Search

The Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS) is a project to map $\sim9300$ sq deg of the sky using twelve bands (seven narrow and five broadbands). Observations are performed with the T80-South telescope, a robotic telescope located at the Cerro Tololo Observatory in Chile. The survey footprint consists of several large contiguous areas, including fields at high and low galactic latitudes, and towards the Magellanic Clouds. S-PLUS uses fixed exposure times to reach point source depths of about $21$ mag in the $griz$ and $20$ mag in the $u$ and the narrow filters. This paper describes the S-PLUS Data Release 4 (DR4), which includes calibrated images and derived catalogues for over 3000 sq deg, covering the aforementioned area. The catalogues provide multi-band photometry performed with the tools \texttt{DoPHOT} and \texttt{SExtractor} -- point spread function (\PSF) and aperture photometry, respectively. In addition to the characterization, we also present the scientific potential of the data. We use statistical tools to present and compare the photometry obtained through different methods. Overall we find good agreement between the different methods, with a slight systematic offset of 0.05\,mag between our \PSF and aperture photometry. We show that the astrometry accuracy is equivalent to that obtained in previous S-PLUS data releases, even in very crowded fields where photometric extraction is challenging. The depths of main survey (MS) photometry for a minimum signal-to-noise ratio $S/N = 3$ reach from $\sim19.5$ for the bluer bands to $\sim21.5$ mag on the red. The range of magnitudes over which accurate \PSF photometry is obtained is shallower, reaching $\sim19$ to $\sim20.5$ mag depending on the filter. We derive astrophysical parameters of the open cluster NGC 1513 by means of colour indices built with new $CCD\,UBV(RI)_{KC}$ photometry. Based on early-type members, the mean foreground reddening and total to selective extinction ratio are E(B-V)=0.79$\pm$0.09 mag and $R_{V}$=2.85$\pm$0.05. Through the differential grid method, we derive the metal abundance [Fe/H]=-0.06 dex (Z=+0.013), which is consistent with the value [Fe/H]=-0.088 of the bright giant member-LAMOST-695710060. The Z=+0.013 isochrone fit to the V x (B-V) colour-magnitude diagram leads to a turn-off age of 224$\pm$27 Myr (thus an intermediate-age cluster), and a distance modulus of ($V_{0}$ - $M_{\rm V}$)=10.90$\pm$0.15 mag, thus implying a distance from the Sun d=1514$\pm$105 pc. Within the uncertainties, our photometric distance is consistent with the value d=1435$\pm$14 pc from the Gaia DR3 parallax. We find signs of small mass segregation through a minimum spanning tree analysis for the 190 most massive stars, together with the rather steep mass function ($\chi$=+2.39) slope. The high core to half-light radius ratio $R_{core}$/$R_{h}$=0.82, together with the compact half-light to tidal radius ratio $R_{h}$/$R_{t}$=0.22, suggest that it is probably related to cluster-formation effects, due to little dynamical evolution, instead of driving its dynamical evolution by internal relaxation. Indeed, NGC 1513 is located in the second quadrant ($\ell$=152.59$^{\circ}$ and Galactocentric distance $R_{GC}$=9.57 kpc), which tends to minimize tidal effects by external processes and tidal disruption. Therefore, internal mass segregation effects in NGC 1513 seem to be more efficient than cluster evaporation processes. We fit various colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of the Galactic globular clusters NGC\,6397 and NGC\,6809 (M55) by isochrones from the Dartmouth Stellar Evolution Database (DSED) and Bag of Stellar Tracks and Isochrones (BaSTI) for $\alpha$-enhanced [$\alpha$/Fe]$=+0.4$. For the CMDs, we use data sets from {\it HST}, {\it Gaia}, VISTA, and other sources utilizing 32 and 23 photometric filters for NGC\,6397 and NGC\,6809, respectively, from the ultraviolet to mid-infrared. We obtain the following characteristics for NGC\,6397 and NGC\,6809, respectively: metallicities [Fe/H]$=-1.84\pm0.02\pm0.1$ and $-1.78\pm0.02\pm0.1$ (statistic and systematic uncertainties); distances $2.45\pm0.02\pm0.06$ and $5.24\pm0.02\pm0.18$ kpc; ages $12.9\pm0.1\pm0.8$ and $13.0\pm0.1\pm0.8$ Gyr; reddenings $E(B-V)=0.178\pm0.006\pm0.01$ and $0.118\pm0.004\pm0.01$ mag; extinctions $A_\mathrm{V}=0.59\pm0.01\pm0.02$ and $0.37\pm0.01\pm0.04$ mag; extinction-to-reddening ratio $R_\mathrm{V}=3.32^{+0.32}_{-0.28}$ and $3.16^{+0.66}_{-0.56}$. Our estimates agree with most estimates from the literature. BaSTI gives systematically higher [Fe/H] and lower reddenings than DSED. Despite nearly the same metallicity, age, and helium enrichment, these clusters show a considerable horizontal branch (HB) morphology difference, which must therefore be described by another parameter. This parameter must predominantly explain why the least massive HB stars (0.58-0.63 solar masses) are only found within NGC 6809. Probably they have been lost by the core-collapse cluster NGC\,6397 during its dynamical evolution and mass segregation. The Vera C. Rubin Observatory will undertake the Legacy Survey of Space and Time, providing an unprecedented, volume-limited catalog of star clusters in the Southern Sky, including Galactic and extragalactic star clusters. The Star Clusters subgroup of the Stars, Milky Way and Local Volume Working Group has identified key areas where Rubin Observatory will enable significant progress in star cluster research. This roadmap represents our science cases and preparation for studies of all kinds of star clusters from the Milky Way out to distances of tens of megaparsecs., Comment: accepted to PASP

We present a detailed study of NGC 6791, NGC 6811, NGC 6819 and NGC 6866, the four open clusters that are located in the Kepler prime field. We use new CCD UBV(RI)KC photometry, which was combined with Gaia EDR3 photometric/astrometric data, to derive the astrophysical parameters with two independent methods - one of them the fitCMD algorithm. Furthermore, we provide among others estimates of the mass and mass function, the cluster structure, derive the cluster orbits, and discuss the cluster dynamics. All objects belong to the older open cluster population (1-7Gyr), are in an advanced dynamical stage with signs of mass segregation, and are located close to the solar circle, but show a large range in respect of radii, member stars or observed cluster mass (100-2000 Msolar). For the three younger objects we were also able to provide photometric metallicity estimates, which confirms their status as clusters with a roughly solar metallicity. The most outstanding object is clearly NGC 6791, a very old cluster with a high metallicity at a distance of about 4.5 kpc from the Sun. We estimate a probable radial migration by about 7 kpc, resulting in a birth position close to the Galactic center., Comment: 18 pages, 15 figures and 10 tables. The presence of Multiple Stellar Populations (MSPs) in Galactic Globular Clusters (GCs) is a poorly understood phenomenon. By probing different spectral ranges that are affected by different absorption lines using the multi-band photometric survey S-PLUS, we study four GCs -- NGC 104, NGC 288, NGC 3201 and NGC 7089 -- that span a wide range in metallicities. With the combination of broad and narrow-band photometry in 12 different filters from 3485A (u) to 9114A (z), we identified MSPs along the rectified red-giant branch in colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) and separated them using a K-means clustering algorithm. Additionally, we take advantage of the large Field of View of the S-PLUS detector to investigate radial trends in our sample. We report on six colour combinations that can be used to successfully identify two stellar populations in all studied clusters and show that they can be characterized as Na-rich and Na-poor. For both NGC 288 and NGC 7089, their radial profiles show a clear concentration of 2P. This directly supports the formation theories that propose an enrichment of the intra-cluster medium and subsequent star formation in the more dense central regions. However, in the case of NGC 3201, the trend is reversed. The 1P is more centrally concentrated, in direct contradiction with previous literature studies. NGC 104 shows a well-mixed population. We also constructed radial profiles up to 1 half-light radius of the clusters with HST data to highlight that radial differences are lost in the inner regions of the GCs and that wide-field studies are essential when studying this., Comment: 9 pages, 11 figures

