Abstract

Hybrid integrated diode lasers have so far been realized using silicon, polymer, and silicon nitride (Si3N4) waveguide platforms for extending on-chip tunable light engines from the infrared throughout the visible range. Here we demonstrate the first hybrid integrated laser using the aluminum oxide (Al2O3) deep-UV capable waveguide platform. By permanently coupling low-loss Al2O3 frequency-tunable Vernier feedback circuits with GaN double-pass amplifiers in a hermetically sealed housing, we demonstrate the first extended cavity diode laser (ECDL) in the near UV. The laser shows a maximum fiber-coupled output power of 0.74 mW, corresponding to about 3.5 mW on chip, and tunes more than 4.4 nm in wavelength from 408.1 nm to 403.7 nm. Integrating stable, single-mode and tunable lasers into a deep-UV platform opens a new path for chip-integrated photonic applications., Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

In this paper, which is of programmatic rather than quantitative nature, we aim to further delineate and sharpen the future potential of the LISA mission in the area of fundamental physics. Given the very broad range of topics that might be relevant to LISA, we present here a sample of what we view as particularly promising directions, based in part on the current research interests of the LISA scientific community in the area of fundamental physics. We organize these directions through a "science-first" approach that allows us to classify how LISA data can inform theoretical physics in a variety of areas. For each of these theoretical physics classes, we identify the sources that are currently expected to provide the principal contribution to our knowledge, and the areas that need further development. The classification presented here should not be thought of as cast in stone, but rather as a fluid framework that is amenable to change with the flow of new insights in theoretical physics., Comment: 22 pages, 1 figure, to appear in General Relativity and Gravitation

Abstract

We investigate high-order harmonic generation (HHG) from noble gas clusters in a supersonic gas jet. To identify the contribution of harmonic generation from clusters versus that from gas monomers, we measure the high-order harmonic output over a broad range of the total atomic number density in the jet (from 3*10^16 cm^{-3} to 3x10^18 cm{-3}) at two different reservoir temperatures (303 K and 363 K). For the firrst time in the evaluation of the harmonic yield in such measurements, the variation of the liquid mass fraction, g, versus pressure and temperature is taken into consideration, which we determine, reliably and consistently, to be below 20% within our range of experimental parameters. By comparing the measured harmonic yield from a thin jet with the calculated corresponding yield from monomers alone, we find an increased emission of the harmonics when the average cluster size is less than 3000. Using g, under the assumption that the emission from monomers and clusters add up coherently, we calculate the ratio of the average single-atom response of an atom within a cluster to that of a monomer and find an enhancement of around 10 for very small average cluster size (~200). We do not find any dependence of the cut-off frequency on the composition of the cluster jet. This implies that HHG in clusters is based on electrons that return to their parent ions and not to neighbouring ions in the cluster. To fully employ the enhanced average single-atom response found for small average cluster sizes (~200), the nozzle producing the cluster jet must provide a large liquid mass fraction at these small cluster sizes for increasing the harmonic yield. Moreover, cluster jets may allow for quasi-phase matching, as the higher mass of clusters allows for a higher density contrast in spatially structuring the nonlinear medium., Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

For exploring the application potential of coherent soft x-ray (SXR) and extreme ultraviolet radiation (XUV) provided by high-harmonic generation, it is important to characterize the central output parameters. Of specific importance are pulse-to-pulse (shot-to-shot) fluctuations of the high-harmonic output energy, fluctuations of the direction of the emission (pointing instabilities), and fluctuations of the beam divergence and shape that reduce the spatial coherence. We present the first single-shot measurements of waveguided high-harmonic generation in a waveguided (capillary-based) geometry. Using a capillary waveguide filled with Argon gas as the nonlinear medium, we provide the first characterization of shot-to-shot fluctuations of the pulse energy, of the divergence and of the beam pointing. We record the strength of these fluctuations vs. two basic input parameters, which are the drive laser pulse energy and the gas pressure in the capillary waveguide. In correlation measurements between single-shot drive laser beam profiles and single-shot high-harmonic beam profiles we prove the absence of drive laser beam-pointing-induced fluctuations in the high-harmonic output. We attribute the main source of high-harmonic fluctuations to ionization-induced nonlinear mode mixing during propagation of the drive laser pulse inside the capillary waveguide.

