Abstract

Indirect dark matter detection methods are used to observe the products of dark matter annihilations or decays originating from astrophysical objects where large amounts of dark matter are thought to accumulate. With neutrino telescopes, an excess of neutrinos is searched for in nearby dark matter reservoirs, such as the Sun and the Galactic Centre, which could potentially produce a sizeable flux of Standard Model particles. The KM3NeT infrastructure, currently under construction, comprises the ARCA and ORCA undersea \v{C}erenkov neutrino detectors located at two different sites in the Mediterranean Sea, offshore of Italy and France, respectively. The two detector configurations are optimised for the detection of neutrinos of different energies, enabling the search for dark matter particles with masses ranging from a few GeV/c$^2$ to hundreds of TeV/c$^2$. In this work, searches for dark matter annihilations in the Galactic Centre and the Sun with data samples taken with the first configurations of both detectors are presented. No significant excess over the expected background was found in either of the two analyses. Limits on the velocity-averaged self-annihilation cross section of dark matter particles are computed for five different primary annihilation channels in the Galactic Centre. For the Sun, limits on the spin-dependent and spin-independent scattering cross sections of dark matter with nucleons are given for three annihilation channels.

Abstract

The KM3NeT Collaboration has tackled a common challenge faced by the astroparticle physics community, namely adapting the experiment-specific simulation software to work with the CORSIKA air shower simulation output. The proposed solution is an extension of the open-source code gSeaGen, allowing for the transport of muons generated by CORSIKA to a detector of any size at an arbitrary depth. The gSeaGen code was not only extended in terms of functionalities but also underwent a thorough redesign of the muon propagation routine, resulting in a more accurate and efficient simulation. Abstract

Neutrinos described as an open quantum system may interact with the environment which introduces stochastic perturbations to their quantum phase. This mechanism leads to a loss of coherence along the propagation of the neutrino $-$ a phenomenon commonly referred to as decoherence $-$ and ultimately, to a modification of the oscillation probabilities. Fluctuations in space-time, as envisaged by various theories of quantum gravity, are a potential candidate for a decoherence-inducing environment. Consequently, the search for decoherence provides a rare opportunity to investigate quantum gravitational effects which are usually beyond the reach of current experiments. In this work, quantum decoherence effects are searched for in neutrino data collected by the KM3NeT/ORCA detector from January 2020 to November 2021. The analysis focuses on atmospheric neutrinos within the energy range of a few GeV to $100\,\mathrm{GeV}$. Adopting the open quantum system framework, decoherence is described in a phenomenological manner with the strength of the effect given by the parameters $\Gamma_{21}$ and $\Gamma_{31}$. Following previous studies, a dependence of the type $\Gamma_{ij} \propto (E/E_0)^n$ on the neutrino energy is assumed and the cases $n = -2,-1$ are explored. No significant deviation with respect to the standard oscillation hypothesis is observed. Therefore, $90\,\%$ CL upper limits are estimated as $\Gamma_{21} < 4.6\cdot 10^{-21}\,$GeV and $\Gamma_{31} < 8.4\cdot 10^{-21}\,$GeV for $n = -2$, and $\Gamma_{21} < 1.9\cdot 10^{-22}\,$GeV and $\Gamma_{31} < 2.7\cdot 10^{-22}\,$GeV for $n = -1$, respectively., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

Research suggests that acoustic technology may be able to detect ultra-high-energy neutrinos if a large amount of non-linear fluid is analyzed. When a neutrino interacts in water, it creates a quasi-instantaneous cascade of particles, heating that region of the fluid and emitting a tiny acoustic signal. This rapid heating produces a thermoacoustic Bipolar Pulse (BP) with unique characteristics such as a wide bandwidth and a narrow directivity for these frequencies. While dedicated devices for acoustic neutrino detection are currently non-existent, there are a few underwater neutrino telescopes that utilize optical technology, but often with an acoustic positioning system that deploys hydrophones in the infrastructure. The possibility of using them to study a BP caused by a neutrino interaction is currently being discussed. This study aims to evaluate the implementation of a trigger system to detect a possible BP in deep-sea hydrophones. For this, up to 24 hours of the raw acoustic signal recorded by the O$\nu$DE-2 station, which was located 25 km off-shore from Catania in the Western Ionian Sea, at 2100 m depth, is analyzed. The station used calibrated hydrophones from a few Hz to 70 kHz. In this work, a synthetic BP is created and added to the experimental data, allowing the study of its detection and the calculation of precision and recall.

