We use the Atacama Large sub/Millimetre Array (ALMA) to efficiently observe spectral lines across Bands 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 at high-resolution (0.5" - 0.1") for 16 bright southern Herschel sources at $1.5 < z < 4.2$. With only six and a half hours of observations, we reveal 66 spectral lines in 17 galaxies. These observations detect emission from CO (3-2) to CO(18-17), as well as atomic ([CI](1-0), (2-1), [OI] 145 $\mu$m and [NII] 205 $\mu$m) lines. Additional molecular lines are seen in emission (${\rm H_2O}$ and ${\rm H_2O^+}$) and absorption (OH$^+$ and CH$^+$). The morphologies based on dust continuum ranges from extended sources to strong lensed galaxies with magnifications between 2 and 30. CO line transitions indicate a diverse set of excitation conditions with a fraction of the sources ($\sim 35$%) showcasing dense, warm gas. The resolved gas to star-formation surface densities vary strongly per source, and suggest that the observed diversity of dusty star-forming galaxies could be a combination of lensed, compact dusty starbursts and extended, potentially-merging galaxies. The predicted gas depletion timescales are consistent with 100 Myr to 1 Gyr, but require efficient fueling from the extended gas reservoirs onto the more central starbursts, in line with the Doppler-shifted absorption lines that indicate inflowing gas for two out of six sources. This pilot paper explores a successful new method of observing spectral lines in large samples of galaxies, supports future studies of larger samples, and finds that the efficiency of this new observational method will be further improved with the planned ALMA Wideband Sensitivity Upgrade., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 42 pages, including 20 figures + spectra. The phenomenon of magnification bias can induce a non-negligible angular correlation between two samples of galaxies with nonoverlapping redshift distributions. This signal is particularly clear when background submillimeter galaxies are used, and has been shown to constitute an independent cosmological probe. This work extends prior studies on the submillimeter galaxy magnification bias to the massive neutrino scenario, with the aim being to assess its sensitivity as a cosmological observable to the sum of neutrino masses. The measurements of the angular cross-correlation function between moderate redshift GAMA galaxies and high-redshift submillimeter H-ATLAS galaxies are fit to the weak lensing prediction down to the arcmin scale. The signal is interpreted under the halo model, which is modified to accommodate massive neutrinos. We discuss the impact of the choice of cosmological parametrization on the sensitivity to neutrino masses. The currently available data on the magnification bias affecting submillimeter galaxies are sensitive to neutrino masses when a cosmological parametrization in terms of the primordial amplitude of the power spectrum $(A_s$) is chosen over the local root mean square of smoothed linear density perturbations $(\sigma_8$). A clear upper limit on the sum of neutrino masses can be derived if the value of $A_s$ is either fixed or assigned a narrow Gaussian prior, a behavior that is robust against changes to the chosen value., Comment: Accepted in A&A

Gravitational lensing is a powerful tool for studying the distribution of mass in the Universe. Understanding the magnification bias effect in gravitational lensing and its impact on the flux of sub-millimetre galaxies (SMGs) is crucial for accurate interpretations of observational data. This study aims to investigate the magnification bias effect and analyse the mass density profiles of different types of foreground lenses, including quasi-stellar objects, galaxies, and clusters. The specific goals are to compare the lens types, assess the impact of angular resolution on the analysis, and determine the adequacy of theoretical mass density profiles in explaining the observed data, using four different theoretical mass density profiles. The magnification bias was estimated using the cross-correlation function between the positions of background SMGs and foreground lens samples. Stacking techniques were employed to enhance the signal at smaller angular separations, and the more precise positions from the WISE catalogue were utilised to improve positional accuracy. The cross-correlation measurements revealed distinctive central excess and outer power-law profiles, with a lack of signal in the intermediate region. The analysis of mass density profiles indicated limitations in the selected profiles' ability to explain the observed data, highlighting the need for additional considerations. The results suggest the presence of isolated galactic halos and the importance of considering environmental factors and close satellites in future investigations. The derived masses and best-fit parameters contribute to our understanding of lensing systems and provide constraints on the nature of central galaxies. Notably, the intriguing lack of signal around 10 arcsec challenges current understanding and calls for further quantitative analysis and confirmation of the observed feature.

Recovering the polarized cosmic microwave background (CMB) is crucial for shading light on Cosmic Inflation. Methods with different characteristics should be developed and optimized. We aim to use a neural network called CENN and train it for recovering the E and B modes of the CMB. We train the network with realistic simulations of 256x256 pixel squared patches at 100, 143 and 217 GHz Planck channels, which contain the CMB, thermal dust, synchrotron, PS and noise. We make several trainings sets: 30, 25 and 20 arcmin resolution patches at the same position in the sky. After being trained, CENN is able to recover the CMB signal at 143 GHz in Q and U patches. Then, we use NaMaster for estimating the EE and BB power spectrum for each input and output patches in the test dataset, as well as the difference between input and output power spectra and the residuals. We also test the methodology using a different foreground model at 5 arcmin resolution without noise. We recover the E-mode generally founding residuals bellow the input signal at all scales. In particular, we found a value of about 0.1 muK2 at l<200, decreasing below 0.01 muK2 at smaller scales. For the B-mode, we similarly recover the CMB with residuals between 0.01 and 0.001 muK2. We also train the network with 5 arcmin Planck simulations without noise, obtaining clearly better results with respect the previous cases. For a different foreground model, the recovery is similar, although B-mode residuals increase above the input signal. In general, we found that, the network performs better when training with the same resolution used for testing. Based on the results, CENN seems to be a promising for recovering both E and B modes at sub-degree scales in ground-base experiments such as POLARBEAR, SO and CMB-S4. This paper is the third in a series on submillimeter galaxy magnification bias, focusing on the tomographic scenario. It refines the methodology used to constrain the halo occupation distribution model and cosmological parameters within a flat $\Lambda$CDM model, using updated data. The study aims to optimize CPU time, explore strategies for analyzing different redshift bins, and assess the impact of excluding the GAMA15 field. The tomographic approach involves dividing the