1. Multiwavelength Observations of the Blazar Mrk 421 in December 2002 and January 2003

Abstract

We report on a multiwavelength campaign on the TeV gamma-ray blazar Markarian (Mrk) 421 performed during December 2002 and January 2003. These target of opportunity observations were initiated by the detection of X-ray and TeV gamma-ray flares with the All Sky Monitor (ASM) on board the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) and the 10 m Whipple gamma-ray telescope.The campaign included observational coverage in the radio (University of Michigan Radio Astronomy Observatory), optical (Boltwood, La Palma KVA 0.6m, WIYN 0.9m), X-ray (RXTE pointed telescopes), and TeV gamma-ray (Whipple and HEGRA) bands. At TeV energies, the observations revealed several flares at intermediate flux levels, peaking between 1 and 1.5 times the flux from the Crab Nebula. While the time averaged spectrum can be fitted with a single power law of photon index Gamma =2.8, we find some evidence for spectral variability. Confirming earlier results, the campaign reveals a rather loose correlation between the X-ray and TeV gamma-ray fluxes. In one case, a very strong X-ray flare is not accompanied by a comparable TeV gamma-ray flare. Although the source flux was variable in the optical and radio bands, the sparse sampling of the optical and radio light curves does not allow us to study the correlation properties in detail. We present a simple analysis of the data with a synchrotron-self Compton model, emphasizing that models with very high Doppler factors and low magnetic fields can describe the data., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

Abstract

Following the detection of strong TeV gamma-ray flares from the BL Lac object 1ES 1959+650 with the Whipple 10 m Cherenkov telescope on May 16 and 17, 2002, we performed intensive Target of Opportunity (ToO) radio, optical, X-ray and TeV gamma-ray observations from May 18, 2002 to August 14, 2002. Observations with the X-ray telescope RXTE and the Whipple and HEGRA gamma-ray telescopes revealed several strong flares, enabling us to sensitively test the X-ray/gamma-ray flux correlation properties. Although the X-ray and gamma-ray fluxes seemed to be correlated in general, we found an ``orphan'' gamma-ray flare that was not accompanied by an X-ray flare. After describing in detail the radio (UMRAO, VLA), optical (Boltwood, Abastumani), X-ray (RXTE) and gamma-ray (Whipple, HEGRA) light curves and Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) we present initial modeling of the SED with a simple Synchrotron Self-Compton (SSC) model. With the addition of another TeV blazar with good broadband data, we consider the set of all TeV blazars to begin to look for a connection of the jet properties to the properties of the central accreting black hole thought to drive the jet. Remarkably, the temporal and spectral X-ray and gamma-ray emission characteristics of TeV blazars are very similar, even though the masses estimates of their central black holes differ by up to one order of magnitude., Comment: Accepted for Publication in the ApJ on October 2nd, 2003

Abstract

Abstract Stakeholder participation is lauded as a key component of successful fisheries management, but few studies have characterized and assessed this participation. Using integrated data digitization and coding methods, this paper tests out a new method to analyze archived management proposals submitted to Alaska's Board of Fish and explores whether this approach can be used to assess stakeholder participation and success rates in Cook Inlet, Bristol Bay, and Southeast Alaska from 2000 to 2015. Abstract

We report results from an intensive multiwavelength monitoring campaign on the TeV blazar Mrk 421 over the period of 2003 - 2004. The source was observed simultaneously at TeV energies with the Whipple 10 m telescope and at X-ray energies with the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) during each clear night within the Whipple observing windows. Supporting observations were also frequently carried out at optical and radio wavelengths to provide simultaneous or contemporaneous coverages. The large amount of simultaneous data has allowed us to examine the variability of Mrk 421 in detail, including cross-band correlation and broadband spectral variability, over a wide range of flux. The variabilities are generally correlated between the X-ray and gamma-ray bands, although the correlation appears to be fairly loose. The light curves show the presence of flares with varying amplitudes on a wide range of timescales at both X-ray and TeV energies. Of particular interest is the presence of TeV flares that have no coincident counterparts at longer wavelengths, because the phenomenon seems difficult to understand in the context of the proposed emission models for TeV blazars. We have also found that the TeV flux reached its peak days before the X-ray flux did during a giant flare (or outburst) in 2004 (with the peak flux reaching similar to 135mcrab in X-rays, as seen by the RXTE ASM, and similar to 3 crab in gamma rays). Such a difference in the development of the flare presents a further challenge to both the leptonic and hadronic emission models. Mrk 421 varied much less at optical and radio wavelengths. Surprisingly, the normalized variability amplitude in the optical seems to be comparable to that in the radio, perhaps suggesting the presence of different populations of emitting electrons in the jet. The spectral energy distribution of Mrk 421 is seen to vary with flux, with the two characteristic peaks moving toward higher energies at higher fluxes. We have failed to fit

Abstract

We conducted a daily monitoring campaign on Mrk 421 in 2003 and 2004 with the Whipple 10 m telescope and the large-area instruments aboard RXTE, simultaneously covering TeV and X-ray energies. Supporting observations at optical and radio wavelengths were also frequently carried out. Mrk 421 was observed over a wide range of fluxes (with a dynamic range of ∼30 both at TeV and X-ray energies). The source was relatively quiet in 2003 but became unusually active in 2004, with flares reaching peak fluxes of ∼80 mCrab in X-rays and >3 Crab at TeV energies! We will describe the multiwavelength campaign and present some preliminary results. Abstract