Abstract

KM3NeT/ORCA is a water Cherenkov neutrino detector under construction and anchored at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea. The detector is designed to study oscillations of atmospheric neutrinos and determine the neutrino mass ordering. This paper focuses on an initial configuration of ORCA, referred to as ORCA6, which comprises six out of the foreseen 115 detection units of photo-sensors. A high-purity neutrino sample was extracted, corresponding to an exposure of 433 kton-years. The sample of 5828 neutrino candidates is analysed following a binned log-likelihood method in the reconstructed energy and cosine of the zenith angle. The atmospheric oscillation parameters are measured to be $\sin^2\theta_{23}= 0.51^{+0.04}_{-0.05}$, and $ \Delta m^2_{31} = 2.18^{+0.25}_{-0.35}\times 10^{-3}~\mathrm{eV^2} \cup \{-2.25,-1.76\}\times 10^{-3}~\mathrm{eV^2}$ at 68\% CL. Abstract

Gamma-ray bursts are promising candidate sources of high-energy astrophysical neutrinos. The recent GRB 221009A event, identified as the brightest gamma-ray burst ever detected, provides a unique opportunity to investigate hadronic emissions involving neutrinos. The KM3NeT undersea neutrino detectors participated in the worldwide follow-up effort triggered by the event, searching for neutrino events. In this letter, we summarize subsequent searches, in a wide energy range from MeV up to a few PeVs. No neutrino events are found in any of the searches performed. Upper limits on the neutrino emission associated with GRB 221009A are computed., Comment: 11 pages, 2 PDF figures. Submitted to JCAP

Abstract

The KM3NeT/ARCA neutrino detector is currently under construction at 3500 m depth offshore Capo Passero, Sicily, in the Mediterranean Sea. The main science objectives are the detection of high-energy cosmic neutrinos and the discovery of their sources. Simulations were conducted for the full KM3NeT/ARCA detector, instrumenting a volume of 1 km$^3$, to estimate the sensitivity and discovery potential to point-like neutrino sources and an all-sky diffuse neutrino flux. This paper covers the reconstruction of track- and shower-like signatures, as well as the criteria employed for neutrino event selection. By leveraging both the track and shower observation channels, the KM3NeT/ARCA detector demonstrates the capability to detect the diffuse astrophysical neutrino flux within half a year of operation, achieving a 5$\sigma$ statistical significance. With an angular resolution below 0.1$^\circ$ for tracks and under 2$^\circ$ for showers, the sensitivity to point-like neutrino sources surpasses existing observed limits across the entire sky., Comment: 20 pages, 30 figures, Published by EPJ-C

Abstract

The KM3NeT neutrino telescope is currently being deployed at two different sites in the Mediterranean Sea. First searches for astrophysical neutrinos have been performed using data taken with the partial detector configuration already in operation. The paper presents the results of two independent searches for neutrinos from compact binary mergers detected during the third observing run of the LIGO and Virgo gravitational wave interferometers. The first search looks for a global increase in the detector counting rates that could be associated with inverse beta decay events generated by MeV-scale electron anti-neutrinos. The second one focuses on upgoing track-like events mainly induced by muon (anti-)neutrinos in the GeV--TeV energy range. Both searches yield no significant excess for the sources in the gravitational wave catalogs. For each source, upper limits on the neutrino flux and on the total energy emitted in neutrinos in the respective energy ranges have been set. Stacking analyses of binary black hole mergers and neutron star-black hole mergers have also been performed to constrain the characteristic neutrino emission from these categories., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures

Abstract

The MAGNEX magnetic spectrometer is used in the experimental measurements of Double Charge Exchange and Multi-Nucleon Transfer reactions induced by heavy ions within the NUMEN project. These processes are characterized by small cross sections under a large background due to other reaction channels. Therefore an accurate control of the signal to background ratio is mandatory. In this article, the determination of the MAGNEX spectrometer background contribution on cross section measurements is presented by applying a suitable analysis to quantify the limits of the adopted particle identification technique. The method is discussed considering the 116Cd(20Ne,20O)116Sn Double Charge Exchange reaction data, however it can be applied to any other reaction channel of interest.

