We found experimentally that Cherenkov-type terahertz radiation produced by optical rectification of ultrashort laser pulses in LiNbO 3 can experience strong spectral broadening in the regime of multiphoton laser absorption. The broadening is attributed to the terahertz emission from a surge current of the optically generated carriers. The effect can be used to improve the bandwidth of optical-to-terahertz converters based on optical rectification.

It is known that a structure comprising a tens of microns thick, and ∼1 × 1 cm 2 in size, layer of LiNbO 3 attached to a Si prism can serve as an efficient Cherenkov-type converter of tens of microjoules-energy femtosecond laser pulses to broadband terahertz radiation. Here we experimentally demonstrate scaling up the terahertz energy and field strength by extending the width of the converter to several centimeters, expanding appropriately the pump laser beam, and increasing the pump pulse energy to hundreds of microjoules. In particular, chirped Ti:sapphire laser pulses of 450 fs duration and 600 µJ energy were converted to 1.2 µJ terahertz pulses, and 0.5 MV/cm peak terahertz field was obtained when pumping by unchirped laser pulses of 60 fs duration and 200 µJ energy.

A nonlinear optical converter of femtosecond laser pulses to terahertz radiation, which combines the tilted-pulse-front pumping and prism coupling techniques, is proposed and experimentally tested. In contrast to the conventional tilted-pulse-front scheme with a prism-shaped LiNbO 3 crystal, the converter consists of a plane-parallel LiNbO 3 plate sandwiched between two dielectric prisms. One prism is used to couple the pump beam into the LiNbO 3 plate, another prism couples the generated terahertz radiation out of the plate. The proposed scheme enables scaling to large-diameter LiNbO 3 wafers and large-aperture high-energy pump laser beams resulting in generation of strong terahertz fields. In a proof-of-principle experiment with a 1-mm thick, small size (1 × 2 cm 2 ) LiNbO 3 plate pumped by a mJ-class laser, the conversion efficiency comparable to that of the conventional scheme (∼0.1%) was demonstrated.

It was recently predicted [Phys. Rev. A95(6), 063817 (2017) 10.1103/PhysRevA.95.063817] that an intense femtosecond laser pulse propagating in an electro-optic crystal and producing free carriers via multiphoton ionization can generate a unipolar electromagnetic precursor propagating ahead of the laser pulse. Here we report the experimental observation of this phenomenon in a GaP crystal excited by an amplified Ti:sapphire laser.

We propose and experimentally prove efficient high-resolution electro-optic sampling measurement of broadband terahertz waveforms in a LiNbO 3 crystal in the configuration with the probe laser beam propagating along the optical axis of the crystal. This configuration allows one to avoid the detrimental effect of strong intrinsic birefringence of LiNbO 3 without any additional optical elements. To achieve velocity matching of the terahertz wave and the probe beam, the terahertz wave is introduced into the crystal through a Si prism at the Cherenkov angle to the probe beam. The workability of the scheme at different wavelengths of the probe optical beam (800 and 1550 nm) is demonstrated.

A nonlinear structure for efficient Cherenkov-type terahertz emission from ultrashort laser pulses is proposed, modeled, and experimentally demonstrated. The structure comprises a thin (a few tens of micrometers thick) layer of lithium niobate sandwiched between two silicon prisms. A focused-to-a-line laser pulse propagates in the layer and generates a Cherenkov wedge of terahertz radiation in the prisms. The radiation experiences total internal reflection in the prisms and emerges into free space as two adjacent beams collinear to the pump laser beam. The structure can generate a centimeter-wide terahertz beam with high transverse uniformity and a flat frequency spectrum. An optical-to-terahertz conversion efficiency as high as 0.35% is achieved with 10-µJ laser pulses. It can be further enhanced by reducing the thickness of the lithium niobate layer.

Terahertz generation by optical rectification of femtosecond laser pulses propagating in a 40- μ m thick LiNbO 3 layer attached to an output Si prism has been experimentally investigated for different laser wavelengths from 800 to 2100 nm. For longer wavelengths, the saturation of the optical-to-terahertz conversion efficiency has been observed at higher laser pulse energies, thus enabling higher efficiencies. In particular, record high conversion efficiency of 1.3% has been achieved with 30- μ J laser pulse energy at 2100 nm.

