A first-principles approach based on Density Functional Theory and Non-Equilibrium Green's functions is used to study the molecular transport system consisting of benzenedithiolate connected with monoatomic gold and platinum electrodes. Using symmetry arguments we explain why the conductance mechanism is different for gold and platinum electrodes. We present the charge stability diagram for the benzenedithiolate connected with monoatomic platinum electrodes including many-body effects in terms of an extended Hubbard Hamiltonian and discuss how the electrodes and the many-body effects influence the transport properties of the system.

The short coherence lengths characteristic of low-dimensional superconductors are associated with usefully high critical fields or temperatures. Unfortunately, such materials are often sensitive to disorder and suffer from phase fluctuations in the superconducting order parameter which diverge with temperature $T$, magnetic field $H$ or current $I$. We propose an approach to overcome synthesis and fluctuation problems: building superconductors from inhomogeneous composites of nanofilaments. Macroscopic crystals of quasi-one-dimensional Na$_{2-\delta}$Mo$_6$Se$_6$ featuring Na vacancy disorder ($\delta\approx$~0.2) are shown to behave as percolative networks of superconducting nanowires. Long range order is established via transverse coupling between individual one-dimensional filaments, yet phase coherence remains unstable to fluctuations and localization in the zero-($T$,$H$,$I$) limit. However, a region of reentrant phase coherence develops upon raising ($T$,$H$,$I$). We attribute this phenomenon to an enhancement of the transverse coupling due to electron delocalization. Our observations of reentrant phase coherence coincide with a peak in the Josephson energy $E_J$ at non-zero ($T$,$H$,$I$), which we estimate using a simple analytical model for a disordered anisotropic superconductor. Na$_{2-\delta}$Mo$_6$Se$_6$ is therefore a blueprint for a future generation of nanofilamentary superconductors with inbuilt resilience to phase fluctuations at elevated ($T$,$H$,$I$)., Comment: 40 pages including Supporting Information, 5 figures. A powerful approach to analysing quantum systems with dimensionality $d>1$ involves adding a weak coupling to an array of one-dimensional (1D) chains. The resultant quasi-one-dimensional (q1D) systems can exhibit long-range order at low temperature, but are heavily influenced by interactions and disorder due to their large anisotropies. Real q1D materials are therefore ideal candidates not only to provoke, test and refine theories of strongly correlated matter, but also to search for unusual emergent electronic phases. Here we report the unprecedented enhancement of a superconducting instability by disorder in single crystals of Na$_{2-\delta}$Mo$_6$Se$_6$, a q1D superconductor comprising MoSe chains weakly coupled by Na atoms. We argue that disorder-enhanced Coulomb pair-breaking (which usually destroys superconductivity) may be averted due to a screened long-range Coulomb repulsion intrinsic to disordered q1D materials. We report a combination of Fe K$\beta$ x-ray emission spectroscopy and $ab$-intio calculations to investigate the correlation between structural and magnetic degrees of freedom in CaFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x} $)$_{2}$. The puzzling temperature behavior of the local moment found in rare earth-doped CaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ [\textit{H. Gretarsson, et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 110}, 047003 (2013)}] is also observed in CaFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$. We explain this phenomenon based on first-principles calculations with scaled magnetic interaction. One scaling parameter is sufficient to describe quantitatively the magnetic moments in both CaFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x} $)$_{2}$ ($x=0.055$) and Ca$_{0.78}% $La$_{0.22}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ at all temperatures. The anomalous growth of the local moments with increasing temperature can be understood from the observed large thermal expansion of the $c$-axis lattice parameter combined with strong magnetoelastic coupling. These effects originate from the strong tendency to form As-As dimers across the Ca layer in the CaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ family of materials. Our results emphasize the dual local-itinerant character of magnetism in Fe pnictides.

