Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) have excelled in predicting graph properties in various applications ranging from identifying trends in social networks to drug discovery and malware detection. With the abundance of new architectures and increased complexity, GNNs are becoming highly specialized when tested on a few well-known datasets. However, how the performance of GNNs depends on the topological and features properties of graphs is still an open question. In this work, we introduce a comprehensive benchmarking framework for graph machine learning, focusing on the performance of GNNs across varied network structures. Utilizing the geometric soft configuration model in hyperbolic space, we generate synthetic networks with realistic topological properties and node feature vectors. This approach enables us to assess the impact of network properties, such as topology-feature correlation, degree distributions, local density of triangles (or clustering), and homophily, on the effectiveness of different GNN architectures. Our results highlight the dependency of model performance on the interplay between network structure and node features, providing insights for model selection in various scenarios. This study contributes to the field by offering a versatile tool for evaluating GNNs, thereby assisting in developing and selecting suitable models based on specific data characteristics.

The Renormalization Group is crucial for understanding systems across scales, including complex networks. Renormalizing networks via network geometry, a framework in which their topology is based on the location of nodes in a hidden metric space, is one of the foundational approaches. However, the current methods assume that the geometric coupling is strong, neglecting weak coupling in many real networks. This paper extends renormalization to weak geometric coupling, showing that geometric information is essential to preserve self-similarity. Causal set theory is perhaps the most minimalistic approach to quantum gravity, in the sense that it makes next to zero assumptions about the structure of spacetime below the Planck scale. Yet even with this minimalism, the continuum limit is still a major challenge in causal sets. One aspect of this challenge is the measurement of distances in causal sets. While the definition and estimation of time-like distances is relatively straightforward, dealing with space-like distances is much more problematic. Here we introduce an approach to measure distances between space-like separated events based on their causal overlap. We show that the distance estimation errors in this approach vanish in the continuum limit even for smallest distances of the order of the Planck length. These results are expected to inform the causal set geometrogenesis in general, and in particular the development of evolving causal set models in which space emerges from causal dynamics.

In existing models and embedding methods of networked systems, node features describing their qualities are usually overlooked in favor of focusing solely on node connectivity. This study introduces $FiD$-Mercator, a model-based ultra-low dimensional reduction technique that integrates node features with network structure to create $D$-dimensional maps of complex networks in a hyperbolic space. This embedding method efficiently uses features as an initial condition, guiding the search of nodes' coordinates towards an optimal solution. The research reveals that downstream task performance improves with the correlation between network connectivity and features, emphasizing the importance of such correlation for enhancing the description and predictability of real networks. Simultaneously, hyperbolic embedding's ability to reproduce local network properties remains unaffected by the inclusion of features. The findings highlight the necessity for developing network embedding techniques capable of exploiting such correlations to optimize both network structure and feature association jointly in the future.

Graph-structured data provide a comprehensive description of complex systems, encompassing not only the interactions among nodes but also the intrinsic features that characterize these nodes. These features play a fundamental role in the formation of links within the network, making them valuable for extracting meaningful topological information. Notably, features are at the core of deep learning techniques such as Graph Convolutional Neural Networks (GCNs) and offer great utility in tasks like node classification, link prediction, and graph clustering. In this paper, we present a comprehensive framework that treats features as tangible entities and establishes a bipartite graph connecting nodes and features. By assuming that nodes sharing similarities should also share features, we introduce a hyperbolic geometric space where both nodes and features coexist, shaping the structure of both the node network and the bipartite network of nodes and features. Through this framework, we can identify correlations between nodes and features in real data and generate synthetic datasets that mimic the topological properties of their connectivity patterns. The geometric renormalization technique for complex networks has successfully revealed the multiscale self-similarity of real network topologies and can be applied to generate replicas at different length scales. In this letter, we extend the geometric renormalization framework to weighted networks, where the intensities of the interactions play a crucial role in their structural organization and function. Our findings demonstrate that weights in real networks exhibit multiscale self-similarity under a renormalization protocol that selects the connections with the maximum weight across increasingly longer length scales. We present a theory that elucidates this symmetry, and that sustains the selection of the maximum weight as a meaningful procedure. One of the pillars of the geometric approach to networks has been the development of model-based mapping tools that embed real networks in its latent geometry. In particular, the tool Mercator embeds networks into the hyperbolic plane. However, some real networks are better described by the multidimensional formulation of the underlying geometric model. Here, we introduce $D$-Mercator, a model-based embedding method that produces multidimensional maps of real networks into the $(D+1)$-hyperbolic space, where the similarity subspace is represented as a $D$-sphere. We used $D$-Mercator to produce multidimensional hyperbolic maps of real networks and estimated their intrinsic dimensionality in terms of navigability and community structure. Multidimensional representations of real networks are instrumental in the identification of factors that determine connectivity and in elucidating fundamental issues that hinge on dimensionality, such as the presence of universality in critical behavior.

