Purpose: Diabetic nephropathy represents the leading cause of end-stage kidney disease in developed countries. Cardiovascular outcome trials have found that in participants who received a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP1RA) and a sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitor (SGLT2i), the risk of incidence and progression of diabetic nephropathy in type 2 diabetes mellitus was reduced. The aim of this study was to compare the decline in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) among people taking a GLP1RA with that among people taking an SGLT2i in a real-world setting., Methods: Data for 478 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus who initiated therapy with a GLP1RA (n = 254) or an SGLT2i (n = 224) between January 1, 2018 and December 31, 2021 were extracted. The primary outcome was any reduction ≥30% in eGFR after the start of therapy. Weight loss and drug discontinuation were also assessed., Findings: Over a median follow-up of 24 months, an eGFR reduction ≥30% occurred in 34 of 254 patients (13.4%) starting a GLP1RA and in 26 of 223 patients (11.6%) starting an SGLT2i (hazard ratio = 0.89; 95% CI, 0.54-1.49; P = 0.67). Median eGFR change over the whole follow-up was similar between groups (SGLT2i: median, -2 mL/min/1.73 m 2 ; 25th, 75th percentile, -13, 8 mL/min/1.73 m 2 ; GLP1RA: median, 0 mL/min/1.73 m 2 ; 25th, 75th percentile, -10, 7 mL/min/1.73 m 2 ; P = 0.54). No worsening of kidney function was observed, even when considering the ratio eGFR mean. The value of eGFR at baseline indicated a statistically significant indirect correlation with the observed absolute value of eGFR change over the follow-up (ρ = -0.36; P < 0.001). The difference in eGFR changes over time observed by eGFR categories was statistically significant (P = 0.0001) in both treatment groups. No significant differences in weight loss and drug discontinuations were observed between groups., Implications: Although acting on different molecular mechanisms, both GLP1RA and SGLT2i might have similar effects on eGFR decline in diabetes, as suggested by the results of the present study conducted in a real-world setting. Biodurability is one of the main determinants of asbestos hazardousness for human health. Very little is known about the actual persistence of asbestos in lungs and its clearance, nor about differences in this regard between the different mineralogical types of asbestos. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the amount, the dimensional characteristics and the mineralogic kinds of asbestos in lungs (measured using SEM-EDS) of a series of 72 deceased subjects who were certainly exposed to asbestos (mainly crocidolite and chrysotile) during their life. Moreover, we investigated possible correlations between the lung burden of asbestos (in general and considering each asbestos type), as well as their dimension (length, width, and l/w ratio) and the duration of exposure, the latency- in case of malignant mesothelioma (MM), the survival and the time since the end of exposure. In 62.5% of subjects, asbestos burden in lungs was lower that the threshold considered demonstrative for occupational exposure. In 29.1% of cases no asbestos was found. Chrysotile was practically not detected. The mean length of asbestos fibers and the length to width ratio were significantly related to the duration of exposure to asbestos. No other statistically significant correlations were found between the amount and dimensional characteristics of asbestos (nor with the relative amount of each asbestos type) and the other chronological variables considered. In conclusion, it was pointed out that chrysotile can be completely removed from human lungs in <8 years and, instead, amphiboles persist much more time. The present results suggest, as well, that the finding of no asbestos in lungs cannot rule out the attribution of MM to asbestos (in particular, chrysotile) inhaled in an occupational setting. Increased mortality due to malignant mesothelioma has been demonstrated by several epidemiologic studies in the area around Broni (a small town in Lombardy, northern Italy), where a factory producing asbestos cement was active between 1932 and 1993. Until now, the inorganic fiber burden in lungs has not been investigated in this population. The aim of this study is to assess the lung fiber burden in 72 individuals with previous occupational and/or anthropogenic environmental exposure to asbestos during the activity of an important asbestos cement factory. Inorganic fiber lung burden was assessed in autoptic samples taken from individuals deceased from asbestos-related diseases using a scanning electron microscope equipped with an energy-dispersive spectrometer. Significant differences in the detected amount of asbestos were pointed out among the three types of exposure. In most lung samples taken from patients who died of mesothelioma, very little asbestos (or, in some cases, no fibers) was found. Such subjects showed a significantly lower median amount of asbestos as compared to asbestosis. Almost no chrysotile was detected in the examined samples. Overall, crocidolite was the most represented asbestos, followed by amosite, tremolite/actinolite asbestos, and anthophyllite asbestos. There were significant differences in the amount of crocidolite and amosite fibers according to the kind of exposure. Overall, these findings provide novel insights into the link between asbestos exposure and mesothelioma, as well as the different impacts of the various types of asbestos on human health in relation to their different biopersistences in the lung microenvironment.

The potential of phytoremediation as a treatment option for olive mill wastewater (OMW) was tested on five perennial tree species. Cupressus sempervirens and Quercus ilex proved tolerant to six-month OMW treatment followed by six-month water irrigation, whereas Salix sp. and Laurus nobilis and, later, Pinus mugo suffered from phytotoxic effects. Test plants were compared to controls after treatment and irrigation, by monitoring biochemical and microbiological variations in the rhizosphere soil. OMW-treated soils were exposed to 50-fold higher phenols concentrations, which, irrespective of whether the respective plants were OMW-resistant or susceptible, were reduced by more than 90% by the end of the irrigation cycle, owing to significantly increased laccase, peroxidase and β-glucosidase activities, recovery/acquisition of bacterial culturability and transitory development of specialized fungal communities sharing the presence of Geotrichum candidum. Of all results, the identification of Penicillium chrysogenum and Penicillium aurantiogriseum as dominant rhizosphere fungi was distinctive of OMW-tolerant species., (Copyright © 2010 Elsevier Ltd. A vast bibliography on nutrient effects on high-density cultures exists, while it has been overlooked that low densities of starving cells are often the rule in natural environments. By means of a novel sensitive beta-galactosidase assay, we examined Escherichia coli transitions to minimal media when the cell concentration was 100 to 10,000 cells per ml. As in high-density cultures, the enzyme activity depended on amino acid availability and was subject to catabolite repression and stringent control. In all conditions tested, despite the presence of other nutrient sources, the relationship between beta-galactosidase activity and the l-amino acid pool was hyperbolic. The affinity constant when the amino acid pool was the only nutrient source averaged 14 muM after 90 min and increased up to 222 muM after 4.5 h. While investigating the transition from lag phase to exponential phase, we observed that the cells did not enter into starvation mode in the presence of amino acids, even when the nutrient amount was insufficient to support full survival. Based on these premises, the switch from starvation to hunger was investigated in relation to the amino acid pools. A critical range of concentrations at which E. coli linearly synthesized beta-galactosidase despite, at the same time, suffering a large decrease in cell viability was then recognized. Since both beta-galactosidase production and the dilution rate were reduced by more than half in the absence of leucine, we examined the contribution of leucine to cell recovery capabilities.
