architecture. We also explain the optimization of the structural and thermal design of the complete payload. The preparations for the science flight are described, including AIV and ground calibration of the instruments. The course of events during the science flight is outlined, up to the recovery activities. Finally, the in-flight performance of the instrumentation is briefly summarized., Comment: 35 pages, 17 figures

Abstract

Mycorrhizal fungi can help plants to cope with drought, but research on the fungal communities that are more resistant to drought or alleviate drought stress of trees is still scarce. In this study, we investigated effects of drought on soil fungal communities and explored potential fungal traits related to drought resistance under greenhouse conditions. We manipulated water availability in pine seedlings belonging to three Spanish Pinus pinaster populations from geographical areas subjected to contrasting summer drought. A set of plant ecophysiological traits were quantified and soil fungi was quantified and profiled using ergosterol and Pacific Biosciences sequencing. Abundance of ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi in plants subjected to drought was lower than in well-watered plants. Most ECM taxa in plants surviving drought had long exploration types and were taxa typically forming rhizomorphs and hydrophobic mycelia. By contrast, ECM taxa in well-watered plants had wider range of distinct exploration types. No differences in fungal communities were found among P. pinaster populations. No associations between ECM fungi and plant ecophysiological traits were found, but significant interactions between drought treatments and belowground plant biomass were found for the relative abundances of ECM fungi, particularly ECM with long exploration types. Plants subjected to drought may benefit by associating to ECM taxa previously shown to transport water efficiently.

Abstract

Forest dynamics are driven by micro‐disturbances leading to gap formation. Root rot pathogens can cause mortality to adult trees, which die forming gaps. However, little is known about the biotic and abiotic factors that govern gap creation and expansion such as tree infection or drought resilience, and what are the consequences for nutrient cycling and soil microbiota.We studied the dynamics of gaps created by Heterobasidion abietinum in mountain silver fir (Abies alba) forests from the Spanish Central Pyrenees. Tree‐ring width information was used to evaluate growth patterns of trees located within and at the edge of gaps and under closed canopy conditions. We analysed soil nutrient content and microbial structure at different positions with respect to the gap. Soil fungal community was also characterized by sequencing the ITS2 region.Gaps created by H. abietinum ranged 582–1072 m2 and gathered large amounts of standing and laying dead wood biomass amounting to up to 500 m3 ha−1 of coarse woody debris. This indicates that tree mortality had been occurring over decades, and it was preceded by a long‐term growth decline and impaired drought resilience. Root rot affected trees beyond the current limit of the gaps leading to growth decline, preventing canopy closure and allowing the release of suppressed trees within the gap. Gap formation did neither affect soil fertility nor fungal and bacterial biomass and diversity, but long‐distance ectomycorrhizal fungi were more abundant within gaps.Synthesis. Root rot pathogens play key ecological roles in forest dynamics at fine spatial scale. Heterobasidion abietinum infection, and its interaction with drought, creates and expands gaps by killing large trees and preventing surrounding trees from closing the gap. Abstract

Tree phenology is sensitive to climate warming and changes in seasonal precipitation. Long xylogenesis records are scarce, thus limiting our ability to analyse how radial growth responds to climate variability. Alternatively, process-based growth models can be used to simulate intra-annual growth dynamics and to better understand why growth bimodality varies along temperature and precipitation gradients. We used the Vaganov-Shashkin (VS) growth model to analyse the main climatic drivers of growth bimodality in eight trees and shrubs conifers (four pines and four junipers) across Spain. We selected eleven sites with different continentality degree and spring/autumn precipitation ratios since we expected to find pronounced bimodal growth in less continental sites with spring and autumn precipitation peaks. The VS model successfully simulated annual growth rates at all sites as a function of daily temperature and soil moisture data. Bimodal growth patterns clustered into less continental sites showing low spring/autumn precipitation ratios. This finding agrees with observed climate-growth associations showing that growth was enhanced by wet-cool winter-to-spring conditions, but also by wet autumn conditions in the most bimodal sites. We observed a stronger growth bimodality in pines compared to junipers. We discuss the spatial variability of climate drivers in bimodality growth pattern and how increasing continentality and shifts in seasonal precipitation could affect growth patterns. Bimodality could be an advantageous response to overcome summer drought in Mediterranean forests. The ability of some species to reactivate growth during autumn might determine their capacity to withstand increasing summer aridity.

