Abstract

We consider p-evolution equations, for $p\geq2$, with complex valued coefficients. We prove that a necessary condition for $H^\infty$ well-posedness of the associated Cauchy problem is that the imaginary part of the coefficient of the subprincipal part (in the sense of Petrowski) satisfies a decay estimate as x goes to infinity.

Abstract

Il contributo intende affrontare la prassi statutaria dei più recenti partiti politici, al fine di evidenziare la "crisi" della democrazia interna delle organizzazioni politiche. Ciò, almeno, sotto un duplica aspetto. Da un lato sono codificate regole che attribuiscono ampi poteri a pochi soggetti. Dall'altro, vi è la tendenza a superare le regole statutarie, privilegiando le scelte e ed i diktat di coloro che guidano il partito politico. Nella parte finale del contributo si dialoga con il futuro legislatore al fine di individuare alcune linee guida per una disciplina organica dei partiti politici.

Abstract

This work was undertaken to assess the long-term impacts of a ruminal transponder, used for electronic identification, on ruminal motility and on health and performance of cattle, as well as to study the electromagnetic effects on ruminal bacteria in vitro. A passive transponder (51.4 g, 67 x 17 mm) was delivered into the forestomachs of 8 calves, 32 bulls, 10 heifers, and 40 dairy cows. Final readability was 87.5% in calves, 96.9% in bulls, 90% in heifers, and 100% in cows at 481, 360, 650, and 601 d, respectively, after transponder administration. The transponder did not affect production or reproduction of cows over a 2-yr period, or performance of bulls, or mortality compared with control animals. Chewing movements per bolus were lower (P < 0.01) in treated animals than in controls (49.6 vs. 52.2, 51.2 vs. 63.6, and 57.0 vs. 59.7 for bulls, heifers, and cows, respectively). Regurgitation frequency (number of boluses/10 min) tended to be greater in treated cattle: 12.4 vs. 11.3 (P = 0.07), 11.3 vs. 10.6, and 11.3 vs. 10.7 (P = 0.08) for bulls, heifers, and cows, respectively. Rumination patterns of calves fitted with transponders within the first weeks of life were similar to controls. During the experiment, 43 treated animals (8 calves, 29 bulls, and 6 cows) were slaughtered. Thirty transponders were localized in the reticulum (3 calves, 24 bulls, and 3 cows), 11 in the rumen (4 calves, 4 bulls, and 3 cows), and 2 were not recovered (1 calf and 1 bull). Within the calves, 57% of the boluses were found in the rumen. In 8 reticula (2 calves and 6 bulls) and 1 rumen (1 cow), an impression left by physical contact of the transponder was observed, although histological examination did not reveal specific lesions in the mucosa of the dystrophic areas. In strained, whole ruminal contents incubated in vitro, pH values were lower after 24 and 48 h (P < 0.001) of continuous exposure to an electromagnetic field induced by the transponder-reading system. After 48 h of incubation, total bacterial numbers and N[H.sub.3]-N concentration were greater (P < 0.001) in exposed flasks than in controls. These data indicate that the transponder may alter, via mechanical action, the reticuloruminal mucosa and rumination patterns. Furthermore, the transponder may increase, via its electromagnetic action, the growth rate and metabolic activity of ruminal bacteria. Abstract

Objective:To provide a prospective developmental model for behavioral outcomes in preterm infants in relation to developmental care (DC) practices and postnatal maternal depression.Study design:A longitudinal, multicenter, follow-up study conducted in 25 Italian tertiary neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). Participants were 162 healthy very preterm infants and their mothers. The level of quality of DC was assessed for each hospital. Infant's neurobehavioral profile was evaluated twice: at discharge (T1) and at 18 months for behavioral problems (T3). Maternal depressive symptomatology was measured at T1 and at 6 months (T2).Results:Low-quality DC in NICUs was associated with lower levels of infant neurobehavioral adaptability and higher levels of maternal depressive symptoms. Maternal depressive symptomatology in conjunction with higher infant dysregulation predicted more internalizing problems at 18 months of age.Conclusion:DC interventions and postnatal maternal depression, as well as infant behavior have an impact on short- and long-term infant outcomes.

