2. Aggies Invent: How an Intensive Design Experience Teaches an Entrepreneurial Mindset

Abstract

Entrepreneurial skills are being sought by companies as they consider college graduates, particularly engineers, for future employment. Technical skills have become the baseline while the ability to apply these skills in a business environment has become a key differentiator in the value of employees in corporate environments. To address this need some universities have incorporated entrepreneurial skill development in curricular and extra-curricular offerings. This paper chronicles how Texas A&M University has developed an extra-curricular program which focuses on experiential learning to develop an entrepreneurial mindset in students whilst following the engineering design process. Appropriately named: "Aggies Invent."

3. A Temporal Model of Team Mentoring: A Grounded Theory Approach

Abstract

This grounded theory research examined the actions mentors take to help student teams. We interviewed nine mentors from an engineering competition using semi-structured interviews. We studied the interactions between mentors and student teams and identified nine mentoring actions: initiating the relationship, strategies to develop thinking, active involvement in the design process, keeping the team on track, empathising with the team, monitoring team dynamics, offering appropriate amount of support, providing information, and giving career advice. These nine actions can be mapped into a temporal model of team mentoring with two dimensions -- the teamwork process dimension comprises mentoring actions that target team relationship building, and the teamwork foundation dimension consists of mentoring actions that focus on the product or design, the outcome of the team interactions. This "Temporal Model of Team Mentoring" (TMTM) advances the theoretical conceptions of team mentoring and can be used as a guide for team mentor training.

7. How do students transform good solutions from an educational challenge in a startup? A case study to entrepreneurship education

Abstract

In many universities around the world several events of short term Pbl are taking place. These are challenges proposed to the engineering students from concrete problems given by NGOs, governmental institutions, or enterprises. In general, they are named hackathons or bootcamps. The goal is to spark interest and develop skills linked to the design and the engineering project development in short-time sprints. However, most of these solutions are never implemented in practice by the teams that created them. The universities consider these practices as part of the education in engineering. Two Brazilian institutions (CEFET/RJ-Federal Center for Engineering Education-Rio de Janeiro and UFRJ-Federal University of Rio de Janeiro - Brazil) participated and won the international event named "Invent for the Planet" organized by Texas A&M University in 2019. The students developed an interface for blind people to walk on the streets avoiding obstacles. Back in Brazil, these students patented the product and created a startup to produce and introduce that solution in the market. Today they have an accessibility startup with several other solutions in addition to the one created at the event. This research has the goal to understand the ways that made these students transform an educational project into a feasible/successful entrepreneurial action. What was the motivation of these students? Where did they get additional entrepreneurship training? What lessons does this case can provide to engineering education? A set of interviews has been carried out to understand the process that can contribute to engineering entrepreneurship education in the universities.

9. The Implementation and Assessment of an I-Corps Site at a Southwestern University: Lessons Learned.

Abstract

In this paper, we presented program implementation and evaluation for an I-Corps Site focused solely on engineering undergraduate and graduate students in a large Southwestern public university. The program implementation component included program data associated with curriculum content and format, recruiting approach, and participant data from five cohorts. Due to the delayed employment of the assessment, the evaluation component included findings from two cohorts using pre- and post-quizzes on knowledge of entrepreneurship terms and pre- and post-surveys that captured changes in perceptions of entrepreneurship and customer interview. The results of this study indicated that while student interest on entrepreneurship remained constant, there were significant improvements of participants in three areas of self-efficacy: (a) entrepreneurship, (b) marketing and business planning, and (c) customer interview skills. Regarding practice of customer discovery skills through interviews, students identified four areas in which they desired additional improvement: (a) formulating the right question, (b) contact identification within the market, (c) guiding discussion for useful customer feedback, and (d) interview presence. This paper provides valuable information for institutions interested in pursuing an I-Corps Site grant and to those who already have a grant but are looking for additional ways to further enhance program impact on their campus.
