Catalytic tar cracking is a promising technique for hot syngas cleaning unit in gasification plants because it can preserve tars chemical energy, so increasing the syngas heating value. The cost associated with catalyst preparation is a key issue, together with its deactivation induced by coke deposition. Iron is a cheap and frequently used catalyst, which can also be found in some industrial wastes. The study aims to assess the catalytic efficiency for tar cracking of two waste-derived materials (red mud and sewage sludge) having high content of iron. The catalysts were supported on spheres of γ-Al 2 O 3 , and their efficiency was compared to that of a pure iron catalyst. The role of support was investigated by testing pure red mud, with and without the support. A series of long-term tests using naphthalene as tar model compound were carried out under different values of process temperatures (750 °C-800 °C) and steam concentrations (0 %-7.5 %). The waste derived catalysts showed lower hydrogen yields compared to pure iron catalyst, due to their lower content of iron. On the other hand, the conversion efficiencies of all the tested catalysts resulted rather similar, since the Alkali and Alkaline-Earth Metallic species present on the surface of waste-derived catalyst help in preventing coke deposition. The iron oxidation state appears to play an important role, with reduced iron more active than its oxidised form in the tar cracking reactions. Background: Causes and mechanisms underlying cancer cachexia are not fully understood, and currently, no therapeutic approaches are available to completely reverse the cachectic phenotype. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) has been extensively described as a key factor in skeletal muscle physiopathology, exerting opposite roles through different signalling pathways., Methods: We employed a three-dimensional ex vivo muscle engineered tissue (X-MET) to model cancer-associated cachexia and to study the effectiveness of selective inhibition of IL-6 transignalling in counteracting the cachectic phenotype. Conditioned medium (CM) derived from C26 adenocarcinoma cells was used as a source of soluble factors contributing to the establishment of cancer cachexia in the X-MET model. A dose of 1.2 ng/mL of glycoprotein-130 fused chimaera (gp130Fc) was added to cachectic culture medium to neutralize IL-6 transignalling., Results: C26-conditioned medium induced a cachectic-like phenotype in the X-MET, leading to a decline of muscle mass (-60%; P < 0.001), a reduction in myosin expression (-92.4%; P < 0.005) and a reduction of the contraction frequency spectrum (-94%). C26-conditioned medium contains elevated amounts of IL-6 (8.61 ± 4.09 pg/mL) and IL6R (56.85 ± 10.96 pg/mL). These released factors activated the signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) signalling in the C26&#95;CM X-MET system (phosphorylated STAT3/TOTAL +54.6%; P < 0.005), which in turn promote an enhancement of Il-6 (+69.2%; P < 0.05) and Il6r (+43%; P < 0.05) gene expression, suggesting the induction of a feed-forward loop. The selective neutralization of IL-6 transignalling, by gp130Fc, in C26&#95;CM X-MET prevented the hyperactivation of STAT3 (-55.8%; P < 0.005), countered the reduction of cross-sectional area (+28.2%; P < 0.05) and reduced the expression of proteolytic factors including muscle ring finger-1 (-88%; P < 0.005) and ATROGIN1 (-92%; P < 0.05), thus preserving the robustness and increasing the contractile force (+20%) of the three-dimensional muscle system. Interestingly, the selective inhibition of IL-6 transignalling modulated gene regulatory networks involved in myogenesis and apoptosis, normalizing the expression of pro-apoptotic miRNAs, including miR-31 (-53.2%; P < 0.05) and miR-34c (-65%; P < 0.005), and resulting in the reduction of apoptotic pathways highlighted by the sensible reduction of cleaved caspase 3 (-92.5%; P < 0.005) in gp130Fc-treated C26&#95;CM X-MET., Conclusions: IL-6 transignalling appeared as a promising target to counter cancer cachexia-related alterations. The X-MET model has proven to be a reliable drug-screening tool to identify novel therapeutic approaches and to test them in preclinical studies, significantly reducing the use of animal models., (© 2023 The Authors. The study compares the environmental performances of a new-generation, large scale, combustion-based waste-to-energy unit, active since 2010, with those of different "virtual" units, defined in the light of the Best Available Techniques REFerence document (BREF) for Waste Incineration published by the European Community on December 2019. The average performances of these units have been evaluated in terms of air emissions, material consumptions and energy recovery, based on data related to 355 "existing" European waste incineration lines and those established for the future "new" plants. An attributional Life Cycle Assessment has been used to compare and quantify the environmental performances of the selected units, all equipped with a moving grate furnace and similar air pollution control systems. A sensitivity analysis quantifies how even more severe requests for emission and energy performances as