Abstract

Background: Heavy-ion induced two-nucleon transfer reactions are powerful tools to reveal peculiar aspects of the atomic nucleus, such as pairing correlations, single-particle and collective degrees of freedom, and more. Also, these processes are in competition with the direct meson exchange in the double charge exchange reactions, which have recently attracted great interest due to their possible connection to neutrinoless double-beta decay. In this framework, the exploration of two-nucleon transfer reactions in the 20Ne+116Cd collision at energies above the Coulomb barrier is particularly relevant since the 116Cd nucleus is a candidate for the double-beta decay. Methods: We measured the excitation energy spectra and absolute cross sections for the two reactions using the MAGNEX large acceptance magnetic spectrometer to detect the ejectiles. We performed direct coupled reaction channels and sequential distorted wave Born approximation calculations using the double folding S\~ao Paulo potential to model the initial and final state interactions. The spectroscopic amplitudes for two- and singleparticle transitions were derived by different nuclear structure approaches: microscopic large-scale shell model, interacting boson model-2 and quasiparticle random phase approximation. Results: The calculations are able to reproduce the experimental cross sections for both two-neutron and twoproton transfer reactions. The role of couplings with the inelastic channels are found to be important in the two-proton transfer case. A competition between the direct and the sequential process is found in the reaction mechanism. For the two-proton transfer case, the inclusion of the 1g7/2 and 2d5/2 orbitals in the model space is crucial.

Abstract

The Summit Craters system represents the point of maximum expression of the persistent tectonic activity at Mount Etna Volcano. The Muography of Etna Volcano (MEV) Project began in 2016 as a pilot project for the successive installation of a permanent muographic observatory. It aims to demonstrate the detector's capability to observe density anomalies inside the volcanic edifice and monitor their time evolution. The first muon telescope built by the collaboration and installed at the base of the North-East Crater from August 2017 to October 2019 was already able to get significant results. This work describes the characteristics of the muon-telescope and summarizes the principal outcomes obtained, with a quick look at the current status of the project and future developments.

Abstract

New experimental measurements of charge state distributions produced by a 20Ne10+ beam at 15 MeV/u colliding on various thin solid targets are presented. The use of the MAGNEX magnetic spectrometer enabled measurements of the 8+ charge state down to fractions of a few 10-5. The use of different post-stripper foils located downstream of the main target is explored, showing that low Z materials are particularly effective to shift the charge state distributions towards fully stripped conditions. The dependence on the foil thickness is also studied and discussed.

Abstract

Neutrinoless double beta decay (0v\b{eta}\b{eta}) is considered the best potential resource to access the absolute neutrino mass scale. Moreover, if observed, it will signal that neutrinos are their own anti-particles (Majorana particles). Presently, this physics case is one of the most important research "beyond Standard Model" and might guide the way towards a Grand Unified Theory of fundamental interactions. Since the 0v\b{eta}\b{eta} decay process involves nuclei, its analysis necessarily implies nuclear structure issues. In the NURE project, supported by a Starting Grant of the European Research Council (ERC), nuclear reactions of double charge-exchange (DCE) are used as a tool to extract information on the 0v\b{eta}\b{eta} Nuclear Matrix Elements. In DCE reactions and \b{eta}\b{eta} decay indeed the initial and final nuclear states are the same and the transition operators have similar structure. Thus the measurement of the DCE absolute cross-sections can give crucial information on \b{eta}\b{eta} matrix elements. In a wider view, the NUMEN international collaboration plans a major upgrade of the INFN-LNS facilities in the next years in order to increase the experimental production of nuclei of at least two orders of magnitude, thus making feasible a systematic study of all the cases of interest as candidates for 0v\b{eta}\b{eta}.

