Professional school counselors are charged with preparing students to be college and career ready and students may depend on their school counselor to provide them with a comprehensive plan for post-secondary options. Unfortunately, even with adequate access to academic knowledge and skills, not all students may be career and college ready due to the lack of confidence in their ability to succeed. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the self-efficacy of high school graduates regarding their preparedness to succeed in a post-secondary education. Using a univariate of analysis of variance, the data collected from a sample of 154 college students were analyzed. Results indicated that when it comes to positive personal characteristics, Asian American students had statistically lower scores. Additional analysis also revealed that students from rural schools had lower academic competence regarding their self-efficacy. The article presents implications for school counselors, school counselors in-training, and counseling programs.

Matched field processing (MFP) is an established technique for source localization in known multipath acoustic environments. Unfortunately, in many situations, imperfect knowledge of the actual propagation environment and sidelobes due to modal interference prevent accurate propagation modeling and source localization via MFP. To suppress the sidelobes and improve the method’s robustness, a linear frequency-difference matched field processing (LFDMFP) method for estimating the source range is proposed. A two-neighbor-frequency high-order cross-spectrum between the measurement and the replica of each hydrophone of the vertical line array is first computed. The cost function can then be derived from the dual summation or double integral of the high-order cross-spectrum with respect to the depth of the hydrophones and the candidate sources of the replicas, where the range that corresponds to the minimum is the optimal estimation. Because of the larger modal interference distances, LFDMFP can efficiently provide only one optimal range within the same range search interval rather than some conventional matched field processing. The efficiency of the presented method was verified using simulations and experiments. The LFDMFP unambiguously estimated the source range in two experimental datasets with average relative errors of 2.2 and 1.9%.

Categorical (either binary or ordinal) quantitative traits are widely observed to measure count and resistance in plants. Unlike continuous traits, categorical traits often provide less detailed insights into genetic variation and possess a more complex underlying genetic architecture, which presents additional challenges for their genome-wide association studies. Meanwhile, methods designed for binary or continuous phenotypes are commonly used to inappropriately analyze ordinal traits, which leads to the loss of original phenotype information and the detection power of quantitative trait nucleotides (QTN). To address these issues, fast multi-locus ridge regression (FastRR), which was originally designed for continuous traits, is used to directly analyze binary or ordinal traits in this study. FastRR includes three stages of continuous transformation, variable reduction, and parameter estimation, and it can computationally handle categorical phenotype data instead of link functions introduced or methods inappropriately used. A series of simulation studies demonstrate that, compared with four other continuous or binary or ordinal approaches, including logistic regression, FarmCPU, FaST-LMM, and POLMM, the FastRR method outperforms in the detection of small-effect QTN, accuracy of estimated effect, and computation speed. We applied FastRR to 14 binary or ordinal phenotypes in the Arabidopsis real dataset and identified 479 significant loci and 76 known genes, at least seven times as many as detected by other algorithms. These findings underscore the potential of FastRR as a very useful tool for genome-wide association studies and novel gene mining of binary and ordinal traits.

Ceramizable silicone rubber (CSR) composed of silicone rubber matrix and inorganic fillers can be transformed into a dense flame-retardant ceramic upon encountering high temperatures or flames. Conventionally, CSR can be sintered into a dense ceramic at temperatures above 1000 °C, which is higher than the melting point of a copper conductor used in a power cable. In this study, the vulcanization process and mass ratio of inorganic fillers of CSR were studied to lower its ceramization temperature to 950 °C. The electrical and mechanical properties of CSRs and their ceramic bulks were studied with various ratios of wollastonite and muscovite. It was found that the CSR samples could be successfully fabricated using a two-step vulcanization technique (at 120 °C and 150 °C, respectively). As a high ratio of muscovite filler was introduced into the CSR, the sample presented a high dc electrical resistivity of 6.713 × 1014 Ω·cm, and a low dielectric constant of 4.3 and dielectric loss of 0.025 at 50 Hz. After the thermal sintering (at 950 °C for 1 h) of the CSR sample with a high ratio of muscovite, the ceramic sample exhibits a dense microstructure without any pores. The ceramic also demonstrates excellent insulating properties, with a volume resistivity of 8.69 × 1011 Ω·cm, and a low dielectric loss of 0.01 at 50 Hz. Meanwhile, the three-point bending strength of the ceramic sample reaches a value of 110.03 MPa. This study provides a potential route to fabricate CSR used for fire-resistant cables.

