Reactions of 2,4,5-trimethyloxazole, 2,4,5-trimethylthiazole, 2-methylthiazole, and 2-ethyl-4,5-dimethylthiazole with different acid chlorides in the presence of different bases were explored. Arylvinyl esters of substituted benzoic acids containing substituted oxazoles or thiazoles were formed when aroyl chlorides were used. Degrees of aroylation were different with different bases. Reactions with alkyl acid chlorides were also explored. Most of these reactions occurred through cyclic ketene acetal intermediates.

A two-step synthesis of tetrahydro-2H-furochromenones from 2H-chromenes is reported. The reaction of a series of tert-butyl 2-diazoacetate derivatives with 2H-chromenes, catalyzed by Rh2(OAc)4, generated cyclopropane intermediates that rearranged to γ-lactones on treatment with Sn(OTf)2.

Push–pull alkenes can be quickly accessed by cyclic ketene-N,N′-acetal chemistry. A number of push–pull structures with a wide span of double bond lengths and twist angles were synthesized from the reactions of (1) N,N′-dimethyl cyclic ketene-N,N′-acetals with isocyanates, (2) the products from (1) with isocyanates, (3) 2-methylimidazoline and 2-methyl-1,4,5,6-tetrahydropyrimidine with diacid chlorides, (4) 2-methylimidazoline, and 1,2-dimethyl-1,4,5,6-tetrahydropyrimidine with benzoyl chlorides, and (5) 1,2-dimethylimidazoline and 1,2-dimethyl-1,4,5,6-tetrahydropyrimidine with aryl isocyanates. These reactions proceed under very mild conditions and give moderate to excellent yields. X-ray crystallographic analysis of eight pxush–pull alkenes indicates that the central double bond lengths and twists are sensitive to the ring sizes (5 or 6), ring structures (fused or non-fused), electron donating and withdrawing strengths of pushing and pulling portions, respectively, number of electron pushing or pulling groups and substituent steric effects.

2-Methyl-1,4,5,6-tetrahydropyrimidine reacted with two equivalents of aroyl chloride in tetrahydrofuran―triethylamine to give N,N'-diaroyl cyclic ketene N,N-acetals that are inert to excess aroyl chlorides. No carbon―carbon bond was formed in these reactions. Conversely, 1,2-dimethyl-1,4,5,6-tetrahydropyrimidine reacted with three equivalents of aroyl chloride under the same conditions to give N-aroyl N'-methyl β,β-dioxo cyclic ketene N,N'-acetals, with formation of two carbon―carbon bonds. Various reactions of cyclic amidines with aroyl chlorides were observed and are discussed in terms of the effects of the ring size and substituents on the reactivities of the cyclic ketene N,N'-acetals generated in situ.

Caroline Christie and Bobby Lloyd have regularly photographed the Lea Valley London Olympic site since 2003. In 2006, they were joined by Tim Edensor for a day of walking and exploring. This article has emerged from this event as well as reflections on the photographs featured here. The area is one of the few remaining informal spaces in London, and the variegated activities and experiences it offers are being replaced by the giant Olympic development. The authors particularly focus on forthcoming loss: of the sensual experience of space, of the numerous possibilities for often improvisatory spatial practices, of an immanent and playful engagement with materiality, of a nondesigned and alternative spatial aesthetics.