Many empirical studies have revealed that the occurrences of contacts associated with human activities are non-Markovian temporal processes with a heavy tailed inter-event time distribution. Besides, there has been increasing empirical evidence that the infection and recovery rates are time-dependent. However, we lack a comprehensive framework to analyze and understand non-Markovian contact and spreading processes on temporal networks. In this paper, we propose a general formalism to study non-Markovian dynamics on non-Markovian temporal networks. We find that, under certain conditions, non-Markovian dynamics on temporal networks are equivalent to Markovian dynamics on static networks. Interestingly, this result is independent of the underlying network topology.

First principle network models are crucial to make sense of the intricate topology of real complex networks. While modeling efforts have been quite successful in undirected networks, generative models for networks with asymmetric interactions are still not well developed and are unable to reproduce several basic topological properties. This is particularly disconcerting considering that real directed networks are the norm rather than the exception in many natural and human-made complex systems. In this paper, we fill this gap and show how the network geometry paradigm can be elegantly extended to the case of directed networks. We define a maximum entropy ensemble of geometric (directed) random graphs with a given sequence of in- and out-degrees. Beyond these local properties, the ensemble requires only two additional parameters to fix the level of reciprocity and the seven possible types of 3-node cycles in directed networks. A systematic comparison with several representative empirical datasets shows that fixing the level of reciprocity alongside the coupling with an underlying geometry is able to reproduce the wide diversity of clustering patterns observed in real complex directed networks.

Turing patterns, arising from the interplay between competing species of diffusive particles, has long been an important concept for describing non-equilibrium self-organization in nature, and has been extensively investigated in many chemical and biological systems. Historically, these patterns have been studied in extended systems and lattices. Recently, the Turing instability was found to produce topological patterns in networks with scale-free degree distributions and the small world property, although with an apparent absence of geometric organization. While hints of explicitly geometric patterns in simple network models (e.g Watts-Strogatz) have been found, the question of the exact nature and morphology of geometric Turing patterns in heterogeneous complex networks remains unresolved. In this work, we study the Turing instability in the framework of geometric random graph models, where the network topology is explained by an underlying geometric space. We demonstrate that not only can geometric patterns be observed, their wavelength can also be estimated by studying the eigenvectors of the annealed graph Laplacian. Finally, we show that Turing patterns can be found in geometric embeddings of real networks. Reducing dimension redundancy to find simplifying patterns in high-dimensional datasets and complex networks has become a major endeavor in many scientific fields. However, detecting the dimensionality of their latent space is challenging but necessary to generate efficient embeddings to be used in a multitude of downstream tasks. Here, we propose a method to infer the dimensionality of networks without the need for any a priori spatial embedding. Due to the ability of hyperbolic geometry to capture the complex connectivity of real networks, we detect ultra low dimensionality far below values reported using other approaches. We applied our method to real networks from different domains and found unexpected regularities, including: tissue-specific biomolecular networks being extremely low dimensional; brain connectomes being close to the three dimensions of their anatomical embedding; and social networks and the Internet requiring slightly higher dimensionality. Beyond paving the way towards an ultra efficient dimensional reduction, our findings help address fundamental issues that hinge on dimensionality, such as universality in critical behavior.

