Conventional photogrammetry faces challenges with non-textured, transparent, or reflective surfaces, affecting accurate 3D modeling, particularly in forensic documentation. This study evaluates improvements using lower exposure, exposure bracketing, and RAW format for better 3D modeling of non-textured surfaces. Two bodies were photographed under controlled conditions to assess techniques for non-textured surfaces, with a comparison set for textured surfaces. The experiments were conducted in an autopsy room with a Nikon D5500 camera, adjusting for low exposure, exposure bracketing, RAW format, and increased photo redundancy. Models with Meshroom (Alicevision). Our focus was on visual plausibility rather than quantitative metrics. Results indicated that using RAW format with exposure bracketing and low exposure significantly improved 3D models by reducing artificial edges seen with standard JPG images, despite some noise. A redundant series of RAW photos further reduced edge artifacts and noise, demonstrating the effectiveness of averaging photos to enhance model quality. However, these modifications showed marginal improvements on textured surfaces, underscoring their significant benefits primarily for non-textured surfaces. This study highlights the potential of modified photogrammetry techniques in forensic science, particularly for documenting challenging surfaces. It points out the need for further research, given its limitations in sample size and the absence of extensive parameter testing and quantitative analysis.

Contemporary documentation of a car with bullet defects after a shooting incident can secure the usual tracks and gunshot residue, take photographs, and use trajectory rods and probes. Since the advent of the ”XXL-CT -Scanner” (Fraunhofer Institute, Germany), we have wondered if the advantages of volume scanning CT, already noted for forensic pathology, could be applied to cars. To this end, we damaged a small 3D-printed car model with an electric drill and added CT -dense material with a soldering iron, simulating linearly configured defect morphologies with metal particles. This model was CT -scanned and the resulting data visualized to illustrate how these visualizations can support reconstructive visualization of trajectories. Performing a real XXL-CT scan of a bullet-riddled car requires extensive preparation, transportation, and other logistical measures that are costly and time-consuming. Nonetheless, we suggest that this is a worthwhile research direction to explore.

Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is an important public health issue. In young persons aged between 1 and 40 years, most SCDs are caused by potentially inherited cardiac diseases, often not detectable during conventional medico-legal investigations and therefore termed as sudden unexplained deaths (SUD). In this study, we describe the implementation, feasibility and importance of a standardized procedure to investigate SUD cases within the forensic framework at the Zurich Institute of Forensic Medicine in Switzerland. This new approach involves a multidisciplinary collaboration including forensic autopsy, second pathology expert opinion, post-mortem molecular genetic testing, cardiac counselling of relatives, and a tentative financing. This procedure is in line with the published Swiss and European recommendations on the management of SCDs. During a two-year pilot project, 39 sudden and unexpected death cases were collected, whereof 10 deceased remained without any identifiable cause of death after medico-legal investigation and second expert evaluation. Molecular autopsy, including 393 genes involved in cardio-vascular and metabolic diseases, identified eight pathogenic or likely pathogenic genetic variants in five out of the 10 deceased (50%). Cardio-genetic follow-up investigations in the families of the 10 deceased revealed phenotype-positive relatives in four families and required specific therapies, including an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) for primary prevention. Multidisciplinary collaboration is crucial for an optimal management of sudden unexplained death cases, to identify additional relatives at risk, and to prevent other tragic deaths within a family.