Abstract

To investigate the mechanisms by which caloric restriction affects reproductive function in female rabbits, we measured, in animals intact or ovariectomized (OVX) estrogen-primed and fed ad libitum or fasted for 48 h, the adenohypophysial expression of estrogen receptor-alpha (ESR1) and gonadotropin releasing hormone receptor (GnRHR) and the dynamic secretion of LH following GnRH stimulation. Fasting increased the number of GnRHR-immunoreactive (-IR) cells in intact animals, whereas reduced the density of ESR1-IR cells in OVX rabbits. Estrogen priming decreased the number of ESR1-IR cells in fasted and OVX animals. Ovariectomy increased the number of ESR1-IR cells in fed rabbits, but caused an opposite effect in both fed and fasted animals treated with estrogen. Fasting down regulated the mRNA levels for ESR1 and GnRHR. Estrogen-priming reduced the abundance for ESR1 mRNA in both fed and fasted rabbits, and that for GnRHR in fasted rabbits. Ovariectomy halved ESR1 mRNA levels independently of treatment and feeding condition, whereas increased (P 001) that for GnRHR in estrogen-primed rabbits. In all rabbits, an LH surge occurred 30 min after GnRH injection but the lowest levels were found in intact fasted rabbits and the highest in fasted, estrogen-primed animals. The LH profile was similar in intact and OVX rabbits and neither fasting nor estrogen priming modified it. In conclusion, fasting differentially modifies the ESR1 and GnRHR expression in the pituitary, depending on the presence of gonadal hormones, indicating complex interactions between metabolic signals and ovarian steroids.

Abstract

The in vivo chronic and in vitro acute effects of di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) on the reproductive function of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARG) were studied in rabbit corpora lutea (CL) at early stage (Day 4), midstage (Day 9), and late stage (Day 13) of pseudopregnancy. The rabbits were in vivo treated with DEHP for 15 days before induction of pseudopregnancy. Immunohistochemistry provided evidence for the presence of PPARG, prostaglandin endoperoxide synthase 1 (PTGS1), PTGS2, prostaglandin E2-9-ketoreductase (PGE2-9-K), and 3beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3beta-HSD) in all the luteal cells during pseudopregnancy. DEHP decreased progesterone plasma levels and CL production in all the luteal stages and PPARG protein and gene expressions in early and mid-CL. DEHP in vivo treatment reduced PTGS2 protein expression at the late stage and that of PGE2-9-K at all the stages, whereas PTGS1 and 3beta-HSD were not affected. In in vitro cultured CL, DEHP alone, the PPARG antagonist T0070907 alone, or DEHP plus T0070907 diminished progesterone production and 3beta-HSD activity and increased PGF2alpha and PTGS2 in early and mid-CL, whereas DEHP plus the PPARG agonist 15d-PGJ2 did not affect these hormones and enzymes. All the in vitro treatments did not affect PGE2 secretion as well as PTGS1 and PGE2-9-K enzymatic activities in all the luteal stages. These results provided evidence that DEHP favors functional luteolysis of pseudopregnant rabbit CL, with a mechanism that seems to involve PPARG expression down-regulation, an increase of PTGS2 activity and prostaglandin F2alpha secretion, 3beta-HSD down-regulation, and decrease in progesterone.

50. Genetic and non-genetic factors affecting rabbit doe sexual receptivity as estimated from one generation of divergent selection

Abstract

[EN] Sexual receptivity of rabbit does at insemination greatly influences fertility and is generally induced by hormones or techniques known as “biostimulation”. Searching for more sustainable farming systems, an original alternative would be to utilise the genetic pathway to increase the does’receptivity. The purpose of the present study was to identify genetic and non-genetic factors that influence rabbit doe sexual receptivity, in the context of a divergent selection experiment over 1 generation. The experiment spanned 2 generations: the founder generation (G0) consisting of 140 rabbit does, and the G1 generation comprising 2 divergently selected lines (L and H lines) with 70 does each and 2 successive batches from each generation. The selection rate of the G0 females to form the G1 lines was 24/140. The selection tests consisted of 16 to 18 successive receptivity tests at the rate of 3 tests per week. On the basis of 4716 tests from 275 females, the average receptivity was 56.6±48.2%. A batch effect and a test operator effect were revealed. The contribution of females to the total variance was 20.0%, whereas that of bucks was only 1.1%. Throughout the experiment, 18.2% of does expressed a low receptivity (< 34%), 50.7% a medium one and 33.1% a high one (>66%). Some does were frequently receptive, whereas others were rarely receptive. The repeatability of sexual receptivity was approximately 20%. The results confirmed the high variability of sexual receptivity of non-lactating rabbit does maintained without any biostimulation or hormonal treatment. A lack of selection response on receptivity was observed. Accordingly, the heritability of receptivity was estimated at 0.01±0.02 from an animal model and at 0.02±0.03 from a sire and dam model. The heritability of the average receptivity of a doe was calculated as 0.04. In agreement with the low estimated heritability, the heritability determined was no different from zero.
