Abstract

Recent results on the structure of 47Ca will be presented. The nucleus of interest was populated via the cold-neutron capture 46Ca(n,γ) reaction, on a rare 46Ca target, during the EXILL experimental campaign at the nuclear reactor of Institut Laue- Langevin in Grenoble. High-resolution γ-ray spectroscopy, performed with a composite array of HPGe detectors, enabled the identification of new transitions deexciting states between the neutron-capture level and the ground state. Experimental data will be compared with a novel microscopic theoretical model, currently under development, specifically designed to describe the low-lying structure of odd-mass nuclei with one valence particle/hole outside a spherical doubly-magic core, using the Skyrme effective interaction self-consistently.

Abstract

The experimental setup GAMIPE used for gyro magnetic factor measurements at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro and a recent experimental work regarding K-isomers in 174W are described. Aim of the experiment is to study the detailed structure of the isomeric states wave functions, by the measurement of the magnetic dipole moments. This piece of information can provide interesting hints for theoretical models. Preliminary results concerning the population of the isomers of interest and half-lives are presented.

Abstract

At the PF1B cold neutron beam line at the Institut Laue Langevin, the EXILL array consisting of EXOGAM, GASP and ILL-Clover detectors was used to perform (n,γ) measurements at very high coincidence rates. About ten different reactions were measured in autumn 2012 using a highly collimated cold neutron beam. In spring 2013, the EXOGAM array was combined with 16 LaBr3(Ce) scintillators in the EXILL&FATIMA campaign for the measurement of lifetimes using the generalised centroid difference method. We report on the properties of the set-ups and present first results from both campaigns.

Abstract

We present recent results on the structure of the one-valence-particle $^{41}$Ca and $^{49}$Ca, and one-valence-hole $^{47}$Ca, nuclei. The isotopes of interest were populated via the cold-neutron capture reactions $^{40}$Ca(n,$\gamma$), $^{48}$Ca(n,$\gamma$) and $^{46}$Ca(n,$\gamma$), respectively. The experiments were performed at the Institut Laue-Langevin, within the EXILL campaign, which employed a large array of HPGe detectors. The $\gamma$ decay and level schemes of these nuclei were investigated by $\gamma$-ray coincidence relationships, leading to the identification of 41, 10, and 6 new transitions in $^{41}$Ca, $^{47}$Ca, and $^{49}$Ca, respectively. Branching ratios and intensities were extracted for the $\gamma$ decay from each state, and $\gamma$-ray angular correlations were performed to establish a number of transition multipolarities and mixing ratios, thus helping in the spin assignment of the states. The experimental findings are discussed along with microscopic, self-consistent beyond-mean-field calculations performed with the Hybrid Configuration Mixing model, based on a Skyrme SkX Hamiltonian. The latter suggests that a fraction of the low-spin states of the $^{41}$Ca, $^{49}$Ca, and $^{47}$Ca nuclei is characterized by the coexistence of either 2p-1h and 1p-2h excitations, or couplings between single-particle/hole degrees of freedom and collective vibrations (phonons) of the doubly-magic "core".

Abstract

We study the transverse propagation of photons in a magnetized vacuum considering radiative corrections in the one-loop approximation. The dispersion equation is modified due to the magnetized photon self-energy in the transparency region ($0<\omega<2m_e$). The aim of our study is to explore propagation of photons in a neutron star magnetosphere (described by magnetized vacuum). The solution of the dispersion equation is obtained in terms of analytic functions. The larger the magnetic field, the lower the phase velocity and the more the dispersion curve deviates from the light-cone. For fixed values of the frequency, we study the dependence of photon time delay with the magnetic field strength, as well as with distance. For the latter, we adopt a magnetic dipole configuration and obtain that -- contrary to the expectation, according to the traditional time delay of photons in the interstellar medium -- photons of higher energy experience a longer time delay. Abstract

The in-beam tests of two Si pixel type TRACE detectors have been performed at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro (Italy). The aim was to investigate the possibility of identifying heavy-ion reactions products with mass A~10 at low kinetic energy, i.e., around 10 MeV. Two separate read-out chains, digital and analog, were used. The Pulse Shape Analysis technique was employed to obtain the identification matrices for the digitally processed part of the data. Separation in both charge and mass was obtained, however, the $\alpha$ particles contaminated significantly the recorded data in the lower energy part. Due to this effect, the identification of the light products ($^{7,6}$Li isotopes) could be possible down only to ~20 MeV, Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

