This work investigated the feasibility of enhancing biohydrogen yield from agricultural wheat straw by introducing an electrohydrogenesis process into dark fermentation (DF) and using heat-pretreated activated sludge as inoculum as a strategy to inhibit the methanogens’ growth. The achieved maximum biohydrogen yield was 5.416 mmol H2/g-straw with an energy recovery efficiency of 94.4 %. It reported a maximum coulombic efficiency of 74 % and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency of 81.32 % whereas the maximum NH3-H removal efficiency was 42.25 %. The main volatile fatty acids (VFA) detected at the end of DF were acetic acid, propionic acid, and butyric acid, respectively, reduced by 84.07 %, 77.38 %, and 75.52 % at the end of the second phase of electrohydrogenesis. Moreover, this novel strategy promoted the conversion of lignocellulosic components compared to the non-pretreated activated sludge-catalyzed fermentative bioreactors, where the cellulose, lignin, and hemicellulose removal rates rose by 58.4 %, 55.5 %, and 79.5 %, respectively. These results revealed that coupling the electrohydrogenesis with dark fermentation in the process biocatalyzed by a thermally-pretreated activated sludge remarkably inhibited methanogen growth and improved the biohydrogen yield from agricultural straw residues. Hence, this investigation provides a novel technology utilizing agricultural straw biomass as a bioresource other than waste.

ObjectiveTo study the worldwide prevalence and associated factors of epilepsy in children and adolescents with Cerebral Palsy (CP) and to analyze the differences between various subgroups.MethodWe identified all potential studies on the prevalence of epilepsy in children and adolescents with CP from PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase. The search time was from the establishment of the database to November 2022. Randomized effects meta-analysis models were used to calculate the prevalence of epilepsy in CP. Subgroup analysis and meta-regression were utilized to further explore heterogeneity between articles and prevalence disparities between subgroups. The funnel plot and Egger's test were used to investigate potential publication bias.ResultsSeventy-two articles, comprising 53,969 children and adolescents with CP, were included in this study. The results indicated a total epilepsy prevalence of 38.0% (95% CI: 34.8%–41.2%) in CP. The prevalence of epilepsy was 46.4% (95% CI: 41.4%–51.5%) in clinical sample-based studies and 31.6% (95% CI: 28.7%–34.5%) in population-based studies. Meta-regression demonstrated that the sample source, neonatal seizure, family history of epilepsy, EEG or cranial imaging abnormalities, intellectual/cognitive impairment, and topographical types of CP were heterogeneous contributors to the epilepsy prevalence in CP.ConclusionApproximately one-third of children and adolescents with CP have epilepsy, and the sample source can significantly impact the total prevalence of epilepsy. Neonatal seizures, family history of epilepsy, EEG abnormalities, cranial imaging abnormalities, severe intellectual disability, and quadriplegia may be contributing factors to epilepsy comorbid in CP. Further study is required to verify the strength of these associations with epilepsy. Abstract In this current research, the left-over residues collected from the dark fermentation-microbial electrolysis cells (DF-MEC) integrated system solely biocatalyzed by activated sludge during the bioconversion of the agricultural straw wastes into hydrogen energy, was investigated for its feasibility to be used as a potential alternative biofertilizer to the commonly costly inorganic ones. The results revealed that the electrohydrogenesis left-over residues enriched various plant growth-promoting microbial communities including Enterobacter (8.57%), Paenibacillus (1.18%), Mycobacterium (0.77%), Pseudomonas (0.65%), Bradyrhizobium (0.12%), Azospirillum (0.11%), and Mesorhizobium (0.1%) that are generally known for their ability to produce different essential phytohormones such as indole-3-acetic acid/indole acetic acid (IAA) and Gibberellins for plant growth. Moreover, they also contain both phosphate-solubilizing and nitrogen-fixing microbial communities that remarkably provide an adequate amount of assimilable phosphorus and nitrogen required for enhanced plants or crop growth. Furthermore, macro-, and micronutrients (including N, P, K, etc.) were all analyzed from the residues and detected adequate appreciate concentrations required for plant growth promotions. The direct application of MEC-effluent as fertilizer in this current study conspicuously promoted plant growth (Solanum lycopersicum L. (tomato), Capsicum annuum L. (chilli), and Solanum melongena L. (brinjal)) and speeded up flowering and fruit-generating processes. Based on these findings, electrohydrogenesis residues could undoubtedly be considered as a potential biofertilizer. Thus, this technology provides a new approach to agricultural residue control and concomitantly provides a sustainable, cheap, and eco-friendly biofertilizer that could replace the chemical costly fertilizers.