Abstract Chemoradiation is a common therapeutic regimen for human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC). However, not all patients benefit from chemotherapy, especially patients with low-risk characteristics. We aim to develop and validate a prognostic and predictive radiomic image signature (pRiS) to inform survival and chemotherapy benefit using computed tomography (CT) scans from 491 stage I and II HPV-associated OPSCC, which were divided into three cohorts D1–D3. The prognostic performance of pRiS was evaluated on two test sets (D2, n = 162; D3, n = 269) using concordance index. Patients from D2 and D3 who received either radiotherapy alone or chemoradiation were used to validate pRiS as predictive of added benefit of chemotherapy. Seven features were selected to construct pRiS, which was found to be prognostic of overall survival (OS) on univariate analysis in D2 (hazard ratio [HR] = 2.14, 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.1–4.16, p = 0.02) and D3 (HR = 2.74, 95% CI, 1.34–5.62, p = 0.006). Chemotherapy was associated with improved OS for high-pRiS patients in D2 (radiation vs chemoradiation, HR = 4.47, 95% CI, 1.73–11.6, p = 0.002) and D3 (radiation vs chemoradiation, HR = 2.99, 95% CI, 1.04–8.63, p = 0.04). In contrast, chemotherapy did not improve OS for low-pRiS patients, which indicates these patients did not derive additional benefit from chemotherapy and could be considered for treatment de-escalation. The proposed radiomic signature was prognostic of patient survival and informed benefit from chemotherapy for stage I and II HPV-associated OPSCC patients.

IntroductionEpistasis is currently a topic of great interest in molecular and quantitative genetics. Arabidopsis thaliana, as a model organism, plays a crucial role in studying the fundamental biology of diverse plant species. However, there have been limited reports about identification of epistasis related to flowering in genome-wide association studies (GWAS). Therefore, it is of utmost importance to conduct epistasis in Arabidopsis.MethodIn this study, we employed Levene’s test and compressed variance component mixed model in GWAS to detect quantitative trait nucleotides (QTNs) and QTN-by-QTN interactions (QQIs) for 11 flowering-related traits of 199 Arabidopsis accessions with 216,130 markers.ResultsOur analysis detected 89 QTNs and 130 pairs of QQIs. Around these loci, 34 known genes previously reported in Arabidopsis were confirmed to be associated with flowering-related traits, such as SPA4, which is involved in regulating photoperiodic flowering, and interacts with PAP1 and PAP2, affecting growth of Arabidopsis under light conditions. Then, we observed significant and differential expression of 35 genes in response to variations in temperature, photoperiod, and vernalization treatments out of unreported genes. Functional enrichment analysis revealed that 26 of these genes were associated with various biological processes. Finally, the haplotype and phenotypic difference analysis revealed 20 candidate genes exhibiting significant phenotypic variations across gene haplotypes, of which the candidate genes AT1G12990 and AT1G09950 around QQIs might have interaction effect to flowering time regulation in Arabidopsis.DiscussionThese findings may offer valuable insights for the identification and exploration of genes and gene-by-gene interactions associated with flowering-related traits in Arabidopsis, that may even provide valuable reference and guidance for the research of epistasis in other species.

Nocturnal scratching substantially impairs the quality of life in individuals with skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis (AD). Current clinical measurements of scratch rely on patient-reported outcomes (PROs) on itch over the last 24 h. Such measurements lack objectivity and sensitivity. Digital health technologies (DHTs), such as wearable sensors, have been widely used to capture behaviors in clinical and real-world settings. In this work, we develop and validate a machine learning algorithm using wrist-wearing actigraphy that could objectively quantify nocturnal scratching events, therefore facilitating accurate assessment of disease progression, treatment effectiveness, and overall quality of life in AD patients. A total of seven subjects were enrolled in a study to generate data overnight in an inpatient setting. Several machine learning models were developed, and their performance was compared. Results demonstrated that the best-performing model achieved the F1 score of 0.45 on the test set, accompanied by a precision of 0.44 and a recall of 0.46. Upon satisfactory performance with an expanded subject pool, our automatic scratch detection algorithm holds the potential for objectively assessing sleep quality and disease state in AD patients. This advancement promises to inform and refine therapeutic strategies for individuals with AD.

