The Jeans instability is regarded as an important tool for analyzing the dynamics of a self-gravitating system. However, this theory is challenging since astronomical observation data show some Bok globules, whose masses are less than the Jeans mass and still have stars or at least undergo the star formation process. To explain this problem, we investigate the effects of the higher-order generalized uncertainty principle on the Jeans mass of the collapsing molecular cloud. The results in this paper show that the higher order generalized uncertainty principle has a very significant effect on the canonical energy and gravitational potential of idea gas, and finally leads to a modified Jeans mass lower than the original case, which is conducive to the generation of stars in small mass Bok globules. Furthermore, we estimate the new generalized uncertainty principle parameter $\gamma _0$ by applying various data of Bok globules, and find that the range of magnitude of $\gamma _0$ is ${10^{11}} \sim {10^{12}}$., Comment: 7 pages, no figure

The magnetic field structure of a star-forming Bok globule BHR 71 was determined based on near-infrared polarimetric observations of background stars. The magnetic field in BHR 71 was mapped from 25 stars. By using a simple 2D parabolic function, the plane-of-sky magnetic axis of the core was found to be $\theta_{\rm mag} = 125^{\circ} \pm 11^{\circ}$. The plane-of-sky mean magnetic field strength of BHR 71 was found to be $B_{\rm pos} = 8.8 - 15.0$ $\mu$G, indicating that the BHR 71 core is magnetically supercritical with $\lambda = 1.44 - 2.43$. Taking into account the effect of thermal/turbulent pressure and the plane-of-sky magnetic field component, the critical mass of BHR 71 was $M_{\rm cr} = 14.5-18.7$ M$_{\odot}$, which is consistent with the observed core mass of $M_{\rm core} \approx 14.7$ M$_{\odot}$ (Yang et al. 2017). We conclude that BHR 71 is in a condition close to a kinematically critical state, and the magnetic field direction lies close to the plane of sky. Since BHR 71 is a star-forming core, a significantly subcritical condition (i.e., the magnetic field direction deviating from the plane of sky) is unlikely, and collapsed from a condition close to a kinematically critical state. There are two possible scenarios to explain the curved magnetic fields of BHR 71, one is an hourglass-like field structure due to mass accumulation and the other is the Inoue \& Fukui (2013) mechanism, which proposes the interaction of the core with a shock wave to create curved magnetic fields wrapping around the core., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

Isolated dense molecular cores are investigated to study the onset of complex organic molecule formation in interstellar ice. Sampling three cores with ongoing formation of low-mass stars (B59, B335, and L483) and one starless core (L694-2) we sample lines of sight to nine background stars and five young stellar objects (YSOs; A_K ~0.5 - 4.7). Spectra of these stars from 2-5 $\mu$m with NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF) simultaneously display signatures from the cores of H$_2$O (3.0 $\mu$m), CH$_3$OH (C-H stretching mode, 3.53 $\mu$m) and CO (4.67 $\mu$m) ices. The CO ice is traced by nine stars in which five show a long wavelength wing due to a mixture of CO with polar ice (CO$_r$), presumably CH$_3$OH. Two of these sight lines also show independent detections of CH$_3$OH. For these we find the ratio of the CH$_3$OH:CO$_r$ is 0.55$\pm$0.06 and 0.73$\pm$0.07 from L483 and L694-2, respectively. The detections of both CO and CH$_3$OH for the first time through lines of sight toward background stars observationally constrains the conversion of CO into CH$_3$OH ice. Along the lines of sight most of the CO exists in the gas phase and $\leq$15% of the CO is frozen out. However, CH$_3$OH ice is abundant with respect to CO (~50%) and exists mainly as a CH$_3$OH-rich CO ice layer. Only a small fraction of the lines of sight contains CH$_3$OH ice, presumably that with the highest density. The high conversion of CO to CH$_3$OH can explain the abundances of CH$_3$OH ice found in later stage Class 1 low mass YSO envelopes (CH$_3$OH:CO$_r$ ~ 0.5-0.6). For high mass YSOs and one Class 0 YSO this ratio varies significantly implying local variations can affect the ice formation. The large CH$_3$OH ice abundance indicates that the formation of complex organic molecules is likely during the pre-stellar phase in cold environments without higher energy particle interactions (e.g. cosmic rays)., Comment: 26 pages, 7 figures, Accepted for publication by ApJ

The collapse of the protostellar envelope results in the growth of the protostar and the development of a protoplanetary disk, playing a critical role during the early stages of star formation. Characterizing the gas infall in the envelope constrains the dynamical models of star formation. We present unambiguous signatures of infall, probed by optically thick molecular lines, toward an isolated embedded protostar, BHR 71 IRS1. The three dimensional radiative transfer calculations indicate that a slowly rotating infalling envelope model following the "inside-out" collapse reproduces the observations of both HCO$^{+}$ $J=4\rightarrow3$ and CS $J=7\rightarrow6$ lines, and the low velocity emission of the HCN $J=4\rightarrow3$ line. The envelope has a model-derived age of 12000$\pm$3000 years after the initial collapse. The envelope model underestimates the high velocity emission at the HCN $J=4\rightarrow3$ and H$^{13}$CN $J=4\rightarrow3$ lines, where outflows or a Keplerian disk may contribute. The ALMA observations serendipitously discover the emission of complex organic molecules (COMs) concentrated within a radius of 100 au, indicating that BHR 71 IRS1 harbors a hot corino. Eight species of COMs are identified, including CH$_{3}$OH and CH$_{3}$OCHO, along with H$_{2}$CS, SO$_{2}$ and HCN $v_{2}=1$. The emission of methyl formate and $^{13}$C-methanol shows a clear velocity gradient within a radius of 50 au, hinting at an unresolved Keplerian rotating disk., 42 pages, 38 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We describe the results of 3D simulations of the interaction of hydrodynamic shocks with Bonnor-Ebert spheres performed with an Adaptive Mesh Refinement code. The calculations are isothermal and the clouds are embedded in a medium in which the sound speed is either four or ten times that in the cloud. The strengths of the shocks are such that they induce gravitational collapse in some cases and not in others and we derive a simple estimate for the shock strength required for this to occur. These results are relevant to dense cores and Bok globules in star forming regions subjected to shocks produced by stellar feedback., Comment: 9 pages 9 figures

Reflection nebulosity surrounds HD 184982. The medium responsible is apparently related to the nearby Bok globule B335. Thus the star and the globule must lie at similar distances, which according to the Gaia DR2 parallax of HD 184982 is 164.5 pc.