The distribution of bullet fragments inside the body can provide information for the reconstruction of events in shooting incidents. The formation of an annular distribution pattern of bullet fragments was recently presented in a case report. The fragments were scattered radially around an exit-re-entrance wound resulting from collision of the bullet with a floor tile immediately after perforating the body. Such an annular distribution pattern of bullet fragments around an exit-re-entrance wound would indicate that a body was in close contact with hard material, for instance, lying on hard ground or leaning against a concrete wall, when the shot was fired. The aim of this experimental study was to investigate the formation and reproducibility of the annular distribution pattern of bullet fragments. It was assumed that the distribution pattern would be formed when hard material blocks a bullet from exiting a soft tissue simulant. Furthermore, the dependency of this distribution pattern on the impact angle was assessed. For this purpose, .357 Magnum bullets were fired at ballistic soap blocks with a steel plate at the rear end of the soap block. Six shots were performed at an impact angle of 90° (experiment 1), and six shots were performed at an impact angle of 45° (experiment 2). The distribution pattern of the fragments inside the individual soap blocks was examined via computed tomography (CT). In experiment 1, the bullets burst, and large fragments formed annular distribution patterns with a radial extent of approximately 4.9 cm and a maximum depth of approximately 2.3 cm. In experiment 2, the bullets ricocheted from the steel plate, and tiny fragments formed small annular distribution patterns at the points of ricochet with a radial extent of approximately 1.5 cm and a maximum depth of approximately 1.2 cm. Objectives: To investigate the magnetic properties of different types of projectiles and qualify the metal artefact reduction technique for diagnostic and/or forensic MRI. Materials and methods: Ten different projectiles embedded in ordnance gelatine blocks underwent an in vitro 1.5-T MR study with seven sequences including a recently developed metal artefact reduction sequence (Advanced WARP) combining VAT (view-angle-tilting) and SEMAC (slice-encoding metal-artefact-correction). Resulting image quality (five-point scale: 1=best; 5=worst) was scored. Quantifiable magnetic characteristics were correlated with qualitative rating of the MR sequences and torque dislodgment. Results: Metal artefact reduction sequence (median: 2.5) significantly (p < 0.001) improves depiction of projectiles in comparison to all other MR pulse sequences (median: 4.75). Images from diamagnetic composed bullets (median: 2) are much less disturbed compared to magnetic attracted ones (median: 5). Correlation (0.623) between deflection angle measurement (ferromagnetic mean 84.2°; paramagnetic 62°; diamagnetic mean 0°) and median qualitative image quality was highly significant (p = 0.027). Torque dislodgement was distinct for elongated magnetic attracted projectiles. Conclusions: Significant improvement of MR imaging of projectiles using metal artefact reduction techniques has important implications for diagnostic/forensic work-up. The correlations between magnetic attraction force, deflection-angle results and image properties demonstrate that the MR safety of projectiles can be estimated with one of these methods. Purpose: Ferromagnetic bullets can move in air or gelatin in magnetic resonance (MR) units. According to our experience, ferromagnetic bullets do not always present consistent movement. We examined factors affecting ferromagnetic projectile movement in a 1.5T and a 3T MR unit, focusing in this study on the steel-jacketed Swiss ordnance ammunition 7.5mm GP11 Suisse. Methods: Five 7.5mm GP11 Suisse bullets were embedded horizontally and vertically in 10% ordnance gelatin phantoms. Before and after exposing the bullets to 1.5T (Siemens) and 3T (Philips) MR units each bullet's position was documented by a CT scan. In a second phase, the magnetic polarization of the bullets in relation to the MR units was measured by a dry magnetic portable compass (Suunto). Results: Our results showed that the displacement of the bullets increased when subjected to a stronger magnetic field (max. Movement 1.5T: 24.4mm vs. 3T: 101.5mm) and that the position, i.e. orientation of the bullet toward the gantry, strongly influenced its mobility (horizontally embedded projectiles showed poor movement, vertically placed ones strong movement). One of the bullets presented a 180° rotation in the 3T MR unit. Magnetization and changing of the polarization of these ferromagnetic bullets is possible when subjected to MR units. Conclusion: In conclusion, the location of a bullet, and its orientation toward the gantry must be taken into account when assessing the risk of performing an MR examination on a gunshot victim in clinical and in forensic cases.

The computed tomography (CT) scan of a 19-year-old man who died from an occipito-frontal gunshot wound presented an impressive radiating fracture line where the entire sagittal suture burst due to the high intracranial pressure that arose from a near-contact shot from a 9 mm bullet fired from a Glock 17 pistol. Photorealistic depictions of the radiating fracture lines along the cranial bones were created using three-dimensional reconstruction methods, such as the novel cinematic rendering technique that simulates the propagation and interaction of light when it passes through volumetric data. Since the brain had collapsed, depiction of soft tissue was insufficient on CT images. An additional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination was performed, which enabled the diagnostic assessment of cerebral injuries.

While the visualization of gunshot injuries so far focused on solid metal density in routine forensic post mortem computed tomography (PMCT) as well as in micro-computed tomography, gunshot residue (GSR) as dispersed metal particles typically succumbs to partial volume effect. A case series of seven contact shots to the head was evaluated to determine a density range for GSR with at least three times higher likelihood than encountering bone, skin, muscle or blood. For that, a Bayesian likelihood was determined from normal distributions of the CT-densities of blood, bone, skin, muscle and GSR as identified in correlation with visual evidence. Resulting transfer functions matched ring and cone shaped GSR deposits as published elsewhere, thus representing a plausible result. Only fast and plausibly specific visualization is suitable for routine use in forensic PMCT, to allow the examination of GSR in real cases on a wider scale.

This case report describes medicolegal examinations of a decedent with a fatal gunshot wound. The decedent lied on the floor as a bullet was fired into his chest. Computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were performed as part of the judicial investigation. The MRI examination was valuable for delineating the wound channel through the left ventricle, which was deemed the main cause for internal bleeding and fatal blood loss. The diagnostic value of CT for the detection of injuries was low in this case. However, CT allowed for the virtual investigation of bullet fragments. According to CT-based dual-energy index calculations, it could be inferred that the fragments were most likely made of lead matching .357 Magnum R–P cartridges that were found at the scene. The bullet fragments were located underneath the skin at the suspected exit wound. The exit wound was actually an exit-re-entrance wound, as it can be assumed that the fragments re-entered the body after the bullet burst from hard ground upon exiting the body of the decedent, who was lying on the floor. CT visualized an uncommon annular distribution pattern for the bullet fragments surrounding the exit-re-entrance wound. The formation of such an annular distribution pattern of bullet fragments and the relevant conclusions that may be drawn from such a distribution pattern are discussed in this article.
