Abstract The effect of seafloor cold seeps on the biogeochemical cycling of mercury (Hg) remains enigmatic. Here we demonstrate substantial enrichments of mercury and methylmercury, along with the presence of microbes capable of metabolizing mercury in sediments of the Haima cold seep, South China Sea, by analyzing mercury and methylmercury concentrations, mercury isotopic composition analyses and metagenomic analyses of sediment cores. Compared to the reference area, the sediments in the upper sediment column of the active-seep area were 2.4 times enriched in Hg and 10.5 times in methylmercury. The slope of the capital delta ratio of mercury 199 to mercury 201 (Δ199Hg/Δ201Hg) with 1.23 ± 0.10 in the active-seep area indicate the occurrence of dark redox reactions. Genes related to mercury methylation (hgcA), demethylation (merB) and reduction (merA) were phylogenetically associated with several bacterial and archaeal linages. We roughly estimated an additional 2,835 Mg mercury and 9 Mg methylmercury are stored in cold seep globally. In summary, we propose that cold seeps globally function as a previously unrecognized sink for mercury and source for methylmercury in the deep ocean.

Ceramic sherds from approximately 20 samples of lead-glazed tableware, recovered from diverse archaeological sites, including three repurposed storage pits transformed into dumpsters within the medieval city of Santarém (13th–14th century), underwent a meticulous examination. This investigation utilised techniques such as micro-Raman, ground-state diffuse reflectance absorption, and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopies, in addition to X-ray diffraction and stereomicroscopy. A parallel study was conducted on contemporaneous European ceramics (glazed sherds) sourced from archaeological sites dating back to the 13th–15th centuries in Saintonge (France), Ardenne, Zomergem, and Bruges (Belgium), as well as Surrey–Hampshire, Kingston, and Cheam (England). The first premise for comparing the Santarem samples with European production locations was their frequent commercial relations with Portugal and the frequency of these productions being found in Portugal. The colour of the ceramic bodies is predominantly white or whitish, with a few exhibiting a vivid red hue. Analyses of the fabric, mineralogical, and elemental composition of the sherds suggest that the majority of Santarém’s glazed ceramics were locally or regionally produced, potentially derived from a Pliocene kaolin-rich sand formation. However, this conclusion is not supported by the absence of discovered lead glaze kilns or workshops in Santarém for the late Middle Ages.

Resumen Objetivos: Analizar el impacto de la pandemia de COVID-19 en el diagnóstico y la atención hospitalaria de los pacientes con tuberculosis. Métodos: Estudio retrospectivo en un hospital portugués de 804 camas entre marzo de 2019 y marzo de 2021. Comparamos el número de nuevos diagnósticos de tuberculosis activa en pacientes hospitalizados en el período de 12 meses antes y después el repunte de la COVID-19 en Portugal (marzo 2020), así como las características clínicas de los pacientes. Resultados: Se incluyeron 24675 ingresos hospitalarios, de los cuales 158 fueron por tuberculosis activa de nuevo. Se observaron 60 nuevos diagnósticos de tuberculosis activa en el primer año de la pandemia COVID-19 (grupo B), frente a los 98 del año anterior (grupo A) (p=0,004). La distribución por género, edad, presentación y órganos afectados fueron similares. Durante la pandemia de COVID-19, hubo una mediana de retraso significativo de 3 días en el diagnóstico después del ingreso hospitalario (p=0,047) y un total del 18 % de los casos de tuberculosis se infectaron con SARS-CoV-2 en el primer mes de terapia antituberculosa. Conclusión: Durante el primer año de la pandemia COVID-19, los pacientes hospitalizados tuvieron 37% menos probabilidad de tener un nuevo diagnóstico de TB. Nuestro estudio destaca la preocupación por el infradiagnóstico y el retraso en el diagnóstico de la TB activa durante la pandemia COVID-19 y la necesidad de estudios y políticas que aborden este tema. Abstract Objectives: The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the global fight against Tuberculosis, although its impact is not fully known. We aimed to analyse the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the diagnosis and hospital care of tuberculosis patients. Material and Method: We conducted a retrospective study in a Portuguese 804-bed hospital between March 2019 and March 2021. We compared the number of new diagnoses of active Tuberculosis in hospitalized patients in the 12-month period before (group A) and after (group B) the surge of COVID-19 in Portugal (March 2020), as well as patients’ clinical characteristics. Results: There were a total of 24675 hospital admissions, of which 158 were due to new active tuberculosis. There were 60 new diagnoses of active tuberculosis in the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic (group B), compared to 98 in the previous year (group A) (0.5% vs. 0.8%, respectively, p=0.004). Gender distribution, age, symptoms at presentation and affected organs were similar in both groups. During the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a significant median 3-day delay in diagnosis after hospital admission (p=0.047) and a total of 18% of tuberculosis cases were co-infected with SARS-CoV-2 in the first month of antituberculosis therapy. Conclusion: During the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, hospitalised patients were 37% less likely to have a diagnosis of new active TB, compared to the previous year. Our study highlights the concern about underdiagnosis and diagnostic delay of active TB during the COVID-19 pandemic and the need for studies and policies addressing this matter.