Polarimetric observations of about 50 stars located in a close vicinity of the Bok globule CB67 having significantly nonspherical shape and rapid rotation are performed. The data obtained are compared with the available observations of this globule at radio and submillimeter wavelengths as well as some theoretical calculations. It is found that the elongation and the rotation moment of CB67 are oriented rather perpendicular to the magnetic fields, which is unusual for Bok globules and is difficult to be explained from the theoretical point of view., 8 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables

Although the existence of dark matter is generally accepted by the mainstream scientific community, there is no generally agreed direct detection of it. Also, observations show that some Bok globules are prolate in some regions without suitable explanation for its cause. In this paper, we investigate the effect of dark matter sub-halo in transformation of the Bok globules from spherical to the prolate shape. We limit the investigation to a particular case that the magnetic field and turbulent effects are negligible through the Bok globule. We consider the gravitational effect of dark matter sub-halo on the isothermal Bok globule that is exposed to suitable distance of it. The results show that the dark matter sub-halo can justify the transformation of Bok globules in some regions. In this paper, we introduce a new method for proving the existence of dark matter sub halo.

We performed an observational study of the relation between the interstellar magnetic field alignment and star formation in twenty (20) sky regions containing Bok Globules. The presence of young stellar objects in the globules is verified by a search of infrared sources with spectral energy distribution compatible with a pre main-sequence star. The interstellar magnetic field direction is mapped using optical polarimetry. These maps are used to estimate the dispersion of the interstellar magnetic field direction in each region from a Gaussian fit, sigma_B. In addition to the Gaussian dispersion, we propose a new parameter, eta, to measure the magnetic field alignment that does not rely on any function fitting. Statistical tests show that the dispersion of the magnetic field direction is different in star forming globules relative to quiescent globules. We examine the effects of f(R) gravity on Jeans analysis of collapsing dust clouds. We provide a method for testing modified gravity models by their effects on star formation as the presence of f(R) gravity is found to modify the limit for collapse. In this analysis we add perturbations to a de Sitter background. As the standard Einstein-Hilbert Lagrangian is modified, new types of dynamics emerge. Depending on the characteristics of a chosen f(R) model, the appearance of new limits is possible. The physicality of these limits is further examined. We find the asymptotic Jeans masses for f(R) theories compared to standard Jeans mass. Through this ratio, the effects of the f(R) modified Jeans mass for viable theories are examined in molecular clouds. Bok globules have a mass range comparable to Jeans masses in question and are therefore used for comparing different f(R) models. Viable theories are found to assist in star formation.

We trace the peripheral magnetic field structure of Bok globule CB130, by estimating the linear polarization of its field stars in the R band. The magnetic field orientation sampled by these stars, aligned on average among themselves and the polarization produced within the cloud has a different direction from that of Galactic plane with an offset of 53$^\circ$. The offset between minor axis and the mean magnetic field of CB130 is found to be 80$^\circ$. The estimated strength of the magnetic field in the plane-of-the-sky is $\sim$ 116$\pm$19 $\mu$G. We constructed the visual extinction map using Near Infrared Color Excess (NICE) method to see the dust distribution around CB130. Contours of Herschel {Herschel is an ESA space observatory with science instruments provided by European-led Principal Investigator consortia and with important participation from NASA} SPIRE 500$\mu$m dust continuum emission maps of this cloud is over-plotted on the visual extinction map which shows the regions having higher optical extinction corresponds to higher densities of dust. Three distinct high dust density cores (named as C1, C2, and C3) are identified in the extinction map. It is observed that the cores C1 and C3 located close to two previously known cores CB130-1 and CB130-2 respectively. Estimate of visual extinction of some moderately obscured stars of CB130 are made utilizing near-infra red photometry. Its observed that there is a feeble dependence of polarization on extinction; and polarization efficiency (defined as $ \textit{p}$/A$ {V}$) of the dust grains decreases with the increase in extinction., Comment: Accepted in Astrophysics and Space Science journal (14 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables)

We report the results of optical polarimetric observations of a Bok globule CB34 to study magnetic field structure on large scales ($10^5-10^6$ AU), which is combined with archival sub-mm observations to characterize the magnetic field structure of CB34 on small scales ($10^4 - 10^5$ AU). The optical polarization measurements indicate that the magnetic field in the globule is constrained to a maximum radius of $10^5$AU around the core, out to densities not smaller than $10^4$cm$^{-3}$. Our study is mainly concentrated on two submillimeter cores C1 and C2 of CB34. The direction of magnetic field of core C2 is found to be nearly perpendicular to the CO outflow direction of the globule. The magnetic field of core C1 is almost aligned with the minor axis of the core which is typical for magnetically dominated star formation models. The mean value of offset between the minor axis of core C2 and the outflow direction is found to be $14^\circ$ which suggests that the direction of the outflow is almost aligned with the minor axis of core C2. Shapley gives this ancient parable a modern interpretation of a tortured man struggling to understand his relation to the Universe. “Were you there,” asks G-d, “when I created the stars of the Pleiades or Orion?” The birth of a star is one of the most beautiful and violent processes that our galaxy offers: A long period of dark, impenetrable cloudiness (the specific prenatal cloud is called a Bok globule) is followed by an ignition flash as the nascent Sun begins nuclear fusion. At the end of the process, the new star’s ­surrounding nebulosity quickly burns away.

At the end of the process of birth, the new star’s surrounding nebulosity, called a Bok globule after the astronomer Bart J. Bok (1906–1983), evaporates.

