Background: Postural imbalance and falls are an early disabling symptom in patients with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) of multifactorial origin that may involve abnormal vestibulospinal reflexes. Low-intensity noisy galvanic vestibular stimulation (nGVS) is a non-invasive treatment to normalize deficient vestibular function and attenuate imbalance in Parkinson's disease. The presumed therapeutic mode of nGVS is stochastic resonance (SR), a mechanism by which weak sensory noise stimulation can enhance sensory information processing. Objective: To examine potential treatment effects of nGVS on postural instability in 16 patients with PSP with a clinically probable and [18F]PI-2620 tau-PET-positive PSP. Methods: Effects of nGVS of varying intensity (0–0.7 mA) on body sway were examined, while patients were standing with eyes closed on a posturographic force plate. We assumed a bell-shaped response curve with maximal sway reductions at intermediate nGVS intensities to be indicative of SR. An established SR-curve model was fitted on individual patient outcomes and three experienced human raters had to judge whether responses to nGVS were consistent with the exhibition of SR. Results: We found nGVS-induced reductions of body sway compatible with SR in 9 patients (56%) with optimal improvements of 31 ± 10%. In eight patients (50%), nGVS-induced sway reductions exceeded the minimal clinically important difference (improvement: 34 ± 5%), indicative of strong SR. Conclusion: nGVS yielded clinically relevant reductions in body sway compatible with the exhibition of SR in vestibular sensorimotor pathways in at least half of the assessed patients. Freezing is one of the most extensively studied defensive behaviors in rodents. Both reduced body and gaze movements during anticipation of threat also occur in humans and have been discussed as translational indicators of freezing but their relationship remains unclear. We thus set out to elucidate body and eye movements and concomitant autonomic dynamics in anticipation of avoidable threat. Specifically, 50 participants viewed naturalistic pictures that were preceded by a colored fixation cross, signaling them whether to expect an inevitable (shock), no (safety), or a potential shock (flight) that could be avoided by a quick button press. Body sway, eye movements, the heart rate and skin conductance were recorded. We replicated previously described reductions in body sway, gaze dispersion, and the heart rate, and a skin conductance increase in flight trials. Stronger reductions in gaze but not in body sway predicted faster motor reactions on a trial‐wise basis, highlighting their functional role in action preparation. We failed to find a trait‐like relationship between body and gaze movements across participants, but their temporal profiles were positively related within individuals, suggesting that both metrics partly reflect the same construct. However, future research is desirable to assess these response patterns in naturalistic environments. A more ethological examination of different movement dynamics upon threat would not only warrant better comparability between rodent and human research but also help determine whether and how eye‐tracking could be implemented as a proxy for fear‐related movements in restricted brain imaging environments. Our article unravels the relationship between body and eye movements in human threat anticipation, drawing parallels with freezing behavior in rodents. Perceived cuteness motivates people to approach cute objects, but no evidence exists of unconscious approach behavior toward objects. Given the unconscious responses associated with cuteness perception, an unconscious drive to physically approach cute objects is likely to occur. However, approach behavior may or may not occur depending on whether or not the perceived cute object is an adult, a baby, or a non-human. In this study, we recruited 24 participants and conducted a correlation study between cuteness ratings and body sway to examine whether or not the approach response is dependent on perceived cuteness. Results showed that the approach or avoidance response to cute objects was observed only in women. For babies, the approach response occurred regardless of the degree of cuteness, but for adult female faces, the cuter the face, the more the avoidance response occurred. For non-human images, the cuter the image, the more the approach response occurred only in early period of observation time. BACKGROUND: Patients with vestibular impairment often suffer from postural instability. This could be compensated by other sensory systems such as the auditory system. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate whether auditory input improves postural stability in patients with abnormal subjective haptic vertical (SHV). METHODS: Participants (n = 13) with normal hearing and vision, but abnormal SHV participated. Participants performed standing on firm ground and foam support (eyes open/closed) and Tandem Romberg test (eyes closed) in quiet (reference), noise and with plugged ears. All tasks were conducted in a soundproofed and reverberant room. Postural stability was recorded close to the body's center of gravity. Reference conditions were compared with a control group. RESULTS: In only two tasks sway increased significantly when noise was presented during challenging tasks in the soundproofed room. Sway of the reference conditions did not differ significantly between control and study group. CONCLUSIONS: This study shows no influence of applied auditory stimulation on posture in participants with abnormal SHV in a reverberant room, but an adverse effect on balance during difficult tasks in the soundproofed room. Noise possibly masked auditory information that was helpful in improving posture in the quiet condition. Futhermore, noise might have distracted participants from maintaining balance. Background: Previous studies indicate that imbalance in patients with bilateral vestibulopathy (BVP) may be reduced by treatment with low-intensity noisy galvanic vestibular stimulation (nGVS). Objective: To elucidate the potential mechanisms underlying this therapeutic effect. In particular, we determined whether nGVS-induced balance improvements in patients are compatible with stochastic resonance (SR)—a mechanism by which weak noise stimulation can paradoxically enhance sensory signal processing. Methods: Effects of nGVS of varying intensities (0–0.7 mA) on body sway were examined in 19 patients with BVP standing with eye closed on a posturographic force plate. We assumed a bell-shaped response curve with maximal sway reductions at intermediate nGVS intensities to be indicative of SR. An established SR curve model was fitted on individual patient outcomes, and three experienced