In this paper we address the Hadamard product of linear varieties not necessarily in general position. In $\mathbb{P}^2$ we obtain a complete description of the possible outcomes. In particular, in the case of two disjoint finite sets X and X' of collinear points, we get conditions for their hadamard product to be either a collinear finite set of points or a grid of | X|| X'| points. In $\mathbb{P}^3,$ under suitable conditions (which we prove to be generic), we show that the hadamard product of X and X' consists of | X||X'| points on the two different rulings of a non-degenerate quadric and we compute its Hilbert function in the case |X| = |X'|., Comment: to apper in Journal of Algebra and its Applications

Let T be a weighted tree with n numbered leaves and let D be its distance matrix, so D(i,j) is the distance between the leaves i and j. If m is an integer between 2 and n, we prove a tropical formula to compute the m-dissimilarity map of T (i.e. the weights of the subtrees of T with m leaves), given D. For m equal to 3, we present a tropical description of the set of m-dissimilarity maps of trees. For m equal to 4, a partial result is given., Comment: 13 pages

In this paper we address the question if, for points $$P, Q \in \mathbb {P}^{2}$$ P , Q ∈ P 2 , $$I(P)^{m} \star I(Q)^{n}=I(P \star Q)^{m+n-1}$$ I ( P ) m ⋆ I ( Q ) n = I ( P ⋆ Q ) m + n - 1 and we obtain different results according to the number of zero coordinates in P and Q. Successively, we use our results to define the so called Hadamard fat grids, which are the result of the Hadamard product of two sets of collinear points with given multiplicities. The most important invariants of Hadamard fat grids, as minimal resolution, Waldschmidt constant and resurgence, are then computed.

- Abstract
We show how to construct a stick figure of lines in P3using the Hadamard product of projective varieties. Then, applying the results of Migliore and Nagel, we use such a stick figure to build a Gorenstein set of points with given h-vector h. Since the Hadamard product is a coordinate-wise product, we show, at the end, how the coordinates of the points, in the Gorenstein set, can be directly determined.

- Abstract
Road casualties represent the leading cause of death among young people worldwide, especially in poor and developing countries. This paper introduces a Bayesian hierarchical model to analyse car accidents on a network lattice that takes into account measurement error in spatial covariates. We exemplified the proposed approach analysing all car crashes that occurred in the road network of Leeds (UK) from 2011 to 2019. Our results show that omitting measurement error considerably worsens the fit of the model and attenuates the effects of spatial covariates.

- Abstract
High-income inequality, accompanied by substantial regional differentiation, is still a great challenge for social policymakers in many European countries. One of the important elements of this phenomenon is inequality between income distributions of men and women. Using data coming from EU-SILC 2018, we compare the distribution of income for Italy and Poland, and analyze gender gap in these countries. We are interested here to uncover the socioeconomic factors that could contribute to explain the differences observed in the income distribution for men and women.

- Abstract
We investigate here the stability of the obtained results of a variable selection method recently introduced in the literature, and embedded into a model-based classification framework. It is applied to chemometric data, with the purpose of selecting a few wavenumbers (of the order of tens) among the thousands measured ones, to build a (robust) decision rule for classification. The robust nature of the method safeguards it from potential label noise and outliers, which are particularly dangerous in the field of food-authenticity studies. As a by-product of the learning process, samples are grouped into similar classes, and anomalous samples are also singled out. Our first results show that there is some variability around a common pattern in the obtained selection.

- Abstract
Depending on the selected hyper-parameters, cluster weighted modeling may produce a set of diverse solutions. Particularly, the user can manually specify the number of mixture components, the degree of heteroscedasticity of the clusters in the explanatory variables and of the errors around the regression lines. In addition, when performing robust inference, the level of impartial trimming enforced in the estimation needs to be selected. This flexibility gives rise to a variety of “legitimate” solutions. To mitigate the problem of model selection, we propose a two stage monitoring procedure to identify a set of “good models”. An application to the benchmark tone perception data showcases the benefits of the approach.

- Abstract
We present a Bayesian nonparametric group-dependent mixture model for clustering. This is achieved by building a hierarchical structure, where the discreteness of the shared base measure is exploited to cluster the data, between and within groups. We study the properties of the group-dependent clustering structure based on the latent parameters of the model. Furthermore, we obtain the joint distribution of the clustering induced by the hierarchical mixture model and define the complete posterior characterization of interest. We construct a Gibbs sampler to perform Bayesian inference and measure performances on simulated and a real data.