[abridged] The role of magnetic fields in the process of star formation is a matter of continuous debate. Clear observational proof of the general influence of magnetic fields on the early phase of cloud collapse is still pending. First results on Bok globules with simple structures indicate dominant magnetic fields across large spatial scales (Bertrang+2014). The aim of this study is to test the magnetic field influence across Bok globules with more complex density structures. We apply near-infrared polarimetry to trace the magnetic field structure on scales of 10^4-10^5au in selected Bok globules. The combination of these measurements with archival data in the optical and sub-mm wavelength range allows us to characterize the magnetic field on scales of 10^3-10^6au. We present polarimetric data in the near-infrared wavelength range for the three Bok globules CB34, CB56, and [OMK2002]18, combined with archival polarimetric data in the optical wavelength range for CB34 and CB56, and in the sub-millimeter wavelength range for CB34 and [OMK2002]18. We find a strong polarization signal (P>2%) in the near-infrared and strongly aligned polarization segments on large scales (10^4-10^6au) for all three globules. This indicates dominant magnetic fields across Bok globules with complex density structures. To reconcile our findings in globules, the lowest mass clouds known, and the results on intermediate (e.g., Taurus) and more massive (e.g., Orion) clouds, we postulate a mass dependent role of magnetic fields, whereby magnetic fields appear to be dominant on low and high mass but rather sub-dominant on intermediate mass clouds., 7 pages, 6 figures; Accepted by A&A

The NH3(1, 1) line emission was detected at −120 arcsec, +60 arcsec offset from the star Cyg OB2 No. 12. The region had been initially mapped in 13 CO(1–0) and was called clump B. The subsequent detection of the CS(2–1) line by the same authors led them to suggest that the clump could be an object similar to a Bok globule. The present detection and analysis confirm what was proposed before, that is clump B is a newly discovered starless Bok globule.

We used near-infrared 2MASS data to construct visual extinction maps of a sample of Southern Bok globules utilizing the NICE method. We derived radial extinction profiles of dense cores identified in the globules and analyzed their stability against gravitational collapse with isothermal Bonnor-Ebert spheres. The frequency distribution of the stability parameter xi_max of these cores shows that a large number of them are located in stable states, followed by an abrupt decrease of cores in unstable states. This decrease is steeper for globules with associated IRAS point sources than for starless globules. Moreover, globules in stable states have a Bonnor-Ebert temperature of T = 15 +- 6 K, while the group of critical plus unstable globules has a different temperature of T = 10 +- 3 K. Distances were estimated to all the globules studied in this work and the spectral class of the IRAS sources was calculated. No variations were found in the stability parameters of the cores and the spectral class of their associated IRAS sources. On the basis of 13CO J = 1-0 molecular line observations, we identified and modeled a blue-assymetric line profile toward a globule of the sample, obtaining an upper limit infall speed of 0.25 km/s.

We present optical and submillimetre polarimetry data of the Bok globule CB3 and optical polarimetry data of the Bok globule CB246. We use each set of polarimetry data to infer the B-field orientation in each of the clouds. The optical data can only be used in the low density, low extinction edge regions of clouds. The submillimetre data can only be used in the high column-density, central regions of the clouds. It has previously been found that near-infrared polarisation mapping of background stars does not accurately trace the magnetic field in dense cloud regions. This may be due to a lack of aligned grains in dense regions. We test this by comparing the field orientations measured by our two independent polarimetry methods. We find that the field orientation deduced from the optical data matches up well with the orientation estimated from the submillimetre data. We therefore claim that both methods are accurately tracing the same magnetic field in CB3. Hence, in this case, there must be significant numbers of aligned dust grains in the high density region, and they do indeed trace the magnetic field in the submillimetre. We find an offset of 40$\pm$14 degrees between the magnetic field orientation and the short axis of the globule. This is consistent with the mean value of 31$\pm$3 degrees found in our previous work on prestellar cores, even though CB3 is a protostellar core. Taken together, the six prestellar cores that we have now studied in this way show a mean offset between magnetic field orientation and core short axis of $\sim30\pm$3 degrees, in apparent contradiction with some models of magnetically dominated star formation., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The disk-outflow connection is thought to play a key role in extracting excess angular momentum from a forming proto-star. Though jet rotation has been observed in a few objects, no rotation of molecular outflows has been unambiguously reported so far. We report new millimeter-interferometric observations of the edge-on T Tauri star - disk system in the isolated Bok globule CB26. The aim of these observations was to study the disk-outflow relation in this 1Myr old low-mass young stellar object. The IRAM PdBI array was used to observe 12CO(2-1) at 1.3mm in two configurations, resulting in spectral line maps with 1.5 arcsec resolution. We use an empirical parameterized steady-state outflow model combined with 2-D line radiative transfer calculations and chi^2-minimization in parameter space to derive a best-fit model and constrain parameters of the outflow. The data reveal a previously undiscovered collimated bipolar molecular outflow of total length ~2000 AU, escaping perpendicular to the plane of the disk. We find peculiar kinematic signatures that suggest the outflow is rotating with the same orientation as the disk. However, we could not ultimately exclude jet precession or two misaligned flows as possible origin of the observed peculiar velocity field. There is indirect indication that the embedded driving source is a binary system, which, together with the youth of the source, could provide the clue to the observed kinematic features of the outflow. CB26 is so far the most promising source to study the rotation of a molecular outflow. Assuming that the outflow is rotating, we compute and compare masses, mass flux, angular momenta, and angular momentum flux of disk and outflow and derive disk dispersal timescales of 0.5...1 Myr, comparable to the age of the system., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures, to appear in Astronomy & Astrophysics

InfraRed Dark Clouds (IRDCs) are extinction features against the Galactic infrared background, mainly in mid-infrared band. Recently they were proposed to be potential sites of massive star formation. In this work we have made 12CO, 13CO, and C18O (J=1-0) survey of 61 IRDCs, 52 of which are in the first Galactic quadrant, selected from a catalog given by Simon et al. (2006), while the others are in the outer Galaxy, selected by visually inspecting the MSX images. Detection rates in the three CO lines are 90%, 71%, and 62% respectively. The distribution of IRDCs in the first Galactic quadrant is consistent with the 5 kpc molecular ring picture, while slight trace of spiral pattern can also be noticed, which needs to be further examined. The IRDCs have typical excitation temperature of 10 K and typical column density of several 10^{22} cm^{-2}. Their typical physical size is estimated to be several pcs using angular sizes from the Simon catalog. Typical volume density and typical LTE mass are ~5000 cm^{-3} and ~5000 M_{sun} respectively. The IRDCs are in or near virial equilibrium. The properties of IRDCs are similar to those of star forming molecular clumps, and they seem to be intermediate between giant molecular clouds and Bok globules, thus they may represent early stages of massive star formation., Comment: 35 pages, including 4 tables and 12 figures. In a previous paper we demonstrated that nonradial hydrodynamic oscillations of a thermally supported (Bonnor-Ebert) sphere embedded in a low-density, high-temperature medium persist for many periods. The predicted column density variations and molecular spectral line profiles are similar to those observed in the Bok globule B68, suggesting that the motions in some starless cores may be oscillating perturbations on a thermally supported equilibrium structure. Such oscillations can produce molecular line maps which mimic rotation, collapse, or expansion and, thus, could make determining the dynamical state from such observations alone difficult. However, while B68 is embedded in a very hot, low-density medium, many starless cores are not, having interior/exterior density contrasts closer to unity. In this paper we investigate the oscillation damping rate as a function of the exterior density. For concreteness we use the same interior model employed by Broderick et al., with varying models for the exterior gas. We also develop a simple analytical formalism, based on the linear perturbation analysis of the oscillations, which predicts the contribution to the damping rates due to the excitation of sound waves in the external medium. We find that the damping rate of oscillations on globules in dense molecular environments is always many periods, corresponding to hundreds of thousands of years and persisting over the inferred lifetimes of the globules.

