The Tatra Mountains stand out as the wettest and most water-rich region in Poland. Despite this, limited studies addressed this issue, and current knowledge largely relies on data obtained in the mid-20th century, with a substantial lack of current estimates. This study aims to fill this gap by evaluating the contemporary water resources of springs in the Tatra Mountains. The study bases on the most recent hydrological mapping of 1,018 springs. The spring resources were evaluated using parameters such as the number of springs, specific runoff, and crenological index, analysed across different physiographic regions, tectonic units, and altitudinal zones. Our studies showed that the highest number of springs occurs in the Western Tatras (66%) between 1000 and 1400 m a.s.l., especially within the Sub-Tatric unit. Springs with discharges ranging from 0.1–1.0 dm3∙s−1 constitute approximately 70% of all springs but they contribute to only 8.1% of spring water resources. Total spring discharge amounted to 2726 dm3∙s−1 and was higher in the Western Tatras (1982.5 dm3∙s−1 than in the High Tatras (743.5 dm3∙s−1 . The specific runoff amounted to 12.9 dm3∙s−1 m−2 with the highest total runoff at altitudes occupied by the most abundant karst springs (1000–1100 m a.s.l.). The crenological index amounted to 4.8 springs∙km−2 and was higher in the Western Tatras (6.5 springs∙km−2) than in the High Tatras (4.9 springs∙kmup−2) . The analysis revealed that the only five largest karst springs, constituting a mere 0.5% of all springs, account for 65% of spring water resources in the Tatras.

Mountain streams constitute challenging habitat for many fish species due to rapid and variable flow, cool temperature, and limited food resources. Groundwaters recharge by karst spring may however mitigate harsh habit conditions of mountain streams providing niches for different fish species. This study aims to assess the suitability of mountain streams, replenished by karst springs, for various fish species like alpine bullhead, European grayling, brown and brook trout. The study was conducted in the Chochołowski Stream in the Western Tatra Mountains, Poland. The assessment of abiotic habitat is based on different characteristics of hydrological and thermal regimes as well as water chemical composition investigated between 01.09.2012 and 31.09.2014. The findings reveal that: 1) downstream variability of habitat abiotic conditions (such as water temperature, flow, water chemical composition) may affect the distribution of fish species, 2) karst springs contribute up to 100% of the stream’s recharge during periods of winter low flow, 3) karstic groundwater reduces the variability and amplitudes of stream water temperature and weaken the periodicity in water temperature associated with daily course of air temperature and solar radiation, 4) groundwaters prevent stream freezing in winter and moderate summer temperatures, 5) increasing mineralisation of water below the spring recharge may positively affect fish distribution. The findings underscore the importance of karst springs in modifying the abiotic conditions of fish habitat in mountain streams.

Study region: Tatra Mountains, Western Carpathians Study focus: Our study aims to assess the impact of climatic changes on streamflow in headwater mountain catchments with varying human pressure. The research bases on hydrological and climatological data from a period 1971–2020 and includes trend analysis, wavelet analysis and paired catchment observations, comparing semi-natural and human-altered catchments. New hydrological insights for the region: Air temperature has increased (+0.4°C decade−1) in the region. Precipitation totals remained unchanged, however annual snowfall totals decreased (−69 mm decade−1, ∼6.3%) at the expense of rainfalls, especially in winter. Air temperature and precipitation exhibited altitude-dependent changes. Snow depths remained stable; however, snow cover duration has shortened (−2 to −4 days decade−1). The observed climatic changes have led to an increase in annual low flows (+7–11.5% decade−1), as well as winter low, average, and high flows, affecting the timing of snowmelt runoff. Streamflow changes were more pronounced in semi-natural catchments. Climatic-driven trends in streamflow were more evident in winter, whereas trends associated with human activities and land use were detected throughout the year. Discharge was more coherent with precipitation in human-altered catchments, and weaker in semi-natural catchments. The intensification of annual cycle in precipitation and semiannual cycle in snow cover at high altitudes, along with the intensification of semiannual cycle in streamflow, provide evidence of ongoing climatic changes.