BL Lacertaehas been the target of four observing campaigns by the Whole Earth Blazar Telescope (WEBT) collaboration. In this paper we present ${\it UBVRI}$light curves obtained by the WEBT from 1994 to 2002, including the last, extended BL Lac 2001 campaign. A total of about 7500 optical observations performed by 31 telescopes from Japan to Mexico have been collected, to be added to the ~$15\,600$observations of the BL Lac Campaign 2000. All these data allow one to follow the source optical emission behaviour with unprecedented detail. The analysis of the colour indices reveals that the flux variability can be interpreted in terms of two components: longer-term variations occurring on a few-day time scale appear as mildly-chromatic events, while a strong bluer-when-brighter chromatism characterizes very fast (intraday) flares. By decoupling the two components, we quantify the degree of chromatism inferring that longer-term flux changes imply moving along a ~$ 0.1$bluer-when-brighter slope in the $B-R$versus Rplane; a steeper slope of ~$ 0.4$would distinguish the shorter-term variations. This means that, when considering the long-term trend, the B-band flux level is related to the R-band one according to a power law of index ~$ 1.1$. Doppler factor variations on a “convex" spectrum could be the mechanism accounting for both the long-term variations and their slight chromatism.

38. ‘Mildly Eccentric’: Brian Friel's Writings for the Irish Timesand the New Yorker

Abstract

The conventional view of Brian Friel's career portrays him as a struggling writer whose first stories appeared in the New Yorkerin late 1959. After briefly producing a small body of finely crafted, albeit conventional, short stories, he devoted himself to writing plays full-time after the phenomenal success of Philadelphia, Here I Come!(1964). This traditional interpretation of Friel's career also relies upon the assertion that the young writer also turned away from prose because of his inability to break free of the genre's constricting conventions, which were imposed both by foreign editors demanding nostalgic portrayals of rural Ireland and, as first argued by Ulf Dantanus, by Friel's own ‘failure to free himself’ from the influence of Frank O'Connor. This article challenges our view of Friel's early career in several ways. First and foremost, it uncovers a trove of seventy six previously unknown ‘essay/stories’ that he wrote for The Irish Timesbetween September 1957 and May 1962, short experimental pieces that force the reader to question her/his assumptions about the form and content of Friel's early career. Second, when contextualized among his uncollected stories for the New Yorkerand the Irish Press, we recognize a radically different story writer than previously described in the criticism.

41. “THE INEFFACEABLE CURSE OF CAIN”: RACE, MISCEGENATION, AND THE VICTORIAN STAGING OF IRISHNESS

Abstract

THROUGHOUT THE NINETEENTH CENTURY both the English popular and scientific communities increasingly argued for a distinct racial difference between the Irish Celt and the English Saxon, which conceptually undermined the Victorian attempt to form a single kingdom from the two peoples. The ethnological discourse concerning Irish identity was dominated by English theorists who reflect their empire’s ideological necessity; thus, the Celt and Saxon were often described as racial siblings early in the nineteenth century when union seemed possible, while later descriptions of the Irish as members of a distant or degenerate race reflect the erosion of public sympathy caused by the era of violence following the failed revolt of 1848. Amid this deluge of scientific discourse, the Irish were treated as mute objects of analysis, lacking any opportunity for formal rejoinder; nonetheless, these essentially English discussions of racial identity and Irishness also entered into the Irish popular culture.

42. Clinical improvement in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy after inferior myocardial infarction

Abstract

In cases of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, the pathophysiologic role of the systolic pressure gradient across the left ventricular outflow tract is the subject of continued controversy. A patient with this disorder is described whose symptoms and provokable intraventricular gradient disappeared after inferior myocardial infarction. Diastolic left ventricular pressures were essentially unchanged, the isovolumic relaxation period became prolonged and the ejection fraction decreased from 0.77 to 0.61 after infarction. The peak ejection rate was unchanged, but the disappearance of systolic anterior motion of the mitral valve leaflet and obstructive manifestations may have resulted from enlarged mid to late systolic ventricular volumes. This case suggests a direct relation between symptoms and intraventricular pressure gradient in certain patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

Abstract

The pressure of pericardial constraint was measured in 20 patients undergoing elective cardiac surgery (10 in Group I with normal cardiac size; 10 in Group II with cardiomegaly) using a catheter with a collapsible latex end balloon. Right atrial pressure and other hemodynamic variables including right ventricular stroke work index were also measured before and after the pericardium was widely opened. The pericardium was grossly normal in all patients and only small physiologic effusions were present.

44. Mnemonic Techniques Used by College Students in Paired-Associate Learning

Abstract

9 categories of mnemonic techniques college students would employ in paired-associate learning were delineated. No significant differences were found between men and women by category of memory aids, and the 9 categories of memory aids were divided into two major classifications. The primary aids accounted for 59% of the memory aids reported and were evenly distributed (about 15%) among first letter, imagery, phonetic clustering, and simple repetition. The remaining 41% were evenly distributed (about 8%) among the secondary aids of semantic clustering, other, descriptive story, personal experience, and mediation. There was a significant difference in total percentages of memory aids between the primary and secondary classifications but not within the classifications.

Abstract

College students reported 8 categories of memory aids that they would employ in learning a serial task. Although no significant differences were found between males and females by category of memory aids reported, there was a significant difference among categories. First letters and simple repetition accounted for 48% of all memory aids, while the remaining 52% were divided almost evenly among imagery, descriptive story, mediation, other, phonetic clustering, and semantic clustering. Clearly, the first-letter technique was the most popular mnemonic associated with the serial task.