The gamma-ray decay of excited states of the one-valence-proton nucleus 133Sb has been studied using cold-neutron induced fission of 235U and 241Pu targets, during the EXILL campaign at the ILL reactor in Grenoble. By using a highly efficient HPGe array, coincidences between gamma-rays prompt with the fission event and those delayed up to several tens of microseconds were investigated, allowing to observe, for the first time, high-spin excited states above the 16.6 micros isomer. Lifetimes analysis, performed by fast-timing techniques with LaBr3(Ce) scintillators, reveals a difference of almost two orders of magnitude in B(M1) strength for transitions between positive-parity medium-spin yrast states. The data are interpreted by a newly developed microscopic model which takes into account couplings between core excitations (both collective and non-collective) of the doubly magic nucleus 132Sn and the valence proton, using the Skyrme effective interaction in a consistent way. The results point to a fast change in the nature of particle-core excitations with increasing spin.

Abstract

The structure of $^{74}$Se at low energy was investigated via spectroscopy of internal conversion electrons at the INFN Legnaro National Laboratories (LNL). A set of internal K-conversion coefficients and monopole transition strengths was measured. A large ρ2(E0;22+→21+)⋅103=210(130) value was deduced. This result, in addition to a low upper limit for the 03+→02+ electron transition, casts in doubt a simple interpretation of the $^{74}$Se low-lying structure, in particular the recently proposed spherical, vibrational character. New microscopic beyond-mean-field calculations generally agree with the experimental results and are capable of producing a large ρ2(E0;22+→21+) value, even if still a factor ≈7 smaller than the experiment. Triaxiality and a complex shape-coexistence and mixing scenario seem responsible for this unexpected experimental result.

Abstract

A lifetime measurement of the 19/2− state in $^{207}$Pb has been performed using the Recoil Distance Doppler-Shift (RDDS) method. The nuclei of interest were produced in multi-nucleon transfer reactions induced by a $^{208}$Pb beam impinging on a $^{100}$Mo enriched target. The beam-like nuclei were detected and identified in terms of their atomic mass number in the VAMOS++ spectrometer while the prompt γ rays were detected by the AGATA tracking array. The measured large reduced transition probability B(E3,19/2−→13/2+)=40(8) W.u. is the first indication of the octupole phonon at high spin in $^{207}$Pb. An analysis in terms of a particle-octupole-vibration coupling model indicates that the measured B(E3) value in $^{207}$Pb is compatible with the contributions from single-phonon and single particle E3 as well as E3 strength arising from the double-octupole-phonon 6+ state, all adding coherently. A crucial aspect of the coupling model, namely the strong mixing between single-hole and the phonon-hole states, is confirmed in a realistic shell-model calculation.

Abstract

Abstract

WOS: 000414625700003, In the EXILL campaign a highly efficient array of high purity germanium (HPGe) detectors was operated at the cold neutron beam facility PF1B of the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) to carry out nuclear structure studies, via measurements of gamma-rays following neutron-induced capture and fission reactions. The setup consisted of a collimation system producing a pencil beam with a thermal capture equivalent flux of about 10(8) ns(-1)cm(2) at the target position and negligible neutron halo. The targetwas surrounded by an array of eight to ten anti-Compton shielded EXOGAMClover detectors, four to six anti-Compton shielded large coaxial GASP detectors and two standard Clover detectors. For a part of the campaign the array was combined with 16 LaBr3:(Ce) detectors from the FATIMA collaboration. Abstract

In the EXILL campaign a highly efficient array of high purity germanium (HPGe) detectors was operated at the cold neutron beam facility PF1B of the Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) to carry out nuclear structure studies, via measurements of γ-rays following neutron-induced capture and fission reactions. The setup consisted of a collimation system producing a pencil beam with a thermal capture equivalent flux of about 108 n s−1cm−2 at the target position and negligible neutron halo. The target was surrounded by an array of eight to ten anti-Compton shielded EXOGAM Clover detectors, four to six anti-Compton shielded large coaxial GASP detectors and two standard Clover detectors. For a part of the campaign the array was combined with 16 LaBr3:(Ce) detectors from the FATIMA collaboration. The detectors were arranged in an array of rhombicuboctahedron geometry, providing the possibility to carry out very precise angular correlation and directional-polarization correlation measurements. Abstract