Abstract

Neutrinoless double beta decay (0{\nu}\b{eta}\b{eta}) is considered the best potential resource to determine the absolute neutrino mass scale. Moreover, if observed, it will signal that the total lepton number is not conserved and neutrinos are their own anti-particles. Presently, this physics case is one of the most important research beyond Standard Model and might guide the way towards a Grand Unified Theory of fundamental interactions. Since the \b{eta}\b{eta} decay process involves nuclei, its analysis necessarily implies nuclear structure issues. The 0{\nu}\b{eta}\b{eta} decay rate can be expressed as a product of independent factors: the phase-space factors, the nuclear matrix elements (NME) and a function of the masses of the neutrino species. Thus the knowledge of the NME can give information on the neutrino mass scale, if the 0{\nu}\b{eta}\b{eta} decay rate is measured. In the NURE project, supported by a Starting Grant of the European Research Council, nuclear reactions of double charge-exchange (DCE) will be used as a tool to extract information on the \b{eta}\b{eta} NME. In DCE reactions and \b{eta}\b{eta} decay, the initial and final nuclear states are the same and the transition operators have similar structure. Abstract

Background: Double charge exchange (DCE) nuclear reactions have recently attracted much interest as tools to provide experimentally driven information about nuclear matrix elements of interest in the context of neutrinoless double-beta decay. In this framework, a good description of the reaction mechanism and a complete knowledge of the initial and final-state interactions are mandatory. Presently, not enough is known about the details of the optical potentials and nuclear response to isospin operators for many of the projectile-target systems proposed for future DCE studies. Among these, the 20Ne + 76Ge DCE reaction is particularly relevant due to its connection with 76Ge double-beta decay. Purpose: We intend to characterize the initial-state interaction for the 20Ne + 76Ge reactions at 306 MeV bombarding energy and determine the optical potential and the role of the couplings between elastic channel and inelastic transitions to the first low-lying excited states. Methods: We determine the experimental elastic and inelastic scattering cross-section angular distributions, compare the theoretical predictions by adopting different models of optical potentials with the experimental data, and evaluate the coupling effect through the comparison of the distorted-wave Born approximation calculations with the coupled channels ones. Results: Optical models fail to describe the elastic angular distribution above the grazing angle (9.4{\deg}). A correction in the geometry to effectively account for deformation of the involved nuclear systems improves the agreement up to about 14{\deg}. Coupled channels effects are crucial to obtain good agreement at large angles in the elastic scattering cross section.

Abstract

The article describes the main achievements of the NUMEN project together with an updated and detailed overview of the related R&D activities and theoretical developments. NUMEN proposes an innovative technique to access the nuclear matrix elements entering the expression of the lifetime of the double beta decay by cross section measurements of heavy-ion induced Double Charge Exchange (DCE) reactions. Despite the two processes, namely neutrinoless double beta decay and DCE reactions, are triggered by the weak and strong interaction respectively, important analogies are suggested. The basic point is the coincidence of the initial and final state many-body wave-functions in the two types of processes and the formal similarity of the transition operators. First experimental results obtained at the INFN-LNS laboratory for the 40Ca(18O,18Ne)40Ar reaction at 270 MeV, give encouraging indication on the capability of the proposed technique to access relevant quantitative information. The two major aspects for this project are the K800 Superconducting Cyclotron and MAGNEX spectrometer. The former is used for the acceleration of the required high resolution and low emittance heavy ion beams and the latter is the large acceptance magnetic spectrometer for the detection of the ejectiles. The use of the high-order trajectory reconstruction technique, implemented in MAGNEX, allows to reach the experimental resolution and sensitivity required for the accurate measurement of the DCE cross sections at forward angles. However, the tiny values of such cross sections and the resolution requirements demand beam intensities much larger than manageable with the present facility. The on-going upgrade of the INFN-LNS facilities in this perspective is part of the NUMEN project and will be discussed in the article.

Abstract

The MEV project aims at developing a muon telescope expressly designed for the muography of Etna Volcano. In particular, one of the active craters in the summit area of the volcano would be a suitable target for this experiment. A muon tracking telescope with high imaging resolution was built and tested during 2017. The telescope is a tracker based on extruded scintillating bars with WLS fibres and featuring an innovative read-out architecture. It is composed of three XY planes with a sensitive area of \SI{1}{m^2}; the angular resolution does not exceeds \SI{0.4}{\milli\steradian} and the total angular aperture is about $\pm$\SI{45}{\degree}. A special effort concerned the design of mechanics and electronics in order to meet the requirements of a detector capable to work in a hostile environment such as the top of a tall volcano, at a far distance from any facility. The test phase started in January 2017 and ended successfully at the end of July 2017. An extinct volcanic crater (the Monti Rossi, in the village of Nicolosi, about 15km from Catania) is the target of the measurement. The detector acquired data for about 120 days and the preliminary results are reported in this work.