human raters had to judge whether responses to nGVS were consistent with the exhibition of SR. Results: nGVS-induced reductions of body sway compatible with SR were found in 12 patients (63%) with optimal improvements of 31 ± 21%. In 10 patients (53%), nGVS-induced sway reductions exceeded the minimally important clinical difference (optimal improvement: 35 ± 21%), indicative of strong SR. This beneficial effect was more likely in patients with severe vestibular loss (i.e. lower video head impulse test gain; R = 0.663; p = 0.002) and considerable postural imbalance (baseline body sway; R = 0.616; p = 0.005). Conclusions: More than half of the assessed patients showed robust improvements in postural balance compatible with SR when treated with nGVS. Background: The Balance Error Scoring System (BESS) is a commonly used method for clinically evaluating balance after traumatic brain injury. The utilization of force plates, characterized by their cost-effectiveness and portability, facilitates the integration of instrumentation into the BESS protocol. Despite the enhanced precision associated with instrumented measures, there remains a need to determine the clinical significance and feasibility of such measures within pediatric cohorts. Objective: To report a comprehensive set of posturographic measures obtained during instrumented BESS and to examine the concurrent validity, reliability, and feasibility of instrumented BESS in the pediatric point of care setting. Methods: Thirty-seven participants (18 female; aged 13.32 ± 3.31 years) performed BESS while standing on a force plate to simultaneously compute stabilometric measures (instrumented BESS). Ellipse area (EA), path length (PL), and sway velocity (VM) were obtained for each of the six BESS positions and compared with the respective BESS scores. Additionally, the effects of sex and age were explored. A second BESS repetition was performed to evaluate the test–retest reliability. Feedback questionnaires were handed out after testing to evaluate the feasibility of the proposed protocol. Results: The BESS total score was 20.81 ± 6.28. While there was no statistically significant age or sex dependency in the BESS results, instrumented posturography demonstrated an age dependency in EA, VM, and PL. The one-leg stance on a soft surface resulted in the highest BESS score (8.38 ± 1.76), EA (218.78 cm2 ± 168.65), PL (4386.91 mm ± 1859.00), and VM (21.93 mm/s ± 9.29). The Spearman's coefficient displayed moderate to high correlations between the EA (rs = 0.429–0.770, p = 0.001–0.009), PL (rs = 0.451–0.809, p = 0.001–0.006), and VM (rs = 0.451–0.809, p = 0.001–0.006) when compared with the BESS scores for all testing positions, except for the one-leg stance on a soft surface. The BESS total score significantly correlated during the first and second repetition (rs = 0.734, p ≤ 0.001), as did errors during the different testing positions (rs = 0.489–0.799, p ≤ 0.001–0.002), except during the two-legged stance on a soft surface. VM and PL correlated significantly in all testing positions (rs = 0.465–0.675, p ≤ 0.001–0.004; (rs = 0.465–0.675, p ≤ 0.001–0.004), as did EA for all positions except for the two-legged stance on a soft surface (rs = 0.392–0.581, p ≤ 0.001–0.016). A total of 92% of participants stated that the instructions for the testing procedure were very well-explained, while 78% of participants enjoyed the balance testing, and 61% of participants could not decide whether the testing was easy or hard to perform. Conclusions: Instrumented posturography may complement clinical assessment in investigating postural control in children and adolescents. While the BESS score only allows for the consideration of a total score approximating postural control, instrumented posturography offers several parameters representing the responsiveness and magnitude of body sway as well as a more differentiated analysis of movement trajectory. Concise instrumented posturography protocols should be developed to augment neuropediatric assessments in cases where a deficiency in postural control is suspected, potentially stemming from disruptions in the processing of visual, proprioceptive, and/or vestibular information. The human postural control function is determined by inputs from three senses, namely, vision, balance, and somatosensation. Many studies have attempted to induce body movements in arbitrary directions using external stimuli to maintain and improve postural control functions. Previous studies demonstrated that sensory information from the plantar region of the foot is involved in the understanding of front–back position and regulation of body movements. In the present study, we investigated a method to induce postural control and walking movements in an arbitrary direction by presenting matrix-shaped tactile stimuli (MSTS) to the plantar region of the foot. We developed a tactile stimulation device to investigate body sway when the MSTS was presented to the dorsal surface region of a foot in a standing posture. This device is envisioned to be used as a wearable guidance tool in the future. In addition, the measurement experiment used a high-speed camera and an accelerometer placed on the top of the subject's head to track the subject's movements in response to the MSTS presented by the device. In this paper, the relationship between the control parameters (L, T) of tactile stimulation MSTS and body sway and its direction was considered. The results showed that the introduction of MSTS on the sole of the foot could induce body sway. Introduction: Unilateral preference is dominant due to the intensive use of sport-specific movements in football. However, little is known about the possible correlation between unilateral functional movement and the center of pressure-based postural performance. The main aim of this study is to examine the correlation between functional movement screen (FMS) and postural stability in football players from an asymmetrical perspective. Materials and Methods: Fifty professional football players (male n = 25; age 21.40 ± 1.94 years; female n = 25; age 21.04 ± 1.24 years) volunteered for this study. All subjects completed a FMS test consisting of seven items and postural sway measures for dominant and non-dominant sides. Spearman's correlation and the Mann-Whitney U-test were used for statistical processing. Results: A negative correlation was found between dominant and non-dominant sides FMS in scores and postural sway parameters in both male and female groups (p < .05). Hurdle step (HS) and rotary stability (RS) proved to be strong predictors of postural stability for both groups (p < .001). No significant differences were observed between dominant and nondominant sides in FMS items and postural sway parameters in both groups (p > .05). Conclusions: The correlation of the FMS and postural sway measures may be useful to identify possible postural problems in football players. Introduction: Ankle stiffness is a factor that contributes to maintaining balance and counteracts the forces of gravity as the body sways. Stability while standing quietly depends on its value. Intrinsic ankle stiffness refers to (i) the passive resistance provided by the structural components of the ankle joint itself, such as the ligaments and joint capsules, (ii) a property of the joint that remains constant regardless of the external forces applied, (iii) a characteristic that affects the stability and control of the ankle joint. The aim is to present compilation of the results published in the researchers' work makes it possible to analyze changes in the value of ankle stiffness for perturbations of different amplitude. Material and Methods: The review is based on articles identified through searches of Pubmed, Web of Science, and Scopus. There were no restrictions on the publication date. The Boolean search strategy was used. Results: Ankle stiffness changes with increasing sway amplitude. Its values are greater for perturbations of smaller amplitudes and, therefore, cannot be represented by a single value. Passive stiffness reduces sway and allows time for the active system to respond. The interaction of these two mechanisms ensures the stability of an upright posture. Conclusions: Ankle stiffness is a parameter that can be applied in clinical practice. Introduction: Standing upright at height is a challenging situation involving intense threat of balance loss and fall. The ability to maintain balance in such conditions requires properly resolving sensory conflicts and is influenced by fear. To get more insight on the role of fear in balance control at height, we explored the dynamics of postural behavior in the situation of enhanced threat of potential balance loss. Methods: In 40 young individuals with varying fear of heights, we combined simulated exposure to height in a virtual reality environment with bilateral vibration of tibialis anterior muscles which evokes posture destabilization (the so-called vibration-induced falling). Results: Under such condition of enhanced postural threat, individuals with intense fear of heights showed stronger stiffening of posture compared with individuals with low fear of heights who react more flexibly and adaptively to posture destabilization. This group difference was evident already at ground level but further increased during virtual height exposure. Discussion: Our data show that fear of height significantly affects posture adaptation to balance-destabilizing events. Our findings demonstrate that the assessment of postural behavior during threatening situations in the virtual reality environment provides valuable insights into the mechanisms of balance control and may be used to develop novel strategies aimed at prevention of falls. The ground reaction force (GRF) recorded by a platform when a person stands upright lies at the interface between the neural networks controlling stance and the body sway deduced from centre of pressure (CoP) displacement. It can be decomposed into vertical (VGRF) and horizontal (HGRF) vectors. Few studies have addressed the modulation of the GRFs by the sensory conditions and their relationship with body sway. We reconsidered the features of the GRFs oscillations in healthy young subjects (n = 24) standing for 90 s, with the aim of characterising the possible effects of vision, support surface and adaptation to repeated trials, and the correspondence between HGRF and CoP time-series. We compared the frequency spectra of these variables with eyes open or closed on solid support surface (EOS, ECS) and on foam (EOF, ECF). All stance trials were repeated in a sequence of eight. Conditions were randomised across different days. The oscillations of the VGRF, HGRF and CoP differed between each other, as per the dominant frequency of their spectra (around 4 Hz, 0.8 Hz and <0.4 Hz, respectively) featuring a low-pass filter effect from VGRF to HGRF to CoP. GRF frequencies hardly changed as a function of the experimental conditions, including adaptation. CoP frequencies diminished to <0.2 Hz when vision was available on hard support surface. Amplitudes of both GRFs and CoP oscillations decreased in the order ECF > EOF > ECS ≈ EOS. Adaptation had no effect except in ECF condition. Specific rhythms of the GRFs do not transfer to the CoP frequency, whereas the magnitude of the forces acting on the ground ultimately determines body sway. The discrepancies in the time-series of the HGRF and CoP oscillations confirm that the body's oscillation mode cannot be dictated by the inverted pendulum model in any experimental conditions. The findings emphasise the robustness of the VGRF "postural rhythm" and its correspondence with the cortical theta rhythm, shed new insight on current principles of balance control and on understanding of upright stance in healthy and elderly people as well as on injury prevention and rehabilitation. Objective: The observers use the optic flow to control self-motion. However, the current state of knowledge indicates that it is difficult to understand how optic flow is used by the visual system without a direct measurement of the changes in the flow patterns caused by eye movements during natural behaviour. The purpose of this literature review is to highlight the importance of the integration between optic flow and eye movements for postural control. Methods: A literature review of the electronic papers through July 2022 was independently performed by three investigators. The selection of the studies was made by a search on PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar with two groups of selected keywords. We excluded papers performed on subjects with pathologies, children, and the elderly. Results: The results of this literature analysis highlight that eye movements are required to drive visual motion processing and heading perception in both static and dynamic contexts. Conclusion: Although we now know many neural mechanisms that process heading direction from the optic flow field, a consideration of optic flow patterns relative to gaze direction provides more detailed information on how the retinal flow field is used to control body balance. Recently, the transient characteristics of postural sway have been suggested as an alternative or an improvement to traditional whole-trial analyses, possibly reflecting the sensory reweighing process. The purpose of this study was to assess if the transient characteristics of postural sway are sensitive to age and postural tasks. Twenty young adults (18–27 years old) and fifteen older adults (67–80 years old) performed parallel (eyes open and eyes