Green huajiao has a unique flavor and is widely used in cooking as an edible spice. In this study, the intensity of overall aroma and aroma attributes of seven green huajiao samples from the Sichuan and Chongqing regions were evaluated using a dynamic dilution olfactometer and ranking descriptive analysis (RDA) technology. The volatile compounds and major aroma components were determined by GC-MS in combination with odor activity value (OAV) analysis. The partial least squares regression (PLSR) model was further used to identify the key aromas contributing to the aroma sensory attributes. Seven green huajiao samples were categorized into three groups: (1) huajiao samples from Liangshan have a strong intensity of pungent, floral and herbal aromas and a medium-high intensity of sweet aroma, and the key contributing aroma compounds were α-pinene, sabinene, β-pinene, myrcene, ocimene and linalool; (2) huajiao samples from Panzhihua and Hongya have a strong intensity of citrusy, lemony and minty aromas, and the key contributing aroma compound was linalool; and (3) the huajiao sample from the Chongqing region was categorized into a separate group and was characterized by a medium-high intensity of green, minty and sweet aromas, and the main aroma compounds are ocimene, citronellal and α-terpineol. These results provide useful basic data for evaluating the aroma quality and analyzing the key aroma characteristics of green huajiao in the Sichuan and Chongqing regions.

Abstract In mobile machinery, hydro-mechanical pumps are increasingly replaced by electronically controlled pumps to improve the automation level, but diversified control functions (e.g., power limitation and pressure cut-off) are integrated into the electronic controller only from the pump level, leading to the potential instability of the overall system. To solve this problem, a multi-mode electrohydraulic load sensing (MELS) control scheme is proposed especially considering the switching stability from the system level, which includes four working modes of flow control, load sensing, power limitation, and pressure control. Depending on the actual working requirements, the switching rules for the different modes and the switching direction (i.e., the modes can be switched bilaterally or unilaterally) are defined. The priority of different modes is also defined, from high to low: pressure control, power limitation, load sensing, and flow control. When multiple switching rules are satisfied at the same time, the system switches to the control mode with the highest priority. In addition, the switching stability between flow control and pressure control modes is analyzed, and the controller parameters that guarantee the switching stability are obtained. A comparative study is carried out based on a test rig with a 2-ton hydraulic excavator. The results show that the MELS controller can achieve the control functions of proper flow supplement, power limitation, and pressure cut-off, which has good stability performance when switching between different control modes. This research proposes the MELS control method that realizes the stability of multi-mode switching of the hydraulic system of mobile machinery under different working conditions.

Abstract Structure has been considered to play an important role in photocatalytic performance of the semiconductors, but the intrinsic factors were rarely revealed. Herein, ZnO nanomaterials in the structures of thin film, nanowire array and nanosheet array were synthesized, and their structural characteristics, optical properties, photocurrent response and photocatalytic efficiency were compared with each other for illustrating the issue. The photoluminescence intensity decreased in the order of nanosheets, thin film and nanowires for improved lifetime of the photoexcited charges. The absorption of the nanosheets and nanowires improved obviously in the visible range with a redshift of the absorption edge than that of the thin film. The nanowires possessed the highest response current of 82.65 μA at a response time of 2.0 ms in a sensitivity of 87.93 at the light frequency of 1 Hz, and gained the largest catalytic efficiency of 2.45 μg/cm2 h for the methylene blue degradation in UV light. Nevertheless, the improvement of catalytic efficiency of the nanosheets (up to 42.4%) was much larger than that of nanowires (5.7%) and thin film (2.6%) for the Au coating. The analysis revealed that the photocatalytic efficiency of the ZnO nanomaterials was modulated by the structure as it contained different surface area, roughness, defect and doping states, vacancies, polar and non-polar crystalline faces, which would provide structural design of semiconductor nanomaterials for the photoelectric and photocatalytic applications.