redshift range into bins and analyzing cross-correlation measurements between submillimeter and foreground galaxies. The results show good agreement between the mean-redshift and full model cases, with an increase in the minimum mass of lenses at higher redshifts. The inferred cosmological parameters have narrower posterior distributions, indicating reduced measurement uncertainties compared to previous studies. Excluding the GAMA15 field reduces the cross-correlation signal, suggesting sample variance within the large-scale structure. Extending the redshift range improves robustness against sample variance and produces similar but tighter constraints. The measurement of the cross-correlation function is crucial to assess magnification bias in galaxy surveys. Previous works used mini-tile subsampling, but accurately determining the integral constraint (IC) correction for unbiased estimation is challenging due to various factors. We present a new methodology for estimating the cross-correlation function, utilizing full field area and reducing statistical uncertainty. Covariance matrices were estimated by dividing each field into at least five patches using a k-mean clustering algorithm. Robustness was assessed by comparing spectroscopic and photometric lens samples, yielding compatible results. Cross-correlation and auto-correlation analyses in the GAMA fields revealed a stronger signal in GAMA15, likely due to rare large-scale structure combinations. Our findings highlight the robustness of the new methodology and suggest sample-specific effects. Constraining the polarisation properties of extragalactic point sources is a relevant task not only because they are one of the main contaminants for primordial cosmic microwave background B-mode detection if the tensor-to-scalar ratio is lower than r = 0.001, but also for a better understanding of the properties of radio-loud active galactic nuclei. We develop and train a machine learning model based on a convolutional neural network to learn how to estimate the polarisation flux density and angle of point sources embedded in cosmic microwave background images knowing only their positions. To train the neural network, we use realistic simulations of patches of area 32x32 pixels at the 217 GHz Planck channel with injected point sources at their centres. The patches also contain a realistic background composed by dust, the CMB and instrumental noise. Firstly, we study the comparison between true and estimated polarisation flux densities for P, Q and U. Secondly, we analyse the comparison between true and estimated polarisation angles. Finally, we study the performance of our model with real data and we compare our results against the PCCS2. We obtain that our model is reliable to constrain the polarisation flux above 80 mJy. For this limit, we obtain errors lower than 30%. Training the same network with Q and U, the reliability limit is above +-250 mJy for determining the polarisation angle of both Q and U sources with a 1sigma uncertainty of +-29deg and +-32deg for Q and U sources respectively. We obtain similar results to the PCCS2 for some sources, although we also find discrepancies in the 300-400 mJy flux density range with respect to the Planck catalogue. Based on these results, our model seems to be a promising tool to give estimations of the polarisation flux densities and angles of point sources above 80 mJy in any catalogue with practically null computational time., Comment: 9 pages, 9 Figures. In this work, we want to exploit the magnification bias of the SMGs using two different foreground samples, quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) and galaxies. Our aim is to study and compare their mass density profiles and estimate their masses and concentrations. The background SMG sample consists of objects observed by \textit{Herschel} with 1.2

The \textit{Herschel} Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey (H-ATLAS), that has covered about 642 sq. deg. in 5 bands from 100 to 500 $\mu\rm m$, allows a blind flux-limited selection of blazars at sub-mm wavelengths. However, blazars constitute a tiny fraction of H-ATLAS sources and therefore identifying them is not a trivial task. Using the data on known blazars detected by the H-ATLAS we have defined a locus for 500\,$\mu$m selected blazars and exploited it to select blazar candidates in the H-ATLAS fields. Candidates and known blazars in the H-ATLAS equatorial and South Galactic Pole fields were followed up with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) or with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA), and matched with existing radio- and mm-catalogues to reconstruct the spectral behaviour over at least 6 orders of magnitude in frequency. We identified a selection approach that, combining the information in the sub-mm and radio domains, efficiently singles out genuine blazars. In this way, we identified a sample of 39 blazars brighter than $S_{500\mu\rm m} = 35\,$mJy in the H-ATLAS fields. Tests made cross-matching the H-ATLAS catalogues with large catalogues of blazar candidates indicate that the sample is complete. Component separation is the process with which emission sources in astrophysical maps are generally extracted by taking multi-frequency information into account. It is crucial to develop more reliable methods for component separation for future CMB experiments. We aim to develop a new method based on fully convolutional neural networks called the Cosmic microwave background Extraction Neural Network (CENN) in order to extract the CMB signal in total intensity. The frequencies used are the Planck channels 143, 217 and 353 GHz. We validate the network at all sky, and at three latitude intervals: lat1=0^{\circ}

Aims. The main goal of this paper is to derive observational constraints on the halo mass fuction (HMF) by performing a tomographic analysis of the magnification bias signal on a sample of background submillimeter galaxies. The results can then be compared with those from a non-tomographic study. Methods. We measure the cross-correlation function between a sample of foreground GAMA galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts in the range $0.1 < z < 0.8$ (and divided up into four bins) and a sample of background submillimeter galaxies from H-ATLAS with photometric redshifts in the range $1.2 < z < 4.0$. We model the weak lensing signal within the halo model formalism and carry out a Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm to obtain the posterior distribution of all HMF parameters, which we assume to follow the Sheth and Tormen (ST) three-parameter and two-parameter fits. Results. While the observational constraints on the HMF from the non-tomographic analysis are not stringent, there is a remarkable improvement in terms of uncertainty reduction when tomography is adopted. Moreover, with respect to the traditional ST triple of values from numerical simulations, the results from the three-parameter fit predict a higher number density of halos at masses below $10^{12}M_{\odot}/h$ at 95% credibility. The two-parameter fit yields even more restricting results, with a larger number density of halos below $10^{13}M_{\odot}/h$ and a lower one above $10^{14}M_{\odot}/h$, this time at more than 3$\sigma$ credibility. Our results are therefore in disagreement with the standard N-body values for the ST fit at 2$\sigma$ and 3$\sigma$, respectively.

