Abstract

The OpenUniverse2024 simulation suite is a cross-collaboration effort to produce matched simulated imaging for multiple surveys as they would observe a common simulated sky. Both the simulated data and associated tools used to produce it are intended to uniquely enable a wide range of studies to maximize the science potential of the next generation of cosmological surveys. We have produced simulated imaging for approximately 70 deg$^2$ of the Vera C. Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) Wide-Fast-Deep survey and the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope High-Latitude Wide-Area Survey, as well as overlapping versions of the ELAIS-S1 Deep-Drilling Field for LSST and the High-Latitude Time-Domain Survey for Roman. OpenUniverse2024 includes i) an early version of the updated extragalactic model called Diffsky, which substantially improves the realism of optical and infrared photometry of objects, compared to previous versions of these models; ii) updated transient models that extend through the wavelength range probed by Roman and Rubin; and iii) improved survey, telescope, and instrument realism based on up-to-date survey plans and known properties of the instruments. It is built on a new and updated suite of simulation tools that improves the ease of consistently simulating multiple observatories viewing the same sky. The approximately 400 TB of synthetic survey imaging and simulated universe catalogs are publicly available, and we preview some scientific uses of the simulations.

Methods: Patients with stage I NSCLC who received SBRT from 2007 to 2015 were reviewed. Computed tomography (CT) simulation with four-dimensional CT was performed for respiratory motion assessment. Tumor motion >1 cm in the craniocaudal direction was selectively treated with advanced respiratory management: either respiratory gating to a pre-specified portion of the respiratory cycle or dynamic tracking of an implanted fiducial marker. Comparisons were made with internal target volume approach, which treated all phases of respiratory motion. Results: Of 297 patients treated with SBRT at our institution, 51 underwent advanced respiratory management (48 with respiratory gating and three with tumor tracking) and 246 underwent all-phase treatment. Groups were similarly balanced with regard to mean age (P=0.242), tumor size (P=0.315), and histology (P=0.715). Abstract

The Vera Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) is expected to process ${\sim}10^6$ transient detections per night. For precision measurements of cosmological parameters and rates, it is critical to understand the detection efficiency, magnitude limits, artifact contamination levels, and biases in the selection and photometry. Here we rigorously test the LSST Difference Image Analysis (DIA) pipeline using simulated images from the Rubin Observatory LSST Dark Energy Science Collaboration (DESC) Data Challenge (DC2) simulation for the Wide-Fast-Deep (WFD) survey area. DC2 is the first large-scale (300 deg$^2$) image simulation of a transient survey that includes realistic cadence, variable observing conditions, and CCD image artifacts. We analyze ${\sim}$15 deg$^2$ of DC2 over a 5-year time-span in which artificial point-sources from Type Ia Supernovae (SNIa) light curves have been overlaid onto the images. We measure the detection efficiency as a function of Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) and find a $50\%$ efficiency at $\rm{SNR}=5.8$. The magnitude limits for each filter are: $u=23.66$, $g=24.69$, $r=24.06$, $i=23.45$, $z=22.54$, $y=21.62$ $\rm{mag}$. The artifact contamination is $\sim90\%$ of detections, corresponding to $\sim1000$ artifacts/deg$^2$ in $g$ band, and falling to 300 per deg$^2$ in $y$ band. The photometry has biases $<1\%$ for magnitudes $19.5 < m <23$. Our DIA performance on simulated images is similar to that of the Dark Energy Survey pipeline applied to real images. We also characterize DC2 image properties to produce catalog-level simulations needed for distance bias corrections. We find good agreement between DC2 data and simulations for distributions of SNR, redshift, and fitted light-curve properties. Abstract

We describe here the most ambitious survey currently planned in the optical, the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope (LSST). The LSST design is driven by four main science themes: probing dark energy and dark matter, taking an inventory of the solar system, exploring the transient optical sky, and mapping the Milky Way. LSST will be a large, wide-field ground-based system designed to obtain repeated images covering the sky visible from Cerro Pachón in northern Chile. The telescope will have an 8.4 m (6.5 m effective) primary mirror, a 9.6 deg 2 field of view, a 3.2-gigapixel camera, and six filters (ugrizy) covering the wavelength range 320-1050 nm. The project is in the construction phase and will begin regular survey operations by 2022. About 90% of the observing time will be devoted to a deep-wide-fast survey mode that will uniformly observe a 18,000 deg 2 region about 800 times (summed over all six bands) during the anticipated 10 yr of operations and will yield a co-added map to r ∼27.5. These data will result in databases including about 32 trillion observations of 20 billion galaxies and a similar number of stars, and they will serve the majority of the primary science programs. The remaining 10% of the observing time will be allocated to special projects such as Very Deep and Very Fast time domain surveys, whose details are currently under discussion. We illustrate how the LSST science drivers led to these choices of system parameters, and we describe the expected data products and their characteristics.