In a previous paper, we modeled the oscillations of a thermally-supported (Bonnor-Ebert) sphere as non-radial, linear perturbations following a standard analysis developed for stellar pulsations. The predicted column density variations and molecular spectral line profiles are similar to those observed in the Bok globule B68 suggesting that the motions in some starless cores may be oscillating perturbations on a thermally supported equilibrium structure. However, the linear analysis is unable to address several questions, among them the stability, and lifetime of the perturbations. In this paper we simulate the oscillations using a three-dimensional numerical hydrodynamic code. We find that the oscillations are damped predominantly by non-linear mode-coupling, and the damping time scale is typically many oscillation periods, corresponding to a few million years, and persisting over the inferred lifetime of gobules., 7 pages, 7 figures, accepted by ApJ

We present Spitzer observations of the dark globule CB190 (L771). We observe a roughly circular 24 micron shadow with a 70 arcsec radius. The extinction profile of this shadow matches the profile derived from 2MASS photometry at the outer edges of the globule and reaches a maximum of ~32 visual magnitudes at the center. The corresponding mass of CB190 is ~10 Msun. Our 12CO and 13CO J = 2-1 data over a 10 arcmin X 10 arcmin region centered on the shadow show a temperature ~10 K. The thermal continuum indicates a similar temperature for the dust. The molecular data also show evidence of freezeout onto dust grains. We estimate a distance to CB190 of 400 pc using the spectroscopic parallax of a star associated with the globule. Bonnor-Ebert fits to the density profile, in conjunction with this distance, yield xi_max = 7.2, indicating that CB190 may be unstable. The high temperature (56 K) of the best fit Bonnor-Ebert model is in contradiction with the CO and thermal continuum data, leading to the conclusion that the thermal pressure is not enough to prevent free-fall collapse. We also find that the turbulence in the cloud is inadequate to support it. However, the cloud may be supported by the magnetic field, if this field is at the average level for dark globules. Since the magnetic field will eventually leak out through ambipolar diffusion, it is likely that CB190 is collapsing or in a late pre-collapse stage., 16 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

Highly-collimated outflows are believed to be the earliest stage in outflow evolution, so their study is essential for understanding the processes driving outflows. The BHR71 Bok globule is known to harbour such a highly-collimated outflow, which is powered by a protostar belonging to a protobinary system. Using the APEX telescope on Chajnantor, we mapped the BHR71 highly-collimated outflow in CO(3-2), and observed several bright points of the outflow in the molecular transitions CO(4-3), CO(7-6), 13CO(3-2), C18O(3-2), CH3OH(7-6) and H2CO(4-3). We use an LVG code to characterise the temperature enhancements in these regions. These observations are particularly interesting for investigating the interaction of collimated outflows with the ambient molecular cloud. In our CO(3-2) map, the second outflow driven by IRS2, which is the second source of the binary system, is completely revealed and shown to be bipolar. We also measure temperature enhancements in the lobes. The CO and methanol LVG modelling points to temperatures between 30 and 50 K in the two lobes. The methanol emission in the southern lobe bright knot is barely resolved with the APEX single-dish. ALMA will thus be a central tool to study the shock chemistry in these regions.

Aims.The CS (J = 2-1) line was searched at locations with brightest 13CO (J=1-0) emissions in the region in front of the star Cyg OB2 No. 12. Methods.The observations were made with the 20-m millimeter wave telescope at Onsala using a 1024-channel autocorrelator with a resolution of 50 kHz (0.14 km s-1). Results.The line was detected only in one position (core B) with main beam brightness temperature $T_{\rm MB} = 0.15(2)$ K at $v_{\rm LSR} = 11.4(1)$ km s-1. Conclusions.The line excitation analysis suggests that core B could be a Bok globule in consideration of its morphology, chemistry and physical conditions.

The distance determination of small Bok globules is often difficult because of its small size and opaqueness. In this work, we determine the distances to six small Bok globules CB 17, CB 24, CB 188, CB 224, CB 230 and CB 240 using near infra red photometry (2MASS $JHK_S$ colors). The distances to these clouds are estimated to be $478 \pm 88$, $293 \pm 54$, $262 \pm 49$, $378 \pm 70$, $293 \pm 54$ and $429 \pm 79$ parsec respectively., 20 pages, 13 figures (Accepted in MNRAS)

Inspired by Barnard 68, a Bok globule, that undergoes stable oscillations, we perform multi-phase hydrodynamic simulations to analyze the stability of Bok globules. We show that a high-density soft molecular core, with an adiabatic index $\gamma$ = 0.7 embedded in a warm isothermal diffuse gas, must have a small density gradient to retain the stability. Despite being stable, the molecular core can still collapse spontaneously as it will relax to develop a sufficiently large density gradient after tens of oscillations, or a few $10^7$ years. However, during its relaxation, the core may abruptly collapse triggered by the impingement of small-amplitude, long-wavelength ($\sim$ 6 $-$ 36 pc) sound waves in the warm gas. This triggered collapse mechanism is similar to a sonoluminescence phenomenon, where underwater ultrasounds can drive air bubble coalescence. The collapse configuration is found to be different from both inside-out and outside-in models of low-mass star formation; nonetheless the mass flux is close to the prediction of the inside-out model. The condition and the efficiency for this core collapse mechanism are identified. Generally speaking, a broad-band resonance condition must be met, where the core oscillation frequency and the wave frequency should match each other within a factor of several. A consequence of our findings predicts the possibility of propagating low-mass star formation, for which collapse of cores, within a mass range short of one order of magnitude, takes place sequentially tracing the wave front across a region of few tens of pc over $10^7$ years., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures

We study the polarization efficiency (defined as the ratio of polarization to extinction) of stars in the background of the small, nearly spherical and isolated Bok globule CB4 to understand the grain alignment process. A decrease in polarization efficiency with an increase in visual extinction is noticed. This suggests that the observed polarization in lines of sight which intercept a Bok globule tends to show dominance of dust grains in the outer layers of the globule. This finding is consistent with the results obtained for other clouds in the past. We determined the distance to the cloud CB4 using near-infrared photometry (2MASS JHKS colors) of moderately obscured stars located at the periphery of the cloud. From the extinction-distance plot, the distance to this cloud is estimated to be ($459 \pm 85$) pc., 11 pages, 4 figures; Accepted in Research in Astronomy and Astrophysics (RAA) Journal

Context. The molecular and continuum surveys at NIR and (sub-)mmwavelengths recently performed in the large and distant ( ≥ 1 kpc) Bok globules CB3 and CB34 are the framework of the present paper. With this multi-wavelength approach, it is possible to trace the hot jets and cold outflows driven by the (proto-)stars, to investigate how they interact with the surrounding medium, and to assess that in these globules star formation is a continuous process and not a unique event. Aims. With the present work we continue our survey of a sample of large globules by investigating CB205. The aim is to carefully map the outflow motions and to locate the driving sources. The occurrence of outflows is used to identify the earliest star-forming regions. Methods. Our analysis has been performed through JCMT observations at (sub)millimeter wavelengths of the continuum (850 and 450 μ m) and CO(2–1) and (3–2) line emission. Results. The continuum maps reveal three Class 0 candidates located in the western region of the globule, without NIR counterparts. The line maps show a complex scenario for the high velocity components with different clumps at different velocities. The outflow activity is concentrated around the Class 0 candidates. On the other hand, the NIR objects are associated with lower velocity outflow clumps. Conclusions. The present results confirm that for CB205, star formation is propagating through the globule. The western part hosts the latest formation episode with Class 0 candidates feeding multiple outflows. We suggest that the eastern region, which is associated with a NIR cluster, reflects a later evolutionary phase, when the outflow is fading.

We report the most sensitive water maser survey towards Bok globules to date, using NASA's 70m antenna in Robledo de Chavela (Spain). We observed 207 positions within the CB catalog with a higher probability of harboring a young star, using as selection criteria the presence of radio continuum emission (from submillimeter to centimeter wavelengths), geometrical centers of molecular outflows, peaks in maps of high-density gas tracers (NH3 or CS), and IRAS point sources. We have obtained 7 maser detections, 6 of which (in CB 34, CB 54, CB 65, CB 101, CB 199, and CB 232) are reported for the first time here. Most of the water masers we detected are likely to be associated with young stellar objects (YSOs), except for CB 101 (probably an evolved object) and CB 65 (uncertain nature). The water maser in CB 199 shows a relatively high shift (~30 km/s) of its velocity centroid with respect to the cloud velocity, which is unusual for low-mass YSOs. We speculate that high-velocity masers in this kind of object could be related with episodes of energetic mass-loss in close binaries. Alternatively, the maser in CB 199 could be pumped by a protoplanetary or a young planetary nebula. CB 232 is the smallest Bok globule (~0.6 pc) known to be associated with water maser emission, although it would be superseded by the cases of CB 65 (~0.3 pc) and CB 199 (~0.5 pc) if their association with YSOs is confirmed. All our selection criteria have statistically compatible detection rates, except for IRAS sources, which tend to be a somewhat worse predictor for the presence of maser emission., Comment: 42 pages, 7 figures. Context : Highly-collimated outflows are believed to be the earliest stage in outflow evolution, so their study is essential for understanding the processes driving outflows. The BHR71 Bok globule is known to harbour such a highly-collimated outflow, which is powered by a protostar belonging to a protobinary system. Aims : We aimed at investigating the interaction of collimated outflows with the ambient molecular cloud by using molecular tracers. Methods : We mapped the BHR71 highly-collimated outflow in CO(3-2) with the APEX telescope, and observed several bright points of the outflow in the molecular transitions CO(4-3), 13CO(3-2), C18O(3-2), and CH3OH(7-6). We use an LVG code to characterise the temperature enhancements in these regions. Results : In our CO(3-2) map, the second outflow driven by IRS2, which is the second source of the binary system, is completely revealed and shown to be bipolar. We also measure temperature enhancements in the lobes. The CO and methanol LVG modelling points to temperatures between 30 and 50K in the IRS1 outflow, while the IRS2 outflow seems to be warmer (up to 300K)., 4 pages, 5 Figures, accepted by A&A Letters, to appear in the APEX First results special issue