ObjectiveTo comprehensively evaluate the efficacy of non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) in patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in randomized controlled trials (RCT), providing a reference for future research on the same topic.MethodsFive databases were searched (Pubmed, Web of Science, Medline, Embase, and Cochrane library) and tracked relevant references, Meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.3 software.ResultsTwenty-two references (829 participants) were included. The results of the meta-analysis showed that NIBS had positive effects on repetitive and stereotypical behaviors, cognitive function, and executive function in autistic patients. Most of the included studies had a moderate to high risk of bias, Mainly because of the lack of blinding of subjects and assessors to treatment assignment, as well as the lack of continuous observation of treatment effects.ConclusionAvailable evidence supports an improvement in some aspects of NIBS in patients with ASD. However, due to the quality of the original studies and significant publication bias, this evidence must be treated with caution. Further large multicenter randomized double-blind controlled trials and appropriate follow-up observations are needed to further evaluate the specific efficacy of NIBS in patients with ASD.

Melanoidins (MLDs) are formed through the reaction of carbonyl compounds and amino compounds in the Maillard reaction (MR) during the heating or storage of food. In this study, the formation, chemical composition, and structural characteristics of black garlic (BG) MLDs stored at different temperatures (4 °C, 20 °C, and 35 °C) over a period of 6 months were investigated. The initial products of the MR formed more often at 4 °C and 20 °C, while higher temperatures (35 °C) promoted the reaction in the middle and late stages of the MR. The higher temperature promoted an increase in molecular weight and MLD content, which can be attributed to the increase in protein and phenolic content. Elemental analysis confirmed an increase in nitrogen (N) content and the continuous incorporation of nitrogen-rich substances into the skeleton. Amino acids, particularly aspartic acid and threonine, were the primary N-containing compounds involved in MLD formation. Additionally, the infrared analysis revealed that the changes in MLDs during storage were characterized by amide I and amide II groups. The MR enhanced the yields of heterocyclic compounds (from 56.60% to 78.89%), especially that of O-heterocyclic compounds, at the higher temperature according to Py-GC-MS analysis. Furthermore, the higher temperature enhanced the molecular weight, maximum height, and roughness of MLDs compared to the control. The antioxidant ability of MLDs was positively correlated with storage temperatures. In summary, temperature had an impact on the formation, evolution, and antioxidant activity of MLDs.

Abstract Although the process of microbial degradation of coal to produce biomethane has got much attention from many research works, the products profiles of coal at the initial stage of methanogenic bioconversion are not clear yet. In this study, five coal‐degrading bacterial strains (CD1, CD10, CD20, CD24, and CD25) from a methanogenic community were isolated and identified. Among them, CD1 and CD24 belong to Paenibacillus sp., CD10 and CD20 belong to Bacillus sp., and CD25 belongs to Stenotrophomonas sp. After biotreatment of lignite and bituminous coal, the kinds of newly produced compounds were 33 and 45, respectively. Metabolomics analysis showed that a large number of alkane compounds and heterocyclic aromatic compounds were produced after degradation of bituminous coal and lignite by isolated bacteria, and most of the compounds had been produced in a hydroxylated or acylated manner, indicating that the initial microbial treatment enhanced the bioavailability of coal. Some alkaloids and biosurfactants were also detected in the aforementioned products, such as glycerophosphocholine, proveratrol A, proveratrol B, surfactin, etc. These microbial metabolites may play an important role in solubilization during the degradation of coal. This study added to the understanding of the complicated metabolic process of methanogenic coal bioconversion and enabled effective production of biomethane with appropriate metabolic strategies.