Background/Objectives: Legume seeds, such as chickpeas, are a rich source of resistant starch (RS) and have a low glycemic index (GI). The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of cooking and cooling chickpea pasta on the RS content, glycemic response, and GI in healthy subjects. Methods: Twelve healthy subjects of both sexes, aged 18–65 years, participated in this study. Each person consumed two standardized portions of chickpea pasta: (i) freshly cooked (FCP) and (ii) cooked chickpea pasta which was cooled for 24 h at 4 °C and reheated before consumption (CCP). Glucose solution was provided as a reference food. Participants consumed chickpea pasta in a random order. GI measurements were completed using the standard methodology and calculated according to the ISO 2010 standard. Results: The cooling and reheating process significantly increased the RS content of boiled chickpea pasta (from 1.83 g/100 g to 3.65 g/100 g) and had a beneficial effect on postprandial glycemia in healthy individuals. The CCP pasta had a significantly lower GI value than the FCP pasta (33 vs. 39, p = 0.0022). A significant difference in the glucose, as identified by the incremental area under the curve (IAUC), was observed between the CCP and FCP (1327.9 ± 414.8 mg/dL/min vs. 1556.1 ± 456.9 mg/dL/min, p = 0.0022). The cooling–reheating process did not affect the sensory attributes of the chickpea pasta. In general, the overall acceptability of the CCP pasta was similar to that of the FCP pasta. Conclusions: The results of our study support the hypothesis that a reduced glycemic response after simple changes in technological intervention leads to a decrease in postprandial blood glucose and GI. This can be helpful for people who need to control postprandial glycemia.

Resistant starch (RS) is a fraction of starch not digested and absorbed in the small intestine, and it is fermented by the intestinal microbiota in the colon, thereby influencing many health benefits. Legumes such as beans, lentils, and chickpeas are rich in fermentable dietary fiber, and RS can be included in this fiber group. These legumes are not considered a “typical” source of starch and have not been extensively studied as a source of RS. There are still insufficient data on modern non-thermal methods like high-pressure processing (HPP) and combining this method with refrigerated storage. The study aimed to investigate and compare the effects of HPP and HPP combined with refrigerated storage on the RS content of legumes, particularly white beans, green lentils, and chickpeas. Different pressure levels and processing times were used to evaluate changes in RS content and to assess the total fiber content and fiber fraction of the tested legumes. Our study showed that the increase in pressure and pressurization time affected changes in the RS content of the examined legumes. Furthermore, the cooling process of previously pressurized samples resulted in a significant increase in RS content.

Introduction: Sports injuries are the most common cause of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) ruptures. Previous research has demonstrated links between some of the COL27A1 and COL11A1 genetic variants and musculoskeletal soft tissue injuries. However, no previous research has investigated the COL27A1 rs1570460 and the COL11A1 rs3753841 in the context of ACL rupture in any population. Thus, our study aimed to assess the association between specific single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), i.e., COL27A1 rs946053 and COL11A1 rs3753841, and the occurrence of ACL injury (ACL-I) in a cohort of Polish athletes. Methods: The study enrolled 233 athletes with ACL-I (161 males and 71 females) and 228 healthy control athletes (143 males and 85 females) with no prior ACL-I history. Genotyping was conducted to assess the presence of COL27A1 rs946053 and COL11A1 rs3753841 genetic variants. Statistical analyses were performed using the R programming environment and package, and an association between SNPs and ACL-I was tested in four genetic models: dominant, co-dominant recessive, and over-dominant. Results: All the analyzed polymorphisms conformed to Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (HWE). The study revealed no significant differences between the ACL-I and control groups. Conclusions: Despite the absence of significant associations between the investigated SNPs and ACL-I in this study, our findings highlight the importance of continued research to unravel the precise genetic risk mechanisms and etiological factors contributing to ACL-I.