6. High precision wavelength estimation method for integrated optics

Abstract

A novel and simple approach to optical wavelength measurement is presented in this paper. The working principle is demonstrated using a tunable waveguide micro ring resonator and single photodiode. The initial calibration is done with a set of known wavelengths and resonator tunings. The combined spectral sensitivity function of the resonator and photodiode at each tuning voltage was modeled by a neural network. For determining the unknown wavelengths, the resonator was tuned with a set of heating voltages and the corresponding photodiode signals are collected. The unknown wavelength was estimated, based on the collected photodiode signals, the calibrated neural networks, and an optimization algorithm. The wavelength estimate method provides a high spectral precision of about 8 pm (5*10^(-6) at 1550 nm) in the wavelength range between 1549 nm to 1553 nm. A higher precision of 5 pm (3*10^(-6)) is achieved in the range between 1550.3 nm to 1550.8 nm, which is a factor of five improved compared to a simple lookup of data. The importance of our approach is that it strongly simplifies the optical system and enables optical integration. The approach is also of general importance, because it may be applicable to all wavelength monitoring devices which show an adjustable wavelength response., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures

7. Mapping individual electromagnetic field components inside a photonic crystal

Abstract

We present a method to map the absolute electromagnetic field strength inside photonic crystals. We apply the method to map the electric field component Ez of a two-dimensional photonic crystal slab at microwave frequencies. The slab is placed between two mirrors to select Bloch standing waves and a subwavelength spherical scatterer is scanned inside the resulting resonator. The resonant Bloch frequencies shift depending on the electric field at the position of the scatterer. To map the electric field component Ez we measure the frequency shift in the reflection and transmission spectrum of the slab versus the scatterer position. Very good agreement is found between measurements and calculations without any adjustable parameters., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

We have performed ultrafast pump-probe experiments on a GaAs-AlAs microcavity with a resonance near 1300 nm in the "original" telecom band. We concentrate on ultimate-fast optical switching of the cavity resonance that is measured as a function of pump-pulse energy. We observe that at low pump-pulse energies the switching of the cavity resonance is governed by the instantaneous electronic Kerr effect and is achieved within 300 fs. At high pump-pulse energies the index change induced by free carriers generated in the GaAs start to compete with the electronic Kerr effect and reduce the resonance frequency shift. We have developed an analytic model which predicts this competition in agreement with the experimental data. Our model includes a new term in the intensity-dependent refractive index that considers the effect of the probe pulse intensity, which is resonantly enhanced by the cavity. We calculate the effect of the resonantly enhanced probe light on the refractive index change induced by the electronic Kerr effect for cavities with different quality factors. By exploiting the linear regime where only the electronic Kerr effect is observed, we manage to retrieve the nondegenerate third order nonlinear susceptibility for GaAs from the cavity resonance shift as a function of pump-pulse energy., Comment: 31 pages, 8 figures

We report on the spectral properties of a diode laser with a tunable external cavity in integrated optics. Even though the external cavity is short compared to other small-bandwidth external cavity lasers, the spectral bandwidth of this tunable laser is as small as 25 kHz (FWHM), at a side-mode suppression ratio (SMSR) of 50 dB. 10. Modeling of mode-locking in a laser with spatially separate gain media

Abstract

We present a novel laser mode-locking scheme and discuss its unusual properties and feasibility using a theoretical model. A large set of single-frequency continuous-wave lasers oscillate by amplification in spatially separated gain media. They are mutually phase-locked by nonlinear feedback from a common saturable absorber. As a result, ultra short pulses are generated. The new scheme offers three significant benefits: the light that is amplified in each medium is continuous wave, thereby avoiding issues related to group velocity dispersion and nonlinear effects that can perturb the pulse shape. The set of frequencies on which the laser oscillates, and therefore the pulse repetition rate, is controlled by the geometry of resonator-internal optical elements, not by the cavity length. Finally, the bandwidth of the laser can be controlled by switching gain modules on and off. This scheme offers a route to mode-locked lasers with high average output power, repetition rates that can be scaled into the THz range, and a bandwidth that can be dynamically controlled. Abstract

In recent experiments ultra-relativistic femtosecond electron bunches were generated by a Laser Wakefield Accelerator (LWFA) in different regimes. Here we predict that even attosecond bunches can be generated by an LWFA due to the fast betatron phase mixing within a femtosecond electron bunch. The attosecond bunches are stable outside the LWFA and can propagate in vacuum many tens of centimeter without significant change in their duration. Our calculations show that evidence for the formation of attosecond bunches can be found in the spectrum of coherent betatron radiation from LWFA's.