We present a detailed theoretical study of the isolated Bok globule CB17 (L1389) based on spectral maps of CS, HCO$^+$, C$^{18}$O, C$^{34}$S, and H$^{13}$CO$^+$ lines. A phenomenological model of prestellar core evolution, a time-dependent chemical model, and a radiative transfer simulation for molecular lines are combined to reconstruct the chemical and kinematical structure of this core. We developed a general criterion that allows to quantify the difference between observed and simulated spectral maps. By minimizing this difference, we find that very high and very low values of the effective sticking probability $S$ are not appropriate for the studied prestellar core. The most probable $S$ value for CB17 is 0.3--0.5. The spatial distribution of the intensities and self-absorption features of optically thick lines is indicative of UV irradiation of the core. By fitting simultaneously optically thin and optically thick transitions, we isolate the model that reproduces all the available spectral maps to a reasonable accuracy. The line asymmetry pattern in CB17 is reproduced by a combination of infall, rotation, and turbulent motions with velocities $\sim0.05$ km s$^{-1}$, $\sim0.1$ km s$^{-1}$, and $\sim0.1$ km s$^{-1}$, respectively. These parameters corresponds to energy ratios $E_{\rm rot}/E_{\rm grav}\approx0.03$, $E_{\rm therm}/E_{\rm grav}\approx0.8$, and $E_{\rm turb}/E_{\rm grav}\approx0.05$ (the rotation parameters are determined for $i=90^\circ$). The chemical age of the core is about 2 Myrs. In particular, this is indicated by the central depletion of CO, CS, and HCO$^+$. We present recent results from optical photometric and spectroscopic observations of the pre-main sequence star V1184 Tau (CB 34V). The star is associated with the Bok globule CB 34 and was considered as a FUOR candidate in previous studies. Our photometric data obtained from October 2000 to April 2003 show that the stellar brightness varies with an amplitude of about 0.m 5 (I ), but from August 2003 the photometric behavior of the star has changed dramatically. Three deep brightness minima (ΔI ∼ 4m.2) were observed during the past two years. The analysis of available photometric data suggests that V1184 Tau shows two types of variability produced (1) by rotation of large cool spotted surface and (2) by occultation from circumstellar clouds of dust or from features of a circumstellar disk. The behavior of the V – I index indicates that the star becomes redder towards minimum light, but from a certain turning point (V ∼ 18m.2) it gets bluer and is fading further. Five medium dispersion optical spectra of V1184 Tau were obtained in the period 2001–2004. Signi.cant changes in the profile and strength of the emission lines in the spectrum of V1184 Tau were found. During minimum light the equivalent width of the Hα emission line increases from 4 A to 9 A. The [O I] lines (λλ 6003, 6363 A) are also seen in emission while the sodium doublet keeps its absorption strength and equivalent width. We present observational line data for five Bok Globules. Observations were made in the J = 2 → 1 and J = 3 → 2 rotational transitions of CO, 13 CO and C 18 O at the Heinrich-Hertz-Telescope in Arizona. Using the stochastic radiative transfer model (SRTM) based on the generalized radiative transfer equation as described in the previous papers of this series, we were able to fit the observed CO lines for four of the five Bok globules. The derived parameters such as the hydrogen density, the cloud mass and temperature in part differ significantly from values obtained from a standard LVG analysis or a microlurbulent approach. The best fits are obtained for models characterized by a ratio of the mean free path of photons to the correlation length of the turbulent velocity field of the order of unity. This is what characterizes the mesolurhulent regime that cannot be dressed by standard evaluation methods like LVG or microturbulent approximations.

We report on results of near-infrared and optical observations of the mm disk embedded in the Bok globule CB26 (Launhardt & Sargent 2001). The nearinfrared images show a bipolar reflection nebula with a central extinction lane which coincides with the mm disk. Imaging polarimetry of this object yielded a polarization pattern which is typical for a young stellar object surrounded by a large circumstellar disk and an envelope, seen almost edge-on. The strong linear polarization in the bipolar lobes is caused by single scattering at dust grains and allowed to locate the illuminating source which coincides with the center of the mm disk. The spectral energy distribution of the YSO embedded in CB26 resembles that of a Class I source with a luminosity of 0.5L⊙. Using the premain-sequence evolutionary tracks and the stellar mass inferred from the rotation [ ′′ ]

A method for determining distances to dark clouds and Bok globules based on broad-band optical and near-infrared photometry is presented. In this method, intrinsic colour indices of stars projected towards the direction of a cloud are computed by dereddening the observed colour indices using various trial values of extinction AV and a standard extinction law. The computed intrinsic colour indices for a star are then compared with the intrinsic colour indices of normal main-sequence stars and a spectral type is assigned to the star for which the computed colour indices best match the standard intrinsic colour indices. Distances (d )t othe stars are determined using the AV and absolute magnitudes (MV ) corresponding to the spectral types thus obtained. A plot of AV against d undergoes a sharp rise at a distance corresponding to the distance to the cloud. Using this method, we have determined a distance of 550 pc to the cometary globule CG 12. The distance of 550 pc and a Galactic latitude of b = 21 ◦ imply that CG 12 is at a height of ∼200 pc above the galactic mid-plane. The star formation efficiency in this cloud is found to be relatively high (16 per cent, to as large as ∼33 per cent). The existence of an H I shell centred at l = 315 ◦ , b = 30 ◦ with CG 12 near its boundary and its tail pointing away from the centre of the shell supports the suggestion of a supernova explosion, near the centre of the H I shell, being responsible for the cometary morphology and the triggering of star formation. Thus CG 12 is a rare example of triggered high-mass star formation at relatively large galactic height. We present the Early Release Observations of the HH 46/47 system and HH 46 IRS 1 source, taken with the three instruments aboard the Spitzer Space Telescope. The optically invisible southwest lobe, driven by the HH 47C bow shock, is revealed in full detail by the Infrared Array Camera (IRAC) images and displays a 'loop'-like morphology. Both of the mid-infrared outflow lobes are narrower than those of CO flow. We believe that the combination of emission by H2 rotational lines [S(11)-S(4)] and some atomic lines, which fall within the IRAC passbands, are responsible for the bulk of the observed emission, although contributions from the 3.3, 6.2, and 7.7 micron polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon emission bands cannot be ruled out. Weak spectral features corresponding to these emitters are present in the Infrared Spectrograph spectrum of the HH 47A bow shock. The spectrum of HH 46 IRS 1 shows remarkable similarities to those of high-mass protostars, which include the presence of H2O, CO2, CH4, and possibly NH3, CH3OH, and ices. The high ice abundances and the lack of signs of thermal processing indicate that these ices in the envelope are well shielded from the powerful outflow and its cavity. Emission from the Bok globule at 24 micron is detected and displays a similar structure to that observed at 8 micron.

