Abstract

A key challenge in particle accelerators is to achieve high peak intensity. Space charge is particularly strong at lower energy such as during injection and typically limits achievable peak intensity. The beam stacking technique can overcome this limitation by accumulating a beam at high energy where space charge is weaker. In beam stacking, a bunch of particles is injected and accelerated to high energy. This bunch continues to circulate, while a second and subsequent bunches are accelerated to merge into the first. It also allows the user cycle and acceleration cycles to be separated which is often valuable. Beam stacking is not possible in a time varying magnetic field, but a fixed field machine such as an Fixed Field Alternating Gradient Accelerator (FFA) does not sweep the magnetic field. In this paper, we describe experimental demonstration of beam stacking of two beams at KURNS FFA in Kyoto University. The momentum spread and intensity of the beam was analysed by study of the Schottky signal, demonstrating stacking with only a slight increase of momentum spread of the combined beams. The intensity of the first beam was, however, significantly reduced. RF knock-out is the suspected source of the beam loss., Comment: 14 pages, 16 figures

Abstract

This report describes the physics case, the resulting detector requirements, and the evolving detector concepts for the experimental program at the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC). The EIC will be a powerful new high-luminosity facility in the United States with the capability to collide high-energy electron beams with high-energy proton and ion beams, providing access to those regions in the nucleon and nuclei where their structure is dominated by gluons. Moreover, polarized beams in the EIC will give unprecedented access to the spatial and spin structure of the proton, neutron, and light ions. The studies leading to this document were commissioned and organized by the EIC User Group with the objective of advancing the state and detail of the physics program and developing detector concepts that meet the emerging requirements in preparation for the realization of the EIC. The effort aims to provide the basis for further development of concepts for experimental equipment best suited for the science needs, including the importance of two complementary detectors and interaction regions. This report consists of three volumes. Volume I is an executive summary of our findings and developed concepts. In Volume II we describe studies of a wide range of physics measurements and the emerging requirements on detector acceptance and performance. Volume III discusses general-purpose detector concepts and the underlying technologies to meet the physics requirements. These considerations will form the basis for a world-class experimental program that aims to increase our understanding of the fundamental structure of all visible matter.

Abstract

This research paper presents a data-driven framework for design optimization of renewable energy communities (RECs) in the residential sector, considering both techno-economic challenges and environmental impact. The study's focus is to determine suitable sizes for photovoltaic systems, wind turbines, and battery electrical energy systems by evaluating energy, economic, and environmental criteria. To achieve this, we develop a data-driven model that incorporates Homer Pro and an in-house tool developed in Python programming language that integrates a machine learning algorithm, life cycle cost (LCC), life cycle assessment (LCA) calculations of the REC model. Furthermore, a multi-objective optimization model is established to minimize the LCC and LCA parameters while maximizing green energy use. Moreover, a multi-criteria decision-making approach based on Weighted Sum Model (WSM) is proposed to help the stakeholders to see beyond the selection criteria based on LCC and LCA to choose the most appropriate scenario optimal solution for the desired energy community and interpret the effect of various economic parameters on the sustainable performance of REC. The framework application is illustrated through a case study for the optimal design of REC for a residential community in Tarragona, Spain, consisting of 100 buildings. The results revealed a substantial improvement in economic , environmental benefits for designing REC, the optimal minimum cost solution with a levelized cost of energy (LCOE = 0.044 $/kWh) and a payback period of 7.1 years with an LCOE reduction of 85.04% compared to the base case. Abstract

We provide a concise overview on transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions, their application to topical issues in high-energy physics phenomenology, and their theoretical connections with QCD resummation, evolution and factorization theorems. We illustrate the use of TMDs via examples of multi-scale problems in hadronic collisions. These include transverse momentum q_T spectra of Higgs and vector bosons for low q_T, and azimuthal correlations in the production of multiple jets associated with heavy bosons at large jet masses. Abstract

Transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution functions (PDFs), TMDs for short, are defined as the Fourier transform of matrix elements of nonlocal combinations of quark and gluon fields. The nonlocality is bridged by gauge links, which for TMDs have characteristic paths (future or past pointing), giving rise to a process dependence that breaks universality. It is possible, however, to construct sets of universal TMDs of which in a given process particular combinations are needed with calculable, process-dependent, coefficients. This occurs for both T-odd and T-even TMDs, including also the {\it unpolarized} quark and gluon TMDs. This extends the by now well-known example of T-odd TMDs that appear with opposite sign in single-spin azimuthal asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering or in the Drell-Yan process. In this paper we analyze the cases where TMDs enter multiplied by products of two transverse momenta, which includes besides the $p_T$-broadening observable, also instances with rank two structures. To experimentally demonstrate the process dependence of the latter cases requires measurements of second harmonic azimuthal asymmetries, while the $p_T$-broadening will require measurements of processes beyond semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering or the Drell-Yan process. Abstract

This White Paper presents the science case of an Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), focused on the structure and interactions of gluon-dominated matter, with the intent to articulate it to the broader nuclear science community. It was commissioned by the managements of Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) and Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) with the objective of presenting a summary of scientific opportunities and goals of the EIC as a follow-up to the 2007 NSAC Long Range plan. This document is a culmination of a community-wide effort in nuclear science following a series of workshops on EIC physics over the past decades and, in particular, the focused ten-week program on “Gluons and quark sea at high energies” at the Institute for Nuclear Theory in Fall 2010. It contains a brief description of a few golden physics measurements along with accelerator and detector concepts required to achieve them. It has been benefited profoundly from inputs by the users’ communities of BNL and JLab. This White Paper offers the promise to propel the QCD science program in the US, established with the CEBAF accelerator at JLab and the RHIC collider at BNL, to the next QCD frontier.