Abstract

External injection of electron bunches longer than the plasma wavelength in a laser wakefield accelerator can lead to the generation of femtosecond ultrarelativistic bunches with a couple of percent energy spread. Extensive study has been done on external electron bunch (e.g. one generated by a photo-cathode rf linac) injection in a laser wakefield for different configurations. In this paper we investigate a new way of external injection where the electron bunch is injected at a small angle into the wakefield. This way one can avoid the ponderomotive scattering as well as the vacuum-plasma transition region, which tend to destroy the injected bunch. In our simulations, the effect of the laser pulse dynamics is also taken into account. It is shown that injection at an angle can provide compressed and accelerated electron bunches with less than 2% energy spread. Another advantage of this scheme is that it has less stringent requirements in terms of the size of the injected bunch and there is the potential to trap more charge.

Abstract

Coherent and incoherent electromagnetic radiation emitted from a laser wakefield accelerator is calculated based on Lienard-Wiechert potentials. It is found that at wavelengths longer than the bunch length, the radiation is coherent. The coherent radiation, which typically lies in the infrared range, shows features that reveal details of the acceleration process and properties of the electron bunch, such as its duration, charge, energy, and offset with respect to the wakefield axis. 14. Dynamics of Femtosecond Electron Bunches

Abstract

In the laser wakefield accelerator (LWFA) a short intense laser pulse, with a duration of the order of a plasma wave period, excites an unusually strong plasma wake wave (laser wakefield). Recent experiments on laser wakefield acceleration [Nature (London) 431, p.535, p.538, p.541 (2004)] demonstrated generation of ultra-short (with a duration of a few femtoseconds) relativistic electron bunches with relatively low energy spread of the order of a few percent. We have studied the dynamics of such bunches in vacuum and in laser wakefield. The results show strong bunch dynamics already on a few millimeters propagation distance in both cases. In vacuum, the bunch radius and emittance quickly grow. The latter worsens the focusability of the bunch. We found that when a femtosecond bunch is accelerated in a channel-guided laser wakefield, for realistic bunch lengths, the bunch length is approximately conserved. However, the spread in betatron frequencies leads to fast betatron phase mixing in the bunch envelope for on-axis injection. When bunch is injected in a laser wakefield off-axis, the bunch decoherence results in considerable increase in the normalized bunch emittance, and, in some cases, in increase in the energy spread, after acceleration. 15. Ponderomotive scattering of an electron-bunch before injection into a laser wakefield

Abstract

For the purpose of laser wakefield acceleration, it turned out that also the injection of electron bunches longer than a plasma wavelength can generate accelerated femtosecond bunches with relatively low energy spread. This is of high interest because such injecting bunches can be provided, e.g., by state-of-the-art photo cathode RF guns. Here we point out that when an e-bunch is injected in the wakefield it is important to take into account the ponderomotive scattering of the injecting bunch by the laser pulse in the vacuum region located in front of the plasma. At low energies of the injected bunch this scattering results in a significant drop of the collection efficiency. Larger collection efficiency can by reached with lower intensity laser pulses and relatively high injection energies. Abstract

A numerical study of normal glow discharge properties was performed in the case of small electrodes separations (0.05-0.4 cm) and moderate gas pressures (10-46 Torr). A recently observed new experimental effect of a considerable reduction in the normal current density for smaller discharge lengths was analyzed both by means of 2D fluid model and by a minimal 1D drift model of gas discharge. A good agreement between theoretical and experimental behaviour was demonstrated. Optical frequency combs based on broadband-gain bulk lasers, due to the low intrinsic linewidth and sub-GHz repetition rates, have gained tremendous interest for applications such as high-resolution spectroscopy, dual-comb spectroscopy or LIDAR. However, susceptibility to mechanical and acoustic perturbations, the complexity of optical pumping and the larger physical size of these lasers has motivated research toward chip-based integrated extended cavity diode lasers with low-loss Si3N4 waveguide feedback circuits for low repetition rates. In diode lasers, mode-locking via saturable absorbers is generally used for generating frequency combs, however, the short upper-state carrier lifetime results in repetition rates of at least a few GHz. Here, we demonstrate absorber-free, passive mode-locking as well as hybrid mode-locking at sub-GHz repetition rates using a long Si3N4 feedback circuit with three highly frequency-selective microring resonators for extending the cavity roundtrip length to more than 0.6 m. This enables frequency-domain mode-locking in the form of a continuous wave, with a line spacing of around 500 MHz. Hybrid mode-locking, in addition to passive mode-locking, is demonstrated by adding a weak AC drive current with a frequency close to 500 MHz. This stabilizes the repetition rate and reduces the Gaussian component of the laser’s RF linewidth attaining a negligible Lorentzian component. Our numerical simulations predict that further lowering of the repetition rate and line spacings might be achievable with further cavity length extension.