Abstract

This paper presents the simulation of the GLAST high energy gamma-ray telescope. The simulation package, written in C++, is based on the Geant4 toolkit, and it is integrated into a general framework used to process events. A detailed simulation of the electronic signals inside Silicon detectors has been provided and it is used for the particle tracking, which is handled by a dedicated software. Abstract

The GLAST LAT calibration infrastructure is designed to accommodate a wide range of time-varying data types, including at a minimum hardware status bits, conversion constants, and alignment for the GLAST LAT instrument and its prototypes. The system will support persistent XML and ROOT data to begin with; other physical formats will be added if necessary. In addition to the "bulk data", each data set will have associated with it a row in a rdbms table containing metadata, such as timestamps, data format, pointer to the location of the bulk data, etc., which will be used to identify and locate the appropriate data set for a particular application. As GLAST uses the Gaudi framework for event processing, the Calibration Infrastructure makes use of several Gaudi elements and concepts, such as conversion services, converters and data objects and implements the prescribed Gaudi interfaces (IDetDataSvc, IValidity, ..). This insures that calibration data will always be valid and appropriate for the event being processed. Abstract

The Vera Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) is expected to process ∼106 transient detections per night. For precision measurements of cosmological parameters and rates, it is critical to understand the detection efficiency, magnitude limits, artifact contamination levels, and biases in the selection and photometry. Here we rigorously test the LSST Difference Image Analysis (DIA) pipeline using simulated images from the Rubin Observatory LSST Dark Energy Science Collaboration Data Challenge (DC2) simulation for the Wide-Fast-Deep survey area. DC2 is the first large-scale (300 deg2) image simulation of a transient survey that includes realistic cadence, variable observing conditions, and CCD image artifacts. We analyze ∼15 deg2 of DC2 over a 5 yr time span in which artificial point sources from Type Ia supernova (SNIa) light curves have been overlaid onto the images. The magnitude limits per filter are u = 23.66 mag, g = 24.69 mag, r = 24.06 mag, i = 23.45 mag, z = 22.54 mag, and y = 21.62 mag. The artifact contamination levels are ∼90% of all detections, corresponding to ∼1000 artifacts deg–2 in g band, and falling to 300 deg–2 in y band. The photometry has biases <1% for magnitudes 19.5 < m < 23. Our DIA performance on simulated images is similar to that of the Dark Energy Survey difference-imaging pipeline on real images. We also characterize DC2 image properties to produce catalog-level simulations needed for distance bias corrections. We find good agreement between DC2 data and simulations for distributions of signal-to-noise ratio, redshift, and fitted light-curve properties. Applying a realistic SNIa cosmology analysis for redshifts z < 1, we recover the input cosmology parameters to within statistical uncertainties.

SBRT doses were 37.5–50Gy in 3–5 fractions treating twelve lesions.Results: Three patients (ages 9, 11, and 21) received photon SBRT for pulmonary metastases. The patients were as follows: 1) 21-year-old male with favorable histology Wilms tumor and 1 lesion treated, 2) 11-year-old female with Ewing sarcoma and 1 lesion treated for relapse after previous whole lung radiation (15Gy), and 3) 9-year-old female with rhabdoid tumor of the left thigh with 10 lesions treated over a two-year period. Median dose delivered was 40Gy (range, 37.5–50Gy), delivered in a median of 4 fractions (range, 4–5) of a median of 10Gy per fraction (range, 9.4–10Gy). Within a minimum follow-up of 1.9years (range 1.9–4years), local control for all 13 treated metastases is 100% without any observed acute toxicities. One possible late toxicity (grade 2 rib fracture) developed 1.3years following SBRT for treatment of a peripheral lesion (rhabdoid tumor) in an area of disease progression and was managed conservatively. Two patients are surviving 2.9years (Wilms tumor) and 1.9years (Ewing sarcoma) after SBRT, and one (rhabdoid tumor) expired 2years after her final course (4years after initial SBRT). Two patients (rhabdoid tumor and Ewing sarcoma) suffered disease progression outside of the treated lesions and one patient (Wilms tumor) is without evidence of disease and has not required whole lung irradiation or further systemic therapy.Conclusion: SBRT appears effective and well tolerated for pediatric lung metastases, however further studies are warranted.Keywords: SBRT, lung metastases, pediatric oncology, Ewing’s sarcoma, Wilms tumor, rhabdoid tumor

We hypothesized that tumor response after CRT would be associated with hematologic metrics and might predict clinical outcomes.Materials and Methods: Patients with stage III NSCLC treated at a single institution between 2011 and 2018 were retrospectively reviewed. Pre-treatment gross tumor volume (GTV) was recorded then reassessed at 1– 4 months post-CRT. Complete blood counts before, during and after treatment were recorded. Systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) was defined as neutrophil × platelet/lymphocyte. Overall survival (OS) and progression free survival (PFS) were calculated using Kaplan-Meier estimates, and compared with Wilcoxon tests. A multivariate analysis of hematologic factors impacting restricted mean survival was then performed using pseudovalue regression, accounting for other baseline factors.Results: 106 patients were included. After median follow-up of 24 months, median PFS and OS were 16 and 40 months, respectively. Within the multivariate model, baseline SII was associated with OS (p = 0.046) but not PFS (p = 0.09), and baseline ALC correlated with both PFS and OS (p = 0.03 and p = 0.02, respectively). Nadir ALC, nadir SII, and recovery SII were not associated with PFS or OS.Conclusion: In this cohort of patients with stage III NSCLC, baseline hematologic factors were associated with clinical outcomes including baseline ALC, baseline SII and recovery ALC. Abstract

Based on a sample of approximately 500,000 hadronic Z0 decays accumulated between 1993 and 1998, the SLD experiment has set limits on 24 fully charged two-body and quasi two-body exclusive charmless hadronic decays of B+, B0, and B0_s mesons. The precise tracking capabilities of the SLD detector provided for the efficient reduction of combinatoric backgrounds, yielding the most precise available limits for ten of these modes., Comment: LaTex, 11 pages, 2 figures, uses RevTeX.