Abstract

The possibility to use a mini-phoswich detector to identify ions in the region of Z ~ 10 is explored in the framework of the NUMEN project. The NUMEN program, aimed at the investigation of the nuclear matrix elements connected to the neutrinoless double beta decay by means of double charge exchange nuclear reactions, foresees very high fluencies, which prevent the use of standard silicon as stop detectors. The need of reasonable radiation hardness, together with a total energy resolution around 2% and a high granularity, makes scintillators possible candidates. Promising results are obtained using an array of plastic + inorganic phoswich scintillators readout by means of Silicon Photo Multipliers.

22. Biological Impacts on Carbon Speciation and Morphology of Sea Spray Aerosol

Abstract

Sea spray aerosol (SSA) can have complex carbon speciation that is affected by biological conditions in the seawater from which it originates. Biologically derived molecules can also interact with other longer-lived organic and inorganic carbon species in the sea surface microlayer and in the process of bubble bursting. An isolated wave channel facility was used to generate sea spray aerosol during a 1 month mesocosm study. Two consecutive phytoplankton blooms occurred, and sea spray aerosol was sampled throughout. Scanning transmission X-ray microscopy coupled with near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (STXM-NEXAFS) was used to determine spatially resolved carbon speciation within individual particles from 0.18 to 3.2 μm. During phytoplankton blooms, coarse-mode particles exhibited an increased abundance of carboxylic acid-rich needlelike structures. The extent of organic enrichment in fine-mode particles correlates with the occurrence of aliphatic-rich organic species, as detected by an intense C 1s σ(C-H)∗ excitation. These aliphatic-rich species had a strong association with graphitic carbon, as detected by a C 1s σ∗ exciton excitation. This enrichment was unique to particles collected in the aerodynamic size range 0.18-0.32 μm and corresponded with the decrease in hygroscopicity. Aliphatic organics can significantly suppress the particle hygroscopicity when they replace salt, thus influencing the effect of sea spray aerosol on light scattering and cloud formation. These results suggest that graphitic carbon is concentrated in the sea surface microlayer during phytoplankton blooms and released through wave action. These results may have implications for radiative transfer and carbon cycling in the ocean-atmosphere system.

Abstract

Two complementary techniques, Scanning Transmission X-ray Microscopy/Near Edge Fine Structure spectroscopy (STXM/NEXAFS) and Scanning Electron Microscopy/Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDX), have been quantitatively combined to characterize individual atmospheric particles. This pair of techniques was applied to particle samples at three sampling sites (ATTO, ZF2, and T3) in the Amazon basin as part of the Observations and Modeling of the Green Ocean Amazon (GoAmazon2014/5) field campaign during the dry season of 2014. The combined data was subjected to k-means clustering using mass fractions of the following elements: C, N, O, Na, Mg, P, S, Cl, K, Ca, Mn, Fe, Ni, and Zn. Cluster analysis identified 12 particle types across different sampling sites and particle sizes. Samples from the remote Amazon Tall Tower Observatory (ATTO, also T0a) exhibited less cluster variety and fewer anthropogenic clusters than samples collected at the sites nearer to the Manaus metropolitan region, ZF2 (also T0t) or T3. Samples from the ZF2 site contained aged/anthropogenic clusters not readily explained by transport from ATTO or Manaus, possibly suggesting the effects of long range atmospheric transport or other local aerosol sources present during sampling. In addition, this data set allowed for recently established diversity parameters to be calculated. All sample periods had high mixing state indices (c) that were 0.5 μm having a Di of ~2.4 and