We determined astrophysical and dynamical parameters of the open clusters (OCs) NGC 2587, Collinder 268 (Col 268), Melotte 72 (Mel 72), and Pismis 7 from Gaia DR2 photometric/astrometric data and a new technique, fitCMD. fitCMD provides (Z, Age(Gyr)) as (0.025, 0.45) for NGC 2587, (0.0025, 0.5) for Col. 268, (0.011, 1.25) for Mel 72, and (0.008, 1.00) for Pismis 7, respectively. As compared to Gaia DR2 distances, the obtained photometric distances from fitCMD provide somewhat close distances. For NGC 2587 and Mel 72, both distances are in good concordance. Except for NGC 2587, the ages of the remaining OCs are higher than their relaxation times, which suggests that they are dynamically relaxed. NGC 2587 did not undergo dynamical evolution. Mel 72 and Pismis 7 with relatively flat MF slopes indicate signs of a somewhat advanced dynamical evolution, in the sense that they appear to have lost a significant fraction of their low-mass stars to the field. Pismis 7's negative/flat MFs indicates that its high mass stars slightly outnumber its low mass ones. Given its mild dynamical evolution, the high mass stars move towards the central region, while low-mass stars are continually being lost to the field. Col 268 presents small dimensions which suggest a primordial origin. The outer parts of Mel 72 and Pismis 7 - with large cluster radii expand with time, while Mel 72's core contracts because of dynamical relaxation (Figs. 10e--f)., Comment: 12 pages, 21 figures and 7 tables. We analyse the globular cluster (GC) systems of a sample of 15 massive, compact early-type galaxies (ETGs), 13 of which have already been identified as good relic galaxy candidates on the basis of their compact morphologies, old stellar populations and stellar kinematics. These relic galaxy candidates are likely the nearby counterparts of high redshift red nugget galaxies. Using F814W (~I) and F160W (~H) data from the WFC3 camara onboard the Hubble Space Telescope we determine the total number, luminosity function, specific frequency, colour and spatial distribution of the GC systems. We find lower specific frequencies (SN<2.5 with a median of SN=1) than ETGs of comparable mass. This is consistent with a scenario of rapid, early dissipative formation, with relatively low levels of accretion of low-mass, high-SN satellites. The GC half-number radii are compact, but follow the relations found in normal ETGs. We identify an anticorrelation between the specific angular momentum (lambda_R) of the host galaxy and the (I-H) colour distribution width of their GC systems. Assuming that lambda_R provides a measure of the degree of dissipation in massive ETGs, we suggest that the (I-H) colour distribution width can be used as a proxy for the degree of complexity of the accretion histories in these systems., Comment: MNRAS accepted

This work employs high-quality {\em Hubble Space Telescope} ({\em HST}) Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) F606W and F814W photometry to correct for the differential reddening affecting the colour-magnitude diagram (CMD) of the poorly-studied globular cluster (GC) Palomar\,2. Differential reddening is taken into account by assuming that morphological differences among CMDs extracted across the field of view of Palomar\,2 correspond essentially to shifts (quantified in terms of $\delta E(B-V)$) along the reddening vector due to a non-uniform dust distribution. The average reddening difference over all partial CMDs is $\overline{\delta E(B-V)}=0.24\pm0.08$, with the highest reaching $\delta E(B-V) =0.52$. The corrected CMD displays well-defined and relatively narrow evolutionary sequences, especially for the evolved stars, i.e. the red-giant, horizontal and asymptotic giant branches (RGB, HB and AGB, respectively). The average width of the upper main sequence and RGB profiles of the corrected CMD corresponds to 56\% of the original one. Parameters measured on this CMD show that Palomar\,2 is $\approx13.25$\,Gyr old, has the mass $M\sim1.4\times10^5\,m_\odot$ stored in stars, is affected by the foreground $E(B-V)\approx0.93$, is located at $d_\odot\approx26$\,Kpc from the Sun, and is characterized by the global metallicity $Z/Zo\approx0.03$, which corresponds to the range $-1.9\leq [Fe/H] \leq-1.6$ (for $0.0\leq[\alpha/Fe]\leq+0.4$), quite consistent with other outer halo GCs. We made use of the Gaia DR2 archive to comprehensively study the Milky Way open cluster Collinder 347, known until now as a very young object of solar metal-content. However, the G versus G_BP-G_RP colour-magnitude diagram (CMD) of bonafide probable cluster members, selected on the basis of individual stellar proper motions, their spatial distribution and placement in the CMD, reveals the existence of a Hyades-like age open cluster (log(t /yr) = 8.8) of moderately metal-poor chemical content ([Fe/H] = -0.4 dex), with a present-day mass of 3.3x10^3 Mo. The cluster exhibits an extended Main-Sequence turnoff (eMSTO) of nearly 500 Myr, while that computed assuming Gaussian distributions from photometric errors, stellar binarity, rotation and metallicity spread yields an eMSTO of ~340 Myr. Such an age difference points to the existence within the cluster of stellar populations with different ages., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures. Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The giant HII region W31 hosts the populous star cluster W31-CL and others projected on or in the surroundings. The most intriguing object is the stellar cluster SGR1806-20, which appears to be related to a Luminous Blue Variable (LBV) - a luminous supergiant star. We used the deep VVV J-,H-and K$_s$-bands photometry combined with 2MASS data in order to address the distance andother physical and structural properties of the clusters W31-CL, BDS 113 and SGR1806-20. Field-decontaminated photometry was used to analyse colour-magnitude diagrams and stellar radial density profiles, using procedures that our group has developed and employed in previous studies. We concludethat the clusters W31-CL and BDS113 are located at 4.5kpc and 4.8kpc and have ages of 0.5Myr and 1Myr, respectively. This result, together with the pre-main sequence (PMS) distribution in the colour-magnitude diagram, characterises them as members of the W31 complex. The present photometry detects the stellar content, addressed in previous spectroscopic classifications, in the direction of thecluster SGR1806-20, including the LBV, WRs, and foreground stars. We derive an age of 10$\pm$4Myr and a distance of d=8.0$\pm$1.95kpc. The cluster is extremely absorbed, with AV= 25mag. Thepresent results indicate that SGR1806-20 is more distant by a factor 1.8 with respect to the W31 complex, and thus not physically related to it., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, accepted to publication