Using hydrodynamic simulations we investigate the rotational properties and angular momentum evolution of prestellar and protostellar cores formed from gravoturbulent fragmentation of interstellar gas clouds. We find the specific angular momentum j of prestellar cloud cores in our models to be on average comparable to the observed values. A fraction of prestellar cores is gravitationally unstable and goes into collapse to build up protostars and protostellar systems. Their specific angular momentum is one order of magnitude lower than their parental cores and in agreement with observations of main-sequence binaries. The ratio of rotational to gravitational energy of protostellar cores in the model turns out to be very similar to the observed values. We find, that it is roughly conserved during the main collapse phase. This leads to j proportional to M^{2/3}, where j is specific angular momentum and M core mass. Although the temporal evolution of the angular momentum of individual protostars or protostellar systems is complex and highly time variable, this correlation holds well in a statistical sense for a wide range of turbulent environmental parameters. In addition, high turbulent Mach numbers result in the formation of more numerous protostellar cores with, on average, lower mass. Therefore, models with larger Mach numbers result in cores with lower specific angular momentum. We find, however, no dependence on the spatial scale of the turbulence. Our models predict a close correlation between the angular momentum vectors of neighboring protostars during their main accretion phase. Possible observational signatures are aligned disks and parallel outflows. We propose self-similar shocked flow models for certain dynamical evolution phases of young stellar objects (YSOs), `champagne flows' of H {\sevenrm II} regions surrounding OB stars and shaping processes of planetary nebulae (PNe). We analyze an isothermal fluid of spherical symmetry and construct families of similarity shocked flow solutions featured by: 1. either a core expansion with a finite central density or a core accretion at constant rate with a density scaling $\propto r^{-3/2}$; 2. a shock moving outward at a constant speed; 3. a preshock gas approaching a constant speed at large $r$ with a density scaling $\propto r^{-2}$. In addition to testing numerical codes, our models can accommodate diverse shocked flows with or without a core collapse or outflow and an envelope expansion or contraction. As an application, we introduce our model analysis to observations of Bok globule B335.

We present a new infrared extinction study of Globule 2, the most opaque molecular cloud core in the Coalsack complex. Using deep near-infrared imaging observations obtained with the ESO NTT we are able to examine the structure of the globule in significantly greater detail than previously possible. We find the most prominent structural feature of this globule to be a strong central ring of dust column density which was not evident in lower resolution studies of this cloud. This ring represents a region of high density and pressure that is likely a transient structure. For a spherical cloud geometry the ring would correspond to a dense inner shell of high pressure that could not be in dynamical equilibrium with its surroundings since there appear to be no sources of pressure in the central regions of the cloud that could support the shell against gravity and prevent its inward implosion. The timescale for the inward collapse of the ring would be less than 2 x 10^5 years, suggesting that this globule is in an extremely early stage of evolution, and perhaps caught in the process of forming a centrally condensed dense core or Bok globule. Outside its central regions the globule displays a well-behaved density profile whose shape is very similar to that of a stable Bonnor-Ebert sphere. Using SEST we also obtained a C18O spectrum toward the center of the cloud. The CO observation indicates that the globule is a gravitationally bound object. Analysis of the CO line profile reveals significant non-thermal gas motions likely due to turbulence. As a whole the globule may be evolving to a global state of quasi-static dynamical equilibrium in which thermal and turbulent pressure balance gravity., Comment: Contains 21 pages and 5 figures. Our CCD photometric data ($\it UBVRI$) obtained from October 2000 to April 2003 show that the star brightness varies with an amplitude of about $0\fm6$ ($\it V$) without increasing or decreasing. The comparison of our photometric and spectroscopic results suggests that V 1184 Tau has the characteristics of a WTTS in this period. The photometric data obtained from August 2003 to March 2004 show the beginning of a gradual decrease of the star brightness (~4 m in $\it I$-light). The analysis of the photometric data suggests that V 1184 Tau shows two types of variability produced (1) by the presence of large cool photospheric spots and (2) by occultation from circumstellar clouds of dust or from an orbiting extended body. The behavior of the $V-I$ index indicates that the star becomes redder towards minimum light, but from a certain turning point it gets bluer fading further. The possible scenarios to explain the observed eclipse are briefly discussed.

We study the influence and structure of the magnetic field in the early phases of low-mass star formation using polarization maps of Bok globules at a wavelength of 850micron, obtained with the Submillimeter Common-User Bolometer Array (SCUBA) at the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT). We discuss observations of the following sources: CB26 - a small globule with a nearly dispersed dense core and a young and large circumstellar disk, CB54 - a large globule with a massive dense core and a deeply embedded young stellar cluster, and B335, CB230, and CB244 - three nearby, relatively isolated small globules with low-mass protostellar cores. We find strongly aligned polarization vectors in the case of CB26, B335, and CB230, while the vector orientations in the case of CB54 and CB244 are more or less randomly distributed. The degree of polarization, amounting to several percent, was found to decrease toward the center in each source. Assuming dichroic emission by aligned non-spherical grains as the polarization mechanism, where the magnetic field plays a role in the alignment process, we derive magnetic field strengths and structures from the observed polarization patterns. We compare the magnetic field topology with the morphology and outflow directions of the globules. In the Class 0 sources B335, CB230, and CB244, the magnetic field is oriented almost perpendicular to the ouflow direction. In contrast, the inclination between outflow axis and magnetic field direction is much more moderate (36deg) in the more evolved Class I source CB26., to be published in Conf. Proc. We present results from optical photometric and spectroscopic observations of the pre-main sequence star V 1184 Tau. The star is associated with the Bok globule CB 34 and it was considered as a FUOR candidate in previous studies. Our CCD photometric data ($\it UBVRI$) obtained from October 2000–April 2002 show non-periodic changes in the brightness with amplitude of about 0.6 ( V ). In the period of observations, V 1184 Tau remained at the maximum brightness without increasing or decreasing. Two medium dispersion optical spectra of V 1184 Tau were obtained in 2001. Significant changes in the profile and strength of the emission peak in the H α line were found. The [OI] line ( λ 6003) is also seen in emission while the sodium doublet is still in a deep absorption. The comparison of our photometric and spectroscopic results suggests that V 1184 Tau has the characteristics of a WTTS.

The thermal dust continuum emission at 848 μm from the globule CB 068, a Class 0 young stellar object (YSO), reveals strong linear polarization percentage values (up to 11%) in two polarized-intensity regions located on either side of the center, away from the twin CO outflows. At the 5% polarized intensity level, the two highly polarized regions have a radial separation of 0.01 pc from the center of the Bok globule. The two polarized regions are located on either side of the axis of the twin CO outflows, with polarization contours paralleling the outflows. The linear polarization orientation leads us to deduce that, in the inner part of the polarized-intensity regions, the electric field vector roughly follows the boundary of a pseudodisk or bar (the pseudodisk or bar was previously detected both in dust and in ammonia emission). The linear polarization orientation, within a radius of 0.03 pc, can be matched roughly to an infalling halo-to-disk magnetic field morphology, excluding the regions of the external envelope and near the CO outflows. On a 0.04 pc scale, our model predictions for CB 068 give a pseudodisk diameter of about 8800 AU. We predict a magnetic field strength (over 0.03 pc) of about 150 μG, which comes about from the Chandrasekhar-Fermi method (via the ratio of the line of sight velocity dispersion to the polarization angle dispersion).