closed), tandem and single-leg postural tasks for 30 s. Centre of pressure (CoP) velocity, amplitude and frequency were derived from force plate data. In addition to whole-trial estimates, we calculated the relative differences between the 1st and the 2nd (DIF_21) and the 1st and the 3rd (DIF_31) 10 s time intervals. Postural sway increased with the difficulty of the task, and the increase was more pronounced in the older adult group (p < 0.001; η2 = 0.31–0.38 for group × task interactions). Large and statistically significant age × task interactions were shown for both DIF_21 and DIF_31 for CoP anterior–posterior frequency (p < 0.001; η2 = 0.17–0.18). Possible age differences were also indicated for the transient response in CoP medial–lateral velocity in the parallel stance task. Specifically, we found an exaggerated transient response (i.e., relatively higher COP velocity in the first 10 s) in older adults compared to young adults when visual information was restored during the parallel quiet stance. Patients with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) suffer from sensorimotor impairments. Evidence is emerging that cervical spine plays an important role in mTBI, but it is not known how cervicocephalic kinaesthetic sensibility measured during dynamic unpredictable head movements and measures of position sense, cervical induced postural balance and eye movement control differ between mTBI, whiplash associated disorders (WAD) patients, idiopathic neck pain patients and healthy controls. Are cervical sensorimotor deficits present in mTBI patients and do they differ from sensorimotor deficits found in traumatic and nontraumatic neck pain patients and whether they differ from healthy controls. Twenty idiopathic neck pain patients, 18 WAD, 17 mTBI and 20 healthy controls were enroled in the study. Frequency and velocity of centre of pressure movements were measured during parallel stance in the neutral and neck torsion positions, gain and smooth pursuit neck torsion difference of eye movements during smooth pursuit neck torsion test (SPNTT) and cervicocephalic kinaesthesia using Butterfly and head-to-neutral relocation test. Statistically significant differences in postural balance, both tests of cervicocephalic kinaesthesia and SPNTT were observed between healthy controls and all patient groups. No differences were observed between patient groups for SPNTT, Butterfly and head-to-neutral relocation test, but differences were present in postural balance between mTBI and both groups of patients with neck pain disorders. Differences were found in the ML direction for mTBI, but not differences were found for AP direction. Results of our study show that mTBI present with similar impairment in cervical driven sensorimotor deficits as patients with neck pain disorders, but they differ from healthy individuals. Clinical practice would benefit from identifying cervical spine related sensorimotor impairments in patients with mTBI. Moving in synchrony with one another is a fundamental mechanism that maintains human social bonds. Yet, not all individuals are equally likely to coordinate their behaviors with others. The degree of interpersonal coordination is greatly influenced by pre-existing characteristics of the interacting partners, like the cultural homogeneity of a group, shared goals, and the likability of the other person. Considering that most research questions necessitate an experimental set-up without such uncontrolled biases, we created a novel, unbiased paradigm: a human-avatar body sway synchronization paradigm. Participants' body sway was measured by a force plate while being exposed to a medio-laterally moving avatar. Forty-nine participants were tested in a social condition (motionless vs. moving avatar) and a non-social control condition (motionless vs. moving column). The results revealed that participants increased their body sway on their medio-lateral axis while the avatar was moving. The participants did not increase their body sway in the non-social control condition, indicating that the participant's movement was not simply caused by a basal motion perception process. The current study builds a methodological fundament that can help to reduce biases due to pre-existing rapport between interaction partners and serves as a valuable experimental paradigm for future synchrony studies. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether and how anaerobic fatigue induced by sport-specific exercise affects the postural control of highly-trained adolescent road cyclists. Twenty-three male athletes, aged 15–18 years, were included in the study. Postural control was assessed using the pedobarographic platform (bipedal upright stance, sequentially, with eyes open (EO) and closed (EC) for 60 s each, with a 30 s interval), before and 3 min after a 30 s all-out effort performed on the ergometer. The results showed significant increases in the 95%-confidence ellipse area (p-value 0.000 and 0.001 for EO and EC, respectively), as well as centre-of-pressure (CoP) range displacement in the anteroposterior (p-value 0.000 for both EO and EC) and mediolateral (p-value 0.011 and 0.001 for EO and EC, respectively) planes. In addition, a significant decrease in CoP mean sway frequency was observed (p-value 0.000 and 0.001 for EO and EC, respectively), but no changes were noted in CoP mean velocity (p-value 0.316 and 0.670 for EO and EC, respectively). In our study, it has been indicated that anaerobic fatigue induced by sport-specific exercise deteriorates postural control in adolescent cyclists. Emotional cues draw attention, thereby enabling enhanced processing. Electrophysiological brain research in humans suggests that increased gamma band activity and decreased alpha band activity over posterior brain areas is associated with the allocation of attention. However, emotional events can alternate quickly, like rapidly changing news items and it remains unknown whether the modulation of brain oscillations happens in a stimulus induced manner, changing with each individual stimulus, or whether the events lead to prolonged, state-like changes. To investigate this, we measured the electroencephalogram (EEG) during a passive viewing task (N = 32) while emotional pictures International Affective Picture System (IAPS) were presented in blocks containing either pleasant and neutral or unpleasant and neutral pictures. As predicted, we found decreased alpha and increased gamma power over posterior areas in response to unpleasant compared to pleasant pictures (and also compared to neutral pictures for gamma power). When testing the neutral pictures of the unpleasant and pleasant block against each other, we found no significant difference, which speaks to a stimulus induced effect of alpha and gamma power rather than a state