Abstract Background The Xilingol grassland ecosystem has abundant superficial coal reserves. Opencast coal mining and burning of coal for electricity have caused a series of environmental challenges. Biogenic generation of methane from coal possesses the potential to improve economic and environmental outcomes of clean coal utilization. However, whether the microbes inhabiting the grassland soil have the functional potential to convert coal into biomethane is still unclear. Results Microbial communities in an opencast coal mine and in grassland soil covering and surrounding this mine and their biomethane production potential were investigated by Hiseq sequencing and anaerobic cultivation. The microbial communities in covering soil showed high similarity to those in the surrounding soil, according to the pairwise weighted UniFrac distances matrix. The majority of bacterial communities in coal and soil samples belonged to the phyla Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Actinobacteria and Proteobacteria. The dominant bacterial genera in grassland soil included Gaiella, Solirubrobacter, Sphingomonas and Streptomyces; whereas, the most abundant genus in coal was Pseudarthrobacter. In soil, hydrogenotrophic Methanobacterium was the dominant methanogen, and this methanogen, along with acetoclastic Methanosarcina and methylotrophic Methanomassiliicoccus, was detected in coal. Network-like Venn diagram showed that an average of 28.7% of microbial communities in the samples belonged to shared genera, indicating that there is considerable microbial overlap between coal and soil samples. Potential degraders and methanogens in the soil efficiently stimulated methane formation from coal samples by the culturing-based approach. The maximum biogenic methane yields from coal degradation by the microbial community cultured from grassland soil reached 22.4 μmol after 28 day. Conclusion The potential microbial coal degraders and methanogenic archaea in grassland soil were highly diverse. Significant amounts of biomethane were generated from coal by the addition of grassland soil microbial communities. The unique species present in grassland soil may contribute to efficient methanogenic coal bioconversion. This discovery not only contributes to a better understanding of global microbial biodiversity in coal mine environments, but also makes a contribution to our knowledge of the synthetic microbiology with regard to effective methanogenic microbial consortia for coal degradation.

It is important to track fecal sources from humans and animals that negatively influence the water quality of rural rivers and human health. In this study, microbial source tracking (MST) methods using molecular markers and the community-based FEAST (fast expectation–maximization microbial source tracking) program were synergistically applied to distinguish the fecal contributions of multiple sources in a rural river located in Beijing, China. The performance of eight markers were evaluated using 133 fecal samples based on real-time quantitative (qPCR) technique. Among them, six markers, including universal (BacUni), human-associated (HF183-1 and BacH), swine-associated (Pig-2-Bac), ruminant-associated (Rum-2-Bac), and avian-associated (AV4143) markers, performed well in the study. A total of 96 water samples from the river and outfalls showed a coordinated composition of fecal pollution, which revealed that outfall water might be a potential input of the Fsq River. Objective Activating KRAS mutations are the most common drivers in the development of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, unsuccess of treatment by direct inhibition of KRAS has been proven. Deregulation of PI3K signaling plays an important role in tumorigenesis and drug resistance in NSCLC. The activity of PI3Kα-selective inhibition against KRAS-mutated NSCLC remains largely unknown.Methods Cell proliferation was detected by sulforhodamine B assay. Cell cycle distribution and apoptosis were measured by flow cytometry. Cell signaling was assessed by Western blot and immunohistochemistry. RNA interference was used to down-regulate the expression of cyclin D1. Human NSCLC xenografts were employed to detect therapeutic efficacy in vivo.Results CYH33 possessed variable activity against a panel of KRAS-mutated NSCLC cell lines. Although CYH33 blocked AKT phosphorylation in all tested cells, Rb phosphorylation decreased in CYH33-sensitive, but not in CYH33-resistant cells, which was consistent with G1 phase arrest in sensitive cells. Combined treatment with the CDK4/6 inhibitor, PD0332991, and CYH33 displayed synergistic activity against the proliferation of both CYH33-sensitive and CYH33-resistant cells, which was accompanied by enhanced G1-phase arrest. Moreover, down-regulation of cyclin D1 sensitized NSCLC cells to CYH33. Reciprocally, CYH33 abrogated the PD0332991-induced up-regulation of cyclin D1 and phosphorylation of AKT in A549 cells. Co-treatment with these two drugs demonstrated synergistic activity against A549 and H23 xenografts, with enhanced inhibition of Rb phosphorylation.Conclusions Simultaneous inhibition of PI3Kα and CDK4/6 displayed synergistic activity against KRAS-mutated NSCLC. These data provide a mechanistic rationale for the combination of a PI3Kα inhibitor and a CDK4/6 inhibitor for the treatment of KRAS-mutated NSCLC.