International audience; The onset of the deformation in neutron-rich nuclei around A = 100 mass region has for many years remainedone of the most interesting subjects for nuclear spectroscopy study. For the neutron number N = 60, a sudden onsetof the deformation has been observed at the ground state, which is manifested by the presence of rotational bands(e.g. [1]). On the other hand the occurrence of shape coexistence in nuclei with N = 58 and 59, in this region (e.g.[2]), suggests that the evolution of the deformation is a more gradual process. In the yttrium isotopic chain, arotational band above the 4-, 496-keV isomer has been observed in the N = 59, 98Y nucleus, while there was noevidence of the deformed structure in the Y isotopes with neutron number less than N = 59. Our goal was toinvestigate N = 57, 96Y isotope where only a few states were known from beta decay study of 96Sr [3] as well as thelong 9.6-s (1140-keV) isomer [4]. Additionally, we decided to investigate whether deformed structures are stillpresent in the 94Y nucleus which lies 5 neutrons away from the N=60 boundary. So far, very little spectroscopicinformation has been gathered on 94Y – what regards higher spin yrast excitations established was only the presenceof the 1.35-μs, (5+) isomer at 1202 keV excitation energy [5]. This isomer could be used as a starting point for theidentification of structures on top of it.The yttrium-94 and 96 isotopes have been produced by fission of 235U and 241Pu targets induced by coldneutron from the reactor at Institut Laue-Langevin. The level scheme up to excitation energies in excess of 5 MeVhas been established based on multi-fold gamma-ray coincidence relationships measured with the EXILLspectrometer [6] which consists of up to 46 HPGe detectors. By exploiting delayed- and cross-coincidencetechniques, extensive structure has been delineated. During the analysis, over 50 new gamma transitions which feedpreviously known low-spin states as well as the long 9.6-s, 8+ isomer in 96Y isotope have been identified. Moreover,a new isomeric state at 1655-keV excitation energy has been located with half-life of 201 ns. Angular correlationanalysis allows to define spin-parity assignment for most of the identified levels, in particular (6+) for new isomer.By using the delayed-coincidence method it was possible to identify above the 201-ns state a few weak transitions,which seem to form a rotational band, in analogy to the structure above the 4- isomer in the 98Y isotope. In the caseof 94Y isotope over 11 new gamma transitions, which feed the previously known (5+) isomer, have been identified.Angular correlation analysis supported by shell-model consideration allowed to propose spin-parity assignmentsfor some of the new levels.The existence of the new isomeric state and the possible deformed band built on that isomer in the N = 57, 96Yisotope shed new light on the study of the onset of deformation in neutron-rich nuclei around N = 60. It shows thatthe deformed structures appear just after the subshell closure at N = 56 and evolve smoothly when passing throughN = 57-59 isotopes, to became a ground state structure in the 99Y isotope, i.e., at N = 60. The findings are in linewith the 94Y results where only spherical structures are present at low excitation energy.

Abstract

The isovector giant dipole resonance (IVGDR) γ decay was measured in the compound nuclei 80Zr and 81Rb at an excitation energy of E∗=54 MeV. The fusion reaction 40Ca+40Ca at Ebeam=136 MeV was used to form the compound nucleus 80Zr, while the reaction 37Cl+44Ca at Ebeam=95 MeV was used to form the compound nucleus 81Rb at the same excitation energy. The IVGDR parameters extracted from the analysis were compared with the ones found at higher excitation energy (E∗=83 MeV). The comparison allows one to observe two different nuclear mechanisms: (i) the IVGDR intrinsic width remains constant with the excitation energy in the nucleus 81Rb; (ii) the isospin-violating spreading width (i.e., Coulomb spreading width) remains constant with the excitation energy in the nucleus 80Zr. Abstract