effect. In addition, the inter-trial interval (ITI) between the pictures did not differ between the unpleasant and pleasant block either, corroborating this conclusion. Since emotional pictures can at the same time elicit a freezing-like response and we were interested in whether this freezing-like response co-occurs with enhanced attention, we also collected postural sway data. However, within this EEG-setup, postural analyses indicated no stimulus-related effects nor a correlation with EEG-data. We interpret the alpha and gamma band results as reflecting event-related attention toward unpleasant compared to pleasant (and neutral) pictures and discuss this finding in light of previous EEG research and in combination with behavioral research on threat-induced reductions in body sway (freezing-like response). To assess the reliability and minimal detectable change (MDC) of weight-bearing asymmetry (WBA) and body sway (BS) during "eyes open" (EO) and "eyes closed" (EC) conditions for those with right brain damage (RBD) and left brain damage (LBD) at a chronic stage. Sixteen RBD and 16 LBD patients participated in two sessions within 15 days, composed of two trials of 30 s using a double force platform. Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC2,1), the standard error of measurement (SEM), and MDC were calculated for WBA and BS (area and velocity of sway). Reliability of WBA was excellent (>0.75) except for EC for LBD patients (low SEM was found). The condition of EC was similar to or less reliable than that of EO. The MDC of WBA was 5.4 and 7.3% for LBD and RBD patients, respectively. Velocity of sway should be favored over the area of sway due to better reliability, with an MDC of 9 and 13 mm/s for RBD and LBD patients, respectively. Parameters related to WBA and BS were highly reliable, without a difference between RBD and LBD patients, but less so in the condition of EC, and could be used for clinical rehabilitation and/or research. Weight-bearing asymmetry (WBA) and body sway (BS) are highly reliable posturography parameters. Reliability of WBA/BS is similar among right brain damaged (RBD) and left brain damaged (LBD) patients. Background: Postural instability is a major disabling factor in patients with advanced Parkinson's disease (PD) and often resistant to treatment. Previous studies indicated that imbalance in PD may be reduced by low-intensity noisy galvanic vestibular stimulation (nGVS). Objective: To investigate the potential mode of action of this therapeutic effect. In particular, we examined whether nGVS-induced reductions of body sway in PD are compatible with stochastic resonance (SR), a mechanism by which weak sensory noise stimulation can paradoxically enhance sensory information transfer. Methods: Effects of nGVS of varying intensities (0–0.7 mA) on body sway were examined in 15 patients with PD standing with eye closed on a posturographic force plate. We assumed a bell-shaped response curve with maximal reductions of sway at intermediate nGVS intensities to be indicative of SR. An established SR-curve model was fitted on individual patient outcomes and three experienced human raters had to judge whether responses to nGVS were consistent with the exhibition of SR. Results: nGVS-induced reductions of body sway compatible with SR were found in 10 patients (67%) with optimal improvements of 23±13%. In 7 patients (47%), nGVS-induced sway reductions exceeded the minimally important clinical difference (optimal improvement: 30±10%), indicative of strong SR. This beneficial effect was more likely in patients with advanced PD (R = 0.45; p = 0.045). Conclusions: At least half of the assessed patients showed robust improvements in postural balance compatible with SR when treated with low-intensity nGVS. Introduction: Huntington's disease (HD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder with motor, cognitive, and psychiatric symptoms that typically manifest in middle adulthood. Balance assessments may be useful for predicting disease onset and progression, but studies are limited. We aimed to enhance estimates of HD onset using an inexpensive and practical body sway assessment device [i.e., Wii Balance Board (WBB)].Methods: We assessed total body sway (TBS) on 64 HD gene carriers [Presymptomatic HD (PsHD; n = 16); Prodromal HD (ProHD; n = 16); HD (n = 32)] and 21 demographically similar normal controls (NC) employing a WBB and custom-designed laptop software. Participants completed balance test trials that included combinations of eyes open or closed while standing on a stable versus unstable surface. Non-parametric analyses were conducted to assess group differences in TBS conditions.Results: The HD group had significantly higher TBS in most balance conditions relative to NC, PsHD, and ProHD groups (ps < .05). Importantly, the ProHD group demonstrated higher TBS relative to NC in all balance conditions (ps < .05) with medium to large effect size ranges (r≥ 0.40). No differences in TBS were exhibited between NC and PsHD groups (ps > .05).Conclusions: Increased body sway, easily evaluated using a brief, objective balance assessment, may serve as an important functional marker in patients with, and during the transition to, HD. The ability to coordinate with others is fundamental for humans to achieve shared goals. Often, harmonious interpersonal coordination requires learning, such as ensemble musicians rehearing together to synchronize their low‐level timing and high‐level aesthetic musical expressions. We investigated how the coordination dynamics of a professional string quartet changed as they learned unfamiliar pieces together across eight trials. During all trials, we recorded each musician's body sway motion data, and quantified the group's body sway similarity (cross‐correlation) and information flow (Granger causality) on each trial. In line with our hypothesis, group similarity increased, while group information flow decreased significantly across trials. In addition, there was a trend such that group similarity, but not information flow, was related to the quality of the performances. As the ensemble converged on a joint interpretation through rehearsing, their body sways reflected the change from interpersonal information flow for coordinative mutual adaptations and corrections, to synchronous musical coordination made possible by the musicians learning a common internally based expressive interpretation. Background: In order to determine possible pathological deviations in body weight distribution and body sway, it is helpful to have reference values for comparison: gender and age are two main influencing factors. For this reason, it was the aim of the present study to present reference values for women between 51 and 60 years of age. Methods: For this study, 101 subjectively healthy