We analyze a set of optical-to-near-infrared long-slit nuclear spectra of 16 infrared-luminous spiral galaxies. All of the studied sources present H$_2$ emission, which reflects the star-forming nature of our sample, and they clearly display H I emission lines in the optical. Their continua contain many strong stellar absorption lines, with the most common features due to Ca I, Ca II, Fe I, Na I, Mg I, in addition to prominent absorption bands of TiO, VO, ZrO, CN and CO. We report a homogeneous set of equivalent width (EW) measurements for 45 indices, from optical to NIR species for the 16 star-forming galaxies as well as for 19 early type galaxies where we collected the data from the literature. This selected set of emission and absorption-feature measurements can be used to test predictions of the forthcoming generations of stellar population models. We find correlations among the different absorption features and propose here correlations between optical and NIR indices, as well as among different NIR indices, and compare them with model predictions. While for the optical absorption features the models consistently agree with the observations,the NIR indices are much harder to interpret. For early-type spirals the measurements agree roughly with the models, while for star-forming objects they fail to predict the strengths of these indices., Comment: accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present a catalog of Galactic star clusters, associations and candidates with 10978 entries. This multi-band catalog was constructed over 20 years, starting with visual inspections on the Digital Sky Survey and incremented with the 2MASS, WISE, VVV, Spitzer and Herschel surveys. Large and small catalogs, as well as papers on individual objects have been systematically cross-identified. The catalog provides Galactic and equatorial coordinates, angular diameters, and chronologically ordered designations, making it simple to assign discoveries, and verify how often the objects were cataloged by different authors, search methods and/or surveys. Detection in a single band is the minimum constraint to validate an entry. About 3200 objects have measured parameters in the literature. A fundamental contribution of the present study is to present additional $\approx7700$ objects for first analyses of nature, photometry, spectroscopy and structure. The present focus is not to compile or determine fundamental parameters, but to provide a catalog characterizing uniformly the entries. A major result is that now 4060 embedded clusters are catologed, a factor of $\approx2$ larger than open clusters. Besides cross-identifications in different references and wavelength domains, we also communicate the discovery of 638 star clusters and alike objects. The present general catalog provides previously studied objects and thousands of additional entries in a homogeneous way, a timely contribution to {\em Gaia} related works., Comment: Accepted in AJ; Tables 2-5 are available in electronic form

This work presents an approach (fitCMD) designed to obtain a comprehensive set of astrophysical parameters from colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of star clusters. Based on initial mass function (IMF) properties taken from isochrones, fitCMD searches for the values of total (or cluster) stellar mass, age, global metallicity, foreground reddening, distance modulus, and magnitude-dependent photometric completeness that produce the artificial CMD that best reproduces the observed one; photometric scatter is also taken into account in the artificial CMDs. Inclusion of photometric completeness proves to be an important feature of fitCMD, something that becomes apparent especially when luminosity functions are considered. These parameters are used to build a synthetic CMD that also includes photometric scatter. Residual minimization between the observed and synthetic CMDs leads to the best-fit parameters. When tested against artificial star clusters, fitCMD shows to be efficient both in terms of computational time and ability to recover the input values., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The Javalambre Photometric Local Universe Survey (J-PLUS) provides wide field-of-view images in 12 narrow, intermediate and broad-band filters optimized for stellar photometry. Here we have applied J-PLUS data for the first time for the study of Galactic GCs using science verification data obtained for the very metal-poor GC M\,15. Our J-PLUS data provide low-resolution spectral energy distributions covering the near-UV to the near-IR, allowing us to search for MPs based on pseudo-spectral fitting diagnostics. J-PLUS CMDs are found to be particularly useful to search for splits in the sequences formed by the upper red giant branch (RGB) and asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. We interpret these split sequences as evidence for the presence of MPs. This demonstrates that the J-PLUS survey will have sufficient spatial coverage and spectral resolution to perform a large statistical study of GCs through multi-band photometry in the coming years., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures. We use deep multi-epoch near-IR images of the VISTA Variables in the V\'ia L\'actea (VVV) Survey to search for RR Lyrae stars towards the Southern Galactic plane. Here we report the discovery of a group of RR Lyrae stars close together in VVV tile d025. Inspection of the VVV images and PSF photometry reveals that most of these stars are likely to belong to a globular cluster, that matches the position of the previously known star cluster FSR\,1716. The stellar density map of the field yields a $>100$ sigma detection for this candidate globular cluster, that is centered at equatorial coordinates $RA_{J2000}=$16:10:30.0, $DEC_{J2000}=-$53:44:56; and galactic coordinates $l=$329.77812, $b=-$1.59227. The color-magnitude diagram of this object reveals a well populated red giant branch, with a prominent red clump at $K_s=13.35 \pm 0.05$, and $J-K_s=1.30 \pm 0.05$. We present the cluster RR Lyrae positions, magnitudes, colors, periods and amplitudes. The presence of RR Lyrae indicates an old globular cluster, with age $>10$ Gyr. We classify this object as an Oosterhoff type I globular cluster, based on the mean period of its RR Lyrae type ab, $=0.540$ days, and argue that this is a relatively metal-poor cluster with $[Fe/H] = -1.5 \pm 0.4$ dex. The mean extinction and reddening for this cluster are $A_{K_s}=0.38 \pm 0.02$, and $E(J-K_s)=0.72 \pm 0.02$ mag, respectively, as measured from the RR Lyrae colors and the near-IR color-magnitude diagram. We also measure the cluster distance using the RR Lyrae type ab stars. The cluster mean distance modulus is $(m-M)_0 = 14.38 \pm 0.03$ mag, implying a distance $D = 7.5 \pm 0.2$ kpc, and a Galactocentric distance $R_G=4.3$ kpc., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures. We present wide field JHKs photometry of 16 Galactic globular clusters located towards the Galactic bulge, calibrated on the 2MASS photometric system. Differential reddening corrections and statistical field star decontamination are employed for all of these clusters before fitting fiducial sequences to the cluster red giant branches (RGBs). Observed values and uncertainties are reported for several photometric features, including the magnitude of the RGB bump, tip, the horizontal branch (HB) and the slope of the upper RGB. The latest spectroscopically determined chemical abundances are used to build distance- and reddening-independent relations between observed photometric features and cluster metallicity, optimizing the sample size and metallicity baseline of these relations by supplementing our sample with results from the literature. We find that the magnitude different between the HB and the RGB bump can be used to predict metallicities, in terms of both iron abundance [Fe/H] and global metallicity [M/H], with a precision of better than 0.1 dex in all three near-IR bandpasses for relative metal-rich ([M/H]$\gtrsim$-1) clusters. Meanwhile, both the slope of the upper RGB and the magnitude difference between the RGB tip and bump are useful metallicity indicators over the entire sampled metallicity range (-2$\lesssim$[M/H]$\lesssim$0) with a precision of 0.2 dex or better, despite model predictions that the RGB slope may become unreliable at high (near-solar) metallicities. Until recently it was thought that high Galactic latitude clouds were a non-star-forming ensemble. However, in a previous study we reported the discovery of two embedded clusters (ECs) far away from the Galactic plane ($\sim5$ kpc). In our recent star cluster catalogue we provided additional high and intermediate latitude cluster candidates. This work aims to clarify if our previous detection of star clusters far away from the disc represents just an episodic event or if the star cluster formation is currently a systematic phenomenon in the Galactic halo. We analyse the nature of four clusters found in our recent catalogue and report the discovery of three new ECs with unusually high latitude and distance from the Galactic disc midplane. All of these clusters are younger than 5 Myr. The high-latitude ECs C 932, C 934, and C 939 appear to be related to a cloud complex about 5 kpc below the Galactic disc, under the Local arm. The other clusters are above the disc, C 1074 and C 1100 with a vertical distance of $\sim3$ kpc, C 1099 with $\sim2$ kpc, and C 1101 with $\sim1.8$ kpc. According to the derived parameters there occur ECs located below and above the disc, which is an evidence of widespread star cluster formation throughout the Galactic halo. Thus, this study represents a paradigm shift, in the sense that a sterile halo becomes now a host of ongoing star formation. The origin and fate of these ECs remain open. There are two possibilities for their origin, Galactic fountain or infall. The discovery of ECs far from the disc suggests that the Galactic halo is more actively forming stars than previously thought and since most ECs do not survive the \textit{infant mortality} it may be raining stars from the halo into the disc, and/or the halo harbours generations of stars formed in clusters like those hereby detected., Comment: 9 pages, 11 figures