We report an experimental and theoretical investigation of the electron-boson interaction in KFe2As2 by point-contact (PC) spectroscopy, model, and ab-initio LDA-based calculations for the standard electron-phonon Eliashberg function. The PC spectrum viz. the second derivative of the I - V characteristic of representative PC exhibits a pronounced maximum at about 20meV and surprisingly a featureless behavior at lower and higher energies. We discuss phonon and non-phonon (excitonic) mechanisms for the origin of this peak. Analysis of the underlying source of this peak may be important for the understanding of serious puzzles of superconductivity in this type of compounds., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figs., to be published in PRB

We investigate the superconducting pairing instabilities of eight-band models for the iron arsenides. Using a functional renormalization group treatment, we determine how the critical energy scale for superconductivity depends on the electronic band structure. Most importantly, if we vary the parameters from values corresponding to LaFeAsO to SmFeAsO, the pairing scale is strongly enhanced, in accordance with the experimental observation. We analyze the reasons for this trend and compare the results of the eight-band approach to those found using five-band models., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures

We present high-quality optical data and density functional perturbation theory calculations for the vibrational spectrum of solid picene (C$_{22}$H$_{14}$) under pressure up to 8 GPa. First-principles calculations reproduce with a remarkable accuracy the pressure effects on both frequency and intensities of the phonon peaks experimentally observed . Through a detailed analysis of the phonon eigenvectors, We use the projection on molecular eigenmodes to unambiguously fit the experimental spectra, resolving complicated spectral structures, in a system with hundreds of phonon modes. With these projections, we can also quantify the loss of molecular character under pressure. Our results indicate that picene, despite a \sim 20 % compression of the unit cell, remains substantially a molecular solid up to 8 GPa, with phonon modes displaying a smooth and uniform hardening with pressure. The Grueneisen parameter of the 1380 cm^{-1} a_1 Raman peak ($\gamma_p=0.1$) is much lower than the effective value ($\gamma_d=0.8$) due to K doping. This is an indication that the phonon softening in K doped samples is mainly due to charge transfer and electron-phonon coupling., Comment: Replaced with final version (PRB)

Recently, Mitsuhashi et al., have observed superconductivity with transition temperature up to 18 K in potassium doped picene (C22H14), a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon compound [Nature 464 (2010) 76]. Theoretical analysis indicate the importance of electron-phonon coupling in the superconducting mechanisms of these systems, with different emphasis on inter- and intra-molecular vibrations, depending on the approximations used. Here we present a combined experimental and ab-initio study of the Raman and infrared spectrum of undoped solid picene, which allows us to unanbiguously assign the vibrational modes. This combined study enables the identification of the modes which couple strongly to electrons and hence can play an important role in the superconducting properties of the doped samples.

We present a method to correct the magnetic properties of itinerant systems in local spin density approximation (LSDA) and we apply it to the ferromagnetic-paramagnetic transition under pressure in a typical itinerant system, Ni$_{3}$Al. We obtain a scaling of the critical fluctuations as a function of pressure equivalent to the one obtained within Moryia's theory. Moreover we show that in this material the role of the bandstructure is crucial in driving the transition. Finally we calculate the magnetic moment as a function of pressure, and find that it gives a scaling of the Curie temperature that is in good agreement with the experiment. The method can be easily extended to the antiferromagnetic case and applied, for instance, to the Fe-pnictides in order to correct the LSDA magnetic moment., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

We report an investigation of the lattice dynamical properties in a range of Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$ compounds, with special emphasis on the c-axis polarized vibration of Fe with B$_{1g}$ symmetry, a Raman active mode common to all families of Fe-based superconductors. We have carried out a systematic study of the temperature dependence of this phonon mode as a function of Se $x$ and excess Fe $y$ concentrations. In parent compound Fe$_{1+y}$Te, we observe an unconventional broadening of the phonon between room temperature and magnetic ordering temperature $T_N$. The situation smoothly evolves towards a regular anharmonic behavior as Te is substituted for Se and long range magnetic order is replaced by superconductivity. Irrespective to Se contents, excess Fe is shown to provide an additional damping channel for the B$_{1g}$ phonon at low temperatures. We performed Density Functional Theory (DFT) ab-initio calculations within the local density approximation (LDA) to calcuate the phonon frequencies including magnetic polarization and Fe non-stoichiometry in the Virtual Crystal Approximation (VCA). We obtained a good agreement with the measured phonon frequencies in the Fe-deficient samples, while the effects of Fe excess are poorly reproduced. This may be due to excess Fe-induced local magnetism and low energy magnetic fluctuations that can not be treated accurately within these approaches. As recently revealed by neutron scattering and $\mu$-SR studies, these phenomena occur in the temperature range where anomalous decay of the B$_{1g}$ phonon is observed, and suggests a peculiar coupling of this mode with local moments and spin fluctuations in Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_{x}$., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, 4 tables, to appear in Phys. We analyze the outcomes of an extended-Drude-model approach to the optical spectra of pnictides, where the multiband nature of the electronic excitations requires a careful analysis of the role of interband processes in the optical conductivity.Through a direct comparison between model calculations of the intraband optical spectra and experimental data, we show that interband transitions,whose relevance is shown by first-principle calculations,give a non negligible contribution already in the infrared region. This leads to a substantial failure of the extended-Drude-model analysis on the measured optical data without subtraction of interband contributions., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