Introduction Lumbar disk herniation (LDH) is a common cause of low back pain and dysfunction. Studies have shown that electroacupuncture (EA) can achieve pain relief in patients with LDH. However, there is a lack of evidence regarding the effectiveness of deep EA with strong deqi and shallow EA with no deqi in patients with LDH. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of deep EA with strong deqi and shallow EA with no deqi in the treatment of LDH.Methods and analysis In this randomised controlled trial, patients with LDH who have low back pain with or without radiculopathy for at least 12 weeks will be enrolled. In total, 44 patients will be recruited from the Third Affiliated Hospital of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, Beijing, China. Patients will be randomised into the deep EA group and the shallow EA group in a ratio of 1:1 and will be administered 12 sessions of EA treatment (three times a week for 4 weeks, 20 min for each session). The follow-up duration will be 4 weeks. Low back pain intensity and leg pain intensity (in patients with radicular pain) measured using the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) will be assessed as the primary outcomes. Function (measured using the Roland-Morris Disability Questionnaire), quality of life (measured using the EuroQol Five-Dimensional Five-Level Questionnaire) and patient-evaluated therapeutic effect will be assessed as the secondary outcomes. Patients’ expectations of EA, the success of the blinding method and safety will also be evaluated. Statistical analyses will be followed by the intention-to-treat analysis.Ethics and dissemination This study was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Third Affiliated Hospital of Beijing University of Chinese Medicine (approval number: 2019-XS-ZB06). Renal function estimated by various biomarkers predicting for adverse cardiovascular events has not been well-identified in received percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for chronic total occlusion (CTO), the advanced stages of atherosclerosis. We aim to determine whether the serum cystatin C-based-estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) can have an improved predictive value in patients with CTO lesions undergoing PCI as compared with multiple creatinine-based estimates of kidney function. Six hundred and seventy-one patients received CTO PCI were retrospectively included in the study. The eGFR was calculated by modification of diet in renal disease equation for Chinese (cMDRD) and Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration (CKD-EPI) equations at baseline, respectively. Then, the cohort was categorized into three groups according to standard KDIGO kidney stages based on eGFR. The primary endpoint was all-cause mortality, and the secondary endpoint was cardiac death. Strikingly, cystatin C-based eGFR showed a better performance with the greater area being under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (0.73 for all-cause mortality and 0.73 for cardiac death, separately) and a better assessment for survival free from adverse event across renal levels among four eGFR equations. Compared with eGFR calculated by other formulas, serum cystatin C-based eGFR showed the highest prognostic value for both all-cause mortality (adjusted HR 3.6, 95% CI 1.6–8.1, P = 0.002) and cardiac death (adjusted HR 2.9, 95% CI 1.0–8.1, P = 0.028). Moreover, cystatin C-based eGFR significantly improved the risk reclassification of event with a high value of net reclassification improvement and integrated discrimination improvement. This study may prove that cystatin C-based eGFR is a better predictor of both all-cause mortality and cardiac death than other equations in populations with CTO undergoing PCI.

Ultra-high frequency radio frequency identification (UHF RFID) localization technique has been considered increasingly promising in indoor positioning systems. However, conventional localization algorithms are vulnerable in multipath and non-line of sight (NLOS) environments. To solve this problem, this paper presents an indoor localization method based on angle of arrival and phase difference of arrival (PDOA) using virtual stations for passive UHF RFID. We use the array antenna to distinguish multipath signals and choose the two strongest paths according to the received signal strength to perform localization. The angles of the two paths are obtained through the phase difference of the received signals at different array elements, and the distances of the two paths are estimated through PDOA measurement. After obtaining the angles and distances, we establish virtual stations to convert NLOS paths into LOS paths. The possible positions of the tag are calculated through virtual stations, angle, and distance information, which are derived from the two signal paths. Then, the weighted least squares combined with residual weighted algorithm are proposed to calculate real position of the tag. Simulation results demonstrate that our method achieves decimeter level accuracy and has higher precision than traditional algorithms.