This project is a massive near-infrared (NIR) search for variable stars in highly reddened and obscured open cluster (OC) fields projected on regions of the Galactic bulge and disk. The search is performed using photometric NIR data in the $J$-, $H$- and $K_s$- bands obtained from the Vista Variables in the V\'ia L\'actea (VVV) Survey. We performed in each cluster field a variability search using Stetson's variability statistics to select the variable candidates. Later, those candidates were subjected to a frequency analysis using the Generalized Lomb-Scargle and the Phase Dispersion Minimization algorithms. The number of independent observations range between 63 and 73. The newly discovered variables in this study, 157 in total in three different known OCs, are classified based on their light curve shapes, periods, amplitudes and their location in the corresponding color-magnitude $(J-K_s,K_s)$ and color-color $(H-K_s,J-H)$ diagrams. We found 5 possible Cepheid stars which, based on the period-luminosity relation, are very likely type II Cepheids located behind the bulge. Among the newly discovered variables, there are eclipsing binaries, $\delta$ Scuti, as well as background RR Lyrae stars. Using the new version of the Wilson & Devinney code as well as the "Physics Of Eclipsing Binaries" (PHOEBE) code, we analyzed some of the best eclipsing binaries we discovered. Our results show that these studied systems turn out to be ranging from detached to double-contact binaries, with low eccentricities and high inclinations of approximately $80^{\circ}$. We report the discovery of 652 star clusters, stellar groups and candidates in the Milky Way with WISE. Most of the objects are projected close to Galactic Plane and are embedded clusters. The present sample complements a similar study (Paper I) which provided 437 star clusters and alike. We find evidence that star formation processes span a wide range of sizes, from populous dense clusters to small compact embedded ones, sparse stellar groups or in relative isolation. The present list indicates multiple stellar generations during the embedded phase, with giant molecular clouds collapsing into several clumps composing an embedded cluster aggregate. We investigate the field star decontaminated Colour Magnitude Diagrams and Radial Density Profiles of 9 cluster candidates in the list, and derive their parameters, confirming them as embedded clusters., Comment: 22 pages, 11 figures