Open-ended questions can be used in food sensory analysis. Generally, evaluators are required to describe the sensory features of a set of products in their own words, in order to understand how consumers’ perception of the main features of products. It can also be combined with preference surveys to explore the factors that drive product preferences and purchase decisions of consumers. This article introduces the definition of open-ended questions, implementation, data pre-processing, data analysis, application in food research, advantages and limitations of this method and its comparison with other rapid descriptive analysis methods, and looking ahead to the development prospect of this method with a view to providing reference for companies or scientific researchers in related fields who need product sensory analysis.

IntroductionQuantitative trait nucleotide (QTN)-by-environment interactions (QEIs) play an increasingly essential role in the genetic dissection of complex traits in crops as global climate change accelerates. The abiotic stresses, such as drought and heat, are the major constraints on maize yields. Multi-environment joint analysis can improve statistical power in QTN and QEI detection, and further help us to understand the genetic basis and provide implications for maize improvement.MethodsIn this study, 3VmrMLM was applied to identify QTNs and QEIs for three yield-related traits (grain yield, anthesis date, and anthesis-silking interval) of 300 tropical and subtropical maize inbred lines with 332,641 SNPs under well-watered and drought and heat stresses.ResultsAmong the total 321 genes around 76 QTNs and 73 QEIs identified in this study, 34 known genes were reported in previous maize studies to be truly associated with these traits, such as ereb53 (GRMZM2G141638) and thx12 (GRMZM2G016649) associated with drought stress tolerance, and hsftf27 (GRMZM2G025685) and myb60 (GRMZM2G312419) associated with heat stress. In addition, among 127 homologs in Arabidopsis out of 287 unreported genes, 46 and 47 were found to be significantly and differentially expressed under drought vs well-watered treatments, and high vs. normal temperature treatments, respectively. Using functional enrichment analysis, 37 of these differentially expressed genes were involved in various biological processes. Tissue-specific expression and haplotype difference analysis further revealed 24 candidate genes with significantly phenotypic differences across gene haplotypes under different environments, of which the candidate genes GRMZM2G064159, GRMZM2G146192, and GRMZM2G114789 around QEIs may have gene-by-environment interactions for maize yield.DiscussionAll these findings may provide new insights for breeding in maize for yield-related traits adapted to abiotic stresses.

This study combined gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and odor activity value (OAV) assessments to analyze the volatile ingredient changes in formula powder during 11 months of storage at room temperature. Orthogonal partial least squares-discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA) and variable importance in projection (VIP) were also used to assess the potential indicators of aroma changes during storage. The aim was to expose the possible changes in the aroma profile and the substances that alter infant formula (IF) aroma during storage. The results showed that the aldehyde and ketone content in the milk formula increased as the storage time was extended, while the lactone and terpenoid levels decreased significantly. The OAV indicated the presence of various major aromatic substances at different storage times. Considering consumer concern regarding product flavor, this study ascertained that monitoring substance changes during storage showed that 2-heptanone was a good indicator of milk flavor, dimethyl disulfide was a suitable indicator of protein degradation, and 3-methylbutanal, heptanal, hexanal, pentanal, and octanal were all good indicators of fat oxidation. The results of previous related studies were used to supplement the data in this work regarding the changes in IF during product shelf life and to provide support for controlling the flavor substances and quality during new product development.

The global climate shows an obvious warming trend, and the impact on water resources is increasing. Abrupt temperature change and warming hiatus are two important states of temperature change. The quantitative impacts of temperature change and warming hiatus on surface runoff remain unclear. Based on the measured runoff data from 60 representative hydrological stations in China from 1956 to 2016 and the Water Balance Model developed by the Research Center for Climate Change (RCCC-WBC), this paper analyzes the quantitative impacts of abrupt temperature change and warming hiatus on surface runoff. The results showed that the effects of three types of abrupt temperature changes on runoff in different basins in China are significantly different. The effects of abrupt temperature changes and warming stagnation on runoff in northern China are greater than those in southern China, and the effects of abrupt temperature changes and warming stagnation on runoff in the upper, middle, and lower reaches of the same basin are also different. Before the abrupt change in temperature, the influence of temperature on the surface runoff was less than 9%, and the influence of temperature on the runoff in some southern areas was weaker, only affecting less than 3% of the runoff. When the temperature changes abruptly, the influence of air temperature on the surface runoff in a small part of the arid region is up to 30%. The abrupt change in mean maximum temperature has both positive and negative driving effects on runoff in China, and the negative driving effect is concentrated in the areas with abrupt warming, affecting about 8% of the runoff on average. The average influence of abrupt mean temperature change on runoff in China is about 10%, and the area with a large influence on runoff change is concentrated in the area north of 40° N. The abrupt change in temperature in the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River Basin has a great influence on the runoff change, up to 13%. The maximum impact of abrupt mean minimum temperature on runoff is concentrated in Northeast China, ranging from 9% to 12%. During the period of temperature stagnation, air temperature and runoff showed an obvious reverse trend. During this period, the average negative influence of drastic changes in air temperature on runoff was about 15%, but precipitation and runoff still maintained a good consistency, which may be due to the effect of other influencing factors which offset the negative driving effect of air temperature.

