Many primary school students in the Netherlands struggle with reading comprehension, especially when it comes to higher-order comprehension skills, such as summarizing. Scientific literature has suggested various ways to foster text comprehension, for example by providing explicit instruction about text structures (e.g., cause-effect, chronology), as this might foster the construction of a solid mental representation of the text: a coherent situation model (e.g., see Meyer & Ray, 2011). A text structure is the underlying skeleton of a text that organizes all the information. Text structure can be defined as the organization of ideas, the relationship among the ideas and the vocabulary used to convey meaning to the reader” (Pyle et al., 2017:1; see also Armbruster, 2004). What if we would teach children in primary school about text structures? Our meta-analysis showed that explicit instruction about narrative and informative text structures yields positive immediate effects on students' reading comprehension, and that effects vary across outcome measures: recall tasks (g = 0.37), summarization (g = 0.57), reading comprehension tests (g = 0.25), and text structure knowledge tests (g = 0.38) for students in the upper elementary grades. The moderator analysis revealed that content-related features such as a focus on paragraph-level structure, active construction of graphic organizers, and rule-based summarization techniques moderated the effectiveness, but these effects also varied with outcome measure. The mixed-methods study examined the state-of-affairs analysis of the current Dutch primary school reading curriculum for grades 4 and 5. The data are based on a materials analysis of reading comprehension lessons (n = 80) in eight textbooks for grades 4 and 5, supplemented with semi-structured teacher interviews (n = 29) and lesson observations (n = 11). Main findings were (1) a lack of alignment between lesson goals, theory, and assignments, (2) a strong focus on practicing strategies, (3) limited declarative knowledge about strategies and text structure, (4) little opportunities for selfregulated strategy application, and (5) strong emphasis on individual question answering. Therefore, a lesson series on text structure was developed in a design-based research in close collaboration with four teachers. Based on data from lesson artefacts, logbooks, panel interviews, and lesson observations, this study revealed several difficulties related to the design principles and their implementation in practice, and identified several areas in which teachers' pedagogical content knowledge about reading comprehension could be strenghthened. This lesson series was then tested for its effectiveness among 201 students in a switching-panels replication design with three measurement occasions. There were positive effects on writing skills for all students, but the effects on reading, summarizing, and metacognitive knowledge varied between intervention groups. This variability in effects raised questions about the exact lesson implementation. In the final study, we closely monitored three teachers and their students in another implementation of the intervention. Implementation fidelity scores varied across teachers and lesson phases, with the lowest scores for collaborative learning (51%) and the highest for explicit instruction (91%).This study generated useful insights for the professionalization of teachers and reinforcement of teaching materials for reading comprehension instruction.

The EMMC Translators Guide provides a vision for industrial users (Clients) how to benefit from a systematic materials modelling translation process, that covers translating an industrial need/challenge into a solution by means of materials modelling and simulation tools. The experts that are performing this process of providing a Translation service are called Translators in Materials Modelling. They often act as a team and propose an assistance and consulting for companies. Translator(s) can be either academics, software owners, independent consultants, modellers or code developers with the relevant expertise, and even be employees of the Client company. The EMMC Translation concept for materials modelling was collaboratively developed by engaged European Stakeholders from industry and academia in a bottom-up approach facilitated by the European Union and the EMMC within the EMMC-CSA project. The aim of the Translators Guide is providing Translators with an (orientation) basis which they may follow in an agile and personalised way, to facilitate and safeguard a successful and efficient mutually agreed workflow (course of action) in an industrially oriented modelling project. In the current contribution, we aim to further contextualise the Translators Guide with Translation scenarios that have evolved since the EMMC-CSA project ended in 2019. The interdisciplinary team of authors will give an outlook focussing on tools under development, opportunities upon maturing (learning by doing) and challenges from diversification that we expect to manifest in the 2020s.

Efforts were especially spent to find cases of translation carried out by or for Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs). In the context of EMMC, translation is the process of translating industrial problems into questions to be solved using modelling and simulations tools for, e.g., creating industrial innovation. The role of the translator is to advice the end-user on the defining viable possibilities to integrate modelling to solve the industrial issue, propose modelling workflows as related to the manufacturing problem and available data, time and resources (knowledge/competencies, SW tools, people) as well as limitations. The major outcome of this activity has been to produce 17 use cases of translation that display the use of materials modelling in industry, also SMEs, and highlight the benefits. The report contains two parts: 17 translation case studies, 10 of which refer to SMEs. A report analysing the process of collection and compilation of the case studies, as well as an analysis of the results.