We investigate the dynamical evolution of 40 open clusters (OCs) by means of their astrophysical parameters derived from field-decontaminated 2MASS photometry. We find a bifurcation in the planes core radius vs. age and cluster radius vs. age, in which part of the clusters appear to expand with time probably due to the presence of stellar black holes while others seem to shrink due to dynamical relaxation. Mass functions (MFs) are built for 3$/$4 of the sample (31 OCs), which are used to search for indications of mass segregation and external dynamical processes by means of relations among astrophysical, structural and evolutionary parameters. We detect a flattening of MF slopes ocurring at the evolutionary parameters $\tau_{core}\leq 32$ and $\tau_{overall}\leq 30$, respectively. Within the uncertainties involved, the overall MF slopes of 14 out of 31 OCs with $m_{overall} > 500~M_{\odot}$ are consistent with Kroupa's initial mass function, implying little or no dynamical evolution for these clusters. In the present work we investigate the properties of 18 embedded clusters (ECs). The sample includes 11 previously known clusters and we report the discovery of 7 ECs on WISE images, thus complementing our recent list of 437 new clusters. The main goal is to use such clusters to shed new light on the Galactic structure by tracing the spiral arms with cluster distances. Our results favour a four-armed spiral pattern tracing three arms, Sagitarius-Carina, Perseus, and the Outer arm. The Sagitarius-Carina spiral arm is probed in the borderline of the third and fourth quadrants at a distance from the Galactic centre of $d_1\sim6.4$ kpc adopting $R_{\odot}=7.2$ kpc, or $d_2\sim7.2$ kpc for $R_{\odot}=8.0$ kpc. Most ECs in our sample are located in the Perseus arm that is traced in the second and third quadrants and appear to be at Galactocentric distances in the range $d_1=9-10.5$ kpc or $d_2=9.8-11.3$ kpc. Dolidze 25, Bochum 2, and Camargo 445 are located in the Outer arm that extends along the second and third Galactic quadrants with a distance from the Galactic centre in the range of $d_1=12.5-14.5$ kpc or $d_2=13.5-15.5$ kpc. We find further evidence that in the Galaxy ECs are predominantly located within the thin disc and along spiral arms. They are excellent tools for tracing these Galactic features and therefore new searches for ECs can contribute to a better understanding of the Galactic structure. Molecular clouds at very high latitude ($b>60^{\circ}$) away from the Galactic plane are rare and in general are expected to be non-star-forming. However, we report the discovery of two embedded clusters (Camargo 438 and Camargo 439) within the high-latitude molecular cloud HRK 81.4-77.8 using WISE. Camargo 439 with Galactic coordinates $\ell=81.11^{\circ}$ and $b=-77.84^{\circ}$ is an $\sim2$ Myr embedded cluster (EC) located at a distance from the Sun of $d_{\odot}=5.09\pm0.47$ kpc. Adopting the distance of the Sun to the Galactic centre $R_{\odot}=7.2$ kpc we derive for Camargo 439 a Galactocentric distance of $R_{GC}=8.70\pm0.26$ kpc and a vertical distance from the plane of $-4.97\pm0.46$ kpc. Camargo 438 at $\ell=79.66^{\circ}$ and $b=-78.86^{\circ}$ presents similar values. The derived parameters for these two ECs put HRK 81.4-77.8 in the halo at a distance from the Galactic centre of $\sim8.7$ kpc and $\sim5.0$ kpc from the disc. Star clusters provide the only direct means to determine the high latitude molecular cloud distances. The present study shows that the molecular cloud HRK 81.4-77.8 is currently forming stars, apparently an unprecedented event detected so far among high latitude clouds. We carried out a preliminary orbit analysis. We carried out a search for new infrared star clusters, stellar groups and candidates using WISE images, which are very sensitive to dust emission nebulae. We report the discovery of 437 embedded clusters and stellar groups that show a variety of structures, both in the stellar and nebular components. Pairs or small groupings of clusters are observed, suggesting multiple generations at the early formation stages. The resulting catalogue provides Galactic and equatorial coordinates, together with angular sizes for all objects. The nature of a representative test sub-sample of 14 clusters is investigated in detail by means of 2MASS photometry. The colour magnitude diagrams and radial density distributions characterize them as stellar clusters. The 437 new objects were found in the ranges $145^\circ\,\leq\,\ell\,\leq 290^\circ$ and $-25^\circ\,\leq\,b\,\leq 20^\circ$, and they appear to be a major object source for future studies of star cluster formation and their early evolution. Fundamental parameters characterizing the end-state of intermediate-mass stars may be constrained by discovering planetary nebulae (PNe) in open clusters (OCs). Cluster membership may be exploited to establish the distance, luminosity, age, and physical size for PNe, and the intrinsic luminosity and mass of its central star. Four potential PN-OC associations were investigated, to assess the cluster membership for the PNe. Radial velocities were measured from intermediate-resolution optical spectra, complemented with previous estimates in the literature. When the radial velocity study supported the PN/OC association, we analyzed if other parameters (e.g., age, distance, reddening, central star brightness) were consistent with this conclusion. Our measurements imply that the PNe VBe3 and HeFa1 are not members of the OCs NGC5999 and NGC6067, respectively, and likely belong to the background bulge population. Conversely, consistent radial velocities indicate that NGC2452/NGC2453 could be associated, but our results are not conclusive and additional observations are warranted. Finally, we demonstrate that all the available information point to He2-86 being a young, highly internally obscured PN member of NGC4463. New near-infrared photometry acquired via the Vista Variables in the Via Lactea ESO public survey was used in tandem with existing UBV photometry to measure the distance, reddening, and age of NGC4463, finding d=1.55+-0.10 kpc, E(B-V)=0.41+-0.02, and tau=65+-10 Myr, respectively. We build differential-reddening maps for 66 Galactic globular clusters (GCs) with archival HST WFC/ACS F606W and F814W photometry. Because of the different GC sizes (characterised by the half-light radius $R_h$) and distances to the Sun, the WFC/ACS field of view ($200\arcsec\times200\arcsec$) coverage ($R_{obs}$) lies in the range $1\la R_{obs}/R_h\la15$ for about 85% of the sample, with about 10% covering only the inner ($R_{obs}\la R_h$) parts. We divide the WFC/ACS field of view across each cluster in a regular cell grid, and extract the stellar-density Hess diagram from each cell, shifting it in colour and magnitude along the reddening vector until matching the mean diagram. Thus, the maps correspond to the internal dispersion of the reddening around the mean. Depending on the number of available stars (i.e. probable members with adequate photometric errors), the angular resolution of the maps range from $\approx7\arcsec\times7\arcsec$ to $\approx20\arcsec\times20\arcsec$. We detect spatially-variable extinction in the 66 globular clusters studied, with mean values ranging from $\mEBV\approx0.018$ (NGC\,6981) up to $\mEBV\approx0.16$ (Palomar\,2). Differential-reddening correction decreases the observed foreground reddening and the apparent distance modulus but, since they are related to the same value of \EBV, the distance to the Sun is conserved. Fits to the mean-ridge lines of the highly-extincted and photometrically scattered globular cluster Palomar\,2 show that age and metallicity also remain unchanged after the differential-reddening correction, but measurement uncertainties decrease because of the reduced scatter. The lack of systematic variations of \mEBV\ with both the foreground reddening and the sampled cluster area indicates that the main source of differential reddening is interstellar., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS

$UBVRI$ photometry of the five open clusters Czernik 4, Berkeley 7, NGC 2236, NGC 7226 and King 12 has been carried out using ARIES 104 cm telescope, Nainital. Fundamental cluster parameters such as foreground reddening $E(B-V)$, distance, and age have been derived by means of the observed two colour and colour-magnitude diagrams, coupled to comparisons with theoretical models. $E(B-V)$ values range from 0.55 to 0.74 mag, while ages derived for these clusters range from $\sim$10 to $\sim$500 Myr. We have also studied the spatial structure, mass function and mass segregation effects. In this paper we investigate the nature of 27 star cluster candidates, most of them projected towards the Galactic anticentre. We derive fundamental parameters for 20 confirmed clusters, among these 7 are new identifications. Four of the remaining are uncertain cases that require deeper photometry to establish their nature, and 4 are probably field fluctuations. In addition, we provide a partial census of the open clusters towards the Galactic anticentre. We also include in this study some interesting objects outside the anticentre region, in the second and third Galactic quadrants, mainly in the Perseus and Outer arms. These clusters confirm the extension of the Outer arm along the third quadrant. We also point out that the embedded cluster FSR 486, at a distance of 7.2 +/- 1.3 kpc from de Sun, is projected on the line of sight of the Local Group irregular dwarf galaxy IC 10. Thus, part of the unusual properties of IC 10 may be explained by a Galactic contamination. We point out the importance of embedded clusters in tracing the spiral structure.