Abrupt temperature changes and warming hiatuses have a great impact on socioeconomic systems; however, their mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, the quantitative mechanisms of the responses of abrupt seasonal temperature changes and warming hiatuses in China to their influencing factors were analysed using the monthly mean temperature (Tav), mean minimum temperature (Tnav), and mean maximum temperature (Txav) from 622 meteorological stations in China covering 1951–2018, the CMIP6 model data, and data at large spatial scales, including Atlantic multidecadal oscillation (AMO) data. The results showed that the contributions of the influencing factors to the abrupt changes in Tav, Tnav, and Txav showed large spatial variability and peaked in the spring and summer and bottomed out in the autumn. The Pacific decadal oscillation (PDO) greatly impacted the abrupt temperature changes in Northeast China and North China at a contribution rate of approximately 12%, strongly influenced the abrupt temperature changes south of the Yangtze River, and markedly influenced the abrupt temperature changes in Northwest China. The AMO had a large impact on temperature in most regions of China in all seasons except for the summer. The MEI mainly affected the abrupt seasonal temperature changes in the region between 25° N and 35° N. The Arctic oscillation (AO) substantially impacted the warming hiatuses in Northeast China in the winter at a contribution rate of approximately 12%. These influencing factors contributed less to warming hiatuses than to abrupt temperature changes. Among the regional influencing factors, AP and WS greatly impacted warming hiatuses, more so than abrupt temperature changes, while relative humidity (RH) and solar radiation (SR) contributed little to warming hiatuses.

Multi-view spectral clustering (MVSC) has become a popular approach to harvest knowledge about group information from multiple views of data, owned by different parties. A high quality MVSC approach usually requires collecting massive amount of data from each view party, in order to perform MVSC algorithm in a centralized manner. However, such centralized MVSC approach raises serious privacy concerns, not only in terms of the sensitivity property of many real-world data such as medical or financial records, but also in terms of the regulations from authorities to preclude centralized operations. Hence it is crucial to design new paradigm for training spectral clustering model on multi-view data in industrial scenarios. In this article, we propose a distributed and secure framework named Federated Multi-view Spectral Clustering (FMSC), in which a group of view parties collaboratively perform a MVSC model, but couldn't learn the data of other participants. FMSC is inspired by the concept of federated learning, and utilize Homomorphic Encryption (HE) and Differential Privacy (DP) to achieve secure and private clustering. We conduct a series of extensive experiments to verify the effectiveness of FMSC on both synthetic and real-world datasets. Evaluations show that FMSC achieves respectable clustering results over conventional centralized approaches.

The postharvest shelf life of fresh corn largely depends on the packaging method and storage temperature. This study investigated the effect of vacuum packaging (VP) with high-barrier (HB) or ordinary (OR) nylon/nylon/polypropylene (PP) composite films and the impact of storage temperature (4, 25, and 38 °C) on the shelf life of fresh corn. The sensory quality and color changes of the corn were evaluated, indicating a significant improvement in the glossiness (GL), sourness (SO), and color changes compared to corn packaged using OR films. The results showed that the HB films preserved corn freshness under refrigerated and normal temperature storage conditions, delaying color changes and SO development. A shelf-life model was established based on the Arrhenius equation. The predicted values of the corn at different temperatures were compared with the experimental data, indicating that the model could accurately predict the shelf life. The shelf life observed via sensory evaluation was more than 50% shorter than the results obtained by instrumental measurements. Therefore, sensory evaluation could be applied to determine shelf life and avoid food waste.