The high-z submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) can be used as background sample for gravitational lensing studies thanks to their magnification bias, which can manifest itself through a non-negligible measurement of the cross-correlation function between a background and a foreground source sample with non-overlapping redshift distributions. In particular, the choice of SMGs as background sample enhances the cross-correlation signal so as to provide an alternative and independent observable for cosmological studies regarding the probing of mass distribution. In particular the magnification bias can be exploited in order to constrain the free astrophysical parameters of a Halo Occupation Distribution model and some of the main cosmological parameters. In this work we want to study the average mass density profile of tens to hundreds of clusters of galaxies acting as lenses that produce a magnification bias on the SMGs, and to estimate their associated masses and concentrations for different richness ranges. The background sample is composed of SMGs observed by Herschel with 1.2

Point Source (PS) detection is an important issue for future Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) experiments since they are one of the main contaminants to the recovery of CMB signal at small scales. Improving its multifrequency detection would allow to take into account valuable information otherwise neglected when extracting PS using a channel-by-channel approach. We develop a method based on Neural Networks (NNs) to detect PS in multifrequency realistic simulations and compare its performance against one of the most popular methods, the matrix filters. The frequencies used are 143, 217 and 353 GHz and we impose a Galactic cut of 30 degrees. We produce simulations by adding contaminating signals to the PS maps as the CMB, the Cosmic Infrared Background, the Galactic thermal emission, the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect and the instrumental noise. These simulations are used to train two NNs called Flat and Spectral MultiPoSeIDoN. The first one considers PS with a flat spectrum and the second one is more realistic because it takes into account the spectral behavior of the PS. Using a detection limit of 60 mJy, Flat MultiPoSeIDoN reachs the 90% of completeness level at 58 mJy and at 79, 71 and 60 for the spectral case at 143, 217 and 353 GHz respectively, while the matrix filters reach it at 84, 79 and 123 mJy. Using safer 4{\sigma} detection limit does not help to improve these results. In all cases, MultiPoSeIDoN obtain a much lower number of spurious sources than the filter. The NNs recover the flux density of the detections with a relative error of 10% above 100 mJy, while the filter above 150 mJy. Based on the results, NNs are the perfect candidates to substitute filters to detect multifrequency PS in future CMB experiments. As in Gonzalez-Nuevo et al. 2017 and Bonavera et al. 2019, the high-z sub-millimetre galaxies can be used as background sample for gravitational lensing studies thanks to their magnification bias. In particular, as in Bonavera et al. 2020 the magnification bias can be exploited in order to constrain the free parameters of a Halo Occupation Distribution (HOD) model and some of the main cosmological parameters. In this work the magnification bias has been evaluated as cosmological tool in a tomographic set up. The cross-correlation function (CCF) data have been used to jointly constrain the astrophysical parameters $M_{min}$, $M_{1}$ and $\alpha$ in each one of the selected redshift bins and the $\Omega_{M}$, $\sigma_{8}$, and $H_0$ cosmological ones ($\Lambda$CDM). Moreover, we explore the possible time evolution of the dark energy density introducing also the $\omega_0, \omega_a$ parameters in the joint analysis ($\omega_0$CDM and $\omega_0\omega_a$CDM). The CCF has been measured between a foreground spectroscopic sample of GAMA galaxies that has been divided into four redshift bins (0.1-0.2, 0.2-0.3, 0.3-0.5 and 0.5-0.8) and a sample of H-ATLAS galaxies with photometric redshifts >1.2. The CCF is modelled using a description that depends on HOD and cosmological parameters that are estimated with MCMC in different cases. For the $\Lambda$CDM model, the analysis yields a maximum posterior value at 0.26 with $[0.17,0.41]$ 68\% C.I. for $\Omega_M$ and at 0.87 with $[0.75,1]$ 68\% C.I. for $\sigma_8$. With our current results $H_0$ is not yet constrained. With the $\omega_0$CDM model, the constraints on $\Omega_M$ and $\sigma_8$ are similar, but we found a maximum posterior value for $\omega_0$ at -1 with $[-1.56, -0.47]$ 68\% C.I. In the $\omega_0\omega_a$CDM model, the results are -1.09 with $[-1.72, -0.66]$ 68\% C.I. for $\omega_0$ and -0.19 with $[-1.88, 1.48]$ 68\% C.I. for $\omega_a$., Comment: accepted A&A

We present the first results of K2-OjOS, a collaborative project between professional and amateur astronomers primarily aimed to detect, characterize, and validate new extrasolar planets. For this work, 10 amateur astronomers looked for planetary signals by visually inspecting the 20 427 light curves of K2 campaign 18 (C18). They found 42 planet candidates, of which 18 are new detections and 24 had been detected in the overlapping C5 by previous works. We used archival photometric and spectroscopic observations, as well as new high-spatial resolution images in order to carry out a complete analysis of the candidates found, including a homogeneous characterization of the host stars, transit modelling, search for transit timing variations and statistical validation. As a result, we report four new planets (K2-355 b, K2-356 b, K2-357 b, and K2-358 b) and 14 planet candidates. Besides, we refine the transit ephemeris of the previously published planets and candidates by modelling C5, C16 (when available) and C18 photometric data jointly, largely improving the period and mid-transit time precision. Regarding individual systems, we highlight the new planet K2-356 b and candidate EPIC 211537087.02 being near a 2:1 period commensurability, the detection of significant TTVs in the bright star K2-184 (V = 10.35), the location of K2-103 b inside the habitable zone according to optimistic models, the detection of a new single transit in the known system K2-274, and the disposition reassignment of K2-120 b, which we consider as a planet candidate as the origin of the signal cannot be ascertained., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Aims. The main purpose of this work is to provide a method to derive tabulated observational constraints on the halo mass function (HMF) by studying the magnification bias effect on high-redshift submillimeter galaxies. Under the assumption of universality, we parametrize the HMF according to two traditional models, namely the Sheth and Tormen (ST) and Tinker fits and assess their performance in explaining the measured data within the {\Lambda} cold dark matter ({\Lambda}CDM) model. We also study the potential influence of the halo occupation distribution (HOD) parameters in this analysis and discuss two important aspects regarding the HMF parametrization. Methods. Core-collapse supernovae are among the most magnificent events in the observable universe. They produce many of the chemical elements necessary for life to exist and their remnants -- neutron stars and black holes -- are