Clustering $\unicode{x2013}$ the tendency for neighbors of nodes to be connected $\unicode{x2013}$ quantifies the coupling of a complex network to its latent metric space. In random geometric graphs, clustering undergoes a continuous phase transition, separating a phase with finite clustering from a regime where clustering vanishes in the thermodynamic limit. We prove this geometric-to-nongeometric phase transition to be topological in nature, with anomalous features such as diverging entropy as well as atypical finite size scaling behavior of clustering. Real networks are finite metric spaces. Yet the geometry induced by shortest path distances in a network is definitely not its only geometry. Other forms of network geometry are the geometry of latent spaces underlying many networks, and the effective geometry induced by dynamical processes in networks. These three approaches to network geometry are all intimately related, and all three of them have been found to be exceptionally efficient in discovering fractality, scale-invariance, self-similarity, and other forms of fundamental symmetries in networks. Network geometry is also of great utility in a variety of practical applications, ranging from the understanding how the brain works, to routing in the Internet. Here, we review the most important theoretical and practical developments dealing with these approaches to network geometry in the last two decades, and offer perspectives on future research directions and challenges in this novel frontier in the study of complexity.

Real networks often grow through the sequential addition of new nodes that connect to older ones in the graph. However, many real systems evolve through the branching of fundamental units, whether those be scientific fields, countries, or species. Here, we provide empirical evidence for self-similar growth of network structure in the evolution of real systems and present the Geometric Branching Growth model, which predicts this evolution and explains the symmetries observed. The model produces multiscale unfolding of a network in a sequence of scaled-up replicas preserving network features, including clustering and community structure, at all scales. Engaging in playful activities, such as playing a musical instrument, learning a language, or performing sports, is a fundamental aspect of human life. We present a quantitative empirical analysis of the engagement dynamics into playful activities. We do so by analyzing the behavior of millions of players of casual video games and discover a scaling law governing the engagement dynamics. This power-law behavior is indicative of a multiplicative (i.e., ``happy-get-happier'') mechanism of engagement characterized by a set of critical exponents. We also find, depending on the critical exponents, that there is a phase transition between the standard case where all individuals eventually quit the activity and another phase where a finite fraction of individuals never abandon the activity. The behavior that we have uncovered in this work might not be restricted only to human interaction with videogames. Instead, we believe it reflects a more general and profound behavior of how humans become engaged in challenging activities with intrinsic rewards.

Networks with underlying metric spaces attract increasing research attention in network science, statistical physics, applied mathematics, computer science, sociology, and other fields. This attention is further amplified by the current surge of activity in graph embedding. In the vast realm of spatial network models, only a few reproduce even the most basic properties of real-world networks. Here, we focus on three such properties---sparsity, small worldness, and clustering---and identify the general subclass of spatial homogeneous and heterogeneous network models that are sparse small worlds and that have nonzero clustering in the thermodynamic limit. We rely on the maximum entropy approach where network links correspond to noninteracting fermions whose energy dependence on spatial distances determines network small worldness and clustering.

Embedding a network in hyperbolic space can reveal interesting features for the network structure, especially in terms of self-similar characteristics. The hidden metric space, which can be thought of as the underlying structure of the network, is able to preserve some interesting features generally observed in real-world networks such as heterogeneity in the degree distribution, high clustering coefficient, and small-world effect. Moreover, the angular distribution of the nodes in the hyperbolic plane reveals a community structure of the embedded network. It is worth noting that, while a large body of literature compares well-known community detection algorithms, there is still no consensus on what defines an ideal community partition on a network. Moreover, heuristics for communities found on networks embedded in the hyperbolic space have been investigated here for the first time. We compare the partitions found on embedded networks to the partitions obtained before the embedding step, both for a synthetic network and for two real-world networks. The second part of this paper presents the application of our pipeline to a network of retweets in the context of the Italian elections. We introduce Mercator, a reliable embedding method to map real complex networks into their hyperbolic latent geometry. The method assumes that the structure of networks is well described by the Popularity$\times$Similarity $\mathbb{S}^1/\mathbb{H}^2$ static geometric network model, which can accommodate arbitrary degree distributions and reproduces many pivotal properties of real networks, including self-similarity patterns. The algorithm mixes machine learning and maximum likelihood approaches to infer the coordinates of the nodes in the underlying hyperbolic disk with the best matching between the observed network topology and the geometric model. In its fast mode, Mercator uses a model-adjusted machine learning technique performing dimensional reduction to produce a fast and accurate map, whose quality already outperform other embedding algorithms in the literature. In the refined Mercator mode, the fast-mode embedding result is taken as an initial condition in a Maximum Likelihood estimation, which significantly improves the quality of the final embedding. Apart from its accuracy as an embedding tool, Mercator has the clear advantage of systematically inferring not only node orderings, or angular positions, but also the hidden degrees and global model parameters, and has the ability to embed networks with arbitrary degree distributions. Overall, our results suggest that mixing machine learning and maximum likelihood techniques in a model-dependent framework can boost the meaningful mapping of complex networks.

