The Joint Strike Fighter competition has been reduced to Lockheed Martin and Boeing, after McDonnell Douglas was eliminated. Lockheed Martin has a more conservative, low risk design and Boeing has a more innovative design. McDonnell Douglas' innovative design was complex and could result in problems.

A new generation of unmanned combat aircraft that could be utilized along with F-22s and other manned aircraft is being planned by Boeing. The aircraft manufacturer plans to employ its Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) design as the blueprint for the new fighter planes that are expected to cost $15 million each. Boeing intends to use key parts from the JSF program to build the new aircraft. The move will enable Boeing to reduce the original price of the aircraft from $30 million to $15 million.

Boeing Co will start in Oct 1998 building the Next Generation 737 jet transports at the Long Beach, CA, facility formerly Douglas Products Div. The company plans to assemble three planes a month, which will help solve production problems.

Aircraft industry analysts says that they expect Boeing Co to announce the launch of its 777-200X aircraft after receiving firm orders from two airlines that plan to acquire between 15 and 20 units. One airline has been identified as Malaysia Airlines.