Abstract

This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to compare physiological, perceptual and biomechanical outcomes between walking on a treadmill and overground surfaces. Five databases (CINAHL, EMBASE, MEDLINE, SPORTDiscus, Web of Science) were searched until September 2022. Included studies needed to be a crossover design comparing biomechanical, physiological, or perceptual measures between motorised-treadmill and overground walking in healthy adults (18–65 years) walking at the same speed (<5% difference). The quality of studies were assessed using a modified Downs and Black Quality Index. Meta-analyses were performed to determine standardised mean difference ± 95% confidence intervals for all main outcome measures. Fifty-five studies were included with 1,005 participants. Relative oxygen consumption (standardised mean difference [95% confidence interval] 0.38 [0.14,0.63]) and cadence (0.22 [0.06,0.38]) are higher during treadmill walking. Whereas stride length (−0.36 [−0.62,-0.11]) and step length (−0.52 [−0.98,-0.06]) are lower during treadmill walking. Most kinetic variables are different between surfaces. The oxygen consumption, spatiotemporal and kinetic differences on the treadmill may be an attempt to increase stability due to the lack of control, discomfort and familiarity on the treadmill. Treadmill construction including surface stiffness and motor power are likely additional constraints that need to be considered and require investigation. This research was supported by an Australian Government Research Training Program (RTP) scholarship. Relative oxygen consumption is greater on a treadmill when compared with overground when walking at similar speeds and needs to be considered when prescribing exercise. Walking on a treadmill results in several biomechanical changes compared to overground that may be related to changes in gait stability. It may be favourable for rehabilitation purposes for people to initially walk on a treadmill due to lower vertical ground reaction force at push-off and lower joint moments at the knee and ankle. L'article se propose de revenir sur l'inscription dite « de la Victoire » (IG XIV 268), trouvée en 1871 par l'archéologue F.S. Cavallari parmi les ruines du Temple G de Sélinonte, identifié par la suite comme un Olympieion. L’inscription mentionne une liste de neuf puissances divines grâce auxquelles les habitants de Sélinonte déclarent obtenir la victoire. L’occasion et la datation de cette dédicace sont malheureusement inconnues, mais le décodage de la logique qui sous-tend l’articulation de cet assemblage divin permet de formuler d’autres amorces de réflexion sur ce document sur lequel plusieurs spécialistes se sont déjà penchés. L'examen du contexte local et la comparaison avec d'autres sources de tradition historico-littéraire grecque montrent que le dénominateur commun à toutes les divinités évoquées par les Sélinontains est précisément leur rapport à la victoire, dans ses différentes déclinaisons, mais aussi à la protection et au contrôle du territoire. L'analyse se concentre ensuite sur la deuxième partie de l'inscription, qui énonce une liste d'actions à accomplir afin de célébrer les dieux qui assurent la protection de la ville ; elle culmine par la dédicace d'objets dans le temple consacré à Apollon sur l’acropole de la cité. Une proposition interprétative sur la nature de ces objets est avancée, reprenant une lecture de l'inscription proposée en 1984 par Carmine Ampolo, mais peu valorisée à ce jour.

Abstract

The KM3NeT Collaboration is building an underwater neutrino observatory at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea consisting of two neutrino telescopes, both composed of a three-dimensional array of light detectors, known as digital optical modules. Each digital optical module contains a set of 31 three inch photomultiplier tubes distributed over the surface of a 0.44 m diameter pressure-resistant glass sphere. The module includes also calibration instruments and electronics for power, readout and data acquisition. The power board was developed to supply power to all the elements of the digital optical module. The design of the power board began in 2013, and several prototypes were produced and tested. After an exhaustive validation process in various laboratories within the KM3NeT Collaboration, a mass production batch began, resulting in the construction of over 1200 power boards so far. These boards were integrated in the digital optical modules that have already been produced and deployed, 828 until October 2023. In 2017, an upgrade of the power board, to increase reliability and efficiency, was initiated. After the validation of a pre-production series, a production batch of 800 upgraded boards is currently underway. This paper describes the design, architecture, upgrade, validation, and production of the power board, including the reliability studies and tests conducted to ensure the safe operation at the bottom of the Mediterranean Sea throughout the observatory's lifespan