interesting astrophysical objects in their own right. However, despite millennia of observations and almost a century of astrophysical study, the explosion mechanism of core-collapse supernovae is not yet well understood. Hyper-Kamiokande is a next-generation neutrino detector that will be able to observe the neutrino flux from the next galactic core-collapse supernova in unprecedented detail. We focus on the first 500 ms of the neutrino burst, corresponding to the accretion phase, and use a newly-developed, high-precision supernova event generator to simulate Hyper-Kamiokande's response to five different supernova models. We show that Hyper-Kamiokande will be able to distinguish between these models with high accuracy for a supernova at a distance of up to 100 kpc. Once the next galactic supernova happens, this ability will be a powerful tool for guiding simulations towards a precise reproduction of the explosion mechanism observed in nature., Comment: 21 pages, 7 figures. Hyper-Kamiokande is the next generation underground water Cherenkov detector that builds on the highly successful Super-Kamiokande experiment. The detector which has an 8.4~times larger effective volume than its predecessor will be located along the T2K neutrino beamline and utilize an upgraded J-PARC beam with 2.6~times beam power. Hyper-K's low energy threshold combined with the very large fiducial volume make the detector unique, that is expected to acquire an unprecedented exposure of 3.8~Mton$\cdot$year over a period of 20~years of operation. Hyper-Kamiokande combines an extremely diverse science program including nucleon decays, long-baseline neutrino oscillations, atmospheric neutrinos, and neutrinos from astrophysical origins. The scientific scope of this program is highly complementary to liquid-argon detectors for example in sensitivity to nucleon decay channels or supernova detection modes. Hyper-Kamiokande construction has started in early 2020 and the experiment is expected to start operations in 2027. The Hyper-Kamiokande collaboration is presently being formed amongst groups from 19 countries including the United States, whose community has a long history of making significant contributions to the neutrino physics program in Japan. The study of the magnification bias produced on high-redshift sub-millimetre galaxies by foreground galaxies through the analysis of the cross-correlation function was recently demonstrated as an interesting independent alternative to the weak-lensing shear as a cosmological probe. In the case of the proposed observable, most of the cosmological constraints mainly depend on the largest angular separation measurements. Therefore, we aim to study and correct the main large-scale biases that affect foreground and background galaxy samples to produce a robust estimation of the cross-correlation function. Then we analyse the corrected signal to derive updated cosmological constraintsWe measured the large-scale, bias-corrected cross-correlation functions using a background sample of H-ATLAS galaxies with photometric redshifts > 1.2 and two different foreground samples (GAMA galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts or SDSS galaxies with photometric ones, both in the range 0.2 < z < 0.8). These measurements are modelled using the traditional halo model description that depends on both halo occupation distribution and cosmological parameters. We then estimated these parameters by performing a Markov chain Monte Carlo under multiple scenarios to study the performance of this observable and how to improve its results. After the large-scale bias corrections, we obtain only minor improvements with respect to the previous magnification bias results, mainly confirming their conclusions: a lower bound on $\Omega_m > 0.22$ at $95\%$ C.L. and an upper bound $\sigma_8 < 0.97$ at $95\%$ C.L. (results from the $z_{spec}$ sample). However, by combining both foreground samples into a simplified tomographic analysis, we were able to obtain interesting constraints on the $\Omega_m$-$\sigma_8$ plane as follows: $\Omega_m= 0.50_{- 0.20}^{+ 0.14}$ and $\sigma_8= 0.75_{- 0.10}^{+ 0.07}$ at 68\% CL., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures, accepted by A&A

We analyzed the photometry of 20038 cool stars from campaigns 12, 13, 14 and 15 of the K2 mission in order to detect, characterize and validate new planetary candidates transiting low-mass stars. We present a catalogue of 25 new periodic transit-like signals in 22 stars, of which we computed the parameters of the stellar host for 19 stars and the planetary parameters for 21 signals. We acquired speckle and AO images, and also inspected archival Pan-STARRS1 images and Gaia DR2 to discard the presence of close stellar companions and to check possible transit dilutions due to nearby stars. False positive probability (FPP) was computed for 22 signals, obtaining FPP < $1\%$ for 17. We consider 12 of them as statistically validated planets. One signal is a false positive and the remaining 12 signals are considered as planet candidates. 20 signals have orbital period P$_{\rm orb} < 10$ $d$, 2 have $10$ $d < $ P$_{\rm orb} < 20$ $d$ and 3 have P$_{\rm orb} > 20$ $d$. Regarding radii, 11 candidates and validated planets have computed radius R $<2 R_{\oplus}$, 9 have $2 R_{\oplus} <$ R $< 4 R_{\oplus}$, and 1 has R $>4 R_{\oplus}$. 2 validated planets and 2 candidates are located in moderately bright stars ($m_{kep}<13$) and 2 validated planets and 3 candidates have derived orbital radius within the habitable zone according to optimistic models. Of special interest is the validated warm super-Earth EPIC 248616368b (T$\rm_{eq} = 318^{+24}_{-43} \, K$, S$_{\rm p} = 1.7\pm 0.2 \, S_{\oplus}$, R$_{\rm p} = 2.1\pm 0.1 \, R_{\oplus} $), located in a m$\rm_{kep}$ = 14.13 star., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Context. As recently demonstrated, high-z submillimetre galaxies (SMGs) are the perfect background sample for tracing the mass density profiles of galaxies and clusters (baryonic and dark matter) and their time-evolution through gravitational lensing. Their magnification bias, a weak gravitational lensing effect, is a powerful tool for constraining the free parameters of a halo occupation distribution (HOD) model and potentially also some of the main cosmological parameters. Aims. The aim of this work is to test the capability of the magnification bias produced on high-z SMGs as a cosmological probe. We exploit cross-correlation data to constrain not only astrophysical parameters ($M_{min}$, $M_1$, and $\alpha$), but also some of the cosmological ones ($\Omega_m$, $\sigma_8$, and $H_0$) for this proof of concept. Methods. The measured cross-correlation function between a foreground sample of GAMA galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts in the range 0.2 < z < 0.8 and a background sample of H-ATLAS galaxies with photometric redshifts >1.2 is modelled using the traditional halo model description that depends on HOD and cosmological parameters. These parameters are then estimated by performing a Markov chain Monte Carlo analysis using different sets of priors to test the robustness of the results and to study the performance of this novel observable with the current set of data Results. With our current results, $\Omega_m$ and $H_0$ cannot be well constrained. However, we can set a lower limit