Obesity is a complex health risk influenced by genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. This review systematically assessed the association between interleukin gene polymorphisms (rs16944, rs17561, rs1143623, rs1143633, rs1143634, rs1800587, rs2234677, and rs4848306), IL-4 (rs180275, rs1805010, IL-6 rs13306435, rs1800795, rs1800796, rs1800797, rs2228145, rs2228145, rs2229238, and rs4845623), IL-10 (rs1518110, rs1518111, rs1800871, rs1800872, rs1800896, rs1878672, rs2834167, rs3024491, rs3024496, rs3024498, and rs3024505), IL-15 (rs3136617, rs3136618, and rs2296135), and IL-18 (rs187238, rs1946518, rs2272127, rs2293225, and rs7559479) and the risk of overweight and obesity in adults, focusing on IL-6 rs1800795 through a meta-analysis. The focus on IL-6 in this review arises from its pleiotropic nature and unclear effect on obesity risk. The review included studies published from 1998 to 2023, sourced from Science Direct, EBSCOhost, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. Bias was assessed with the Cochrane Collaboration tool, and funnel plots were used for publication bias. Results were synthesized into pooled odds ratios (ORs) and confidence intervals (CIs). Thirty studies comprising approximately 29,998 participants were included. The selection criteria required that the articles include participants who were overweight or obese, and this condition needed to be linked to IL polymorphisms. In a meta-analysis, in the dominant model, the pooled OR was 1.26 (95% CI 1.08 to 1.47), indicating those with the GC/CC genotype for IL-6 rs1800795 are 1.26 times more likely to be overweight/obese than GG genotype carriers. For the recessive model, the OR was 1.25 (95% CI 1.04 to 1.51). The overdominant model showed no significant association (OR 1.08, 95% CI 0.94 to 1.25). Interleukin gene variation, particularly the IL-6 rs1800795 variant, is modestly associated with obesity risk. This suggests that other factors, such as the environment, also play a role in obesity. Thus, individuals with this particular IL-6 variant may have a slightly higher likelihood of being overweight or obese compared to those without it, but this is just one of many factors influencing obesity risk. The migration industry consists of actors and organisations (e.g. agents, brokers, agencies, corporations) through which migration is facilitated, organised, and accelerated. Although the migration industry gained prominence in the late 20th century within labour mobility, it has relatively rarely been the subject of historical analysis. This historiographical essay argues that employers' needs and demands for foreign workers, often ad-hoc, have triggered the emergence and development of the migration industry. Rooted in modern historical debates on labour migration, this essay aims to critically assess various forms of cooperation between employers and commercial actors worldwide and place those strategies within the migration industry. Inspired by dichotomous approach to capturing the relationships identified between employers and actors in the migration industry (i.e. agents and partners), this essay investigates the larger spectrum of types of relationships that have taken place historically. We argue that since the mid-19th century, we have witnessed an evolution of these relationships: from acting as a provider of labour (supplier or agent) to a greater professionalisation and consolidation of the relationship between employers and actors in the migration industry (partners and then allies). This publication presents the application of the Elios 3 caged drone in underground geodetic measurements at the LW “Bogdanka” coal mine. Traditional surveying methods are increasingly being replaced by modern technologies such as laser scanners and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). LW “Bogdanka” mine has wide experience in the use of drones in surface surveys, which has enabled the implementation of these devices also in underground mine excavations. The Elios 3 aircraft, equipped with a 4K camera, thermal imaging camera, distance sensor and LiDAR technology, provides precise scanning of the environment and creating high-density point clouds. The SLAM stabilization system ensures the accuracy of measurements even in difficult conditions. This article focuses on the practical applications of the Elios 3 drone in the mine, such as inspections of coal storage tanks, assessment of the technical condition of dewatering roadways and measurements in hard-to-reach areas. The use of UAV significantly improves operational efficiency, reduces survey time and minimizes risks to employees. Thanks to LiDAR technology, Elios 3 accurately represents the details of the object being measured, which is crucial for maintaining and improving the mine’s infrastructure. The introduction of a drone for surveying at the LW “Bogdanka” mine brings numerous benefits, including increased workplace safety and advanced measurement capabilities in hard-to-reach and dangerous areas.

Human genome research in sports raises complex ethical considerations regarding the intersection of genetics and athletic performance. Pursuing genetic enhancements must uphold fairness, equality, and respect for human dignity. This narrative review explores the ethical dimensions of human genome research in sports, its potential implications on athletes, and the integrity of sports. As a narrative review, this study synthesizes the existing literature and expert insights to examine the ethical aspects of human genome research in sports. This study extensively examined the current literature on genetics, sports performance, ethical concerns, human rights, and legal regulations within the European context. The literature was searched using the SPORTDiscus, Scopus, Google Scholar, and PubMed databases. Exploring human genome research in sports reveals significant ethical implications, including potential genetic discrimination, impacts on human rights, and creating a genetic underclass of athletes. There are also definite benefits surrounding genetic testing. In conclusion, this review contends that integrating ethical considerations into developing and applying genetic technologies in sports is crucial to upholding fundamental principles of fairness, equality, and respect for human dignity. It stresses the importance of open and inclusive dialogue about the potential consequences of genetic advancements on athletic performance, future generations, and the integrity of sports. Abstract Introduction and purpose Low-back pain (LBP) is one the most common causes of medical visits. Although specific diagnosis cannot always be made, degenerative spinal disease may be one. Non-surgical approach is the treatment of choice in most cases and provides satisfactory results. However, some patients require surgery when conservative treatment fails. Among different interventions, lumbar fusion is one of the most important. Common question arising from patients qualified for this type of surgery is the possibility of returning to sport (RTS). Description of the state of knowledge Successful RTS may be achieved with proper rehabilitation without surgery. However, invasive intervention, including lumbar fusion, is indicated when a non-surgical approach fails. Return to recreational sport is highly plausible among patients operated for spinal structures degeneration. The timing of RTS varies on the type of sport, nonetheless one may expect to rejoin sporting activities within a year. The return to golf has been well documented in the literature in comparison to other sport types. Golfers may expect successful recovery as 79-100% of them re-engage in golfing activities. Positive RTS is feasible for professional athletes and some of them are able to compete at elite level after surgery. The need for a well-structured rehabilitation protocol is underlined. Summary Successful RTS can be achieved in the vast majority of cases after lumbar fusion procedures. The suggested timeframes has been set as 6-12 months depending on the sport type. There are no strict recommendations, but general criterias include: 1) complete/nearly complete pain reduction; 2) adequate flexibility, strength and range of motion; 3) radiographic evidence of successful fusion.

Meningitis caused by infectious pathogens is associated with vessel damage and infarct formation, however the physiological cause is often unknown. Cryptococcus neoformans is a human fungal pathogen and causative agent of cryptococcal meningitis, where vascular events are observed in up to 30% of patients, predominantly in severe infection. Therefore, we aimed to investigate how infection may lead to vessel damage and associated pathogen dissemination using a zebrafish model that permitted noninvasive in vivo imaging. We find that cryptococcal cells become trapped within the vasculature (dependent on their size) and proliferate there resulting in vasodilation. Localised cryptococcal growth, originating from a small number of cryptococcal cells in the vasculature was associated with sites of dissemination and simultaneously with loss of blood vessel integrity. Using a cell-cell junction tension reporter we identified dissemination from intact blood vessels and where vessel rupture occurred. Finally, we manipulated blood vessel tension via cell junctions and found increased tension resulted in increased dissemination. Our data suggest that global vascular vasodilation occurs following infection, resulting in increased vessel tension which subsequently increases dissemination events, representing a positive feedback loop. Thus, we identify a mechanism for blood vessel damage during cryptococcal infection that may represent a cause of vascular damage and cortical infarction during cryptococcal meningitis. Author summary Meningitis is a life threatening form of infection in the brain that is difficult to treat. How infection spreads from the blood to cause meningitis is not well understood. Here we have shown how infection with the fungus Cryptococcus neoformans can be spread from the blood by blocking and bursting blood vessels. Using zebrafish larvae, we were able to follow the same infections over a period of days to understand how this infection behaves in blood vessels. We found that fungal cells become stuck within blood vessels depending on their size. These cells grow within blood vessels, resulting in the blood vessels becoming wider. We measured increased tension in blood vessels suggesting that, with the bloackage and widening of vessels, there was increased local blood pressure. We found that vessel blockage was associated with their rupture and spreading of fungus into the surround tissue. Finally, by increasing the tension in vessels we could increase the number of blood bursting events supporting our conclusion that blood vessel blockage leads to the spread of the infection outside of blood vessels.

In the current work, the influence of high-pressure homogenization (HPH) (200, 250, and 300 MPa) on pH, Brix, turbidity, viscosity, particle size distribution (PSD), zeta potential, color, polyphenol oxidase (PPO), peroxidase (POD), polyphenol profile and bioaccessibility of total phenolic compounds was studied. The results show no change in the apple juice’s pH, TSS and density. In contrast, other physiochemical properties of apple juice treated with HPH were significantly changed. Besides total phenolic content (15% degradation) in the HPH-treated apple juice at 300 MPa, the PPO and POD activities were reduced by a maximum of 70 and 35%, respectively. Furthermore, among different digestion stages, various values corresponding to PSD and zeta potential were recorded; the total phenolic content was gradually reduced from the mouth to the intestine stage. The polyphenol bioaccessibility of HPH-treated apple juice was 17% higher compared to the untreated apple juice.

So far, Bacillus species bacteria are being used as bacteria concentrates, supplementing cleaning preparations in order to reduce odor and expel pathogenic bacteria. Here, we discuss the potential of Bacillus species as ‘natural’ probiotics and evaluate their microbiological characteristics. An industrially used microbiological concentrates and their components of mixed Bacillus species cultures were tested, which may be a promising bacteria source for food probiotic preparation for supplementary diet. In this study, antagonistic activities and probiotic potential of Bacillus species, derived from an industrial microbiological concentrate, were demonstrated. The cell free supernatants (CFS) from Bacillus licheniformis mostly inhibited the growth of foodborne pathogenic bacteria, such as Escherichia coli O157:H7 ATCC 35150, Salmonella Enteritidis KCCM 12021, and Staphylococcus aureus KCCM 11335, while some of Bacillus strains showed synergistic effect with foodborne pathogenic bacteria. Moreover, Bacillus strains identified by the MALDI TOF-MS method were found sensitive to chloramphenicol, kanamycin, and rifampicin. B. licheniformis and B. cereus displayed the least sensitivity to the other tested antibiotics, such as ampicillin, ampicillin and sulfbactam, streptomycin, and oxacillin and bacitracin. Furthermore, some of the bacterial species detected extended their growth range from the mesophilic to moderately thermophilic range, up to 54 °C. Thus, their potential sensitivity to thermophilic TP-84 bacteriophage, infecting thermophilic Bacilli, was tested for the purpose of isolation a new bacterial host for engineered bionanoparticles construction. We reason that the natural environmental microflora of non-pathogenic Bacillus species, especially B. licheniformis, can become a present probiotic remedy for many contemporary issues related to gastrointestinal tract health, especially for individuals under metabolic strain or for the increasingly growing group of lactose-intolerant people.

The construction of new, artificially snowed, ski slopes and the accompanying infrastructure changes the natural environment and exerts pressure on the ecosystems. This study examined the impact of the construction and operation of a new ski slope, with its infrastructure and artificial snow production, on the quality of nearby stream waters. The research period covered the time before, during and after the slope construction. Electrolytic conductivity (EC) and pH were measured on-site, chemical analyses included the determination of Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+, HCO3−, SO42−, Cl−, NO3−, and microbiological analysis comprised mesophilic and psychrophilic bacteria, total and fecal coliforms, and E. coli. As a result of intensive environmental transformations, the examined parameters varied significantly over the study period, as shown by the coefficient of variation. Due to land cover changes, concentrations of all the examined parameters increased during the ski slope construction due to ions and bacteria leaching from the soil. However, when construction works were finished, all bacterial and some chemical indicators returned to the state observed before the construction, most probably due to the recovery of vegetation and self-purification of water. Supply of melt water from artificial snow, produced from water containing higher concentrations of ions, increased pH, EC, Ca2+, Mg2+ and HCO3− in the stream. Providing that the development of ski stations is unavoidable in the considered region, conducting studies assessing the impact of new ski slope construction is an important step that should be conducted prior to undertaking such investments.

In this article, a cost-effective and fast interrogating system for wide temperature measurement with Fiber Bragg Gratings is presented. The system consists of a Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) with a High Contrast Grating (HCG)-based cavity that allows for the fast tuning of the output wavelength. The work focuses on methods of bypassing the limitations of the used VCSEL laser, especially its relatively narrow tuning range. Moreover, an error analysis is provided by means of the VCSEL temperature instability and its influence on the system performance. A simple proof of concept of the measurement system is shown, where two femtosecond Bragg gratings were used to measure temperature in the range of 25 to 800 °C. In addition, an exemplary simulation of a system with sapphire Bragg gratings is provided, where we propose multiplexation in the wavelength and reflectance domains. The presented concept can be further used to measure a wide range of temperatures with scanning frequencies up to hundreds of kHz.