female Germans aged between 51 and 60 years (55.16 ± 2.89 years) volunteered and were required to stand in a habitual posture on a pressure measuring platform. Results: The average BMI of this age group was 25.02 ± 4.55 kg/m². The left and right foot showed an almost evenly balanced load distribution with a median load of 52.33% on the left foot [tolerance interval (TR) 38.00%/68.03%; confidence interval (CI) 51.00%/53.33%] and 47.67% on the right foot [TR 31.97%/62.00%; CI 46.67%/49.00%]. The measured median load of the forefoot was 33.33% [TR 21.37%/54.60%; CI 30.67%/36.00%] and that of the rear foot was 66.67% [TR 45.50%/78.63%; CI 64.00%/69.33%]. The median body sway in the frontal plane was 11 mm [TR 5.70 mm/26.30 mm; CI 10.00 mm/11.67 mm] and that of the sagittal plane was 16 mm [TR 7.37 mm/34.32 mm; CI 14.67 mm/18.67 mm]. The median ellipse area was 1.17 cm² [TR 0.29 cm²/4.96 cm²; CI 0.98 cm²/1.35 cm²], the median ellipse width was 0.91 cm [TR 0.42 cm/1.9 cm; CI 0.84 cm/1.02 cm] and its height was 0.40 cm [TR 0.22 cm/0.89 cm; CI 0.38 cm/0.43 cm]. Conclusions: The left-to-right ratio is almost balanced. The load distribution of the forefoot to the rear foot is approximately 1:2. The median body sway values for the frontal and sagittal planes (11 and 16 mm, respectively) agree with other values. The values for the height, body weight and the BMI are comparable to the values of average German women at this age; therefore, the measured values show a presentable cross section of women in the 51–60 age group in Germany. The present data can be used as a basis for women aged 51–60 years and can support the detection of possible dysfunctions as well as injury prevention in the parameters of postural control. For individuals with altered sensory cues, vibrotactile feedback improves their balance control. However, should vibrotactile feedback be provided every time balance control is compromised, or only one-third of the time their balance is compromised? We hypothesized that vibrotactile feedback would improve balance control more when provided every time their balance is compromised. Healthy young adults were randomly assigned to two groups: group 33% feedback (6 males and 6 females) and group 100% feedback (6 males and 6 females). Vibrotactile feedbacks related to the body's sway angle amplitude and direction were provided, while participants stood upright on a foam surface with their eyes closed. Then, we assessed if balance control improvement lasted when the vibrotactile feedback was removed (i.e., post-vibration condition). Finally, we verified whether or not vibrotactile feedback unrelated to the body's sway angle and direction (sham condition) altered balance control. The results revealed no significant group difference in balance control improvement during vibrotactile feedback. Immediately following vibrotactile feedback, both groups reduced their balance control commands; body sway velocity and the ground reaction forces variability decreased. For both groups, unrelated vibrotactile feedback worsened balance control. These results confirmed that participants processed and implemented vibrotactile feedback to control their body sways. This study examined the effects of static magnetic exposure on body sway during a static posture. The subjects were located 80 cm away from the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner, and their motions were captured by a motion‐capture system. The average exposure level was 65 ± 8 mT (n = 15) at the head position. The results were compared with those from control conditions acquired at the console room. Small increments in the total sway paths and the anterior/posterior sway paths were detected through magnetic field exposure condition. When individuals stand, they sway and so have to maintain their balance. It is generally expected that task performance is worse when standing and swaying than when sitting and therefore not swaying. In contrast, we hypothesized that greater sway is associated with better task performance in the absence of external perturbations of posture. Twenty-four healthy, young adults performed two goal-directed, modified Stroop tasks (incongruent and reversed incongruent) in four body position conditions (standing against a vertical surface, and standing freely with a wide, standard or narrow stance). Centre of pressure (COP) sway, head sway, eye movements, visual attention, and task performance were recorded. Partial correlation analyses showed significant positive associations between task performance and some COP and head sway variables, after controlling for the level of visual attention. Analyses of variance with three factors (body position, task difficulty, target distance) also showed significant interaction effects between body position (and therefore postural sway) and the number of accurate target findings. The presence of these interactions showed that narrow stance was both the best body position for performing the incongruent task and the worst body position for performing the reversed incongruent task. Overall, COP sway and head sway can increase task performance. Hence, healthy, young adults in quiet stance appear to use sway to explore their environment more effectively. Sway Area and Path Length of the Centre of Pressure (CoP) were also calculated. VGRF RMS (as well as CoP sway measures) increased in the order EO Solid ≈ EC Solid < EO Foam < EC Foam. The VGRF frequency spectra featured prevailing frequencies around 4–5 Hz under all tested conditions, slightly higher on Solid than Foam support. Around that value, the VGRF frequencies varied in a larger range on hard than on compliant support. Sway Area and Path Length were inversely related to the prevailing VGRF frequency. Vision compared to no-vision decreased Sway Area and Path Length and VGRF RMS on Foam support. However, no significant effect of vision was found on VGRF mean frequency for either base of support condition. A description of the VGRF, at the interface between balance control mechanisms and sway of the CoP, can contribute information on how upright balance is maintained. Analysis of the frequency pattern of VGRF oscillations and its role in the maintenance of upright stance should complement the traditional measures of CoP excursions in the horizontal plane.