of >0.24 at 95\% confidence level (CL) on $\Omega_m$ and we see a slight trend towards $H_0>70$ values. For our constraints on $\sigma_8$ we obtain only a tentative peak around 0.75, but an interesting upper limit of $\sigma_8\lesssim 1$ at 95\% CL. Point sources (PS) are one of the main contaminants to the recovery of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) signal at small scales, and their detection is important for the next generation of CMB experiments. We develop a method (PoSeIDoN) based on fully convolutional networks to detect PS in realistic simulations, and we compare its performance against one of the most used PS detection method, the Mexican hat wavelet 2 (MHW2). We produce realistic simulations of PS taking into account contaminating signals as the CMB, the cosmic infrared background, the Galactic thermal emission, the thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect, and the instrumental and PS shot noises. We first produce a set of training simulations at 217 GHz to train the network. Then we apply both PoSeIDoN and the MHW2 to recover the PS in the validating simulations at all 143, 217, and 353 GHz, comparing the results by estimating the reliability, completeness, and flux density accuracy and by computing the receiver operating characteristic curves. In the extra-galactic region with a 30{\deg} galactic cut, the network successfully recovers PS at 90% completeness corresponding to 253, 126, and 250 mJy for 143, 217, and 353 GHz respectively. The MHW2 with a 3$\sigma$ flux density detection limit recovers PS up to 181, 102, and 153 mJy at 90% completeness. In all cases PoSeIDoN produces a much lower number of spurious sources with respect to MHW2. The results on spurious sources for both techniques worsen when reducing the galactic cut to 10{\deg}. Our results suggest that using neural networks is a very promising approach for detecting PS, providing overall better results in dealing with spurious sources with respect to usual filtering approaches. Planck, SPT and ACT surveys have clearly demonstrated that Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) experiments, while optimised for cosmological measurements, have made important contributions to the field of extragalactic astrophysics in the last decade. Future CMB experiments have the potential to make even greater contributions. One example is the detection of high-z galaxies with extreme gravitational amplifications. The combination of flux boosting and of stretching of the images has allowed the investigation of the structure of galaxies at z ~3 with the astounding spatial resolution of about 60 pc. Another example is the detection of proto-clusters of dusty galaxies at high z when they may not yet possess the hot intergalactic medium allowing their detection in X-rays or via the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect. Next generation CMB experiments, like PICO, CORE, CMB-Bharat from space and Simons Observatory and CMB-S4 from the ground, will discover several thousands of strongly lensed galaxies out to z~6 or more and of galaxy proto-clusters caught in the phase when their member galaxies where forming the bulk of their {stars. They will also detect tens of thousands of local dusty galaxies and thousands of radio sources at least up to z~5. The statistical analysis of large sample of strong lensing events can be a powerful tool to extract astrophysical and/or cosmological valuable information. However, the number of such events is still relatively low, mostly because of the lengthily observational validation process on individual events. In this work we propose a new methodology with a statistical selection approach in order to increase by a factor of $\sim 5$ the number of such events. Although the methodology can be applied to address several selection problems, it has particular benefits in the case of the identification of strongly lensed galaxies: objectivity, minimal initial constrains in the main parameter space, preservation of the statistical properties. The proposed methodology is based on the Bhattacharyya distance as a measure of the similarity between probability distributions of properties of two different cross-matched galaxies. The particular implementation for the aim of this work is called SHALOS and it combines the information of four different properties of the pair of galaxies: angular separation, luminosity percentile, redshift and optical/sub-mm flux density ratio. The SHALOS method provided a ranked list of strongly lensed galaxies. The number of candidates for the final associated probability, $P_{tot}>0.7$, is 447 with an estimated mean amplification factor of 3.12 for an halo with a typical cluster mass. Additional statistical properties of the SHALOS candidates, as the correlation function or the source number counts, are in agreement with previous results indicating the statistical lensing nature of the selected sample., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Astronomy & Astrophysics

Magnification bias is a gravitational lensing effect that is normally overlooked because it is considered sub-optimal in comparison with the lensing shear. Thanks to the demonstrated optimal characteristics of the sub-millimetre galaxies (SMGs) for lensing analysis, in this work we were able to measure the magnification bias produced by a sample of QSOs acting as lenses, $0.2 13.6_{-0.4}^{+0.9}$, also confirmed by the mass density profile analysis ($M_{200c}\sim 10^{14} M_\odot$). These mass values indicate that we are observing the lensing effect of a cluster size halo signposted by the QSOs, as in previous studies of the magnification bias. Moreover, we were able to estimate the lensing convergence, $\kappa(\theta)$, for our magnification bias measurements down to a few kpcs. The derived mass density profile is in good agreement with a Navarro-Frank-White (NFW) profile. We also attempt an estimation of the halo mass and the concentration parameters, obtaining $M_{NFW}=1.0^{+0.4}_{-0.2}\times10^{14} M_\odot$ and $C=3.5_{-0.3}^{+0.5}$. This concentration value is rather low and it would indicate that the cluster halos around these QSOs are unrelaxed. We present a new catalogue of ALMA observations of 3,364 bright, compact radio sources, mostly blazars, used as calibrators. These sources were observed between May 2011 and July 2018, for a total of 47,115 pointings in different bands and epochs. We have exploited the ALMA data to validate the photometry given in the new Planck Multi-frequency Catalogue of Non-thermal sources (PCNT), for which an external validation was not possible so far. We have also assessed the positional accuracy of Planck catalogues and the PCNT completeness limits, finding them to be consistent with those of the Second Planck Catalogue of Compact Sources. The ALMA continuum spectra have allowed us to extrapolate the observed radio source counts at 100 GHz to the effective frequencies of ALMA bands 4, 6, 7, 8 and 9 (145, 233, 285, 467 and 673 GHz, respectively), where direct measurements are scanty, especially at the 3 highest frequencies. We present a super-Earth orbiting close to the inner edge of the habitable zone of the cool dwarf star K2-286 (EPIC 249889081), detected with data from the K2 mission in its $15^{th}$ campaign. The planet has radius of $2.1\pm0.2$ R$_{\oplus}$, near the 1.5 - 2.0 R$_{\oplus}$ gap