Abstract

Antibodies to capsular polysaccharides and pilus proteins develop in recovering adults., Immunization of nonpregnant adults could help prevent invasive group B Streptococcus (GBS) infections, but adult immune responses have not been investigated. We defined capsular polysaccharide (CPS) and pilus island (PI) surface antigen distribution and expression and immune responses to GBS infection in nonpregnant adults. Prospective surveillance from 7 hospitals in Houston, Texas, USA, identified 102 adults with GBS bacteremia; 43% had skin/soft tissue infection, 16% bacteremia without focus, and 12% osteomyelitis. CPS-specific IgG was determined by ELISA and pilus-specific IgG by multiplex immunoassay. CPS types were Ia (24.5%), Ib (12.7%), II (9.8%), III (16.7%), IV (13.7%), and V (12.7%); 9.8% were nontypeable by serologic methods. Pili, expressed by 89%, were most often PI-2a. CPS and pilus-specific IgG increased during convalescence among patients with strains expressing CPS or PI. All GBS expressed CPS or PI; 79% expressed both. Increased antibodies to CPS and PI during recovery suggests that GBS bacteremia in adults is potentially vaccine preventable.

Abstract

Biochemical characterization of cholinesterase activity (ChE) was carried out on the Antarctic scallop Adamussium colbecki collected in winter 2000 from Campo Icaro (Ross Sea, Antarctica) in order to increase its suitability as a sentinel organism for monitoring the Antarctic environment. The digestive gland, gills and adductor muscle were investigated for substrate specificity and inhibitors sensitivity using acetylthiocholine iodide (ASCh) and butyrylthiocholine iodide (BSCh) as substrates and tetra (monoisopropyl)pyrophosphor-tetramide (Iso-OMPA), 1,5-bis(4-allyldimethylammoniumphenyl)-penthan-3-one dibromide (BW284c51) and the insecticide chlorpyrifos as inhibitors. Effect of in vivo exposure to ZnCl2 was also investigated. All the tissues expressed ChE activity (gill > adductor muscle > digestive gland) and low substrates specificity throughout the hydrolysis of both ASCh and BSCh substrates. Partial (25–29%) and total inhibition (100%) of ChE activity in gills was demonstrated following in vitro incubation with Iso-OMPA and BW284c51 (3 mM), respectively. Concentration-dependent inhibition was also evident with chlorpyrifos in the range 10-4–10-10 M (IC50 10-6) while in vivo exposure to ZnCl2 did not seem to affect ChE activity in the scallop. The potential use of ChE in the A. colbecki as biomarker for monitoring water contamination in the marine Antarctic environment is discussed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

An inquiry, by the "Duplicate Portion" technique, has been made to estimate the daily assimilation of cadmium in various collectivities of Rome, representative of different economical-social and sanitary realities. At this regard, 132 complete meals, coming from a hospital canteen, a nursing home for old people, a big company, a community of students and an agricultural firm, have been examined. The sample has been mineralized to white ashes and analyzed in spectrophotometry at A.A. with a little oven of graphite. The data about cadmium assimilation, that we have obtained, are included between 12 and 25 micrograms/day and they are placed at medium-low levels, if we compare then with an assimilation of 15-60 micrograms/day, carried from studies on various populations. No daily data exceeded the limit of tolerability of 57-71 micrograms/day suggested from the W.H.O. Our data, coming the point, do not indicate a particular situation of danger for the groups of population we have studied.

Abstract

This study compares the effects of different waste water treatments using sodium hypochlorite, chlorine dioxide and ozone on some chemical and biological parameters. The samples studied were obtained from an activated sludge treatment plant of the urban effluents of a large city and from a mixed urban and industrial waste sewage (treated only by sedimentation). A bacterial mutagenicity test (Ames test), microbiological examinations (coliforms, fecal streptococci and coliphages), determinations of the principal chemical parameters and of some organic micropollutants (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons - PAH -, and volatile haloderivatives - VHO -) were carried out on the effluents both before and after disinfection. The results showed that all treated and untreated samples were not mutagenic and that only ozone was able to reduce the concentration of all the examined organic micropollutants. Treatment with hypochlorite decreased only PAH concentration, even though their halogenated derivatives and trihalomethanes were formed. Trihalomethanes were found generally in lower concentrations after disinfections with chlorine dioxide. Hypochlorite showed a good bactericidal activity, but a little viricidal activity, whereas chlorine dioxide and ozone had a very good disinfectant activity both on bacterial and viral forms.