The increasing integration of world economies, which organize in complex multilayer networks of interactions, is one of the critical factors for the global propagation of economic crises. We adopt the network science approach to quantify shock propagation on the global trade-investment multiplex network. To this aim, we propose a model that couples a Susceptible-Infected-Recovered epidemic spreading dynamics, describing how economic distress propagates between connected countries, with an internal contagion mechanism, describing the spreading of such economic distress within a given country. At the local level, we find that the interplay between trade and financial interactions influences the vulnerabilities of countries to shocks. At the large scale, we find a simple linear relation between the relative magnitude of a shock in a country and its global impact on the whole economic system, albeit the strength of internal contagion is country-dependent and the intercountry propagation dynamics is non-linear. Interestingly, this systemic impact can be predicted on the basis of intra-layer and inter-layer scale factors that we name network multipliers, that are independent of the magnitude of the initial shock. Our model sets-up a quantitative framework to stress-test the robustness of individual countries and of the world economy to propagating crashes.

Albeit epidemic models have evolved into powerful predictive tools for the spread of diseases and opinions, most assume memoryless agents and independent transmission channels. We develop an infection mechanism that is endowed with memory of past exposures and simultaneously incorporates the joint effect of multiple infectious sources. Analytic equations and simulations of the susceptible-infected-susceptible model in unstructured substrates reveal the emergence of an additional phase that separates the usual healthy and endemic ones. This intermediate phase shows fundamentally distinct characteristics, and the system exhibits either excitability or an exotic variant of bistability. Moreover, the transition to endemicity presents hybrid aspects. The $\mathbb{S}^1$ model has been a central geometric model in the development of the field of network geometry. It has been mainly studied in its homogeneous regime, in which angular coordinates are independently and uniformly scattered on the circle. We now investigate if the model can generate networks with targeted topological features and soft communities, that is, heterogeneous angular distributions. Under these circumstances, hidden degrees must depend on angular coordinates and we propose a method to estimate them. We conclude that the model can be topologically invariant with respect to the soft-community structure. Our results might have important implications, both in expanding the scope of the model beyond the independent hidden variables limit and in the embedding of real-world networks.

Multiple scales coexist in complex networks. However, the small world property makes them strongly entangled. This turns the elucidation of length scales and symmetries a defiant challenge. Here, we define a geometric renormalization group for complex networks and use the technique to investigate networks as viewed at different scales. We find that real networks embedded in a hidden metric space show geometric scaling, in agreement with the renormalizability of the underlying geometric model. This allows us to unfold real scale-free networks in a self-similar multilayer shell which unveils the coexisting scales and their interplay. The multiscale unfolding offers a basis for a new approach to explore critical phenomena and universality in complex networks, and affords us immediate practical applications, like high-fidelity smaller-scale replicas of large networks and a multiscale navigation protocol in hyperbolic space which boosts the success of single-layer versions.

Collective leadership and herding may arise in standard models of opinion dynamics as an interplay of a strong separation of time scales within the population and its hierarchical organization. Using the voter model as a simple opinion formation model, we show that, in the herding phase, a group of agents become effectively the leaders of the dynamics while the rest of the population follow blindly their opinion. Interestingly, in some cases such herding dynamics accelerates the time to consensus, which then become size independent or, on the contrary, makes the consensus nearly impossible. These new behaviors have important consequences when an external noise is added to the system that makes consensus (absorbing) states to disappear. We analyze this new model which shows an interesting phase diagram, with a purely diffusive phase, a herding (or two-states) phase, and mixed phases where both behaviors are possible.