in the radii distribution. The equilibrium temperature is $347^{+21}_{-11}$ K, cooler than most of the small planets with well measured masses, and the orbital period is $27.359\pm0.005$ days. K2-286, located at a distance of $76.3\pm0.3$ pc, is an M0V star with estimated effective temperature of $3926\pm100$ K, less active than other M dwarf stars hosting exoplanets. The expected radial velocity semi-amplitude induced by the planet on the star is $1.9^{+1.3}_{-1.2}$ m$\cdot$s$^{-1}$, and the amplitude of signals in transit transmission spectroscopy is estimated at $5.0\pm3.0$ ppm. Follow-up observations for mass measurements and transit spectroscopy should be desirable for this relatively bright target ($m_V=12.76, m_{Ks}=9.32$) hosting a transiting super-Earth within the inner edge of the habitable zone., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present a new catalog of high-redshift candidate \textit{Herschel} sources. Our sample is obtained after applying a multifrequency filtering method ("matched multifilter"), which is designed to improve the signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) of faint extragalactic point sources. The method is tested against already-detected sources from the \textit{Herschel} Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey (H-ATLAS) and used to search for new high-redshift candidates. The multifilter technique also produces an estimation of the photometric redshift of the sources. When compared with a sample of sources with known spectroscopic redshift, the photometric redshift returned from the multifilter is unbiased in the redshift range 0.8 < z < 4.3. Using simulated data we reproduced the same unbiased result in roughly the same redshift range and determined the error (and bias above $z\approx4$) in the photometric redshifts. Based on the multifilter technique, and a selection based on color, flux, and agreement of fit between the observed photometry and assumed SED, we find 370 robust candidates to be relatively bright high-redshift sources. A second sample with 237 objects focuses on the faint end at high-redshift. These 237 sources were previously near the H-ATLAS detection limit but are now confirmed with our technique as high significance detections. Finally, we look for possible lensed Herschel sources by cross-correlating the first sample of 370 objects with two different catalogs of known low-redshift objects, the redMaPPer Galaxy Cluster Catalog and a catalog of galaxies with spectroscopic redshift from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 14. Our search renders a number of candidates to be lensed systems from the SDSS cross-correlation but none from the redMaPPeR confirming the more likely galactic nature of the lenses.

We present a final description of the data-processing pipeline for the Planck, Low Frequency Instrument (LFI), implemented for the 2018 data release. Several improvements have been made with respect to the previous release, especially in the calibration process and in the correction of instrumental features such as the effects of nonlinearity in the response of the analogue-to-digital converters. We provide a brief pedagogical introduction to the complete pipeline, as well as a detailed description of the important changes implemented. Self-consistency of the pipeline is demonstrated using dedicated simulations and null tests. We present the final version of the LFI full sky maps at 30, 44, and 70 GHz, both in temperature and polarization, together with a refined estimate of the Solar dipole and a final assessment of the main LFI instrumental parameters.

This paper presents the Planck Multi-frequency Catalogue of Non-thermal (i.e. synchrotron-dominated) Sources (PCNT) observed between 30 and 857 GHz by the ESA Planck mission. This catalogue was constructed by selecting objects detected in the full mission all-sky temperature maps at 30 and 143 GHz, with a signal-to-noise ratio (S/N)>3 in at least one of the two channels after filtering with a particular Mexican hat wavelet. As a result, 29400 source candidates were selected. Then, a multi-frequency analysis was performed using the Matrix Filters methodology at the position of these objects, and flux densities and errors were calculated for all of them in the nine Planck channels. The present catalogue is the first unbiased, full-sky catalogue of synchrotron-dominated sources published at millimetre and submillimetre wavelengths and constitutes a powerful database for statistical studies of non-thermal extragalactic sources, whose emission is dominated by the central active galactic nucleus. Together with the full multi-frequency catalogue, we also define the Bright Planck Multi-frequency Catalogue of Non-thermal Sources PCNTb, where only those objects with a S/N>4 at both 30 and 143 GHz were selected. In this catalogue 1146 compact sources are detected outside the adopted Planck GAL070 mask; thus, these sources constitute a highly reliable sample of extragalactic radio sources. We also flag the high-significance subsample PCNThs, a subset of 151 sources that are detected with S/N>4 in all nine Planck channels, 75 of which are found outside the Planck mask adopted here. We combine the latest datasets obtained with different surveys to study the frequency dependence of polarized emission coming from Extragalactic Radio Sources (ERS). We consider data over a very wide frequency range starting from $1.4$ GHz up to $217$ GHz. This range is particularly interesting since it overlaps the frequencies of the current and forthcoming Cosmic Microwave Background (\cmb) experiments. Current data suggest that at high radio frequencies, ($ \nu \geq 20$ GHz) the fractional polarization of ERS does not depend on the total flux density. Conversely, recent datasets indicate a moderate increase of polarization fraction as a function of frequency, physically motivated by the fact that Faraday depolarization is expected to be less relevant at high radio-frequencies. We compute ERS number counts using updated models based on recent data, and we forecast the contribution of unresolved ERS in CMB polarization spectra. Given the expected sensitivities and the observational patch sizes of forthcoming \cmb\ experiments about $\sim 200 $ ( up to $\sim 2000 $ ) polarized ERS are expected to be detected. Finally, we assess that polarized ERS can contaminate the cosmological B-mode polarization if the tensor-to-scalar ratio is $r< 0.05$ and they have to be robustly controlled to de-lens \cmb\ B-modes at the arcminute angular scales., Comment: 14 pages, 14 figures, 6 tables; AAS received 26th December,2017

In this work we measure and study the cross-correlation signal between a foreground sample of GAMA galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts in the range $0.2