The ground reaction force (GRF) recorded by a platform when a person stands upright lies at the interface between the neural networks controlling stance and the body sway deduced from centre of pressure (CoP) displacement. It can be decomposed into vertical (VGRF) and horizontal (HGRF) vectors. Few studies have addressed the modulation of the GRFs by the sensory conditions and their relationship with body sway. We reconsidered the features of the GRFs oscillations in healthy young subjects (n = 24) standing for 90 s, with the aim of characterising the possible effects of vision, support surface and adaptation to repeated trials, and the correspondence between HGRF and CoP time-series. We compared the frequency spectra of these variables with eyes open or closed on solid support surface (EOS, ECS) and on foam (EOF, ECF). All stance trials were repeated in a sequence of eight. Conditions were randomised across different days. The oscillations of the VGRF, HGRF and CoP differed between each other, as per the dominant frequency of their spectra (around 4 Hz, 0.8 Hz and EOF > ECS ≈ EOS. Adaptation had no effect except in ECF condition. Specific rhythms of the GRFs do not transfer to the CoP frequency, whereas the magnitude of the forces acting on the ground ultimately determines body sway. The discrepancies in the time-series of the HGRF and CoP oscillations confirm that the body’s oscillation mode cannot be dictated by the inverted pendulum model in any experimental conditions. The findings emphasise the robustness of the VGRF “postural rhythm” and its correspondence with the cortical theta rhythm, shed new insight on current principles of balance control and on understanding of upright stance in healthy and elderly people as well as on injury prevention and rehabilitation.

Background: Diabetic retinopathy is a principal cause of visual damage and blindness, in which laser treatment offers proven therapy. The progressive degeneration of the retina, secondary to diabetes, is believed to cause postural instability although this is not well documented. The aim of this research was to assess how optic flow stimuli contribute to the control of stance in people with impaired retinal functions.Research Question: Does the different retinal functionality correspond to different specific patterns of movements and muscles recruitment?Methods: Postural mechanisms and motor strategies were measured by testing subjects in quiet stance on a force platform with surface electromyography under different optic flow stimulations. Root mean square values of the center of pressure time-varying signals and normalized EMG values were used to evaluate the postural sway.Results: People with diabetic retinopathy, and to a greater extent laser group, were more unstable than healthy subjects. The greater amplitude of the body sway observed in the retinopathy group, and especially in the laser group, could be an expression of the difficulty for this population in processing this kind of visual information.Significance: The increase in muscle activity indicates that there are musculoskeletal and postural changes in the lower limb musculature with increasing severity of diabetic retinopathy. Abstract Objectives Symmetrical dental occlusion blocking is used in dentistry as a quick diagnostic tool to test for potential influences of the craniomandibular system on body sway and weight distribution. This study presents the changes of body sway and pressure distribution in healthy subjects, free of a temporomandibular dysfunction (TMD). Immediate effects between occlusal blocking and rest position on body sway and body weight distribution in general, as well as for both genders and for four age decades will be evaluated. Recently, the transient characteristics of postural sway have been suggested as an alternative or an improvement to traditional whole-trial analyses, possibly reflecting the sensory reweighing process. The purpose of this study was to assess if the transient characteristics of postural sway are sensitive to age and postural tasks. Twenty young adults (18–27 years old) and fifteen older adults (67–80 years old) performed parallel (eyes open and eyes closed), tandem and single-leg postural tasks for 30 s. Centre of pressure (CoP) velocity, amplitude and frequency were derived from force plate data. In addition to whole-trial estimates, we calculated the relative differences between the 1st and the 2nd (DIF_21) and the 1st and the 3rd (DIF_31) 10 s time intervals. Postural sway increased with the difficulty of the task, and the increase was more pronounced in the older adult group (p < 0.001; η2 = 0.31–0.38 for group × task interactions). Large and statistically significant age × task interactions were shown for both DIF_21 and DIF_31 for CoP anterior–posterior frequency (p < 0.001; η2 = 0.17–0.18). Possible age differences were also indicated for the transient response in CoP medial–lateral velocity in the parallel stance task. Specifically, we found an exaggerated transient response (i.e., relatively higher COP velocity in the first 10 s) in older adults compared to young adults when visual information was restored during the parallel quiet stance. This study shows the potential for an application of measures of the transient behavior of postural sway after the removal or restoration of visual information.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate whether information on extraocular muscle proprioception without visual information affects postural control. Methods: Thirty-five healthy young volunteers participated in the study. Postural control outcomes included the center of pressure (CoP) for static standing, the total length of the sway of the CoP (LNG), and the sway area (SA), as well as the mean CoP in the mediolateral and anteroposterior directions. The following five eye-fixing positions were used: eye-up (E-Up), eye-down (E-Down), eye-right (E-Right), eye-left (E-Left), and eye-center (Center eye position). One-way ANOVA and Bonferroni correction was performed for statistical processing. Electrooculograms were recorded to detect eye orientation errors, measured with the eyes closed. Results: The results of this study showed no significant difference between the LNG and SA results when comparing respective eye positions (E-up, E-down, E-right, E-left) relative to E-Center (control). However, the average CoP was shifted to the right at E-Up, E-Down, and E-Left. Background: Fear of falling (FOF) is a psychological condition that can lead to increased morbidity and mortality in the elderly population. However, the subjective and multidimensional nature of FOF results in limitations of existing FOF measurement tools, which could influence the generalization of the findings from various studies. An objective measure of FOF could address those limitations. The present study aimed to identify the feasibility of using center of pressure (COP) parameters to quantify FOF.Research Question: (1) Are 360º roller coaster videos effective to induce FOF? And (2) Which COP parameter(s) is/are feasible to quantify FOF?Methods: Nineteen young, healthy adults (24 ± 2.47 years) were recruited in the present study. Subjects were required to watch three 360º videos: one control video and two roller coaster videos, through virtual reality goggles