It is commonly adopted that the widely used method of terahertz generation by tilted-pulse-front pumping of a lithium niobate crystal is optimized when both the tilted front of the pump optical pulse and the image of the diffraction grating, which introduces the tilt, are parallel to the exit surface of the crystal. We consider more general situations. In particular, we show that a deviation of the grating image plane from parallel to the crystal exit surface leads to deterioration of the terahertz beam quality but does not significantly affect the terahertz energy. If the grating image plane and the crystal exit surface are mutual parallel, but they are nonparallel to the pulse front, the terahertz beam quality remains unaffected and the terahertz energy can be unexpectedly higher (about two times for pump pulses of a ~400 fs duration) than in the standard scheme. We propose a modified design of the tilted-pulse-front scheme based on our findings.

We report efficient high-resolution electro-optic sampling detection of broadband terahertz radiation by measuring direct intensity modulation of a femtosecond fiber laser beam induced by terahertz field in a 1-cm thick GaAs crystal.

The temporal evolution of a plasma channel at the trail of a self-guided femtosecond laser pulse was studied experimentally and theoretically in air, nitrogen (with an admixture of ∼3% O_{2}), and argon in a wide range of gas pressures (from 2 to 760 Torr). Measurements by means of transverse optical interferometry and pulsed terahertz scattering techniques showed that plasma density in air and nitrogen at atmospheric pressure reduces by an order of magnitude within 3-4 ns and that the decay rate decreases with decreasing pressure. The argon plasma did not decay within several nanoseconds for pressures of 50-760 Torr. We extended our theoretical model previously applied for atmospheric pressure air plasma to explain the plasma decay in the gases under study and to show that allowance for plasma channel expansion affects plasma decay at low pressures.

We propose a scheme for an experimental verification of the reversed Cherenkov effect in left-handed media. The scheme uses optical-to-terahertz conversion in a planar sandwichlike structure that consists of a nonlinear core cladded with a material that exhibits left-handedness at terahertz frequencies. The focused into a line femtosecond laser pulse propagates in the core and emits Cherenkov wedge of terahertz waves in the cladding. We developed a theory that describes terahertz generation in such a structure and calculated spatial distribution of the generated terahertz field, its energy spectrum, and optical-to-terahertz conversion efficiency. The proposed structure can be a useful tool for characterization of the electromagnetic properties of metamaterials in the terahertz frequency range.

We demonstrate experimentally the efficiency of a recently proposed scheme of terahertz generation based on Cherenkov emission from ultrashort laser pulses in a sandwich structure. The structure has a thin nonlinear core covered with a prism of low terahertz absorption. Using an 8 mm long Si-LiNbO(3)-BK7 structure with a 50 microm thick LiNbO(3) core, we converted 40 microJ, 50 fs Ti:sapphire laser pulses into terahertz pulses of approximately 3 THz bandwidth with a record efficiency of over 0.1%.

We show that the usual Fresnel formulas for a free-propagating pulse are not applicable for a forced terahertz electromagnetic pulse supported by an optical pulse at the end of a nonlinear crystal. The correct linear reflection and transmission coefficients that we derive show that such pulses can experience a gain or loss at the boundary. This energy change depends on linear dielectric constants only. We also predict a regime where a complete disappearance of the forced pulse under oblique incidence occurs, an effect that has no counterpart for free-propagating pulses.

The Cherenkov wakes excited by intense laser drivers in a perpendicularly magnetized plasma are a potential source of high-power terahertz radiation. We present a two-dimensional (2D) theory of the emission of magnetized wakes excited by a short laser pulse. The 2D model reveals the important role of the transverse size of the laser pulse missed in previous simple one-dimensional estimations of the radiation. We derived expressions for the radiated fields and for the angular/frequency distribution of the radiated energy. Beats in the radiation pattern behind the moving pulse are predicted and explained. For the interpretation of existing experimental results, the time dependence of the energy flux parallel and perpendicular to the laser path is examined.