The EMMC Roadmap defines a path forward for materials modelling and digitalisation of materials sciences. It is the culmination of five years of knowledge‐ and experience‐gathering, by the EMMC, on the needs of European materials industry in the modelling field. The EMMC Roadmap acknowledges the significant progress that has been made over the past years, but equally identifies gaps, and provides direction for achieving the ultimate vision of: Having an agile European materials industry with intelligent enterprises that maximise and integrate the utility of digital materials sciences knowledge &nbsp

Modeling heeft de laatste jaren aan populariteit gewonnen, ook in het leesonderwijs. Het is echter de vraag of iedereen deze instructievorm hetzelfde definieert en weet welke kenmerken modeling tot een effectief didactisch instrument maken. Dat is belangrijk, zowel voor lerarenopleiders als voor leerkrachten en docenten die zich alleen of in teamverband verder willen professionaliseren. Terecht stellen Schutz en Rainey (2019) in hun artikel daarom dat het tijd is om te verhelderen wat modeling inhoudt en welke belangrijke componenten modeling effectief maken.

The Translators Guide is instrumental in building awareness and confidence in applying modelling for a broader adoption, in particular by small medium enterprises (SMEs). It is a tool that can be used not only by Translators but also by industrial users of modelling, specifically to know what to expect from Translators and from the process itself. The goal of the Translators Guide is to help translators when approaching industry, when defining/choosing the right modelling workflow and when defining the benefits of the modelling project. It gives directions on possible ways to execute transition. It is up to the Translator to decide/choose how to accommodate the guidelines described in this document. The choice depends, for example, on the type of industry and on the level of modelling required. The Translators Guide describes the methodology and the possible scenarios for the translation, for large companies and for SMEs.

The aim of the European Materials Modelling Council (EMMC) is to establish current and forward looking complementary activities necessary to bring the field of materials modelling closer to the demands of manufacturers (both small and large enterprises) in Europe. The ultimate goal is that materials modelling and simulation will become an integral part of product life cycle management in European industry, thereby making a strong contribution to enhance innovation and competitiveness on a global level. Based on intensive efforts in the past two years within the EMMC, which included numerous consultation and networking actions with representatives of all stakeholders including Modellers, Software Owners, Translators and Manufacturers in Europe, the EMMC identified and proposed a set of underpinning and enabling actions to increase the industrial exploitation of materials modelling in Europe. EMMC will pursue the following overarching objectives in order to bridge the gap between academic innovation and industrial application: • enhance the interaction and collaboration between all stakeholders engaged in different types of materials modelling, including modellers, software owners, translators and manufacturers, • facilitate integrated materials modelling in Europe building on strong and coherent foundations, • coordinate and support actors and mechanisms that enable rapid transfer of materials modelling from academic innovation to the end users and potential beneficiaries in industry, • achieve greater awareness and uptake of materials modelling in industry, in particular SMEs, • elaborate Roadmaps that (i) identify major obstacles to widening the use of materials modelling and (ii) elaborate strategies to overcome them.

Rubber-silica nanocomposites containing 10 wt % silica were prepared using in situ hydrolysis and condensation of tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) in the presence of n-hexylamine as catalyst in two rubber matrices, namely, natural rubber and ethylene-propylene diene rubber. The structure of sol-gel synthesized silica, mapped by solid-state NMR spectroscopy and XPS, indicated the presence of remnant ethoxy groups inside the silica particles and on the silica surface, while hexylamine resided preferentially at the silica surface stabilized via hydrogen bonding of the ethoxy and chemisorption of the hexylamine. Thus, the preparation of sol-gel synthesized silica results in the formation of so-called hairy silica particles with increased hydrophobic properties. The combinatory technique FTIR-TGA-MS confirms the complex chemistry of the solgel synthesized silica as well as the low amount of residual ethanol present in the particles and the in situ rubber-silica nanocomposite, the latter aspect being important when industrial manufacturing and application of in situ rubber-silica nanocomposites is considered. It is further shown that (i) the particular surface chemistry, (ii) the phenomena of entrapped rubber chains inside the silica nanoparticles, and (iii) morphology of the sol-gel synthesized silica nanoparticles lead to a more intimate interaction with the rubber matrix, which may be fine-tuned toward improved mechanical properties.