International audience; The shape of a particular nucleus results from an interplay between the collective (macroscopic)and single-particle (microscopic) energies and, therefore, highly depends on both the atomicnumber Z and the neutron number N. The neutron-rich nuclei around Z=40 and N=60 provide oneof the best territories for the exploration of this sensitivity. Indeed, the sudden onset ofdeformation observed for neutron-rich nuclei with Z = 36–40 nuclei near N=60 is considered themost dramatic shape change in the nuclear chart. Nevertheless, the resent study of the yttriumisotopic chain reveal occurrence of shape coexistence in the 98Y isotope [1] and possible rotationalband above the 6- isomeric state in the 96Y nucleus [2]. Abstract

The “isospin mixing” phenomenon was measured by the study of the Isovector Giant Dipole Resonance (IVGDR) in 60Zn at two different excitation energies E∗ = 47 MeV and E∗ = 58 MeV. A fusion–evaporation reaction, with a beam of 30S and a target of 28Si, was used to produce the nucleus of interest. A second target of 30Si was used to produce 62Zn. For this nucleus, the mixing effect does not strongly appear in the gamma decay of the GDR and for this reason, the second reaction is necessary as reference. The experimental setup was composed of the GALILEO array (germanium detectors) coupled to large-volume LaBr3(Ce) detectors for the γ-ray measurements. Abstract

International audience; The multipolarity of the main transition leading to the ground state in 210Bi was investigated using the angularcorrelations of γ rays. The analyzed γ -coincidence data were obtained from the 209Bi(n,γ )210Bi experimentperformed at Institut Laue-Langevin Grenoble at the PF1B cold-neutron facility. The EXILL (EXOGAM at theILL) multidetector array, consisting of 16 high-purity germanium detectors, was used to detect γ transitions. Themixing ratio of the 320-keV γ ray was defined by minimizing a multivariable χ2 function constructed from thecoefficients of angular correlation functions for seven pairs of strong transitions in 210Bi. As a result, the almostpure M1 multipolarity of the 320-keV γ ray was obtained, with an E2 admixture of less than 0.6% only (95%confidence limit). Based on this multipolarity the neutron-capture cross section leading to the ground state in210Bi, that decays in turn to radiotoxic 210Po, was determined to be within the limits 21.3(9) and 21.5(9) mb. Thisresult is important for nuclear reactor applications.

Abstract

The experiment was performed at the PF1B cold-neutron facility at the Institut Laue-Langevin in Grenoble (France); International audience; The low-spin structure of the 210Bi nucleus was investigated in the neutron capture experiment 209Bi(n,γ )210Biperformed at ILL Grenoble at the PF1B cold-neutron facility. By using the EXILL multidetector array, consistingof 46 high-purity germanium crystals, and γγ-coincidence technique, 64 primary γ rays were observed (40new) and a total number of 70 discrete states (33 new) were located below the neutron binding energy in 210Bi.The analysis of the angular correlations of γ rays provided information about transitions multipolarities, whichmade it possible to confirm most of the previously known spin-parity assignments and helped establish new ones.The obtained experimental results were compared to shell-model calculations involving one-valence-proton,one-valence-neutron excitations outside the 208Pb core. It has been found that while up to the energy of ∼2 MeVeach state observed in 210Bi has its calculated counterpart; at higher excitation energies some levels cannot bedescribed by the valence particle couplings. These states may arise from couplings of valence particles to the 3−octupole phonon of the doubly magic 208Pb core and may serve as a testing ground for models which describesingle particle-phonon excitations.

Ceruti et al.; 5 págs.; 4 figs.; PACS numbers: 24.30.Cz, 24.60.Dr, 24.80.+y, 25.70.Gh, The isospin mixing was deduced in the compound nucleus Zr80 at an excitation energy of E∗=54 MeV from the γ decay of the giant dipole resonance. The reaction Ca40+Ca40 at Ebeam=136 MeV was used to form the compound nucleus in the isospin I=0 channel, while the reaction Cl37+Ca44 at Ebeam=95 MeV was used as the reference reaction. The γ rays were detected with the AGATA demonstrator array coupled with LaBr3:Ce detectors. The temperature dependence of the isospin mixing was obtained and the zero-temperature value deduced.