BiOCuS is a band insulator that becomes metallic upon hole doping. Superconductivity was recently reported in doped BiOCu$_{1-x}$S and attributed to spin fluctuations as a pairing mechanism. Based on first principles calculations of the electron-phonon coupling, we argue that the latter is very strong in this material, and probably drives superconductivity, which is however strongly depressed by the proximity to magnetism. We find however that BiOCu$_{1-x}$S is a quite unique compound where both a conventional phonon-driven and an unconventional triplet superconductivity are possible, and compete with each other. We argue that, in this material, it should be possible to switch from conventional to unconventional superconductivity by varying such parameters as doping or pressure.

We present electronic structure calculations, electrical resistivity data and the first specific heat measurements in the normal and superconducting states of quasi-one-dimensional M2Mo6Se6 (M = Tl, In, Rb). Rb2Mo6Se6 undergoes a metal-insulator transition at ~170K: electronic structure calculations indicate that this is likely to be driven by the formation of a dynamical charge density wave. However, Tl2Mo6Se6 and In2Mo6Se6 remain metallic down to low temperature, with superconducting transitions at Tc = 4.2K and 2.85K respectively. The absence of any metal-insulator transition in these materials is due to a larger in-plane bandwidth, leading to increased inter-chain hopping which suppresses the density wave instability. Electronic heat capacity data for the superconducting compounds reveal an exceptionally low density of states DEF = 0.055 states eV^-1 atom^-1, with BCS fits showing 2Delta/kBTc >= 5 for Tl2Mo6Se6 and 3.5 for In2Mo6Se6. Modelling the lattice specific heat with a set of Einstein modes, we obtain the approximate phonon density of states F(w). Deconvolving the resistivity for the two superconductors then yields their electron-phonon transport coupling function a^2F(w). In Tl2Mo6Se6 and In2Mo6Se6, F(w) is dominated by an optical "guest ion" mode at ~5meV and a set of acoustic modes from ~10-30meV. Rb2Mo6Se6 exhibits a similar spectrum; however, the optical phonon has a lower intensity and is shifted to ~8meV. Electrons in Tl2Mo6Se6 couple strongly to both sets of modes, whereas In2Mo6Se6 only displays significant coupling in the 10-18meV range. Although pairing is clearly not mediated by the guest ion phonon, we believe it has a beneficial effect on superconductivity in Tl2Mo6Se6, given its extraordinarily large coupling strength and higher Tc compared to In2Mo6Se6., Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures

In this paper we discuss the normal and superconducting state properties of two pnictide superconductors, LaOFeAs and LaONiAs, using Migdal-Eliashberg theory and density functional perturbation theory. For pure LaOFeAs, the calculated electron-phonon coupling constant $\lambda=0.21$ and logarithmic-averaged frequency $\omega_{ln}=206 K$, give a maximum $T_c$ of 0.8 K, using the standard Migdal-Eliashberg theory. Inclusion of multiband effects increases the Tc only marginally. To reproduce the experimental $T_c$, a 5-6 times larger coupling constant would be needed. Our results indicate that standard electron-phonon coupling is not sufficient to explain superconductivity in the whole family of Fe-As based superconductors. At the same time, the electron-phonon coupling in Ni-As based compounds is much stronger and its normal and superconducting state properties can be well described by standard Migdal-Eliashberg theory., Comment: Contribution to the special issue of the Physica C on Pnicitide superconductors

The momentum and temperature dependence of the lifetimes of acoustic phonons in the elemental superconductors Pb and Nb was determined by resonant spin-echo spectroscopy with neutrons. In both elements, the superconducting energy gap extracted from these measurements was found to converge with sharp anomalies originating from Fermi-surface nesting (Kohn anomalies) at low temperatures. The results indicate electron many-body correlations beyond the standard theoretical framework for conventional superconductivity. A possible mechanism is the interplay between superconductivity and spin- or charge-density-wave fluctuations, which may induce dynamical nesting of the Fermi surface.