Abstract

Hybrid integrated diode lasers have so far been realized using silicon, polymer, and silicon nitride (Si3N4) waveguide platforms for extending on-chip tunable light engines from the infrared throughout the visible range. Here we demonstrate the first hybrid integrated laser using the aluminum oxide (Al2O3) deep-UV capable waveguide platform. By permanently coupling low-loss Al2O3 frequency-tunable Vernier feedback circuits with GaN double-pass amplifiers in a hermetically sealed housing, we demonstrate the first extended cavity diode laser (ECDL) in the near UV. The laser shows a maximum fiber-coupled output power of 0.74 mW, corresponding to about 3.5 mW on chip, and tunes more than 4.4 nm in wavelength from 408.1 nm to 403.7 nm. Integrating stable, single-mode and tunable lasers into a deep-UV platform opens a new path for chip-integrated photonic applications.

This enables passive as well as hybrid mode-locking with a low repetition rate of around 484 MHz.

Abstract

We demonstrate the generation of frequency combs with a low repetition rate of 450 MHz, using a hybrid integrated InP-Si3N4 diode laser with more than 60 cm optical roundtrip length on-chip. Comb generation is achieved without a saturable absorber, based on four-wave mixing in combination with gain-index coupling and spectrally filtered feedback; both passive and active mode-locking is observed. External modulation reduces the RF linewidth from several hundreds of kHz to the ten-kHz level.

Abstract

In this paper, which is of programmatic rather than quantitative nature, we aim to further delineate and sharpen the future potential of the LISA mission in the area of fundamental physics. Given the very broad range of topics that might be relevant to LISA, we present here a sample of what we view as particularly promising directions, based in part on the current research interests of the LISA scientific community in the area of fundamental physics. We organize these directions through a "science-first" approach that allows us to classify how LISA data can inform theoretical physics in a variety of areas. For each of these theoretical physics classes, we identify the sources that are currently expected to provide the principal contribution to our knowledge, and the areas that need further development. The classification presented here should not be thought of as cast in stone, but rather as a fluid framework that is amenable to change with the flow of new insights in theoretical physics.

Abstract

Silicon nitride waveguides offer a high nonlinear refractive index and tight mode confinement, ideal for efficient four-wave mixing (FWM) processes. We present a light source for broadband as well as narrowband coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS), with the potential to be set up as an all-integrated device, based on FWM in silicon nitride waveguides. Signal and idler pulses are generated via FWM with only 4 nJ input pulse energy and stimulated using a tunable continuous-wave seed source, such that the idler and residual pump pulses can be used for CARS measurements, enabling chemically-selective label-free imaging across the entire fingerprint region.

Abstract

Aspects of the present disclosure describe improved supercontinuum generation based upon alternating optical dispersion along a waveguide length that advantageously generates much more spectral bandwidth than possible with conventional, prior art techniques without losing coherence as well as supporting a larger range of pulse energies (i.e., for lower than conventionally allowed pulse energies or high pulse energies).

Abstract

A paraxial optical propagation code is developed, which can be combined with various existing models of gain media, to model oscillators with full paraxial wave propagation within the resonator. The diffraction losses are a considerable part of the single-pass cavity loss for free-electron laser for infrared experiments (FELIX ) and it is shown that a resonator with hole coupling might be a viable alterative to a standard resonator with transmissive optics for the high gain vacuum ultraviolet free-electron laser (VUV-FEL) oscillator.
