1. Stable Matching with Contingent Priorities

Abstract

Using school choice as a motivating example, we introduce a stylized model of a many-to-one matching market where the clearinghouse aims to implement contingent priorities, i.e., priorities that depend on the current assignment, to prioritize students with siblings and match them together. We provide a series of guidelines and introduce two natural approaches to implement them: (i) absolute, whereby a prioritized student can displace any student without siblings assigned to the school, and (ii) partial, whereby prioritized students can only displace students that have a less favorable lottery than their priority provider. We study several properties of the corresponding mechanisms, including the existence of a stable assignment under contingent priorities, the complexity of deciding whether there exists one, and its incentive properties. Furthermore, we introduce a soft version of these priorities to guarantee existence, and we provide mathematical programming formulations to find such stable matching or certify that one does not exist. Finally, using data from the Chilean school choice system, we show that our framework can significantly increase the number of students assigned to their top preference and the number of siblings assigned together relative to current practice.

3. Five Parameters for Studying Leadership Styles in Orchestra Conductors

Abstract

This study aims to investigate leadership in orchestra conducting and interrogate educational principles to improve conducting pedagogy. Effective leadership implies a set of interpersonal, communicational, and emotional skills combined with a high level of expertise, which may enable the leader to not only achieve excellent outcomes but also create a positive and collaborative working climate and vision for the performance. This work demonstrates that there are strong implications between effective leadership and orchestra conducting. We examine how orchestra conductors are perceived to be effective leaders and deduce from general leadership theories the following five parameters: charisma, stage presence, nonverbal communication, relationships with musicians, and leadership style. Interviews with orchestra conductors and performers support these five parameters for effective orchestra conducting. We perform a detailed analysis of the profiles of two renowned orchestra leaders-- namely, Herbert von Karajan and Gustavo Dudamel-- to test the five parameters and distill educational implications for both scholars and practitioners. The results are presented and discussed, along with implications for the education of orchestra conductors.

9. Design and Implementation of an Heuristic-Enhanced Branch-and-Bound Solver for MILP

Abstract

We present a solver for Mixed Integer Programs (MIP) developed for the MIP competition 2022. Given the 10 minutes bound on the computational time established by the rules of the competition, our method focuses on finding a feasible solution and improves it through a Branch-and-Bound algorithm. Another rule of the competition allows the use of up to 8 threads. Each thread is given a different primal heuristic, which has been tuned by hyper-parameters, to find a feasible solution. In every thread, once a feasible solution is found, we stop and we use a Branch-and-Bound method, embedded with local search heuristics, to ameliorate the incumbent solution. The three variants of the Diving heuristic that we implemented manage to find a feasible solution for 10 instances of the training data set. These heuristics are the best performing among the heuristics that we implemented. Our Branch-and-Bound algorithm is effective on a small portion of the training data set, and it manages to find an incumbent feasible solution for an instance that we could not solve with the Diving heuristics. Overall, our combined methods, when implemented with extensive computational power, can solve 11 of the 19 problems of the training data set within the time limit. 10. Capacity Variation in the Many-to-one Stable Matching

Abstract

The many-to-one stable matching problem provides the fundamental abstraction of several real-world matching markets such as school choice and hospital-resident allocation. The agents on both sides are often referred to as residents and hospitals. The classical setup assumes that the agents rank the opposite side and that the capacities of the hospitals are fixed. It is known that increasing the capacity of a single hospital improves the residents' final allocation. On the other hand, reducing the capacity of a single hospital deteriorates the residents' allocation. In this work, we study the computational complexity of finding the optimal variation of hospitals' capacities that leads to the best outcome for the residents, subject to stability and a capacity variation constraint. First, we show that the decision problem of finding the optimal capacity expansion is NP-complete and the corresponding optimization problem is inapproximable within a certain factor. This result holds under strict and complete preferences, and even if we allocate extra capacities to disjoint sets of hospitals. Second, we obtain analogous computational complexity results for the problem of capacity reduction. Finally, we study the variants of these problems when the goal is to maximize the size of the final matching under incomplete preference lists.