Abstract

Les trois monographies de Franz Cumont présentées ici donnent à voir l’homme de terrain. En 1900, avec son frère Eugène, il parcourt les chemins escarpés du Pont et de la Petite Arménie ; en 1907, il explore seul la Syrie, ses sites et ses paysages, dans les pas de l’empereur Julien ; en 1922-23, il découvre, à Doura-Europos, une « Pompéi du désert ». Franz Cumont fait ainsi œuvre de pionnier ; il prend des risques, défriche de nouveaux sujets, met au jour des documents inédits et documente son travail scientifique dans des carnets de voyage, des dessins, des photographies, des copies d’inscriptions, des échanges épistolaires… Ces riches dossiers d’archives, qui ont d’abord nourri ses propres réflexions, permettent aujourd’hui aux spécialistes de son œuvre de restituer sa pensée et ses travaux dans leur contexte, d’en tracer la genèse et la réception, de comprendre les objectifs multiples de ces missions, d’appréhender les réseaux mobilisés, les succès et les impasses… Les illustrations des introductions historiographiques proviennent principalement des archives de Franz Cumont conservées à l’Academia Belgica de Rome.

Il contributo propone un'analisi del ruolo e della funzione che nel processo di costruzione dell’Altro assumono gli oggetti inanimati e i manufatti costruiti dall’uomo. La circostanza presa in esame è relativa a una notizia riportata, nel II sec. della nostra era, nel primo libro della Periegesi di Pausania. In visita nel demo attico di Ramnunte, il Periegeta mette infatti in relazione la vittoria conseguita dagli Ateniesi a Maratona contro i Persiani, nel 490 a.C., e la dedica della statua della divinità greca Nemesis nel santuario locale, scolpita con un blocco di marmo pario che i nemici avevano portato con loro, con il proposito di farne un trofeo, certi che avrebbero avuto la meglio nello scontro. Una tradizione, probabilmente, nata in epoca più tarda, ma che in modo efficace ammonisce dal superamento di limiti, consentiti all’umano, e ricorda l’alternarsi inesorabile delle sorti.

Abstract

The goal of NUMEN project is to access experimentally driven information on Nuclear Matrix Elements (NME) involved in the neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ), by high-accuracy measurements of the cross sections of Heavy Ion (HI) induced Double Charge Exchange (DCE) reactions. The knowledge of the nuclear matrix elements is crucial to infer the neutrino average masses from the possible measurement of the half-life of 00νββ decay and to compare experiments on different isotopes. In particular, the (18O, 18Ne) and (20Ne, 20O) reactions are performed as tools for β+β+ and β-β- decays, respectively. The experiments are performed at INFN - Laboratory Nazionali del Sud (LNS) in Catania using the Superconducting Cyclotron (CS) to accelerate the beams and the MAGNEX magnetic spectrometer to detect the reaction products. The measured cross sections are very low, limiting the present exploration to few selected isotopes of interest in the context of typically low-yield experimental runs. In order to make feasible a systematic study of all the candidate nuclei, a major upgrade of the LNS facility is foreseen to increase the experimental yield of about two orders of magnitude. To this purpose, frontier technologies are going to be developed for both the accelerator and the detection systems. In parallel, advanced theoretical models will be developed to extract the nuclear structure information from the measured cross sections.

