This study describes the SPUR questionnaire’s finalization and psychometric evaluation.Patients and Methods: Data were collected through an online survey among patients with type 2 diabetes included by general practitioners and diabetologists in France. The survey included four questionnaires, SPUR and three validated adherence measures: BMQ, MARS and ACCEPT. Item-level analysis and a partial credit model (PCM) were performed to refine the response option coding of SPUR items. The final item selection of SPUR was defined using a PCM and a principal component analysis (PCA). Construct validity, concurrent validity and known-groups validity were assessed on the final SPUR questionnaire.Results: A total of 245 patients (55% men, mean age of 63 years) completed the survey remotely and were included in this analysis. Refining response option coding allowed a better discrimination of patients on the latent trait. After item selection, a short, an intermediate, and a long form composed the final SPUR questionnaire. The short form will be used to screen patients for risk and then the other forms will allow the collection of further information to refine the risk assessment and decide the best levers for action. Results obtained were supportive of the construct validity of the forms. Their concurrent validity was demonstrated: moderate to high significant correlations were obtained with BMQ, MARS and ACCEPT scores. Their known-groups validity were shown with a logical pattern of higher scores obtained for patients considered non-adherent and significant differences between the scores obtained for patients considered adherent versus non-adherent.Conclusion: SPUR is a valid tool to evaluate the risk of non-adherence of patients, allowing effective intervention by providing insights into the respective individual reasons for lack of adherence.Keywords: digital questionnaire, non-adherence drivers, psychometric validation, Rasch modelling

17. How do we drive a renaissance for national island conservation in Australia?

Abstract

Australia’s approach to managing and conserving its offshore islands as important national assets warrants urgent review. There is a growing realisation that the current trajectory of loss of natural heritage on islands must be reversed, particularly in an era of increasing climate change. We propose a role description and an organisational model for a national Australian Islands Alliance that champions conservation action, prioritises investments aligned to risks, and that connects partners at a strategic national level. A national alliance offers important opportunity to assess threats and report on condition. Four key foundations underpin a national alliance dedicated to championing island care and expert management: (1) management informed by evidence; (2) sound return on investment; (3) national coordination in partnership with States and Territories; and (4) community participation inclusive of Aboriginal peoples’ and Torres Strait Islanders’ custodial rights and interests. The message from experiences shared across Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific region is that traditional island custodians and stakeholders are vital partners to restoration efforts. These shared learnings collectively demonstrate the time is now for Australia to move forward with a respectful and unified direction to progress successful and sustainable island conservation and restoration.

20. Evaluating Classroom Speaking.

Abstract

As one of a series of sharply focused booklets based on concrete educational needs, this booklet provides teachers with educational theory and research on evaluating classroom speaking and presents suggestions for the application of the theory in regular classroom situations. The section on theory and research begins by describing a model of the evaluation process, then discusses various rating errors in the evaluation process. With the theoretical basis for rating and speech evaluation in mind, the section on practice examines several teaching issues that emerge when actually rating speeches in the classroom setting. These issues include when and how to evaluate speaking performances, the modes of evaluation, who should make the evaluations, and suggestions for constructing an evaluation instrument. The concluding section contains sample copies of 13 evaluation forms and descriptions of their intended uses. A list of references is provided. (RL)

Abstract

Até que ponto a urbanização e a industrialização afetam a estrutura e as funções da família é um tema controvertido na sociologia há alguns anos tem-se dito que tais processos causam a desintegração das grandes unidades de parentesco em unidades nucleares independentes e isoladas. Os proponentes desta posição sugerem que as condições de vida urbana industrial incentivaram e até exigiram um certo grau de migração, a mobilidade social, lares pequenos e a transferência das funções familiares a outras instituições. A manutenção de grandes famílias e relações de família estendidas vê-se como sendo oposto à urbanização e à industrialização. Uma posição contrária e mais recente é que é possível manter-se importantes laços de parentesco no meio urbano industrial. Os proponentes desta teoria sugerem que enquanto as condições das sociedades modernas talvez encorajem famílias nucleares separadas, estas condições não impedem a interação de parentesco. Os meios rápidos de comunicação e transporte facilitam a manutenção de interação entre as diferentes unidades familiais conjugais que existem separadamente mas que fazem parte de um conjunto familiar mais extenso; esta relação estrutural tem sido chamada "família estendida modificada". (Goode, 1963; 10 ss.; Goode, 1964: 108-110; Sussman, 1965; Litwak, 1965: 292 ss.)A controvérsia mencionada continua existindo não só entre os estudiosos nos E.U.A., mas em outras partes do mundo que passam pelo processo de modernização.