We derive an exact solution to the inverse absorption problem to calculate the density distribution in spherical symmetry of absorbing particles from the intensity pattern obtained for homogeneous illumination. We illustrate the capabilities of the method by the simple example of a constant density core and find the required numerical effort to be negligible. The applicability is discussed for physical problems where unknown absorption coefficients, particle size or density distributions can be determined from multi-frequency measurements of the transmission coefficient. The applications range from targets being evaporated by laser pulses to Bok globules in astrophysics.

We present near-infrared and millimetre observations of the large Bok globule CB 34. Two long parallel trails of H2 knots are discovered on wide-field images in the 1–0 S(1) 2.12 μ m emission line. These parsec scale H2 jets extend to the edge of the dark globule where they disappear without the trace of bow shocks. This suggests that the outflows physically extend into a lower density ambient medium where their terminating bows are beyond present detection limits. The two outflows are extremely well collimated and parallel to within 3°. The outflow mechanical luminosity, derived from CO measurements, and the shocked luminosity, estimated from the H2 emission, are similar, consistent with jet-driven non-evolving outflow structure. The jets appear to originate from the densest cores, as observed in H13 CO+ line emission. A central concentration of reddened stars and a lower density halo of less reddened stars within the globule are revealed by JHK photometry. Disordered motions are observed in the CO line velocity channel maps and can be driven by the power of the outflows emanating from dense cores. We sketch a picture for the star formation history of the globule in which two star phases have been formed. A weak diffuse emission halo is detected in the near infrared with colours consistent with either scattered light or a ro-vibrational H2 cascade. We propose that the halo is produced by ongoing H2 formation. Cloud evolution and halo H2 formation timescales are then both a few 105 yr. Thus, we may be witnessing the formation of a molecular cloud out of diffuse atomic gas. This supports a scheme in which this Bok globule has formed independently rather than through dislocation from a nearby molecular cloud.

BHR 160 is a virtually unstudied cometary globule within the Sco OB4 association in Scorpius at a distance of 1600pc. It is part of a system of cometary clouds which face the luminous O star HD155806. BHR 160 is special because it has an intense bright rim. We attempt to derive physical parameters for BHR 160 and to understand its structure and the origin of its peculiar bright rim. BHR 160 was mapped in the $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO and C$^{18}$O (2-1) and (1-0) and CS (3-2) and (2-1) lines. These data, augmented with stellar photometry derived from the ESO VVV survey, were used to derive the mass and distribution of molecular material in BHR 160 and its surroundings. Archival mid-infrared data from the WISE satellite was used to find IR excess stars in the globule and its neighbourhood. An elongated 1' by 0.6' core lies adjacent to the globule bright rim. $^{12}$CO emission covers the whole globule, but the $^{13}$CO, C$^{18}$O and CS emission is more concentrated to the core. The $^{12}$CO line profiles indicate the presence of outflowing material near the core, but the spatial resolution of the mm data is not sufficient for a detailed spatial analysis. The BHR 160 mass estimated from the C$^{18}$O mapping is 100$\pm$50Msun(d/1.6kpc)$^2$ where d is the distance to the globule. Approximately 70 percent of the mass lies in the dense core. The total mass of molecular gas in the direction of BHR 160 is 210$\pm$(d/1.6kpc)$^2$ Msun when estimated from the more extended VVV NIR photometry. We argue that the bright rim of BHR 160 is produced by a close-by early B-type star, HD 319648, that was likely recently born in the globule. Context: The initial conditions for the gravitational collapse of molecular cloud cores and the subsequent birth of stars are still not well constrained. The characteristic cold temperatures (about 10 K) in such regions require observations at sub-millimetre and longer wavelengths. The Herschel Space Observatory and complementary ground-based observations presented in this paper have the unprecedented potential to reveal the structure and kinematics of a prototypical core region at the onset of stellar birth. Aims: This paper aims to determine the density, temperature, and velocity structure of the star-forming Bok globule CB 17. This isolated region is known to host (at least) two sources at different evolutionary stages: a dense core, SMM1, and a Class I protostar, IRS. Methods: We modeled the cold dust emission maps from 100 micron to 1.2 mm with both a modified blackbody technique to determine the optical depth-weighted line-of-sight temperature and column density and a ray-tracing technique to determine the core temperature and volume density structure. Furthermore, we analysed the kinematics of CB17 using the high-density gas tracer N2H+. Results: From the ray-tracing analysis, we find a temperature in the centre of SMM1 of 10.6 K, a flat density profile with radius 9500 au, and a central volume density of n(H) = 2.3x10^5 cm-3. The velocity structure of the N2H+ observations reveal global rotation with a velocity gradient of 4.3 km/s/pc. Superposed on this rotation signature we find a more complex velocity field, which may be indicative of differential motions within the dense core. Conclusions: SMM is a core in an early evolutionary stage at the verge of being bound, but the question of whether it is a starless or a protostellar core remains unanswered., published in A&A

We present the polarization maps of three selected Bok globules CB56, CB60 and CB69 constructed using a V-band data from a CCD imaging polarimeter. The aim of this work is to measure the optical polarization ($p_v$) of background field stars in order to determine the polarization efficiency, $p_v/A_v$. We find that the local magnetic field of the cloud CB56 is almost aligned with the galactic field, but not in CB60 and CB69. A trend of decreasing polarization efficiency with increasing extinction ($A_v$) is observed: it can be well represented by a power law, $p_v/A_v \propto A_v^{-\alpha}$, where $\alpha = -0.56 \pm 0.36$, $-0.59 \pm 0.51$ and $-0.52 \pm 0.49$ for CB56, CB60 and CB69 respectively. This indicates that the linear polarization of the starlight due to aligned dust grains in these clouds is produced more efficiently in low extinction regions, compared with high obscured lines of sight., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures
