Abstract

International audience; The 13th century BC witnessed the zenith of the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean civilizations which declined at the end of the Bronze Age, ,3200 years ago. Weakening of this ancient flourishing Mediterranean world shifted the political and economic centres of gravity away from the Levant towards Classical Greece and Rome, and led, in the long term, to the emergence of the modern western civilizations. Textual evidence from cuneiform tablets and Egyptian reliefs from the New Kingdom relate that seafaring tribes, the Sea Peoples, were the final catalyst that put the fall of cities and states in motion. However, the lack of a stratified radiocarbon-based archaeology for the Sea People event has led to a floating historical chronology derived from a variety of sources spanning dispersed areas. Here, we report a stratified radiocarbon-based archaeology with anchor points in ancient epigraphic-literary sources, Hittite-Levantine-Egyptian kings and astronomical observations to precisely date the Sea People event. By confronting historical and science-based archaeology, we establish an absolute age range of 1192-1190 BC for terminal destructions and cultural collapse in the northern Levant. This radiocarbon-based archaeology has far-reaching implications for the wider Mediterranean, where an elaborate network of international relations and commercial activities are intertwined with the history of civilizations.

Ce volume en l'honneur de Karel Van Lerberghe contient 47 contributions de ses collègues et des étudiants portant sur l'histoire et l'archéologie de la région syro-mésopotamienne. L'accent mis sur la Syrie et sur ​​la période paléo-babylonienne reflète les intérêts de recherche principaux de Karel Van Lerberghe. Plusieurs tablettes cunéiformes sont publiées ici pour la première fois. Les recherches archéologiques plus récentes sont présentées dans les contributions relatives à Ougarit, Tell Tweini, Tell Beydar, etc., This volume in honour of Karel Van Lerberghe contains 47 contributions by his colleagues and students dealing with the history and archaeology of the Syro-Mesopotamian area. Abstract

The article offers information on the local and imperial dating and time-reckoning of the Hellinistic period. It mentions the quick transformation of the year-counting system which has been used in the Ancient Near East and Antiquity. It states that though the calendar was used for conservative religious reasons, there have been successful and unsuccessful attempts to make a uniform calendar. It cites the similarity of the year-counting system of the Achaemenid imperial with the Macedonian one.

Abstract

AbstractThe passage in the Chronicle of the Successorsdealing with the year Phil.07 (=317/316 BC; ABC10 Obv. 14?18 = BCHP3 Obv. 33?37) is often used as a marker to favour the low-chronology hypothesis for the early Hellenistic period and Second Diadoch War. This in-depth study of this passage deals with the nature of the troops mentioned there (l?eren2.me? lugal, ?royal troops?, and l??a-ni-i ??lugal, ?royal ?an?troops?) and the possible implications for the chronological debate. The result is that the passage is not pivotal for the low chronology because it is not only in a low-chronology scenario that it is possible. The use of ?royal (?an?) troops' in the Chronicledoes not exclude the high chronology for the Second Diadoch War.