- Abstract
High quality medical assistance and preventive strategies, including pursuing a healthy lifestyle, result in a progressively growing percentage of older people. The population and workforce is aging in all countries of the world. It is widely recognized that older individuals show an increased susceptibility to infections and a reduced response to vaccination suggesting that the aged immune system is less able to react and consequently protect the organism. The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic is dramatically showing us that the organism reacts to novel pathogens in an age-dependent manner. The decline of the immune system observed in aging remains unclear. We aimed to understand the role of B cells. We analyzed peripheral blood from children (4-18 years); young people (23-60 years) and elderly people (65-91 years) by flow cytometry. We also measured antibody secretion by ELISA following a T-independent stimulation. Here we show that the elderly have a significant reduction of CD27dull memory B cells, a population that bridges innate and adaptive immune functions. In older people, memory B cells are mostly high specialized antigen-selected CD27bright. Moreover, after in vitro stimulation with CpG, B cells from older individuals produced significantly fewer IgM and IgA antibodies compared to younger individuals. Aging is a complex process characterized by a functional decline in multiple physiological systems. The immune system of older people is well equipped to react to often encountered antigens but has a low ability to respond to new pathogens.

- Abstract
The difference between females’ and males’ income is one of the main topics in the analysis of gender gap, as it is known that, even with a higher educational level, females earn less than males do. To inspect this, we analyse and estimate the distribution of the ratio of females’ income over males’ income using the methodology based on the distribution of the ratio of two Dagum with three parameters. We applied this method to the Bank of Italy Survey on Household Income and Wealth (SHIW) data to evaluate the deciles, the density functions, and the cumulative distribution functions of the ratio of the females’ income over males’ income in different age classes, Italian areas, and years.

- Abstract
Grimsholm et al. show that CD27dull and CD27bright represent sequential MBC developmental stages. T cell- and germinal center (GC)-independent CD27dull MBCs are the plastic source of strongly selected and GC-dependent CD27bright MBCs. CD27dull MBCs, able to expand and differentiate in response to change, ensure stability and flexibility of human B cell memory.

- Abstract
With increasing pressure on space in cities, we are seeing greater development underground. Despite the multiple benefits of underground space, its social value is underappreciated and no market for underground space utilisation exists. The result is that underground space is not planned, engineered or managed in a way to realise its potential value. This paper presents findings from a Think Deep UK initiative which explored the social value of underground space and evaluated the UK’s Social Value Act which embraces social, economic and environmental benefits. It was found that the main drivers to evaluate social value for infrastructure projects are cost and risk which are intimately linked with the scheme’s design life. As such, only tractable, evidence-based benefits are easily accounted for. It is suggested that social value frameworks should be flexible and incorporate qualitative measures of value across different timescales so that long-term benefits for future generations are planned.

- Abstract
Vici syndrome is a human inherited multi-system disorder caused by recessive mutations in EPG5, encoding the EPG5 protein that mediates the fusion of autophagosomes with lysosomes. Immunodeficiency characterized by lack of memory B cells and increased susceptibility to infection is an integral part of the condition, but the role of EPG5 in the immune system remains unknown. Here we show that EPG5 is indispensable for the transport of the TLR9 ligand CpG to the late endosomal-lysosomal compartment, and for TLR9-initiated signaling, a step essential for the survival of human memory B cells and their ultimate differentiation into plasma cells. Moreover, the predicted structure of EPG5 includes a membrane remodeling domain and a karyopherin-like domain, thus explaining its function as a carrier between separate vesicular compartments. Our findings indicate that EPG5, by controlling nucleic acids intracellular trafficking, links macroautophagy/autophagy to innate and adaptive immunity.

Background Patients on dialysis may have abnormal serum levels of Ca, P and parathyroid hormone, with related bone diseases. This population has an increased risk of death, with cardiovascular calcification (CC) a contributing factor. Patients on peritoneal dialysis appear to be at increased risk of hyperlipidemia, a contributing factor to atherosclerotic plaque formation. Although several studies have described the presence and progression of CC in hemodialysis populations, there are fewer data in patients on peritoneal dialysis. Study design The Renal Osteodystrophy and Calcifications: Key factors in Peritoneal Dialysis (ROCK-PD) study was a 36-month, prospective observational study conducted in Italy. The study examined the presence and progression of CC in two cardiac valves and five arterial sites. The potential associations of serum Ca and P with mortality and cardiovascular morbidity, demographic, clinical and blood chemistry variables was investigated. Results CC was present in 77% of patients at baseline ( N = 369) and in 90% of patients by study end ( N = 145), progressing in 73% of patients. There were 42 deaths (11%). Analyses showed a marked correlation between baseline P levels and the presence of left ventricular hypertrophy. However, there were no consistent correlations between serum Ca or P with mortality or morbidity. Conclusions CC was common in peritoneal dialysis patients and progressed in a majority of patients.

Computer Simulation ,Biological Evolution - Abstract
Computer models and computer simulations are crucial for understanding complex phenomena because they compel the explicit enumeration of all variables and the exact specification of all relations between them. In this paper we discuss a computer model for a phenotypical theory of evolution which, in our opinion, is well suited to simulate the complex dependence of speciation on both internal and external factors, through their influences on the fertility factor. Some of these dependences are investigated through simulations.
