High-pressure neutron diffraction is an extremely useful technique in the quest for making and understanding novel hydride superconductors. Neutron diffraction can be used to directly determine elemental stoichiometries and atomic positions of many light elements such as hydrogen or deuterium, even in the presence of heavy elements such as rare-earth metals. Here, we report on the current status and ongoing developments on high-pressure neutron diffraction for hydride superconductors and other metal hydrides with a special focus on current advancements at the Spallation Neutrons and Pressure (SNAP) beamline of the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. For broader context, an overview of high-pressure neutron diffractometers and pressure cells is included together with insight into critical sample considerations. There, attention is given to the requirements for powdered hydride samples and the need for deuterium rather than hydrogen. Additionally, the advantages of angular access and data representation as possible at SNAP are described. We demonstrate the current capability for high-pressure neutron diffraction on two different samples created via hydrogen gas loading, specifically pure deuterium and nickel-deuteride. The deuterium example highlights the usefulness of adding sample materials that facilitate the formation of a good powder while the nickel-deuteride example demonstrates that atomic deuterium positions and stoichiometry can be directly determined. Both examples highlight the importance of large scattering apertures. These enable investigation of the data resolved by scattering angle that is needed to identify parasitic peaks and background features. Exploring the behavior of hydrocarbon under pressure is important for understanding its role in planetary sciences and also for exploring novel organic chemistry. In this study, we explored the high-pressure behavior of a linear-chain hydrocarbon, tricosane (C23H48), using Raman spectroscopy. We compressed tricosane up to 23 GPa and did not find any evidence for pressure-induced amorphization within the conditions explored in this study. Upon compression, we observe new modes in the low energy region 100–300 cm−1. In order to understand the appearance of these new modes at high pressures, we used complementary ab initio calculations and explored the effect of chain configurations (linear and bent) on the predicted Raman spectra. We find that these new modes observed at higher pressures are better explained by bent configuration of tricosane chains. Thus, based on high-pressure Raman spectra, it is very likely that a linear chain of tricosane is bent under pressure, i.e., it undergoes a pressure-induced trans-gauche transformation. It is also likely that such bent regions (i.e., kinks) will act as sites along which large chain hydrocarbons could dissociate into smaller chain lengths at extreme conditions relevant to the interiors of Jovian planets. The crystal structure of diaspore, AlO(OH), has been investigated by in situ single-crystal synchrotron X-ray diffraction at ~50 GPa using the diamond-anvil cell technique. Diaspore is found to retain its structure up to 51.5 GPa at room temperature, which is more than 30 GPa above the transition pressure to [delta]-AlO(OH) found in quenched high-temperature experiments and derived from density functional theory calculations. The compression is anisotropic and largest for the a axis. This can be explained by the fact that the structural response to pressure is mainly due to the shortening of the hydrogen bond, which is oriented nearly parallel to the a axis. The sound velocity in polycrystalline ice was measured as a function of pressure at room temperature to 100 GPa, through the phase field of ice VII and crossing the ice X transition, by Brillouin scattering in order to examine the elasticity, compression mechanism, and structural transitions in this pressure range. In particular, we focused on previously proposed phase transitions below 60 GPa. Throughout this pressure range, we find no evidence for anomalous changes in compressibility, and the sound velocities and elastic moduli do not exhibit measurable discontinuous shifts with pressure. Subtle changes in the pressure dependence of the bulk modulus at intermediate pressures can be attributed to high shear stresses at these compressions. The C11 and C12 moduli are consistent with previously reported results to 40 GPa and increase monotonically at higher pressures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Alloy and nitride solid solutions are prominent for structural, energy and information processing applications. There are frequently however barriers to making them. We remove barriers to reactivity here using pressure with a new synthetic approach. We target pressures where the reasons for cubic endmember nitride instability can become the driving force for cubic nitride solid solution stability. Using this approach we form a novel rocksalt Mg0.4Fe0.6N solid solution at between 15 and 23 GPa and up to 2500 K. This is a system where, neither an alloy nor a nitride solid solution form at ambient conditions and bulk MgN and FeN endmembers do not form, either at ambient or at high pressure. The new nitride is formed, by removing endmember lattice mismatch with pressure, allowing a stabilizing redistribution of valence electrons upon heating. This approach can be employed for a range of normally unreactive systems. Mg, Fe and enhanced nitrogen presence, may also indicate a richer reaction chemistry in our planets interior.