We show that real multiplex networks are unexpectedly robust against targeted attacks on high degree nodes, and that hidden interlayer geometric correlations predict this robustness. Without geometric correlations, multiplexes exhibit an abrupt breakdown of mutual connectivity, even with interlayer degree correlations. With geometric correlations, we instead observe a multistep cascading process leading into a continuous transition, which apparently becomes fully continuous in the thermodynamic limit. A general formalism is introduced to allow the steady state of non-Markovian processes on networks to be reduced to equivalent Markovian processes on the same substrates. The example of an epidemic spreading process is considered in detail, where all the non-Markovian aspects are shown to be captured within a single parameter, the effective infection rate. Remarkably, this result is independent of the topology of the underlying network, as demonstrated by numerical simulations on two-dimensional lattices and various types of random networks. Furthermore, an analytic approximation for the effective infection rate is introduced, which enables the calculation of the critical point and of the critical exponents for the non-Markovian dynamics.

Real networks often form interacting parts of larger and more complex systems. Examples can be found in different domains, ranging from the Internet to structural and functional brain networks. Here, we show that these multiplex systems are not random combinations of single network layers. Instead, they are organized in specific ways dictated by hidden geometric correlations between the individual layers. We find that these correlations are strong in different real multiplexes, and form a key framework for answering many important questions. Specifically, we show that these geometric correlations facilitate: (i) the definition and detection of multidimensional communities, which are sets of nodes that are simultaneously similar in multiple layers; (ii) accurate trans-layer link prediction, where connections in one layer can be predicted by observing the hidden geometric space of another layer; and (iii) efficient targeted navigation in the multilayer system using only local knowledge, which outperforms navigation in the single layers only if the geometric correlations are sufficiently strong. The topology of many real complex networks has been conjectured to be embedded in hidden metric spaces, where distances between nodes encode their likelihood of being connected. Besides of providing a natural geometrical interpretation of their complex topologies, this hypothesis yields the recipe for sustainable Internet's routing protocols, sheds light on the hierarchical organization of biochemical pathways in cells, and allows for a rich characterization of the evolution of international trade. We present empirical evidence that this geometric interpretation also applies to the weighted organisation of real complex networks. We introduce a very general and versatile model and use it to quantify the level of coupling between their topology, their weights, and an underlying metric space. Here, we present the World Trade Atlas 1870-2013, a collection of annual world trade maps in which distance combines economic size and the different dimensions that affect international trade beyond mere geography. Trade distances, which are based on a gravity model predicting the existence of significant trade channels, are such that the closer countries are in trade space, the greater their chance of becoming connected. The atlas provides us with information regarding the long-term evolution of the international trade system and demonstrates that, in terms of trade, the world is not flat but hyperbolic, as a reflection of its complex architecture. The departure from flatness has been increasing since World War I, meaning that differences in trade distances are growing and trade networks are becoming more hierarchical. Smaller-scale economies are moving away from other countries except for the largest economies; meanwhile those large economies are increasing their chances of becoming connected worldwide. At the same time, Preferential Trade Agreements do not fit in perfectly with natural communities within the trade space and have not necessarily reduced internal trade barriers. Represented as graphs, real networks are intricate combinations of order and disorder. Fixing some of the structural properties of network models to their values observed in real networks, many other properties appear as statistical consequences of these fixed observables, plus randomness in other respects. Here we employ the $dk$-series, a complete set of basic characteristics of the network structure, to study the statistical dependencies between different network properties. We consider six real networks---the Internet, US airport network, human protein interactions, technosocial web of trust, English word network, and an fMRI map of the human brain---and find that many important local and global structural properties of these networks are closely reproduced by $dk$-random graphs whose degree distributions, degree correlations, and clustering are as in the corresponding real network. We discuss important conceptual, methodological, and practical implications of this evaluation of network randomness, and release software to generate $dk$-random graphs.