Abstract

This paper reports on the first international competition on AI for the traveling salesman problem (TSP) at the International Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence 2021 (IJCAI-21). The TSP is one of the classical combinatorial optimization problems, with many variants inspired by real-world applications. This first competition asked the participants to develop algorithms to solve a time-dependent orienteering problem with stochastic weights and time windows (TD-OPSWTW). It focused on two types of learning approaches: surrogate-based optimization and deep reinforcement learning. In this paper, we describe the problem, the setup of the competition, the winning methods, and give an overview of the results. The winning methods described in this work have advanced the state-of-the-art in using AI for stochastic routing problems. Overall, by organizing this competition we have introduced routing problems as an interesting problem setting for AI researchers. 12. Capacity Planning in Stable Matching

Abstract

Motivated by the shortage of seats that the Chilean school choice system is facing, we introduce the problem of jointly increasing school capacities and finding a student-optimal assignment in the expanded market. Due to the theoretical and practical complexity of the problem, we provide a comprehensive set of tools to solve the problem, including different mathematical programming formulations, a cutting plane algorithm, and two heuristics that allow obtaining near-optimal solutions quickly. On the theoretical side, we show the correctness of our formulations, different properties of the objective and feasible region that facilitate computation, and also several properties of the underlying mechanism to find a student-optimal matching under capacity expansions. On the computational side, we use data from the Chilean school choice system to demonstrate the impact of our framework and derive insights that could help alleviate the problem. Our results show that each additional seat can benefit multiple students and that we can effectively target the assignment of previously unassigned students or improve the assignment of several students through improvement chains. Nevertheless, our results show that the marginal effect of each additional seat is decreasing and that simply adding seats is insufficient to ensure every student gets assigned to some school. Finally, we discuss several extensions of our framework, showcasing its flexibility to accommodate different needs.

13. Tensile behavior of stainless steel 304L to Ni-20Cr functionally graded material: experimental characterization and computational simulations

Abstract

This study presents experimental and computational analyses of the phase composition and mechanical behavior of a functionally graded material (FGM) grading from 100 vol% 304L stainless steel (SS304L) to 100 vol% Ni-20Cr (NiCr) in 10 vol% increments. The mechanical behavior of the FGM was evaluated by extracting tensile specimens from SS304L-rich and NiCr-rich regions of the FGM, with the former behaving in a ductile manner and the latter being relatively brittle. The brittle response of the NiCr-rich sample was explained by the presence of the eutectic FCC+BCC phase in this sample, as identified by Scheil-Gulliver simulations along with experimental phase and composition analyses. The spatially varying yield and flow behavior of the FGM was determined through comparison of finite element analysis simulations with experimentally measured stress-strain curves and surface strain contours. The results highlight that the overall ductile behavior of SS304L and brittle behavior of NiCr are preserved in the SS304L/NiCr FGM but the formation of the brittle eutectic phase further reduced the ductility within the regions where it formed (90 vol% NiCr/10 vol% SS304L)., Comment: 39 pages, 13 figures, 3 tables

Abstract

Additive manufacturing (AM), through directed energy deposition, supports planned composition changes between locations within a single component, allowing for functionally graded materials (FGMs) to be developed and fabricated. The formation of deleterious phases along a particular composition path can cause significant cracking during the AM build process that makes the composition path unviable to produce these FGMs, but it is challenging to predict which phases will be present in as-built additively manufactured parts by analyzing only equilibrium phase relations. Solute segregation during solidification can lead to the formation of non-equilibrium phases that are stable at compositions far from the nominal composition of the melt, leading to crack formation. In this work, we developed a Scheil-Gulliver simulation tool based on pycalphad. We used this tool to compare the non-equilibrium phases predicted to form during solidification using the Scheil-Gulliver model with experimentally measured phases at several locations with different composition in a Ti-6Al-4V to Invar-36 FGM and a commercially pure Ti to Invar-36 FGM. We showed that the phases predicted to form by the Scheil-Gulliver model outperform the predictions made by assuming equilibrium solidification. Further, we demonstrated the use of our Scheil-Gulliver simulation tool as a method of screening potential FGM pathways by calculating the solidification phase fractions along the experimental gradient path in composition space., Comment: 32 pages, 4 figures, 7 tables