Su una stele di marmo bianco ritrovata, alla fine del XIX secolo, nel santuario di Anfiarao ad Oropo in Beozia, è conservato il testo di un’epistola in lingua greca che i consoli romani inviarono ai magistrati, al consiglio e al popolo degli Oropii, per trasmettere l’esito di una controversia presentata al senato romano. Nel 73 a.C. infatti un senatus consultum interviene a dirimere la disputa sorta tra il dio Anfiarao e i pubblicani romani, rappresentati da L. Domizio Enobarbo. Oggetto del contendere sono le terre del santuario, che i pubblicani sostengono non rientrare nei termini della lex locationis, la cui esenzione dal tributo è riservata a quelle dedicate agli dèi immortali. Sulla base, probabilmente, di un’indagine antiquaria sulla tradizione relativa alla figura di Anfiarao, i pubblicani protestano che debba essere concessa loro la fruizione delle terre, dal momento che non a un dio immortale è dedicato il santuario. Sullo sfondo si indovina l’allusione alla vicenda eroica di Anfiarao e alla sua origine mortale. È singolare che in tutto il processo che porta all’emanazione del senatus consultum, il senato non entri mai nel merito della questione sollevata dai pubblicani, se cioè si dovesse o meno considerare Anfiarao un dio e se quindi le sue terre potessero a buon diritto rientrare nelle esenzioni previste dalla lex locationis. La questione viene risolta a livello istruttorio, riportando prima l’estratto della lex locationis che elencava le tipologie di territori esenti dal versamento del tributo ai pubblicani; poi il decreto sillano dell’86 a.C. che stabiliva la tutela riservata, in esecuzione di un voto, proprio alle terre del santuario della Beozia e per finire l’escerto di ratifica di un senatus consultum dell’80 a.C.. Sulla base di questi elementi, il Senato emette parere favorevole all’esenzione delle terre degli Oropii dalle disposizioni della lex locationis, confermando sostanzialmente quanto già stabilito nel decreto sillano che qualificava Anfiarao come un dio. Il testo si presta ad essere analizzato attraverso molteplici prospettive: in prima battuta, quella della procedura che portava all’emanazione di un senatus consultum e dell’autorità di quelli precedentemente resi; in secondo luogo, quello della trasmissione della delibera in contesti di lingua greca e della loro visibilità e ricezione in loco; e per finire, quella della competenza del senato romano rispetto alle questione di carattere religioso. On a white marble stele found at the end of the 19th century, in the sanctuary of Anfiarao in Oropo in Boeotia, there is the text of an epistle in Greek that the Roman consuls sent to the magistrates, the council and the people of the Oropii, to transmit the outcome of a dispute presented to the Roman Senate. In 73 BC in fact a senatus consultum intervenes to settle the dispute that arose between the god Anfiarao and the Roman tax collectors, represented by L. Domizio Enobarbus. The subject of the dispute is the lands of the sanctuary, which the publicans claim does not fall under the terms of the lex locationis, whose exemption from the tax is reserved for those dedicated to the immortal gods. Probably based on an antiquarian investigation into the tradition relating to the figure of Anfiarao, the tax collectors protest that they should be allowed the use of the lands, since the sanctuary is not dedicated to an immortal god. In the background you can guess the allusion to the heroic story of Anfiarao and his mortal origin. It is singular that in the whole process that leads to the enactment of the senatus consultum, the senate never enters into the merits of the question raised by the tax collectors, that is, whether or not Anfiarao should be considered a god and if therefore his lands could rightfully re-enter in the exemptions provided for by the lex locationis. The issue is resolved at the preliminary level, first reporting the extract of the lex locationis which listed the types of territories exempt from paying tax to tax collectors; then the Sillan decree of 86 BC which established the protection reserved, in execution of a vote, precisely to the lands of the sanctuary of Boeotia and to finish the ratification of a senatus consultum of 80 BC. On the basis of these elements, the Senate issues an opinion in favor of the exemption of the lands of the Oropii by the provisions of the lex locationis, substantially confirming what was already established in the Silla decree which qualified Anfiarao as a god. The text lends itself to being analyzed from multiple perspectives: firstly, that of the procedure that led to the issuance of a senatus consultum and the authority of those previously rendered; secondly, that of the transmission of the resolution in Greek-speaking contexts and of their visibility and reception on the spot; and finally, that of the competence of the Roman senate with respect to questions of a religious nature.

L'episodio racconta la visita degli ambasciatori greci alla corte di Gelone, tiranno di Siracusa, che giunsero in Sicilia per chiedere il suo aiuto contro l'imminente attacco dei persiani. Un riesame del dialogo tra gli ambasciatori e il siracusano permette una reinterpretazione della frase finale con cui Gelone congeda gli ambasciatori greci, diversa da quella che si ritrova nei commenti ad Erodoto. The article offers a rereading of the epilogue of the Sicilian logos, included in the Seventh book of the Histories of Herodotus. The episode relates the visit of the Greek ambassadors at the court of Gelon, tyrant of Syracuse. They arrived in Sicily to request his help against the imminent attack of the Persians. A re-examination of the dialogue between the ambassadors and the Syracusan allows us to propose a reinterpretation of the final sentence by which Gelon dismisses the Greek ambassadors, different from that usually accepted by Herodotus’ commentaries.