The overwhelming success of online social networks, the key actors in the Web 2.0 cosmos, has reshaped human interactions globally. To help understand the fundamental mechanisms which determine the fate of online social networks at the system level, we describe the digital world as a complex ecosystem of interacting networks. In this paper, we study the impact of heterogeneity in network fitnesses on the competition between an international network, such as Facebook, and local services. The higher fitness of international networks is induced by their ability to attract users from all over the world, which can then establish social interactions without the limitations of local networks. In other words, inter-country social ties lead to increased fitness of the international network. To study the competition between an international network and local ones, we construct a 1:1000 scale model of the digital world, consisting of the 80 countries with the most Internet users. Under certain conditions, this leads to the extinction of local networks; whereas under different conditions, local networks can persist and even dominate completely. We deduce and discuss the implications of self-similarity for the stability in terms of robustness to failure of multiplexes, depending on interlayer degree correlations. First, we define self-similarity of multiplexes and we illustrate the concept in practice using the configuration model ensemble. Circumscribing robustness to survival of the mutually percolated state, we find a new explanation based on self-similarity both for the observed fragility of interconnected systems of networks and for their robustness to failure when interlayer degree correlations are present. Extending the self-similarity arguments, we show that interlayer degree correlations can change completely the stability properties of self-similar multiplexes, so that they can even recover a zero percolation threshold and a continuous transition in the thermodynamic limit, qualitatively exhibiting thus the ordinary stability attributes of noninteracting networks. All real networks are different, but many have some structural properties in common. There seems to be no consensus on what the most common properties are, but scale-free degree distributions, strong clustering, and community structure are frequently mentioned without question. Surprisingly, there exists no simple generative mechanism explaining all the three properties at once in growing networks. Here we show how latent network geometry coupled with preferential attachment of nodes to this geometry fills this gap. We call this mechanism geometric preferential attachment (GPA), and validate it against the Internet. GPA gives rise to soft communities that provide a different perspective on the community structure in networks. In standard models of opinion dynamics, herding behavior is only obeyed at the local scale due to the interaction of single agents with their neighbors; while at the global scale, such models are governed by purely diffusive processes. Surprisingly, in this paper we show that the combination of a strong separation of time scales within the population and a hierarchical organization of the influences of some agents on the others induces a phase transition between a purely diffusive phase, as in the standard case, and a herding phase where a fraction of the agents self-organize and lead the global opinion of the whole population.

In a recent work, a new numerical method (the lifespan method) has been introduced to study the critical properties of epidemic processes on complex networks [Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{111}, 068701 (2013)]. Here, we present a detailed analysis of the viability of this method for the study of the critical properties of generic absorbing-state phase transitions in lattices. Focusing on the well understood case of the contact process, we develop a finite-size scaling theory to measure the critical point and its associated critical exponents. We show the validity of the method by studying numerically the contact process on a one-dimensional lattice and comparing the findings of the lifespan method with the standard quasi-stationary method. We find that the lifespan method gives results that are perfectly compatible with those of quasi-stationary simulations and with analytical results. Our observations confirm that the lifespan method is a fully legitimate tool for the study of the critical properties of absorbing phase transitions in regular lattices.

The overwhelming success of the web 2.0, with online social networks as key actors, has induced a paradigm shift in the nature of human interactions. The user-driven character of these services for the first time has allowed researchers to quantify large-scale social patterns. However, the mechanisms that determine the fate of networks at a system level are still poorly understood. For instance, the simultaneous existence of numerous digital services naturally raises the question under which conditions these services can coexist. In analogy to population dynamics, the digital world is forming a complex ecosystem of interacting networks whose fitnesses depend on their ability to attract and maintain users' attention, which constitutes a limited resource. In this paper, we introduce an ecological theory of the digital world which exhibits a stable coexistence of several networks as well as the domination of a single one, in contrast to the principle of competitive exclusion. Interestingly, our model also predicts that the most probable outcome is the coexistence of a moderate number of services, in agreement with empirical observations.