We estimate the average fractional polarisation at 143, 217 and 353 GHz of a sample of 4697 extragalactic dusty sources by applying stacking technique. The sample is selected from the second version of the Planck Catalogue of Compact Sources at 857 GHz, avoiding the region inside the Planck Galactic mask (fsky ~ 60 per cent). We recover values for the mean fractional polarisation at 217 and 353 GHz of (3.10 \pm 0.75) per cent and (3.65 \pm 0.66) per cent, respectively, whereas at 143 GHz we give a tentative value of (3.52 \pm 2.48) per cent. We discuss the possible origin of the measured polarisation, comparing our new estimates with those previously obtained from a sample of radio sources. We test different distribution functions and we conclude that the fractional polarisation of dusty sources is well described by a log-normal distribution, as determined in the radio band studies. For this distribution we estimate {\mu}_{217GHz} = 0.3 \pm 0.5 (that would correspond to a median fractional polarisation of {\Pi}_{med} = (1.3 \pm 0.7) per cent) and {\mu}_{353GHz} = 0.7 \pm 0.4 ({\Pi}_{med} = (2.0 \pm 0.8) per cent), {\sigma}_{217GHz} = 1.3 \pm 0.2 and {\sigma}_{353GHz} = 1.1 \pm 0.2. With these values we estimate the source number counts in polarisation and the contribution given by these sources to the CMB B-mode angular power spectrum at 217, 353, 600 and 800 GHz. Measurements of flux density are described for five planets, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, across the six Planck High Frequency Instrument frequency bands (100-857 GHz) and these are then compared with models and existing data. In our analysis, we have also included estimates of the brightness of Jupiter and Saturn at the three frequencies of the Planck Low Frequency Instrument (30, 44, and 70 GHz). The results provide constraints on the intrinsic brightness and the brightness time-variability of these planets. The majority of the planet flux density estimates are limited by systematic errors, but still yield better than 1% measurements in many cases. Applying data from Planck HFI, the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP), and the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT) to a model that incorporates contributions from Saturn's rings to the planet's total flux density suggests a best fit value for the spectral index of Saturn's ring system of $\beta _\mathrm{ring} = 2.30\pm0.03$ over the 30-1000 GHz frequency range. The average ratio between the Planck-HFI measurements and the adopted model predictions for all five planets (excluding Jupiter observations for 353 GHz) is 0.997, 0.997, 1.018, and 1.032 for 100, 143, 217, and 353 GHz, respectively. Model predictions for planet thermodynamic temperatures are therefore consistent with the absolute calibration of Planck-HFI detectors at about the three-percent-level. We compare our measurements with published results from recent cosmic microwave background experiments. In particular, we observe that the flux densities measured by Planck HFI and WMAP agree to within 2%. We present high sensitivity polarimetric observations in 6 bands covering the 5.5-38 GHz range of a complete sample of 53 compact extragalactic radio sources brighter than 200 mJy at 20 GHz. The observations, carried out with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), achieved a 91% detection rate (at 5 sigma). Within this frequency range the spectra of about 95% of sources are well fitted by double power laws, both in total intensity and in polarisation, but the spectral shapes are generally different in the two cases. Most sources were classified as either steep- or peaked-spectrum but less than 50% have the same classification in total and in polarised intensity. No significant trends of the polarisation degree with flux density or with frequency were found. The mean variability index in total intensity of steep-spectrum sources increases with frequency for a 4-5 year lag, while no significant trend shows up for the other sources and for the 8 year lag. In polarisation, the variability index, that could be computed only for the 8 year lag, is substantially higher than in total intensity and has no significant frequency dependence., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The six parameters of the standard $\Lambda$CDM model have best-fit values derived from the Planck temperature power spectrum that are shifted somewhat from the best-fit values derived from WMAP data. These shifts are driven by features in the Planck temperature power spectrum at angular scales that had never before been measured to cosmic-variance level precision. We investigate these shifts to determine whether they are within the range of expectation and to understand their origin in the data. Taking our parameter set to be the optical depth of the reionized intergalactic medium $\tau$, the baryon density $\omega_{\rm b}$, the matter density $\omega_{\rm m}$, the angular size of the sound horizon $\theta_*$, the spectral index of the primordial power spectrum, $n_{\rm s}$, and $A_{\rm s}e^{-2\tau}$ (where $A_{\rm s}$ is the amplitude of the primordial power spectrum), we examine the change in best-fit values between a WMAP-like large angular-scale data set (with multipole moment $\ell<800$ in the Planck temperature power spectrum) and an all angular-scale data set ($\ell<2500$ Planck temperature power spectrum), each with a prior on $\tau$ of $0.07\pm0.02$. We find that the shifts, in units of the 1$\sigma$ expected dispersion for each parameter, are $\{\Delta \tau, \Delta A_{\rm s} e^{-2\tau}, \Delta n_{\rm s}, \Delta \omega_{\rm m}, \Delta \omega_{\rm b}, \Delta \theta_*\} = \{-1.7, -2.2, 1.2, -2.0, 1.1, 0.9\}$, with a $\chi^2$ value of 8.0. We find that this $\chi^2$ value is exceeded in 15% of our simulated data sets, and that a parameter deviates by more than 2.2$\sigma$ in 9% of simulated data sets, meaning that the shifts are not unusually large. Comparing $\ell<800$ instead to $\ell>800$, or splitting at a different multipole, yields similar results. The characterization of the Galactic foregrounds has been shown to be the main obstacle in the challenging quest to detect primordial B-modes in the polarized microwave sky. We make use of the Planck-HFI 2015 data release at high frequencies to place new constraints on the properties of the polarized thermal dust emission at high Galactic latitudes. Here, we specifically study the spatial variability of the dust polarized spectral energy distribution, and its potential impact on the determination of the tensor-to-scalar ratio. We use the correlation ratio of the $C_\ell^{BB}$ angular power spectra between the 217- and 353-GHz channels as a tracer of these potential variations, computed on different high Galactic latitude regions, ranging from 80% to 20% of the sky. The new insight from Planck data is a departure of the correlation ratio from unity that cannot be attributed to a spurious decorrelation due to the cosmic microwave background, instrumental noise, or instrumental systematics. The effect is marginally detected on each region, but the statistical combination of all the regions gives more than 99% confidence for this variation in polarized dust properties. In addition, we show that the decorrelation increases when there is a decrease in the mean column density of the region of the sky being considered, and we propose a simple power-law empirical model for this dependence, which matches what is seen in the Planck data. We explore the effect that this measured decorrelation has on simulations of the BICEP2-Keck Array/Planck analysis and show that the 2015 constraints from those data still allow a decorrelation between the dust at 150 and 353GHz of the order of the one we measure. Finally we show that either spatial variation of the dust SED or of the dust polarization angle could produce decorrelations between 217- and 353-GHz data similar to those we observe in the data.