First principles calculations of magnetic and, to a lesser extent, electronic properties of the novel LaFeAsO-based superconductors show substantial apparent controversy, as opposed to most weakly or strongly correlated materials. Not only do different reports disagree about quantitative values, there is also a schism in terms of interpreting the basic physics of the magnetic interactions in this system. In this paper, we present a systematic analysis using four different first principles methods and show that while there is an unusual sensitivity to computational details, well-converged full-potential all-electron results are fully consistent among themselves. What makes results so sensitive and the system so different from simple local magnetic moments interacting via basic superexchange mechanisms is the itinerant character of the calculated magnetic ground state, where very soft magnetic moments and long-range interactions are characterized by a particular structure in the reciprocal (as opposed to real) space. Therefore, unravelling the magnetic interactions in their full richness remains a challenging, but utterly important task.

In this paper we calculate the electron-phonon coupling of the newly-discovered superconductor LaO$_{1-x}$F$_x$FeAs from first-principles, using Density Functional Perturbation Theory. For pure LaOFeAs, the calculated electron-phonon coupling constant $\lambda=0.21$ and logarithmic-averaged frequency $\omega_{ln}=206 K$, give a maximum $T_c$ of 0.8 K, using the standard Migdal-Eliashberg theory. For the $F-$doped compounds, we predict even smaller coupling constants, due to the strong suppression of the electronic Density of States at the Fermi level. To reproduce the experimental $T_c=26 K$, a 5-6 times larger coupling constant would be needed. Our results indicate that electron-phonon coupling is not sufficient to explain superconductivity in the newly-discovered LaO$_{1-x}$F$_x$FeAs superconductor, probably due to the importance of strong correlation effects.

We present a combined experimental and theoretical study of the effects of pressure on T_c of the hexagonal layered superconductors nH-CaAlSi (n = 1, 5, 6), where nH labels the different stacking variants that were recently discovered. Experimentally, the pressure dependence of T_c has been investigated by measuring the magnetic susceptibility of single crystals up to 10 kbar. In contrast to previous results on polycrystalline samples, single crystals with different stacking sequences display different pressure dependences of T_c. 1H-CaAlSi shows a decrease of T_c with pressure, whereas 5H and 6H-CaAlSi exhibit an increase of T_c with pressure. Ab-initio calculations for 1H, 5H and 6H -CaAlSi reveal that an ultrasoft phonon branch associated to out-of-plane vibrations of the Al-Si layers softens with pressure, leading to a structural instability at high pressures. For 1H-CaAlSi the softening is not sufficient to cause an increase of T_c, which is consistent with the present experiments, but adverse to previous reports. For 5H and 6H the softening provides the mechanism to understand the observed increase of T_c with pressure. We report the discovery of superconductivity below 1.65(6) K in Sr-intercalated graphite SrC6, by susceptibility and specific heat (Cp) measurements. In comparison with CaC6, we found that the anisotropy of the upper critical fields for SrC6 is much reduced. The Cp anomaly at Tc is smaller than the BCS prediction indicating an anisotropic superconducting gap for SrC6 similar to CaC6. The significantly lower Tc of SrC6 as compared to CaC6 can be understood in terms of "negative" pressure effects, which decreases the electron-phonon coupling for both in-plane intercalant and the out-of-plane C phonon modes. We present the first realization of the generalized pseudoatom concept introduced by Ball, and adopt the name enatom to minimize confusion. This enatom, which consists of a unique decomposition of the total charge density (or potential) of any solid into a sum of overlapping atomiclike contributions that move rigidly with the nuclei to first order, is calculated using (numerical) linear response methods, and is analyzed for both fcc Li and Al at pressures of 0, 35, and 50 GPa. These two simple fcc metals (Li is fcc and a good superconductor in the 20-40 GPa range) show different physical behaviors under pressure, which reflects the increasing covalency in Li and the lack of it in Al. The nonrigid (deformation) parts of the enatom charge and potential have opposite signs in Li and Al; they become larger under pressure only in Li. These results establish a method of construction of the enatom, whose potential can be used to obtain a real-space understanding of the vibrational properties and electron-phonon interaction in solids., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, 1 table, V2: fixed problem with Fig. 7, V3: minor corrections