Abstract

This report is based on a ten-week program on "Gluons and the quark sea at high-energies", which took place at the Institute for Nuclear Theory in Seattle in Fall 2010. The principal aim of the program was to develop and sharpen the science case for an Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a facility that will be able to collide electrons and positrons with polarized protons and with light to heavy nuclei at high energies, offering unprecedented possibilities for in-depth studies of quantum chromodynamics. This report is organized around four major themes: i) the spin and flavor structure of the proton, ii) three-dimensional structure of nucleons and nuclei in momentum and configuration space, iii) QCD matter in nuclei, and iv) Electroweak physics and the search for physics beyond the Standard Model. Abstract

We present a summary of a recent workshop held at Duke University on Partonic Transverse Momentum in Hadrons: Quark Spin-Orbit Correlations and Quark-Gluon Interactions. The transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMDs), parton-to-hadron fragmentation functions, and multi-parton correlation functions, were discussed extensively at the Duke workshop. In this paper, we summarize first the theoretical issues concerning the study of partonic structure of hadrons at a future electron-ion collider (EIC) with emphasis on the TMDs. We then present simulation results on experimental studies of TMDs through measurements of single spin asymmetries (SSA) from semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (SIDIS) processes with an EIC, and discuss the requirement of the detector for SIDIS measurements. The dynamics of parton correlations in the nucleon is further explored via a study of SSA in D (`D) production at large transverse momenta with the aim of accessing the unexplored tri-gluon correlation functions. The workshop participants identified the SSA measurements in SIDIS as a golden program to study TMDs in both the sea and valence quark regions and to study the role of gluons, with the Sivers asymmetry measurements as examples. Abstract

The angular distribution in photon-jet production in p\bar{p} -> \gamma jet X is studied within a generalized factorization scheme taking into account the transverse momentum of the partons in the initial hadrons. Within this scheme an anomalously large cos(2\phi) asymmetry observed in the Drell-Yan process could be attributed to the T-odd, spin and transverse momentum dependent parton distribution function h_1^{\perp q}(x, p_{\perp}^2). The same function is expected to produce a cos(2\phi) asymmetry in the photon-jet production cross section. We consider polarized Lambda hyperon production in proton-proton scattering, p p -> (\Lambda^\uparrow jet) jet X, in the kinematical region of the LHC experiments, in particular the ALICE experiment. We present a new Lambda polarization observable that arises from the Sivers effect in the fragmentation process. It can be large even at midrapidity and therefore, is of interest for high energy hadron collider experiments. Abstract

We discuss the angular distribution of the lepton pair in the Drell-Yan process, hadron+hadron -> \gamma^* X -> l^+ l^- X. This process gives information on the spin-density matrix \rho^{(q,\bar{q})} of the annihilating quark-antiquark pair in q+\bar{q} -> l^+ l^-. There is strong experimental evidence that even for unpolarised initial hadrons \rho^{(q,\bar{q})} is nontrivial, and therefore the quark-antiquark system is polarised. We discuss the possibilities of a general \rho^{(q,\bar{q})} -which could be entangled- and a factorising \rho^{(q,\bar{q})}. Following a previous description of Lambda and Lambda-bar polarization in unpolarized p-p interactions, within a perturbative QCD factorization scheme with new polarizing fragmentation functions, here we investigate the transverse polarization of Lambda's and Lambda-bar's produced in semi-inclusive DIS. Analytical expressions for both neutral and charged current exchange are given. Since quantitative predictions cannot be given at this stage and comparison with existing data are not yet significant, we present the general formalism and a qualitative analysis displaying generic features of the Lambda and Lambda-bar polarization for specific scenarios. Abstract

We study the fragmentation of a transversely polarized quark into a non collinear (k_T not= 0) spinless hadron and the fragmentation of an unpolarized quark into a non collinear transversely polarized spin 1/2 baryon. These nonperturbative properties are described by spin and k_T dependent fragmentation functions and are revealed in the observation of single spin asymmetries. We investigate the properties of interference fragmentation functions arising from the emission of two leading hadrons inside the same jet for inclusive lepton-nucleon deep-inelastic scattering. Using an extended spectator model for the mechanism of the hadronization, we give a complete calculation and numerical estimates for the examples of a proton-pion pair produced with invariant mass on the Roper resonance, and of two pions produced with invariant mass close to the $\rho$ mass. Abstract

This report is based on a ten-week program on "Gluons and the quark sea athigh-energies", which took place at the Institute for Nuclear Theory in Seattlein Fall 2010. The principal aim of the program was to develop and sharpen thescience case for an Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a facility that will be ableto collide electrons and positrons with polarized protons and with light toheavy nuclei at high energies, offering unprecedented possibilities forin-depth studies of quantum chromodynamics. This report is organized aroundfour major themes: i) the spin and flavor structure of the proton, ii)three-dimensional structure of nucleons and nuclei in momentum andconfiguration space, iii) QCD matter in nuclei, and iv) Electroweak physics andthe search for physics beyond the Standard Model. Beginning with an executivesummary, the report contains tables of key measurements, chapter overviews foreach of the major scientific themes, and detailed individual contributions onvarious aspects of the scientific opportunities presented by an EIC.