during standing and sitting. Six trials (3 during standing and 3 during sitting) with video were performed. Subjects were required to rate their FOF on a visual analogue scale after watching each video. COP mean power frequency, COP root mean square, and COP range were measured. The Friedman test was used to assess differences in COP parameters under different video conditions, and Spearman's correlation analysis was used to assess the relationship between FOF and COP parameters.Results: Similar COP changes were observed in sitting and standing conditions. With increased FOF, participants demonstrated decreased COP mean power frequency and increased COP root mean square in the medial-lateral direction during both sitting and standing.Significance: Our study provided evidence that 360º roller coaster videos are effective tools to induce FOF and change in COP parameters. The relationship between FOF and COP parameters suggests that the measurement of body sway may be an objective way to quantify FOF. More research are needed to solidify the evidence. Objective: This study aims to determine whether changes in dental occlusion are correlated to body posture during walking and running.Methods: Fifteen healthy subjects were assessed by a prosthodontist and deemed asymptomatic. Analyses of gait and running were performed in three conditions, in random order: a) occlusal splint; b) placebo splint; and c) no splint. The occlusal splint used in this study positioned the mandible in a stable position. Kinematic data was collected using a 3D motion capture system.Results: Changes in dental occlusion induced by occlusal splints did not influence body sway during gait or running. No significant differences were found between any of the test conditions.Conclusion: Occlusal splints have no effect on body sway during gait or running. Postural instability marks a prevalent symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD). It often manifests in increased body sway, which is commonly assessed by tracking the Center of Pressure (CoP). Yet, in terms of postural control, the body's Center of Mass (CoM), and not CoP is what is regulated in a gravitational field. The aim of this study was to explore the effect of early- to mid-stage PD on these measures of postural control in response to unpredictable visual perturbations. We investigated three cohorts: (i) 18 patients with early to mid-stage PD [Hoehn & Yahr stage (1–3); 1.94 ± 0.70]; (ii) a group of 15 age-matched controls (ECT); and (iii) a group of 12 young healthy adults (YCT). Participants stood on a force plate to track their CoP, while the movement of their entire body was recorded with a video-based motion tracking system to monitor their CoM. A moving room paradigm was applied through a head-mounted virtual reality headset. The stimulus consisted of a virtual tunnel that stretched in the anterior-posterior direction which either remained static or moved back and forth in an unpredictable fashion.We found differences in mean sway amplitude (MSA) and mean velocities of CoP and CoM between the groups under both conditions, with higher MSA of CoP and CoM for PD and higher mean velocities of both variables for PD and ECT when compared with YCT. Visual perturbation increased mean CoP velocity in all groups but did not have effects on mean CoM velocity or MSA. While being significantly lower for the young adults, the net effect of visual perturbation on mean CoP velocity was similar between patients with PD and age-matched controls. There was no effect of the visual perturbation on mean CoM velocity for any of the groups.Our simultaneous assessment of CoP and CoM revealed that postural control is reflected differently in CoM and CoP. As the motion of CoM remained mostly unaffected, all groups successfully counteracted the perturbation and maintained their balance. Higher CoP velocity for PD and ECT revealed increased corrective motion needed to achieve this, which however was similar in both groups. Background: Postural sway during quiet standing has been shown as a useful task to assess risk of falling in older adults. While the risk of falling is consistently reported to be higher in older females than males, the sex-related differences in postural sway are not consistent across the studies.Research Question: What are the effects of age and sex on postural sway during quiet standing during different stance conditions?Methods: We examined the effects of age (40 young and 34 older adults), sex (37 males and 37 females), and their interaction on the postural sway during different stance conditions. We compared the center of pressure (CoP) velocity, amplitude and frequency during parallel (eyes open and eyes closed) and semi-tandem (eyes open) stances.Results: Our results suggest that postural sway is similar between sexes in young participants, while older males exhibit larger postural sway than older female participants (10/21 outcomes). Older female participants exhibited lower CoP amplitude (but larger total and anterior-posterior CoP velocity) compared to young female participants. We also found that the increase in the postural sway with increasing task difficulty is more pronounced in older vs. young adults.Significance: This study shows that ageing-related changes in postural sway are sex- and task-specific. Virtual reality (VR) enables individuals to be exposed to naturalistic environments in laboratory settings, offering new possibilities for research in human neuroscience and treatment of mental disorders. We used VR to study psychological, autonomic and postural reactions to heights in individuals with varying intensity of fear of heights. Study participants (N = 42) were immersed in a VR of an unprotected open-air elevator platform in an urban area, while standing on an unstable ground. Virtual elevation of the platform (up to 40 m above the ground level) elicited robust and reliable psychophysiological activation including increased distress, heart rate, and electrodermal activity, which was higher in individuals suffering from fear of heights. In these individuals, compared with individuals with low fear of heights, the VR height exposure resulted in higher velocity of postural movements as well as decreased low-frequency (<0.5 Hz) and increased high-frequency (>1 Hz) body sway oscillations. This indicates that individuals with strong fear of heights react to heights with maladaptive rigidity of posture due to increased weight of visual input for balance control, while the visual information is less reliable at heights. Our findings show that exposure to height in a naturalistic VR environment elicits a complex reaction involving correlated changes of the emotional state, autonomic activity, and postural balance, which are exaggerated in individuals with fear of heights.