well as the evolution of the European electricity mix until the year 2030 can affect the comparative assessment. The results indicate that the considered large scale waste-to-energy plant has good environmental performances, even in an electricity mix characterised by 45% of renewable sources. This allows an easy compliance with the Best Available Techniques Associated Emission Levels of the new waste incineration BREF document. Despite more than 50 years of investigations into the free radical theory, the direct role of oxidative stress (OS) in aging and age-related diseases remains unproven. Little progress in identifying antioxidant drugs promoting longevity has been made, likely due to selectivity toward one or few radical species, variable efficacy in vivo, inherent pro-oxidant behavior of such drugs, or lack of synergism with metabolic redox homeostasis. Silencing the wide range of reactive free radicals has a great impact on OS-linked outcomes and age-related disorders. Here we show that an innovative, redox-active, multi-radical-scavenger catalytic drug delays the age-associated decline in physiological processes and markedly prolongs the mean lifespan of the adult freshwater annelids Aeolosoma viride by 170%. This unprecedented extension is associated with a decreased OS status. Consistently, treatment of annelids increases their natural resistance to oxygen-derived damage without affecting mitochondrial respiration or reproductive activity. Conversely, the superoxide dismutase (SOD)-mimetic EUK 134 that we selected as a positive control led to an increase in lifespan of ~50%, the same increase previously observed in nematodes. Our results show that reduction of the global network of OS has a profound impact on aging, prompting the development of a possible redox-based therapeutic intervention to counteract the progression of aging., (© The Author 2014. Introduction: No case of single-incision laparoscopic surgery in obese patients who had previously undergone multiple midline vertical laparotomies has been described in the literature to date. Hence we report the first case of single-port laparoscopic salpingo-oophorectomy in an obese patient who was affected by a left adnexal mass and who had previously undergone 3 midline vertical laparotomies., Case Description: A postmenopausal 57-year-old woman with a body mass index of 31.2 kg/m(2) and a history of 3 midline vertical cesarean deliveries and a right salpingooophorectomy was diagnosed with a left adnexal mass and underwent a single-incision laparoscopic salpingo-oophorectomy., Discussion: The patient was treated successfully. The operative blood loss was minimal. The postoperative hospital stay lasted 18 hours, and postoperative pain was short-lasting. No early or long-term postoperative complications were registered. On histopathologic examination, a diagnosis of ovarian serous cystadenoma was made. Even though this unique case is the first to be reported in the literature, its encouraging results suggest the use of this new surgical technique in similar clinical situations to verify whether the feasibility and safety reported in this article are confirmed.

Objective: To evaluate the incidence and significance of coronary blood flow visualisation in early onset severe intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) fetuses and to assess its relationship with the presence of reverse flow in ductus venosus (DV)., Methods: The examination of coronary artery was performed at a gestational age <26 weeks in 19 IUGR fetuses from mothers without medical complications and characterised by the presence of reverse flow in DV. Visualisation or non-visualisation of coronary circulation were compared with fetal and neonatal outcome., Results: Coronary flow was seen in 7/19 (36.8%) of the IUGR fetuses and these fetuses showed a higher incidence of fetal death (71.4%vs. 16.6%, p = 0.044), delivery or fetal death at an earlier gestational age (23.71 vs. 26.57 weeks, p = 0.011) and a lower birthweight (310 vs. 586 g, p = 0.011). Kaplan-Meier survival analysis demonstrated that visualisation or non-visualisation of coronary flow in such fetuses provides an independent contribution in the prediction of the time interval between Doppler study and delivery or fetal death (chi square = 15.36, p < 0.001)., Conclusions: Visualisation of coronary flow in IUGR fetuses with reverse flow in the DV identifies a subgroup of fetuses with a poorer fetal and neonatal outcome.

Cytoplasmic aspartate aminotransferase from beef kidney loses 25% of its activity on nitration with tetranitromethane while the apoenzyme about 95%. In the holoenzyme 0.5 tyrosine residue and 1.0 tyrosine residue in the apoenzyme are nitrated per enzyme protomer. In addition 1 cysteine residue per protomer is oxidized in both. The presence of substrates, alpha-ketoglutarate and glutamate, both at ten times their Km values, does not change these results. Mercaptoethanol does not affect the residual activity of either the nitrated holo or apoenzyme. Dithionite abolishes the activity of the nitrated holoenzyme by reducing tha coenzyme moiety. It has no effect on the native holoenzyme or on either the native or nitroapoenzyme.