25. Interlimb Coordination: An Important Facet of Gross-Motor Ability

Abstract

Motor development attains landmark significance during early childhood. Although early childhood educators may be familiar with the gross-motor skill category, the subcategory of interlimb coordination needs greater attention than it typically receives from teachers of young children. Interlimb coordination primarily involves movements requiring sequential and simultaneous use of both sides of the body with a high degree of "rhythmicity." This article provides a brief overview of the literature on interlimb coordination and describes the development of interlimb coordination in young children. It also provides examples of potential test items and activities that early childhood educators can use to help identify children with coordination problems and to help design a movement program for all children that addresses the development of interlimb coordination. Abstract

Bayesian Networks (BN) provide robust probabilistic methods of reasoning under uncertainty, but despite their formal grounds are strictly based on the notion of conditional dependence, not much attention has been paid so far to their use in dependability analysis. The aim of this paper is to propose BN as a suitable tool for dependability analysis, by challenging the formalism with basic issues arising in dependability tasks. We will discuss how both modeling and analysis issues can be naturally dealt with by BN. Moreover, we will show how some limitations intrinsic to combinatorial dependability methods such as Fault Trees can be overcome using BN. 27. Parametric Dependability Analysis through Probabilistic Horn Abduction

Abstract

Dependability modeling and evaluation is aimed at investigating that a system performs its function correctly in time. A usual way to achieve a high reliability, is to design redundant systems that contain several replicas of the same subsystem or component. State space methods for dependability analysis may suffer of the state space explosion problem in such a kind of situation. Combinatorial models, on the other hand, require the simplified assumption of statistical independence; however, in case of redundant systems, this does not guarantee a reduced number of modeled elements. In order to provide a more compact system representation, parametric system modeling has been investigated in the literature, in such a way that a set of replicas of a given subsystem is parameterized so that only one representative instance is explicitly included. While modeling aspects can be suitably addressed by these approaches, analytical tools working on parametric characterizations are often more difficult to be defined and the standard approach is to 'unfold' the parametric model, in order to exploit standard analysis algorithms working at the unfolded 'ground' level. Moreover, parameterized combinatorial methods still require the statistical independence assumption. In the present paper we consider the formalism of Parametric Fault Tree (PFT) and we show how it can be related to Probabilistic Horn Abduction (PHA). Since PHA is a framework where both modeling and analysis can be performed in a restricted first-order language, we aim at showing that converting a PFT into a PHA knowledge base will allow an approach to dependability analysis directly exploiting parametric representation. We will show that classical qualitative and quantitative dependability measures can be characterized within PHA. Furthermore, additional modeling aspects (such as noisy gates and local dependencies) as well as additional reliability measures (such as posterior probability analysis) can be naturally addressed by this conversion. Abstract

Myocarditis is an inflammatory disease of the myocardium characterized by a great heterogeneity of presentation and evolution. Treatment of myocarditis is often supportive, and the evidence for immunosuppression is scarce and debated. Conventional treatment is based on clinical presentation, ranging from conservative to advanced mechanical assist devices. In this setting, immunosuppression and immunomodulation therapies are mostly reserved for patients presenting with major clinical syndromes. In this review, we will summarize the current evidence and strategies for conventional and immunosuppressive treatments for patients presenting with acute myocarditis.

42. Examining Age-Related Movement Representations for Sequential (Fine-Motor) Finger Movements

Abstract

Theory suggests that imagined and executed movement planning relies on internal models for action. Using a chronometry paradigm to compare the movement duration of imagined and executed movements, we tested children aged 7-11 years and adults on their ability to perform sequential finger movements. Underscoring this tactic was our desire to gain a better understanding of the age-related ability to create internal models for action requiring fine-motor movements. The task required number recognition and ordering and was presented in three levels of complexity. Results for movement duration indicated that 7-year-olds and adults were different from the other groups with no statistical distinction between 9- and 11-year-olds. Correlation analysis indicated a significant relationship between imagined and executed actions. These results are the first to document the increasing convergence between imagined and executed movements in the context of fine-motor behavior; a finding that adds to our understanding of action representation in children. Abstract

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is frequent in patients with heart failure and reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) with 2 different phenotypes: isolated postcapillary PH (IpcPH) and, with the worst prognosis, combined pre- and postcapillary PH (CpcPH). The aims of the present echocardiography study were to investigate (1) the ability to identify PH phenotype in patients with HFrEF using the newly adopted definition of PH (mean pulmonary artery pressure >20 mm Hg) and (2) the relationship between PH phenotype and right ventricular (RV) function.
