Abstract

To address ciprofloxacin's (CPF) persistent presence in water and potential ecological and health hazard, the challenge is to develop an effective method for its removal from wastewater. This work is aimed at optimizing the adsorptive removal of ciprofloxacin (CPF) utilizing a layered double hydroxide pine cone biochar composite (LDH/PCBC). Response surface methodology (RSM) is employed to design the experiments to obtain optimal experimental conditions for improved adsorption processes. The CPF removal efficiency of LDH/PCBC from aqueous solution is found to be 97.6% under the optimized conditions (pH = 7, adsorbent dose = 0.45 g L−1, initial CPF concentration = 52 mg L−1 and temperature = 303 K). The Freundlich isotherm confirms the best fit, and the Langmuir adsorption capacity of the LDH/PCBC is determined to be 476.2 mg g−1 at 303 K. The pseudo-second-order model fitted the best for adsorption kinetics, suggesting that the adsorption process is directed by chemisorption. The thermodynamic investigation confirmed the endothermic and spontaneous adsorption process (ΔH° = 56.9 kJ and ΔG° from −3.2 kJ at 278 K to −10.8 kJ at 318 K). The study reveals that LDH/PCBC can be reused effectively with insignificant loss of removal efficiency (∼6%). The cost of the development and large-scale application of LDH/PCBC for the removal of CPF is $988.75 per ton. The results indicate that the LDH/PCBC outperforms the reported adsorbents for sustainable removal of CPF from aqueous solutions. 22. Adsorptive removal of oxytetracycline using MnO2-engineered pine-cone biochar: thermodynamic and kinetic investigation and process optimization.

Abstract

Indiscriminate use of oxytetracycline is linked to the development of antibiotic-resistant genes, posing a serious threat to human health and ecosystem balance. This article reports the adsorptive elimination of oxytetracycline (OTC) from aqueous solution using a newly developed MnO2-modified pine-cone biochar (MnO2/PCBC). The MnO2/PCBC was characterized using X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, CHNS analyzer, inductively coupled plasma–optical emission spectroscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller N2 adsorption analyzer. Batch adsorption experiments, designed using the central composite design framework of response surface methodology, were conducted to investigate the influence of process variables on the adsorption of OTC onto MnO2/PCBC. The optimized conditions for achieving maximum removal (88.1%) were found to be at pH 8, MnO2/PCBC dose 0.44 g/L, initial OTC concentration 200 mg/L, and temperature 303 K. The adsorption process follows Langmuir (R2=0.95) and Freundlich (R2=0.95) isotherms and pseudo-second-order (R2=0.99) adsorption kinetics. The adsorption process was found to be endothermic (ΔH0 = 33.04 kJ/mol) and spontaneous in nature (ΔG0 from −1.33 kJ/mol at 283 K to −5.65 kJ/mol at 313 K). The synthesized MnO2/PCBC could be recycled and reused for OTC removal with a percentage removal of around 80% after fifth cycle. The results indicate an effective removal of oxytetracycline with only 0.44 g/L MnO2/PCBC with maximum adsorption capacity of 357.14 mg/g which demonstrates improved performance in comparison to many adsorbents reported in literature. Abstract

Contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) are a new class of pollutants that may pose environmental and human risks. Such contaminants are prevalent in the environment as they can't be easily eliminated completely by traditional processing of wastewater discharge due to their obstinate nature. Adsorption is one such technique that is efficient, straightforward, convenient, comparatively inexpensive and sustainable for removing CECs from water on a large scale. Many review articles have been published recently on biochar and its composites derived from several agricultural waste sources for the removal of organic contaminants from water by adsorption. However, a detailed mechanistic aspect of adsorption of CECs on various bio-based adsorbents is scarcely reported. Additionally, the regeneration and stability of bio-based adsorbents need specific consideration. The present work collates studies reported in the last couple of decades on bio-based adsorbents and their composites for CEC removal with the aim to provide insights into the mechanism of adsorption, regeneration and stability of bio-based adsorbents to enable researchers to design a bio-based adsorbent for sustainable removal of CECs from water. The advantages and disadvantages of bio-based adsorbents are also argued. In the end, some key recommendations are made to improve CEC removal from water using bio-based adsorbents.