New X-ray (XMM-Newton) and JHKs (OMM) observations for members of the star cluster Alessi 95, which Turner et al.(2012) discovered hosts the classical Cepheid SU Cas, were used in tandem with UCAC3 (proper motion) and 2MASS observations to determine precise cluster parameters: E(J-H)=0.08+-0.02 and d=405+-15 pc. The ensuing consensus among cluster, pulsation, IUE, and trigonometric distances (d=414+-5(se)+-10(sd) pc) places SU Cas in a select group of nearby fundamental Cepheid calibrators (Delta Cep, Zeta Gem). High-resolution X-ray observations may be employed to expand that sample as the data proved pertinent for identifying numerous stars associated with SU Cas. Acquiring X-ray observations of additional fields may foster efforts to refine Cepheid calibrations used to constrain H_0., Comment: To appear in ApJ

We investigate the nature of 48 low-level stellar overdensities (from Froebrich, Scholz, and Raftery catalogue - FSR07) projected towards the Galactic anticentre and derive fundamental parameters for the confirmed clusters, thus improving the open cluster (OC) census in that direction. Parameters are derived with field-star decontaminated photometry, colour-magnitude filters and stellar radial density profiles. Among the 48 targets, we identified 18 star clusters, 6 previously studied OCs, and 7 probable clusters that require deeper photometry to establish the nature. We discovered 7 new clusters, 6 of them forming an association of clusters with BPI 14, FSR 777, Kronberger 1, and Stock 8 in the region of the nebula IC 417 and related to the Aur OB2 association, and one embedded in the nebula Sh2-229. We also derive parameters for these three non-FSR07 clusters, because they are important in determining the structure of the Galactic anticentre. Thus, 58 objects are analysed in this work and we could derive fundamental parameters for 28 of them. The scenario in the IC 417 star forming region is consistent with a sequential event. FSR 888 and FSR 890 are embedded in Sh2-249 within the Gem OB1 association. According to the distance derived for these clusters and those in the association of clusters, both Aur OB2 and Gem OB1 are located in the Perseus arm., Comment: 17 pages, 20 figures, 7 tables

The initial and present-day mass functions (ICMF and PDMF, respectively) of the Galactic globular clusters (GCs) are constructed based on their observed luminosities, the stellar evolution and dynamical mass-loss processes, and the mass-to-light ratio (MLR). Under these conditions, a Schechter-like ICMF is evolved for approximately a Hubble time and converted into the luminosity function (LF), which requires finding the values of 5 free parameters: the mean GC age (\tA), the dissolution timescale of a $10^5 \ms$ cluster ($\tau_5$), the exponential truncation mass (\mc) and 2 MLR parametrising constants. This is achieved by minimising the residuals between the evolved and observed LFs, with the minimum residuals and realistic parameters obtained with MLRs that increase with luminosity (or mass). The optimum PMDFs indicate a total stellar mass of $\sim4\times10^7$ \ms\ still bound to GCs, representing $\sim15%$ of the mass in clusters at the beginning of the gas-free evolution. The corresponding ICMFs resemble the scale-free MFs of young clusters and molecular clouds observed in the local Universe, while the PDMFs follow closely a lognormal distribution with a turnover at $\mto\sim7\times10^4$\,\ms. For most of the GC mass range, we find an MLR lower than usually adopted, which explains the somewhat low \mto. Our results confirm that the MLR increases with cluster mass (or luminosity), and suggest that GCs and young clusters share a common origin in terms of physical processes related to formation., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS

Usually, important parameters of young, low-mass star clusters are very difficult to obtain by means of photometry, especially when differential reddening and/or binaries occur in large amounts. We present a semi-analytical approach that, applied to the Hess diagram of a young star cluster, is able to retrieve the values of mass, age, star-formation spread, distance modulus, foreground and differential reddening, and binary fraction. The global optimisation method known as adaptive simulated annealing (ASA) is used to minimise the residuals between the observed and simulated Hess diagrams of a star cluster. The simulations are realistic and take the most relevant parameters of young clusters into account. Important features of the simulations are: a normal (Gaussian) differential reddening distribution, a time-decreasing star-formation rate, the unresolved binaries, and the smearing effect produced by photometric uncertainties on Hess diagrams. We present an approach that improves the search for reliable astrophysical parameters (e.g. age, mass, and distance) of differentially-reddened, pre-main sequence-rich star clusters. It involves simulating conditions related to the early-cluster phases, in particular the differential and foreground reddenings, and internal age spread. Given the loose constraints imposed by these factors, the derivation of parameters based only on photometry may be uncertain, especially for the poorly-populated clusters. We consider a wide range of cluster {\em (i)} mass and {\em (ii)} age, and different values of {\em (iii)} distance modulus, {\em (iv)} differential and {\em (v)} foreground reddenings. Photometric errors and their relation with magnitude are also taken into account. We also investigate how the presence of unresolved binaries affect the derived parameters. For each set of {\em (i)} - {\em (v)} we build the corresponding model Hess diagram, and compute the root mean squared residual with respect to the observed Hess diagram. The parameters that produce the minimum residuals between model and observed Hess diagrams are searched by exploring the full parameter space of {\em (i)} - {\em (v)} by means of {\em brute force}, which may be time consuming but efficient. Control tests show that an adequate convergence is achieved allowing for solutions with residuals 10% higher than the absolute minimum. Compared to a colour-magnitude diagram containing only single stars, the presence of 100% of unresolved binaries has little effect on cluster age, foreground and differential reddenings; significant differences show up in the cluster mass and distance from the Sun. VISTA Variables in the V\'{\i}a L\'actea (VVV) is one of the six ESO Public Surveys operating on the new 4-meter Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA). VVV is scanning the Milky Way bulge and an adjacent section of the disk, where star formation activity is high. One of the principal goals of the VVV Survey is to find new star clusters of different ages. In order to trace the early epochs of star cluster formation we concentrated our search in the directions to those of known star formation regions, masers, radio, and infrared sources. The disk area covered by VVV was visually inspected using the pipeline processed and calibrated $K_{\rm S}$-band tile images for stellar overdensities. Subsequently, we examined the composite $JHK_{\rm S}$ and $ZJK_{\rm S}$ color images of each candidate. PSF photometry of $15\times15$ arcmin fields centered on the candidates was then performed on the Cambridge Astronomy Survey Unit reduced images. After statistical field-star decontamination, color-magnitude and color-color diagrams were constructed and analyzed. We report the discovery of 96 new infrared open clusters and stellar groups. Most of the new cluster candidates are faint and compact (with small angular sizes), highly reddened, and younger than 5\,Myr. This paper investigates the star formation rate (SFR) in the Solar neighbourhood. First, we build the local age distribution function (ADF) with an updated sample of 442 star clusters located at less than 1\,kpc from the Sun. Next, we define the SFR, compute the individual mass evolution of a population of artificial clusters covering the broad range of parameters observed in actual clusters, and assume 100\,\ms\ as the low-mass limit for effective cluster observation. This leads to a simulated ADF, which is compared to the low-noise Solar neighbourhood ADF. The best match corresponds to a non-constant SFR presenting two conspicuous excesses for ages $\le9$\,Myr and between 220-600\,Myr (the local starburst). The average formation rate is $\bar{SFR}\approx(2500\pm500)\,\mmy$, corresponding to the average surface formation rate $\bar{\ssfr}\approx(790\pm160)\,\mmk$. These values are consistent with the formation rate inferred from embedded clusters (ECs), but much lower ($\la16%$) than that implied by field stars. Both the local starburst and the recent star formation period require $SFR\sim2\times\bar{SFR}$ to be described. The simulations show that $91.2\pm2.7%$ of the clusters created in the Solar neighbourhood do not survive the first 10\,Myr, which is consistent with the rate of EC dissolution., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS

We investigate 5 embedded clusters (ECs) and the extended stellar group itself of the prominent H\,II region NGC\,2174 (Sh2-252), which presents scarce and heterogeneous information, coming from the optical and infrared. Considering the discrepant values of distance and age, the clusters and the H\,II region appear to be physically unrelated. The analysis is based on field-star decontaminated 2MASS photometry, which allows sampling the pre-main sequence (PMS). We find that Sh2-252A, C, E, NGC\,2175s, and Teu\,136 are small ECs (radius within $1.0 - 2.3$\,pc) characterised by a similar age ($\sim5$\,Myr), reddening ($\aV\sim1$), distance from the Sun ($\ds\sim1.4$\,kpc), and low mass ($60-200\,\ms$). This age is consistent with the H\,II region, the presence of O and B stars still in the MS, and the dominance ($\ga95%$ in number) of PMS stars in colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs). NGC\,2175 is not a star cluster, but an extended stellar group that encompasses the ECs Sh2-252\,A and C. It contains $\sim36%$ of the member stars (essentially PMS) in the area, with the remaining belonging to the 2 ECs. CMDs of the overall star-forming region and the ECs provide $\ds=1.4\pm0.4$\,kpc for the NGC\,2174 complex, consistent with the value estimated for the physically-related association Gem\,OB1. Our uniform approach shows that NGC\,2174 and its related ECs (except, perhaps, for Teu\,136) are part of a single star-forming complex. CMD similarities among the ECs and the overall region suggest a coeval (to within $\pm5$\,Myr) star-forming event extending for several Myr. At least 4 ECs originated in the event, together with the off-cluster star formation that probably gave rise to the scattered stars of NGC\,2175., Comment: Accepted by MNRAS