Neutron resonance spin-echo spectroscopy was used to monitor the temperature evolution of the linewidths of transverse acoustic phonons in lead across the superconducting transition temperature, $T_c$, over an extended range of the Brillouin zone. For phonons with energies below the superconducting energy gap, a linewidth reduction of maximum amplitude $\sim 6 \mu$eV was observed below $T_c$. The electron-phonon contribution to the phonon lifetime extracted from these data is in satisfactory overall agreement with {\it ab-initio} lattice-dynamical calculations, but significant deviations are found.

We discuss the current status of the theory of the "high-temperature" superconductivity in intercalated graphites YbC6 and CaC6. We emphasize that while the general picture of conventional, phonon-driven superconductivity has already emerged and is generally accepted, there are still interesting problems with this picture, such as weak-coupling regime inferred from specific heat suggesting coupling exclusively with high-energy carbon phonons coming in direct contradiction with the isotope effect measurements suggesting coupling exclusively with the low-energy intercalant modes. At the same time, the first principle calculations, while explaining Tc, contradict both of the experiments above by predicting equal coupling with both groups of phonons., Comment: Contribution to the Proceedings of the M2S Conference in Dresden, 2006

The superconducting state of Ca-intercalated graphite CaC6 has been investigated by specific heat measurements. The characteristic anomaly at the superconducting transition (Tc = 11.4 K) indicates clearly the bulk nature of the superconductivity. The temperature and magnetic field dependence of the electronic specific heat are consistent with a fully-gapped superconducting order parameter. The estimated electron-phonon coupling constant is lambda = 0.60 - 0.74 suggesting that the relatively high Tc of CaC6 can be explained within the weak-coupling BCS approach., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figs, submitted to Phys. The pressure effect on the superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) of the newly-discovered Ca-intercalated graphite compound CaC$_6$ has been investigated up to $\sim$ 16 kbar. $T_c$ is found to increase under pressure with a large relative ratio $\Delta$$T_c$/$T_c$ of $\approx$ +0.4 %/kbar. Using first-principles calculations, we show that the large and positive effect of pressure on $T_c$ can be explained in the scope of electron-phonon theory due to the presence of a soft phonon branch associated to in-plane vibrations of Ca atoms. Small Fermi energy effects are induced in MgB$_2$ by the low hole doping in the $\sigma$ bands which are characterized by a Fermi energy $E_{\rm F}^\sigma \sim 0.5$ eV. We show that, due to the particularly strong deformation potential relative to the $E_{2g}$ phonon mode, lattice fluctuations are reflected in strong fluctuations in the electronic band structure. Quantum fluctuations associated to the zero-point lattice motion are responsible for an uncertainty of the Fermi energy of the order of the Fermi energy itself, leading to the breakdown of the adiabatic principle underlying the Born-Oppenheimer approximation in MgB$_2$ even if $\omega_{\rm ph}/E_{\rm F} \sim 0.1-0.2$, where $\omega_{\rm ph}$ are the characteristic phonon frequencies. This amounts to a new nonadiabatic regime, which could be relevant to other unconventional superconductors., Comment: to appear on Physical Review B

In this paper we investigate the role of the electronic correlation on the hole doping dependence of electron-phonon and superconducting properties of cuprates. We introduce a simple analytical expression for the one-particle Green's function in the presence of electronic correlation and we evaluate the reduction of the screening properties as the electronic correlation increases by approaching half-filling. The poor screening properties play an important role within the context of the nonadiabatic theory of superconductivity. We show that a consistent inclusion of the reduced screening properties in the nonadiabatic theory can account in a natural way for the $T_c$-$\delta$ phase diagram of cuprates. High-$T_c$ superconductors are usually described as strongly correlated electronic systems. This feature deeply affects the one-particle and two-particle properties of the system. In particular, a large incoherent background developes on the top of a narrow quasi-particle peak in the one-electron spectral function. We schematize this structure with a simple phenomenological form. The corresponding Green's function is employed to calculate the charge response of the system taking into account in a proper way strong correlation effects. The effective charge interaction acquires a structure in the exchanged momentum space with a predominance of forward scattering, in agreement with previous numerical calculations.
