Low-temperature fermentations may have limitations for use with grape musts high in sugar content, depending on the level of available nitrogen. Compares five musts and their chemical properties. Includes tables and graphs.

Low temperature fermentations can increase the quality of wine produced from some aromatic grape varieties. However, these fermentations in musts with a high sugar content may have limitations. The fermentation kinetics and the composition of the resulting wines of 5 different musts have been compared. Maximum fermentation rates correlated well with the available nitrogen. The correlation between the available nitrogen and fermentation rates improved if selected amino acids are corrected for the total sugar content. We propose this new nitrogen parameter as a way of predicting fermentation rates. Must fermentations at low temperatures yielded wines with lower levels of acetic acid, acetaldehyde and ethyl acetate, which can be considered to be positive. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: Our primary objective was to identify cognitive and behavioural profiles that affect adjustment, in order to make relevant recommendations about support and assistance for parents of autistic children., Method: One hundred and sixty French parents completed a battery of questionnaires and self-report measures developed or adapted to assess (1) the child and family situations; (2) perceived stress; (3) perceived social support; (4) perceived control; (5) coping strategies; and (6) quality of life., Results: The psychometric properties of the instruments we used proved to be adequate. Our results support the pre-existing data and our findings may prove to be of interest to clinicians. Our primary finding was that emotion-focused coping strategies seem to be less effective. Parents who employed emotion-focused strategies were more stressed and more disturbed in most parts of their life. They also experienced more guilt and reported more false beliefs about PDD., Conclusions: Our data underscore the need for psychoeducation programmes for parents, focused on handling stress and emotions, modifying false beliefs and solving the daily problems that arise from PDD. We propose a 5-axis intervention model for parents of children with PDD, based on cognitive-behavioural therapies and on a stress management programme.

Health-related quality of life (HRQOL) is a multidimensional construct, without general agreement on the number of domains and the content of each domain. In children with epilepsy, the HRQOL evaluation includes both nonspecific aspects, such as behavioral, psychological and cognitive difficulties and the impact of a chronic pediatric illness on the child and its family and specific aspects, such as the perception of the severity of the seizures and of the undesirable effects of the antiepileptic treatments, as well as the social impact of a negative attitude toward epilepsy. The present article presents a review of the methods proposed for the assessment of HRQOL in children with epilepsy. Most methods rely on parental reports; however, there is an increasing effort to develop tools taking the child's point of view into account. HRQOL tools have often been used in clinical trials and, especially, to evaluate the surgical treatments of epilepsy. For the clinician, HRQOL tools may be a preliminary approach to the patient's problems to be interpreted in relation to the patient's medical, psychological, cognitive, social and familial context. In France, few large-scale studies on HRQOL in children with epilepsy have been conducted. We present the preliminary results of a French study based on parental reports.

Various methods have recently been proposed to assess the physical, psychological or social dimensions of quality of life (QoL) in children with epilepsy (CwE) and their families. Some methods are based exclusively on parental report and others emphasize the importance of an interview with the patient himself. In children with epilepsy and severe cognitive deficit only parental report is possible in practice; however, some parental based methods to evaluate QoL in CwE have excluded children with cognitive deficit. The present pilot study explores which items are suitable for a parental-based QoL evaluation in CwE and special educational needs, and the most frequently reported parental concerns in this special population of children.

Antioxidant thio-conjugates were obtained from white grape pomace by a clean and efficient one pot extraction and depolymerization method using water and cysteamine hydrochloride. To evaluate the potential of grape pomaces of different origins as sources of proanthocyanidins and conjugates, we conducted varietal comparative studies of polyphenol content, antioxidant power, and procyanidin composition. Xarel.lo proved to be the richest source of polyphenols. The total conversion into the conjugates was as high as 8 g/kg of Xarel.lo grape pomace, with a 50-fold excess of cysteamine, and 3 g/kg, with a 5-fold excess of cysteamine. After purification by preparative cation exchange and reversed phase high-performance liquid chromatography, 17 g of 63% pure 4beta-(2-aminoethylthio)epicatechin (acetate salt) was obtained from 35 kg of moist pomace. The procedure described here will make the antioxidant thio-derivatives efficiently available directly from raw plant byproducts such as grape pomace.

Many byproducts and wastes generated by agroindustries contain polyphenols with potential application as food antioxidants and preventive agents against skin cancer and other diseases. The performance of polyphenolic fractions from Parellada grape (Vitis vinifera) pomace as antioxidants in different physicochemical environments was tested. Fractions containing oligomers with mean degree of polymerization between 3 and 4 and percentage galloylation ca. 30% were the most potent free radical scavengers and efficient antioxidants in an oil-in-water emulsion. A fraction including glycosylated flavonols was also efficient in the emulsion. All the fractions showed low aquatic toxicity and weak influence on proliferation of human melanoma cells.

A new family of antioxidants has been obtained from a residual fraction of polymeric polyphenols of grape origin. The integral exploitation of resources is important in any sustainable production scheme. Many byproducts and residues generated by the agroindustries contain polyphenols with potential application as preventative agents against cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Among these polyphenols oligomeric proanthocyanidins are particularly significant. The polymeric forms, considered of less interest because of their astringent properties, constitute the largest portion of the biologically active plant proanthocyanidins. The new compounds described here result from the breakdown of polymeric flavanols in the presence of cysteamine and bear an amino function, which facilitates their isolation from complex mixtures by cation-exchange gels or resins. In this way, valuable antioxidant molecules can be efficiently obtained from otherwise wasted polymers. The new molecules appear to be as effective as their underivatized counterparts (flavan-3-ols) as antioxidants.
