Coherent spin resonance methods such as nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy have led to spectrally highly sensitive, non-invasive quantum imaging techniques with groundbreaking applications in fields such as medicine, biology, and physics. Meanwhile, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) offers detailed investigations with sub-atomic resolution, but often inflicts significant radiation damage. Here we exploit synergies and report on an integration of ESR spectroscopy in a TEM. Our miniaturized ESR setup on a standard TEM sample holder leverages the strong magnetic field of the TEM polepiece to align and energetically separate spin states. This integration will facilitate in-situ studies of spin systems and their dynamics, quantum materials, radicals, electrochemical reactions, and radiation damage - properties previously mainly invisible to electron microscopic tools. Solid-state electrolytes mark a significant leap forward in the field of electrochemical energy storage, offering improved safety and efficiency compared to conventional liquid electrolytes. Among these, antiperovskite electrolytes, particularly those based on Li and Na, have emerged as promising candidates due to their superior ionic conductivity and straightforward synthesis processes. This study focuses on the amorphous phase of antiperovskite Na$_3$OCl, assessing its structural properties through a combination of first-principles molecular dynamics (FPMD) and machine learning interatomic potential (MLIP) simulations. Our comprehensive analysis spans models ranging from 135 to 3645 atoms, allowing for a detailed examination of X-ray and neutron structure factors, total and partial pair correlation functions, coordination numbers, and structural unit distributions. We demonstrate the minimal, albeit partially present, size effects on these structural features and validate the accuracy of the MLIP model in reproducing the intricate details of the amorphous Na$_3$OCl structure described at the FPMD level., Comment: 6 Figures and 3 Tables

We report the development of a continuous-wave and pulsed X-band electron spin resonance (ESR) spectrometer for the study of spins on ordered surfaces down to cryogenic temperatures. The spectrometer operates in ultra-high vacuum and utilizes a half-wavelength microstrip line resonator realized using epitaxially grown copper films on single crystal Al$_2$O$_3$ substrates. The one-dimensional microstrip line resonator exhibits a quality factor of more than 200 at room temperature, close to the upper limit determined by radiation losses. The surface characterizations of the copper strip of the resonator by atomic force microscope, low-energy electron diffraction, and scanning tunneling microscope show that the surface is atomically clean, flat, and single crystalline. Measuring the ESR spectrum at 15 K from a few nm thick molecular film of YPc$_2$, we find a continuous-wave ESR sensitivity of $2.6 \cdot 10^{11}~\text{spins}/\text{G} \cdot \text{Hz}^{1/2}$ indicating that a signal-to-noise ratio of $3.9~\text{G} \cdot \text{Hz}^{1/2}$ is expected from a monolayer of YPc$_2$ molecules. The non-Gaussian Cold Spot (CS) surrounded by its hot ring is one of the most striking features of the CMB. It has been speculated that either new physics or ISW effect induced by the presence of a cosmic void at high redshift can account for the observations. Here we investigate if the systematic decrease in CMB temperature in the neighbourhood of nearby galaxies may create such a strong temperature depression. In particular, we note that the Eridanus supergroup and its neighbouring groups, is in the CS area. Our goal is to analyse observational galaxy data to characterise the neighbourhood of the CS, explore the properties of these galaxies and thereby make a prediction of the CMB temperature decrement in this region. We use the Planck SMICA maps and the galaxy catalogues 2MRS, 6dF and HIPASS as foreground tracers. We apply mean temperature profiles to model the temperature decrement from the galaxies in the CS area. Even after correcting for the mean low temperature of the CS region, we find that the temperature decrement around galaxies is significantly stronger than the mean decrement in other parts of the sky. We discuss whether this could be attributed to the fact that the CS area coincides with one of the regions populated by the most HI deficient galaxies. Modelling the foreground temperature profile, we find a particularly strong temperature decrement due to the presence of the late-type overabundant largest group complex in the nearby universe. A CS shape, which to a large degree overlaps with the CMB CS, is observed. We conclude that the coincidence of the only nearby spiral rich group complex located in the CS region, and the success of the modelling performed, adds strong evidence to the existence of a local extragalactic foreground which could account for the observed temperature depression, alleviating the tension with an otherwise Gaussian field expected in the CMB., Comment: 6 pages, 8 figures. We propose a method for providing communication network infrastructure in autonomous multi-agent teams. In particular, we consider a set of communication agents that are placed alongside regular agents from the system in order to improve the rate of information transfer between the latter. In order to find the optimal positions to place such agents, we define a flexible performance function that adapts to network requirements for different systems. We provide an algorithm based on shadow prices of a related convex optimization problem in order to drive the configuration of the complete system towards a local maximum. We apply our method to three different performance functions associated with three practical scenarios in which we show both the performance of the algorithm and the flexibility it allows for optimizing different network requirements., Comment: (c) 2023 IEEE. In Luparello et al. 2023, a new and hitherto unknown CMB foreground was detected. A systematic decrease in Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperatures around nearby large spiral galaxies points to an unknown interaction with CMB photons in a sphere up to several projected Mpc around these galaxies. We investigate to which extent this foreground may impact the CMB fluctuations map and create the so-called CMB anomalies. Using the observed temperature decrements around the galaxies, and making some general assumptions about the unknown interaction, we propose a common radial temperature profile. By assigning this profile to nearby galaxies in the redshift range $z=[0.004,0.02]$ we create a foreground map model. We find a remarkable resemblance between this temperature model map based on nearby galaxies and the Planck CMB map. Out of 1000 simulated maps, none of them show such a strong correlation with the foreground map over both large and small angular scales. In particular, the quadrupole, octopole, as well as $\ell=4$ and $\ell=5$ modes correlate with the foreground map to high significance. Furthermore, one of the most prominent temperature decrements in the foreground map coincides with the position of the CMB cold spot. The largest scales of the CMB and thereby the cosmological parameters, may have important changes after proper corrections of this foreground component. {Using two different approaches, we study imaging in the strong lens regime taking into account the effects of plasmatic environments on light propagation. First, we extend the use of a perturbative approach that allows us to quickly and analytically calculate the position and shape of the images of a circular source lensed by a galaxy. Such approach will be compared with that obtained from the numerical solution of the lens equations. Secondly, we introduce a 3-dimensional spheroidal model to describe the spacetime associated with the dark matter halo around the lens galaxy and an associated optical metric to incorporate the presence of the plasma medium. The (chromatic) deformation on caustic and critical curves and associated multiplicity of images is also analyzed for particular configurations.

Ionic liquids (ILs) feature a tailorable and wide range of structural, chemical and electronic properties that make this class of materials suitable to a broad variety of forefront applications in next-generation electronics. Yet, their intrinsic complexity call for special attention and experimental probes have still limitations in unraveling the interactions occurring both in the bulk IL and at the interface with the solid substrates used to build the devices. This works provides an atomistic insight into these fundamental interactions by molecular modeling to complement the information still not accessible to experiments. In particular, we shed some light on the nature of the chemical bonding, structure, charge distribution and dipolar properties of a series of alkyl-imidazolium-based ILs by a synergy of classical and first-principles molecular dynamics simulations. Special emphasis is given to the crucial issue of the hydrogen bond network formation ability depending either on the nature of the anion or on the length of the alkyl chain of the cation. The hydrogen bond strength is a fundamental indicator of the cohesive and ordering features of the ILs and, in this respect, might be exploited to foster a different behaviour of the IL used a bulk medium or when used in electronic devices.