We investigate the effect that the usually large errors associated with ground-based proper motion (PM) components have on the determination of a star cluster's velocity dispersion (\sv). Rather than histograms, we work with PM distribution functions (PMDFs), taking the $1\sigma$ uncertainties formally into account. In this context, a cluster's intrinsic PMDF is broadened by the error distribution function (eDF) that, given the average error amplitude, has a width usually comparable to the cluster PMDF. Thus, we apply a Richardson-Lucy (RL) deconvolution to the PMDFs of a set of relatively nearby and populous open clusters (OCs), using the eDFs as point spread functions (PSFs). The OCs are NGC\,1039 (M\,34), NGC\,2477, NGC\,2516, NGC\,2682 (M\,67), and NGC\,7762. The deconvolved PMDFs are approximately Gaussian in shape, with dispersions lower than the observed ones by a factor of 4-10. NGC\,1039 and NGC\,2516, the nearest OCs of the sample, have deconvolved \sv\ compatible with those of bound OCs of mass $\sim10^3$\,\ms. NGC\,2477 and NGC\,2682 have deconvolved PMDFs with a secondary bump, shifted towards higher average velocities, which may be an artefact of the RL deconvolution when applied to asymmetric profiles. In this work we investigate the nature of 50 overdensities from the catalogue of Froebrich, Scholz, and Raftery (FSR) projected towards the Galactic anticentre, in the sector 160{\deg} \leq \ell \leq 200{\deg}. The sample contains candidates with |b| \leq 20{\deg} classified by FSR as probable open cluster (OC) and labelled with quality flags 2 and 3. Our main purpose is to determine the nature of these OC candidates and the fraction of these objects that are unknown OCs, as well as to derive astrophysical parameters (age, reddening, distance, core and cluster radii) for the clusters and to investigate the relationship among parameters. The analysis is based on 2MASS J, (J-H), and (J-Ks) colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs), and stellar radial density profiles (RDPs) built with decontamination tools. The tools are a field star decontamination algorithm, used to uncover the cluster's intrinsic CMD morphology, and colour-magnitude filters to isolate stars with a high probability of being cluster members. Out of the 50 objects, 16 (32%) are star clusters. We show that 9 (18%) overdensities are new OCs (FSR 735, FSR 807, FSR 812, FSR 826, FSR 852, FSR 904, FSR 941, FSR 953, and FSR 955) and 7 (14%) are previously studied or catalogued OCs (KKC1, FSR 795, Cz 22, FSR 828, FSR 856, Cz 24, and NGC 2234). These are OCs with ages in the range 5 Myr to 1 Gyr, at distances from the Sun 1.28 \precnapprox d_Sun(kpc) \precnapprox 5.78 and Galactocentric distances 8.5 R_GC(kpc) \precnapprox 12.9. We also derive parameters for the previously analysed OCs Cz 22 and NGC 2234. We study how the spectral fitting of galaxies, in terms of light fractions derived in one spectral region translates into another region, by using results from evolutionary synthesis models. In particular, we examine propagation dependencies on Evolutionary Population Synthesis (EPS, {\sc grasil}, {\sc galev}, Maraston and {\sc galaxev}) models, age, metallicity, and stellar evolution tracks over the near-UV---near infrared (NUV---NIR, 3500\AA\ to 2.5\mc) spectral region. Our main results are: as expected, young ($t \lesssim$ 400 Myr) stellar population fractions derived in the optical cannot be directly compared to those derived in the NIR, and vice versa. In contrast, intermediate to old age ($t \gtrsim$ 500 Myr) fractions are similar over the whole spectral region studied. The metallicity has a negligible effect on the propagation of the stellar population fractions derived from NUV --- NIR. The same applies to the different EPS models, but restricted to the range between 3800 \AA\ and 9000 \AA. However, a discrepancy between {\sc galev}/Maraston and {\sc grasil}/{\sc galaxev} models occurs in the NIR. Also, the initial mass function (IMF) is not important for the synthesis propagation. Compared to {\sc starlight} synthesis results, our propagation predictions agree at $\sim$95% confidence level in the optical, and $\sim$85% in the NIR. {\bf In summary, spectral fitting} performed in a restricted spectral range should not be directly propagated from the NIR to the UV/Optical, or vice versa. We analyze the correlation of the positions of gamma-ray sources in the Fermi Large Area Telescope First Source Catalog (1FGL) and the First LAT Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) Catalog (1LAC) with the arrival directions of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) observed with the Pierre Auger Observatory, in order to investigate the origin of UHECRs. We find that Galactic sources and blazars identified in the 1FGL are not significantly correlated with UHECRs, while the 1LAC sources display a mild correlation (2.6 sigma level) on a ~2.4 degree angular scale. When selecting only the 1LAC AGNs closer than 200 Mpc, we find a strong association (5.4 sigma) between their positions and the directions of UHECRs on a ~17 degree angular scale; the probability of the observed configuration being due to an isotropic flux of cosmic rays is 5x10^{-8}. There is also a 5 sigma correlation with nearby 1LAC sources on a 6.5 degree scale. We identify 7 "gamma-ray loud" AGNs which are associated with UHECRs within ~17 degree and are likely candidates for the production sites of UHECRs: Centaurus A, NGC 4945, ESO 323-G77, 4C+04.77, NGC 1218, RX J0008.0+1450 and NGC 253. We interpret these results as providing additional support to the hypothesis of the origin of UHECRs in nearby extragalactic objects. We derive fundamental, structural, and photometric parameters of 15 overlooked Ruprecht (hereafter Ru) star clusters by means of 2MASS photometry and field-star decontamination. Ru\,1, 10, 23, 26, 27, 34, 35, 37, 41, 54, 60, 63, 66, and 152 are located in the third Galactic quadrant, while Ru\,174 is in the first. With the constraints imposed by the field-decontaminated colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) and stellar radial density profiles (RDPs), we derive ages in the range 400\,Myr --- 1\,Gyr, except for the older Ru\,37, with $\sim3$\,Gyr. Distances from the Sun are within $\rm1.5\la\ds(kpc)\la8.0$. The RDPs are well-defined and can be described by a King-like profile for most of the radial range, except for Ru\,23, 27, 41, 63, and 174, which present a conspicuous stellar density excess in the central region. The clusters dwell between (or close to) the Perseus and Sagittarius-Carina arms. We derive evidence in favour of cluster size increasing with distance to the Galactic plane ($\zgc$), which is consistent with a low frequency of tidal stress associated with high-$|\zgc|$ regions. The clusters are rather faint even in the near-infrared, with apparent integrated \jj\ magnitudes within $6.4\la m_J\la9.8$, while their absolute magnitudes are $-6.6\la M_J\la-2.6$. Extrapolation of the relation between $M_V$ and $M_J$, derived for globular clusters, suggests that they are low-luminosity optical clusters, with $-5\la M_V\la-1$., Comment: The paper contains 11 figures and 3 tables. We investigate the nature and possible evolution of the young Galactic star clusters Collinder 197 (Cr 197) and vdB 92. The colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) are basically characterised by a poorly-populated MS and a dominant fraction ($\ga75%$) of PMS stars, and the combined MS and PMS CMD morphology in both clusters consistently constrains the age to within $5\pm4$ Myr, with a $\sim10$ Myr spread in the star formation process. The MS$ + $PMS stellar masses are $\approx660^{+102}_{-59} \ms$ (Cr 197) and $\approx750^{+101}_{-51} \ms$ (vdB 92). Cr 197 and vdB 92 appear to be abnormally large, when compared to clusters within the same age range. They have irregular stellar radial density distributions (RDPs) with a marked excess in the innermost region, a feature that, at less than 10 Myr, is more likely related to the star formation and/or molecular cloud fragmentation than to age-dependent dynamical effects. The velocity dispersion of both clusters, derived from proper motions, is in the range $\sim15 - 22 \kms$. Both clusters appear to be in a super-virial state, with velocity dispersions higher than those expected of nearly-virialised clusters of similar mass and size. A possible interpretation is that Cr 197 and vdB 92 deviate critically from dynamical equilibrium, and may dissolve into the field. We also conclude that early cluster dissolution leaves detectable imprints on RDPs of clusters as massive as several $10^2 \ms$. We investigate the degree of spatial correlation among extended structures in the LMC and SMC. To this purpose we work with sub-samples characterised by different properties such as age and size, taken from the updated catalogue of Bica et al. or gathered in the present work. The structures are classified as star clusters or non-clusters (basically, nebular complexes and their stellar associations). The radius distribution functions follow power-laws ($dN/dR\propto R^{-\alpha}$) with slopes and maximum radius ($R_{max}$) that depend on object class (and age). Non-clusters are characterised by $\alpha\approx1.9$ and $R_{max}\la472$ pc, while young clusters (age $\la10$ Myr) have $\alpha\approx3.6$ and $R_{max}\la15$ pc, and old ones (age $\ga600$ Myr) have $\alpha\approx2.5$ and $R_{max}\la40$ pc. Young clusters present a high degree of spatial self-correlation and, especially, correlate with star-forming structures, which does not occur with the old ones. This is consistent with the old clusters having been heavily mixed up, since their ages correspond to several LMC and SMC crossing times. On the other hand, with ages corresponding to fractions of the respective crossing times, the young clusters still trace most of their birthplace structural pattern. Also, small clusters ($R<10$ pc), as well as small non-clusters ($R<100$ pc), are spatially self-correlated, while their large counterparts of both classes are not. Teutsch145 and Teutsch146 are shown to be open clusters (OCs) orbiting well inside the Solar circle, a region where several dynamical processes combine to disrupt most OCs on a time-scale of a few 10^8yrs. BVI photometry from the GALILEO telescope is used to investigate the nature and derive the fundamental and structural parameters of the optically faint and poorly-known OCs Teutsch145 and 146. These parameters are computed by means of field-star decontaminated colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs) and stellar radial density profiles (RDPs). Cluster mass estimates are made based on the intrinsic mass functions (MFs). We derive the ages 200+100-50Myr and 400+/-100Myr, and the distances from the Sun 2.7+/-0.3kpc and 3.8+/-0.2kpc, respectively for Teutsch145 and 146. Their integrated apparent and absolute magnitudes are m_V ~ 12.4, m_V ~ 13.3, M_V ~- 5.6 and M_V ~- 5.3. The MFs (detected for stars with m>1Msun) have slopes similar to Salpeter's IMF. Extrapolated to the H-burning limit, the MFs would produce total stellar masses of ~1400Msun, typical of relatively massive OCs. Both OCs are located deep into the inner Galaxy and close to the Crux-Scutum arm. Since cluster-disruption processes are important, their primordial masses must have been higher than the present-day values. The conspicuous stellar density excess observed in the innermost bin of both RDPs might reflect the dynamical effects induced by a few 10^8yrs of external tidal stress., Comment: 8 pagas with 9 figs. Astrophysical parameters (\textit{age, reddening, distance, core and cluster radii}) of 14 open clusters (OCs) projected close to the Galactic plane are derived with 2MASS photometry. The OCs are Be 63, Be 84, Cz 6, Cz 7, Cz 12, Ru 141, Ru 144, Ru 172, FSR 101, FSR 1430, FSR 1471, FSR 162, FSR 178 and FSR 198. The OCs Be 63, Be 84, Ru 141, Ru 144, and Ru 172 are studied in more detail than in previous works, while the others have astrophysical parameters derived for the first time. The open clusters of the sample are located at $d_\odot=1.6-7.1$ kpc from the Sun and at Galactocentric distances $5.5-11.8$ kpc, with age in the range 10 Myr to 1.5 Gyr and reddening $E(B-V)$ in the range $0.19-2.56$ mag. The core and cluster radii are in the range $0.27-1.88$ pc and $2.2-11.27$ pc, respectively.