The uneven water resource distribution between different areas across the globe has been worsening. The area where the eastern margin of the Asian westerly jet area meets the low-altitude area of the transition zone (which has a temperate continental monsoon climate) is delicate and sensitive to climate change. An urgent issue is to determine the climate change pattern of this area in the past. On the basis of core samples of four tree species in four typical regions of this joint area, we built a standardized chronological table according to tree-ring width and reconstructed the cumulative precipitation from March to August series in the above area in the past 203–343 years. Since the reconstructed results corresponded well to climate events and drought and flooding periods in historical records, the reconstructed model was stable and reliable. The results were as follows: The precipitation in the study area from east to the west in the growth season has changed dramatically, and the period has gradually shortened. In the 19th century, there was a wet period in the high-latitude area. From the 19th century to the 1950s, the entire study area experienced a significant dry period that lasted for 20–45 years; the starting time of the dry period was gradually delayed from the west to the middle, and the wet period gradually grew shorter at an increasing rate. In the past half-century, this area experienced a significant drought period, and the drying rate was higher in the west and east regions than in the central region. In the past two centuries, the precipitation varied significantly in the study area, and the wet period played a dominant role, growing gradually shorter. The middle and west regions of the Asian westerly jet area and the high-latitude regions of the transition zone all experienced significant wetting or drying processes in the first half of the 19th century, and since then, all areas experienced significant drying processes under the influence of global warming, which may be intensified by the westerly circulation.

PurposeThere is a lack of biomarkers for accurately prognosticating outcome in both human papillomavirus-related (HPV+) and tobacco- and alcohol-related (HPV−) oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC). The aims of this study were to i) develop and evaluate radiomic features within (intratumoral) and around tumor (peritumoral) on CT scans to predict HPV status; ii) investigate the prognostic value of the radiomic features for both HPV− and HPV+ patients, including within individual AJCC eighth edition-defined stage groups; and iii) develop and evaluate a clinicopathologic imaging nomogram involving radiomic, clinical, and pathologic factors for disease-free survival (DFS) prediction for HPV+ patients.Experimental DesignThis retrospective study included 582 OPSCC patients, of which 462 were obtained from The Cancer Imaging Archive (TCIA) with available tumor segmentation and 120 were from Cleveland Clinic Foundation (CCF, denoted as SCCF) with HPV+ OPSCC. We subdivided the TCIA cohort into training (ST, 180 patients) and validation (SV, 282 patients) based on an approximately 3:5 ratio for HPV status prediction. The top 15 radiomic features that were associated with HPV status were selected by the minimum redundancy–maximum relevance (MRMR) using ST and evaluated on SV. Using 3 of these 15 top HPV status-associated features, we created radiomic risk scores for both HPV+ (RRSHPV+) and HPV− patients (RRSHPV−) through a Cox regression model to predict DFS. RRSHPV+ was further externally validated on SCCF. Nomograms for the HPV+ population (Mp+RRS) were constructed. Both RRSHPV+ and Mp+RRS were used to prognosticate DFS for the AJCC eighth edition-defined stage I, stage II, and stage III patients separately.ResultsRRSHPV+ was prognostic for DFS for i) the whole HPV+ population [hazard ratio (HR) = 1.97, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.35–2.88, p < 0.001], ii) the AJCC eighth stage I population (HR = 1.99, 95% CI: 1.04–3.83, p = 0.039), and iii) the AJCC eighth stage II population (HR = 3.61, 95% CI: 1.71–7.62, p < 0.001). HPV+ nomogram Mp+RRS (C-index, 0.59; 95% CI: 0.54–0.65) was also prognostic of DFS (HR = 1.86, 95% CI: 1.27–2.71, p = 0.001).ConclusionCT-based radiomic signatures are associated with both HPV status and DFS in OPSCC patients. With additional validation, the radiomic signature and its corresponding nomogram could potentially be used for identifying HPV+ OPSCC patients who might be candidates for therapy deintensification.