Continuum spectra covering centimetre to submillimetre wavelengths are presented for a northern sample of 104 extragalactic radio sources, mainly active galactic nuclei, based on four-epoch Planck data. The nine Planck frequencies, from 30 to 857 GHz, are complemented by a set of simultaneous ground-based radio observations between 1.1 and 37 GHz. The single-survey Planck data confirm that the flattest high-frequency radio spectral indices are close to zero, indicating that the original accelerated electron energy spectrum is much harder than commonly thought, with power-law index around 1.5 instead of the canonical 2.5. The radio spectra peak at high frequencies and exhibit a variety of shapes. For a small set of low-z sources, we find a spectral upturn at high frequencies, indicating the presence of intrinsic cold dust. Variability can generally be approximated by achromatic variations, while sources with clear signatures of evolving shocks appear to be limited to the strongest outbursts., Comment: 39 pages, 113 figures. Using the Planck 2015 data release (PR2) temperature maps, we separate Galactic thermal dust emission from cosmic infrared background (CIB) anisotropies. For this purpose, we implement a specifically tailored component-separation method, the so-called generalized needlet internal linear combination (GNILC) method, which uses spatial information (the angular power spectra) to disentangle the Galactic dust emission and CIB anisotropies. We produce significantly improved all-sky maps of Planck thermal dust emission, with reduced CIB contamination, at 353, 545, and 857 GHz. By reducing the CIB contamination of the thermal dust maps, we provide more accurate estimates of the local dust temperature and dust spectral index over the sky with reduced dispersion, especially at high Galactic latitudes above $b = \pm 20{\deg}$. We find that the dust temperature is $T = (19.4 \pm 1.3)$ K and the dust spectral index is $\beta = 1.6 \pm 0.1$ averaged over the whole sky, while $T = (19.4 \pm 1.5)$ K and $\beta = 1.6 \pm 0.2$ on 21 % of the sky at high latitudes. Moreover, subtracting the new CIB-removed thermal dust maps from the CMB-removed Planck maps gives access to the CIB anisotropies over 60 % of the sky at Galactic latitudes $|b| > 20{\deg}$. Because they are a significant improvement over previous Planck products, the GNILC maps are recommended for thermal dust science. The new CIB maps can be regarded as indirect tracers of the dark matter and they are recommended for exploring cross-correlations with lensing and large-scale structure optical surveys. Parity violating extensions of the standard electromagnetic theory cause in vacuo rotation of the plane of polarization of propagating photons. This effect, also known as cosmic birefringence, impacts the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy angular power spectra, producing non-vanishing $T$--$B$ and $E$--$B$ correlations that are otherwise null when parity is a symmetry. Here we present new constraints on an isotropic rotation, parametrized by the angle $\alpha$, derived from Planck 2015 CMB polarization data. To increase the robustness of our analyses, we employ two complementary approaches, in harmonic space and in map space, the latter based on a peak stacking technique. The two approaches provide estimates for $\alpha$ that are in agreement within statistical uncertainties and very stable against several consistency tests. Considering the $T$--$B$ and $E$--$B$ information jointly, we find $\alpha = 0.31^{\circ} \pm 0.05^{\circ} \, ({\rm stat.})\, \pm 0.28^{\circ} \, ({\rm syst.})$ from the harmonic analysis and $\alpha = 0.35^{\circ} \pm 0.05^{\circ} \, ({\rm stat.})\, \pm 0.28^{\circ} \, ({\rm syst.})$ from the stacking approach. These constraints are compatible with no parity violation and are dominated by the systematic uncertainty in the orientation of Planck's polarization-sensitive bolometers., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures. We investigate constraints on cosmic reionization extracted from the Planck cosmic microwave background (CMB) data. We combine the Planck CMB anisotropy data in temperature with the low-multipole polarization data to fit LCDM models with various parameterizations of the reionization history. We obtain a Thomson optical depth tau=0.058 +/- 0.012 for the commonly adopted instantaneous reionization model. This confirms, with only data from CMB anisotropies, the low value suggested by combining Planck 2015 results with other data sets and also reduces the uncertainties. We reconstruct the history of the ionization fraction using either a symmetric or an asymmetric model for the transition between the neutral and ionized phases. To determine better constraints on the duration of the reionization process, we also make use of measurements of the amplitude of the kinetic Sunyaev-Zeldovich (kSZ) effect using additional information from the high resolution Atacama Cosmology Telescope and South Pole Telescope experiments. The average redshift at which reionization occurs is found to lie between z=7.8 and 8.8, depending on the model of reionization adopted. Using kSZ constraints and a redshift-symmetric reionization model, we find an upper limit to the width of the reionization period of Dz < 2.8. In all cases, we find that the Universe is ionized at less than the 10% level at redshifts above z~10. This suggests that an early onset of reionization is strongly disfavoured by the Planck data. This paper describes the identification, modelling, and removal of previously unexplained systematic effects in the polarization data of the Planck High Frequency Instrument (HFI) on large angular scales, including new mapmaking and calibration procedures, new and more complete end-to-end simulations, and a set of robust internal consistency checks on the resulting maps. These maps, at 100, 143, 217, and 353 GHz, are early versions of those that will be released in final form later in 2016. The improvements allow us to determine the cosmic reionization optical depth $\tau$ using, for the first time, the low-multipole $EE$ data from HFI, reducing significantly the central value and uncertainty, and hence the upper limit. Two different likelihood procedures are used to constrain $\tau$ from two estimators of the CMB $E$- and $B$-mode angular power spectra at 100 and 143 GHz, after debiasing the spectra from a small remaining systematic contamination. These all give fully consistent results. A further consistency test is performed using cross-correlations derived from the Low Frequency Instrument maps of the Planck 2015 data release and the new HFI data. For this purpose, end-to-end analyses of systematic effects from the two instruments are used to demonstrate the near independence of their dominant systematic error residuals. The tightest result comes from the HFI-based $\tau$ posterior distribution using the maximum likelihood power spectrum estimator from $EE$ data only, giving a value $0.055\pm 0.009$.