We prove that complex networks of interactions have the capacity to regulate and buffer unpredictable fluctuations in production events. We show that non-bursty network-driven activation dynamics can effectively regulate the level of burstiness in the production of nodes, which can be enhanced or reduced. Burstiness can be induced even when the endogenous inter-event time distribution of nodes' production is non-bursty. We found that hubs tend to be less controllable than low degree nodes, which are more susceptible to the networked regulatory effects. Our results have important implications for the analysis and engineering of bursty activity in a range of systems, from telecommunication networks to transcription and translation of genes into proteins in cells.

Online social networks (OSNs) enable researchers to study the social universe at a previously unattainable scale. The worldwide impact and the necessity to sustain their rapid growth emphasize the importance to unravel the laws governing their evolution. We present a quantitative two-parameter model which reproduces the entire topological evolution of a quasi-isolated OSN with unprecedented precision from the birth of the network. This allows us to precisely gauge the fundamental macroscopic and microscopic mechanisms involved. Our findings suggest that the coupling between the real pre-existing underlying social structure, a viral spreading mechanism, and mass media influence govern the evolution of OSNs. The empirical validation of our model, on a macroscopic scale, reveals that virality is four to five times stronger than mass media influence and, on a microscopic scale, individuals have a higher subscription probability if invited by weaker social contacts, in agreement with the "strength of weak ties" paradigm.

Natural numbers can be divided in two non-overlapping infinite sets, primes and composites, with composites factorizing into primes. Despite their apparent simplicity, the elucidation of the architecture of natural numbers with primes as building blocks remains elusive. Here, we propose a new approach to decoding the architecture of natural numbers based on complex networks and stochastic processes theory. We introduce a parameter-free non-Markovian dynamical model that naturally generates random primes and their relation with composite numbers with remarkable accuracy. Our model satisfies the prime number theorem as an emerging property and a refined version of Cram\'er's conjecture about the statistics of gaps between consecutive primes that seems closer to reality than the original Cram\'er's version. Regarding composites, the model helps us to derive the prime factors counting function, giving the probability of distinct prime factors for any integer. Probabilistic models like ours can help to get deeper insights about primes and the complex architecture of natural numbers.

The internal organization of complex networks often has striking consequences on either their response to external perturbations or on their dynamical properties. In addition to small-world and scale-free properties, clustering is the most common topological characteristic observed in many real networked systems. In this paper, we report an extensive numerical study on the effects of clustering on the structural properties of complex networks. Strong clustering in heterogeneous networks induces the emergence of a core-periphery organization that has a critical effect on the percolation properties of the networks. We observe a novel double phase transition with an intermediate phase in which only the core of the network is percolated and a final phase in which the periphery percolates regardless of the core. This result implies breaking of the same symmetry at two different values of the control parameter, in stark contrast to the modern theory of continuous phase transitions. Networks often represent systems that do not have a long history of studies in traditional fields of physics, albeit there are some notable exceptions such as energy landscapes and quantum gravity. Here we consider networks that naturally arise in cosmology. Nodes in these networks are stationary observers uniformly distributed in an expanding open FLRW universe with any scale factor, and two observers are connected if one can causally influence the other. We show that these networks are growing Lorentz-invariant graphs with power-law distributions of node degrees. These networks encode maximum information about the observable universe available to a given observer.

We present a simple and general framework to simulate statistically correct realizations of a system of non-Markovian discrete stochastic processes. We give the exact analytical solution and a practical an efficient algorithm alike the Gillespie algorithm for Markovian processes, with the difference that now the occurrence rates of the events depend on the time elapsed since the event last took place. We use our non-Markovian generalized Gillespie stochastic simulation methodology to investigate the effects of non-exponential inter-event time distributions in the susceptible-infected-susceptible model of epidemic spreading. Strikingly, our results unveil the drastic effects that very subtle differences in the modeling of non-Markovian processes have on the global behavior of complex systems, with important implications for their understanding and prediction. We also assess our generalized Gillespie algorithm on a system of biochemical reactions with time delays. We uncover the global organization of clustering in real complex networks. As it happens with other fundamental properties of networks such as the degree distribution, we find that real networks are neither completely random nor ordered with respect to clustering, although they tend to be closer to maximally random architectures. We reach this conclusion by comparing the global structure of clustering in real networks with that in maximally random and in maximally ordered clustered graphs. The former are produced with an exponential random graph model that maintains correlations among adjacent edges at the minimum needed to conform with the expected clustering spectrum; the later with a random model that arranges triangles in cliques inducing highly ordered structures. To compare the global organization of clustering in real and model networks, we compute $m$-core landscapes, where the $m$-core is defined, akin to the $k$-core, as the maximal subgraph with edges participating at least in $m$ triangles. This property defines a set of nested subgraphs that, contrarily to $k$-cores, is able to distinguish between hierarchical and modular architectures. To visualize the $m$-core decomposition we developed the LaNet-vi 3.0 tool.