Abstract

Els fongs exerceixen un paper clau en el funcionament de qualsevol unitat o part de la biosfera on hi hagi flux d’energia, ja que participen activament en la seva adquisició, distribució i organització funcional; en particular, en els ecosistemes forestals. Així doncs, els fongs duen a terme una àmplia varietat de funcions i interaccions entre ells i/o altres organismes dins dels ecosistemes, i esdevenen elements fonamentals en la dinàmica espaciotemporal de qualsevol bosc i altres formacions vegetals. Un ecosistema forestal inclou un component autotròfic, constituït per les diferents espècies d’arbres i plantes que, tal com evidencia el registre fòssil, han evolucionat conjuntament amb els fongs des que van colonitzar el medi terrestre (micorrizes, fongs endòfits i líquens) i un component heterotròfic constituït per organismes vius que necessiten matèria orgànica prèviament elaborada per nodrir-se i créixer. Dins d’aquest segon component, és usual distingir-ne un constituït per consumidors (herbívors i carnívors) i un format pels organismes descomponedors o saprobis —fongs i bacteris—, que processen la matèria orgànica per transformar-la en compostos inorgànics accessibles de nou per als autòtrofs. És important afegir que els fongs, com a grup, no són redundants ni funcionalment intercanviables amb els bacteris descomponedors. La diversitat de fongs en general ha passat desapercebuda a l’hora de gestionar i conservar un ecosistema forestal. No obstant això, en l’actualitat, forestals, ecòlegs i gestors estan reconeixent que la productivitat dels boscos, la regeneració i l’estabilitat de l’ecosistema depenen en gran mesura dels organismes i els processos presents al sòl. El desconeixement sobre la presència de determinades espècies i els efectes que tenen els canvis globals (canvi climàtic, canvis d’ús del sòl, etc.) sobre la seva continuïtat poden suposar una important pèrdua de biodiversitat. Avui dia sabem que en els ecosistemes terrestres podem perdre moltes espècies i no comprometre la funcionalitat ni els serveis ecosistèmics, i que les espècies realment importants són, generalment, bacteris, insectes i fongs. Abstract

Deadwood is a large global carbon store with its store size partially determined by biotic decay. Microbial wood decay rates are known to respond to changing temperature and precipitation. Termites are also important decomposers in the tropics but are less well studied. An understanding of their climate sensitivities is needed to estimate climate change effects on wood carbon pools. Using data from 133 sites spanning six continents, we found that termite wood discovery and consumption were highly sensitive to temperature (with decay increasing >6.8 times per 10°C increase in temperature)—even more so than microbes. Termite decay effects were greatest in tropical seasonal forests, tropical savannas, and subtropical deserts. With tropicalization (i.e., warming shifts to tropical climates), termite wood decay will likely increase as termites access more of Earth’s surface. Abstract

Aim of study: To explore the diversity of soil fungi found in black truffle (Tuber melanosporum) plantations following the introduction of the mycorrhizal-colonized host tree, (Quercus ilex), through the development of the brûlé and production of mature sporocarps.Area of study: This research was carried out province of Teruel, Aragon (central eastern Spain).Material and Methods: Soil samples from 6 plantations were collected beneath Q. ilex trees inoculated with T. melanosporum, of 3, 5, 7, 10, 14 and 20 years after out planting in truffle plantations. Soil DNA was extracted, PCR-amplified and sequenced to compare soil fungi present at different ages.Main results: As tree age increased, we observed an increased frequency of T. melanosporum (from 8% to 71% of sequenced colonies) and concomitant decrease in the combined frequency of Fusarium spp. and Phoma spp. (from 64% to 3%).Research highlights: There are important shifts in species richness and in functional groups in the soil fungal communities in maturing black truffle-oak woodland plantations. The observed inverse relationship between the frequency of soil endophytic and/or pathogenic fungi and that of the mycorrhizal mutualist T. melanosporum provides support to continue a deeper analysis of shifts in fungal communities and functional groups where there is a transition from agriculture fields to woodlands.Abbreviations used: Ectomycorrhiza (ECM) fungus; Vesicular arbuscular mycorrhiza (VAM); Operational taxonomic unit (OTU).

Abstract

Deadwood is a large global carbon store with its store size partially determined by biotic decay. Microbial wood decay rates are known to respond to changing temperature and precipitation. Termites are also important decomposers in the tropics but are less well studied. An understanding of their climate sensitivities is needed to estimate climate change effects on wood carbon pools. Using data from 133 sites spanning six continents, we found that termite wood discovery and consumption were highly sensitive to temperature (with decay increasing >6.8 times per 10°C increase in temperature)—even more so than microbes. Termite decay effects were greatest in tropical seasonal forests, tropical savannas, and subtropical deserts. With tropicalization (i.e., warming shifts to tropical climates), termite wood decay will likely increase as termites access more of Earth’s surface.