Nitrate (NO3-) plays a pivotal role in stimulating lateral root (LR) formation and growth in plants. However, the role of NO3- in modulating rice LR formation and the signalling pathways involved in this process remain unclear. Phenotypic and genetic analyses of rice were used to explore the role of strigolactones (SLs) and auxin in NO3--modulated LR formation in rice. Compared with ammonium (NH4+), NO3- stimulated LR initiation due to higher short-term root IAA levels. However, this stimulation vanished after 7 d, and the LR density was reduced, in parallel with the auxin levels. Application of the exogenous auxin α-naphthylacetic acid to NH4+-treated rice plants promoted LR initiation to levels similar to those under NO3- at 7 d; conversely, the application of the SL analogue GR24 to NH4+-treated rice inhibited LR initiation to levels similar to those under NO3- supply by reducing the root auxin levels at 10 d. D10 and D14 mutations caused loss of sensitivity of the LR formation response to NO3-. The application of NO3- and GR24 downregulated the transcription of PIN-FORMED 2(PIN2), an auxin efflux carrier in roots. LR number and density in pin2 mutant lines were insensitive to NO3- treatment. These results indicate that NO3- modulates LR formation by affecting the auxin response and transport in rice, with the involvement of SLs.

Single-phase photoanodes often suffer inferior charge transport, which can be mitigated by constructing efficient heterojunctions. Thus, we have fabricated a fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO)/WO3/BiVO4 heterojunction using hydrothermal and spin-coating methods. Surface engineering was exploited to further accelerate the reaction kinetics, which was achieved via post-modification with NaOH solution. This treatment alters the surface chemical state of the BiVO4 nanoparticles, leading to enhanced charge transport and surface water oxidation processes. As a result, the optimized sample can produce a photocurrent more than two times that of WO3. The simple post-treatment provides a viable and cost-effective strategy for promoting the photoelectric properties of photoanodes.

Biohydrogen is a renewable and clean energy source that can be produced from cheap and abundantly available lignocellulose biomass. However, the complex structure of lignocellulose requires various physicochemical and biological pretreatments, as it exhibits significant resistance to microbial degradation. Biosurfactants can play a vital role in facilitating the microbial degradation of lignocellulose and inducing enzymatic hydrolysis. In addition, they can lower the surface tension to impede lignin-cellulase interactions and alter the lignin characteristics. Indeed, the application of lipopeptide biosurfactants to enhance hydrogen production from lignocellulose biomass is poorly studied. Thus, this study investigates the influence of lipopeptide biosurfactants on biohydrogen enhancement from lignocellulose biomass and their impact on short-chain fatty acid generation during anaerobic dark fermentation. Subsequently, Illumina HiSeq 2500 sequencing was employed to analyze the structure of microbial community and diversity significantly affected by the presence or absence of aided biosurfactants. Results revealed that the lipopeptide biosurfactant significantly improved the cumulative biogas and hydrogen production. The maximum cumulative hydrogen yield was achieved in lipopeptide-assisted bioreactors including BioR_3, BioR_2, and BioR_4 (i.e., 4.68, 4.56, and 4.50 mmol/2 g of substrate, respectively), showing an increase of 30.79% to 36.03% higher than BioR_1 (3.44 mmol). In addition, lipopeptide biosurfactants also impacted the short-chain fatty acid generation, where acetic acid, propionic acid, and isobutyric acid were found as major acids. On the other hand, various bacterial phyla, including Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Chloroflexi, Planctomycetota, and Acidobacteriota, were detected in all bioreactors. Among the phyla, Firmicutes were predominated (54.74% to 86.38%) in lipopeptide-assisted bioreactors, indicating that biosurfactants substantially influenced the microbial community structure during hydrogen production. Besides, Ruminiclostridium and Bacillus were significantly promoted in lipopeptide-assisted bioreactors, representing efficient lignocellulose-degrading and hydrogen-producing genera. Conclusively, this study offers valuable insights into the underlying mechanism through which lipopeptide biosurfactants actively participate in biohydrogen production and illuminates the variations occurring within microbial communities.