We develop an analytical approach to the susceptible-infected-susceptible (SIS) epidemic model that allows us to unravel the true origin of the absence of an epidemic threshold in heterogeneous networks. We find that a delicate balance between the number of high degree nodes in the network and the topological distance between them dictates the existence or absence of such a threshold. In particular, small-world random networks with a degree distribution decaying slower than an exponential have a vanishing epidemic threshold in the thermodynamic limit.

Popular music is a key cultural expression that has captured listeners' attention for ages. Many of the structural regularities underlying musical discourse are yet to be discovered and, accordingly, their historical evolution remains formally unknown. Here we unveil a number of patterns and metrics characterizing the generic usage of primary musical facets such as pitch, timbre, and loudness in contemporary western popular music. Many of these patterns and metrics have been consistently stable for a period of more than fifty years, thus pointing towards a great degree of conventionalism. Nonetheless, we prove important changes or trends related to the restriction of pitch transitions, the homogenization of the timbral palette, and the growing loudness levels. This suggests that our perception of the new would be rooted on these changing characteristics. We derive the finite size dependence of the clustering coefficient of scale-free random graphs generated by the configuration model with degree distribution exponent $2<\gamma<3$. Degree heterogeneity increases the presence of triangles in the network up to levels that compare to those found in many real networks even for extremely large nets. We also find that for values of $\gamma \approx 2$, clustering is virtually size independent and, at the same time, becomes a {\it de facto} non self-averaging topological property. This implies that a single instance network is not representative of the ensemble even for very large network sizes.

Prediction and control of the dynamics of complex networks is a central problem in network science. Structural and dynamical similarities of different real networks suggest that some universal laws might accurately describe the dynamics of these networks, albeit the nature and common origin of such laws remain elusive. Here we show that the causal network representing the large-scale structure of spacetime in our accelerating universe is a power-law graph with strong clustering, similar to many complex networks such as the Internet, social, or biological networks. We prove that this structural similarity is a consequence of the asymptotic equivalence between the large-scale growth dynamics of complex networks and causal networks. This equivalence suggests that unexpectedly similar laws govern the dynamics of complex networks and spacetime in the universe, with implications to network science and cosmology.

Many real networks are not isolated from each other but form networks of networks, often interrelated in non trivial ways. Here, we analyze an epidemic spreading process taking place on top of two interconnected complex networks. We develop a heterogeneous mean field approach that allows us to calculate the conditions for the emergence of an endemic state. Interestingly, a global endemic state may arise in the coupled system even though the epidemics is not able to propagate on each network separately, and even when the number of coupling connections is small. Our analytic results are successfully confronted against large-scale numerical simulations.

Metabolism is a fascinating cell machinery underlying life and disease and genome-scale reconstructions provide us with a captivating view of its complexity. However, deciphering the relationship between metabolic structure and function remains a major challenge. In particular, turning observed structural regularities into organizing principles underlying systemic functions is a crucial task that can be significantly addressed after endowing complex network representations of metabolism with the notion of geometric distance. Here, we design a cartographic map of metabolic networks by embedding them into a simple geometry that provides a natural explanation for their observed network topology and that codifies node proximity as a measure of hidden structural similarities. We assume a simple and general connectivity law that gives more probability of interaction to metabolite/reaction pairs which are closer in the hidden space. Remarkably, we find an astonishing congruency between the architecture of E. coli and human cell metabolisms and the underlying geometry. In addition, the formalism unveils a backbone-like structure of connected biochemical pathways on the basis of a quantitative cross-talk. Pathways thus acquire a new perspective which challenges their classical view as self-contained functional units.