This paper examines the integration of Human-in-the-Loop Cyber-Physical Systems (HiTL-CPS) and Unobtrusive Sensing through a case study named iFriend. Our approach enhances the data acquisition phase of HiTLCPS by integrating unobtrusive sensing techniques to monitor real-time heart rate and breathing rate. This is achieved by leveraging Channel State Information (CSI) of Wi-Fi signals, specifically focusing on its amplitude information. This integration facilitates seamless interaction between humans and the cyber-physical environment. We detail the architecture of the iFriend system, comprising sensors, actuators, and computational units forming a closed-loop control mechanism. The unobtrusive sensing module is specifically designed to capture physiological changes without causing discomfort or interfering with daily activities, making it well-suited for healthcare applications and human-machine interaction. We assess iFriend in an experimental setting, demonstrating its feasibility, with between 80% and 90% of estimates hovering around 2.5 breaths per minute for BR or 10 beats per minute for HR, respectively.

Abstract Hydropeaking, which refers to rising or falling discharges caused by the turning on or off of hydro-turbines to generate electricity, is a topic of growing interest due to its impact on fluvial ecosystems. To date, most hydropeaking studies have focused on the impact of peak fluctuations on invertebrate and fish communities, but little attention has been paid to its impact on riverine plants and how functional traits may make them resistant to hydropeaking. We performed a review to assess how a set of 32 plant functional traits can be expressed in riverine plant species, and found evidence of how such expression affects their capacity to cope with common sources of hydropeaking disturbance (i.e., inundation, fast water drawdown, and rapid water fluctuations linked to up-ramping and down-ramping hydropeaking operations). The information here presented can simplify the evaluation of impacts on riverine plant communities worldwide, as well as to detect suitable species to successfully restore rivers affected by hydropower production.

This study aims to explore the phenomena experienced by Lecturers and Students of the Indonesian Language Education Study Program in online learning during the Covid-19 period. The research method is qualitative with a phenomenological approach. Data collection was done through semistructured interviews with five lecturers and eight students. Interview data was then analyzed within-case and cross-case. Researchers identified two problems related to what lecturers and students experienced in online learning: (1) barriers to using online learning media and (2) obstacles in presenting material and using learning methods. The results showed the lecturers' attitude in carrying out online learning was good by creating a fun online learning atmosphere. Unfortunately, the material provided was not understood by students. They complained about the material and its delivery by the lecturers. It was because the lecturers only provided material and assignments through e-learning. In addition, they only used discussion forums on e-learning to communicate. The researchers also identified that quota and internet network errors were the main problems encountered in online learning. This research can be used as material for evaluating the implementation of online academic activities, especially in language learning of the Indonesian Language Education Study Program. Data validity used member checks, triangulation, and peer debriefing.

The pequi (Caryocar brasiliense) fruit peel, despite being frequently discarded, has a high content of bioactive compounds, and therefore has a high nutritional value. The present study aimed to explore the bioactivities in the pequi peel, particularly their potential health benefits at the level of antioxidant activity. The exploitation of this fruit could also present significant economic benefits and applications of pequi by-products would represent a reduction in waste, having a positive impact on the environment. Phenolic compounds present in the pequi exocarp and external mesocarp were identified by paper spray mass spectrometry (PS-MS) and quantified by HPLC. The total phenolic content (TPC) along with the amount of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), Ferric Reducing Antioxidant Power (FRAP), and the amount of 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid (ABTS) were also determined in peel extracts. Epicatechin was the most abundant phenolic compound found, followed by the caffeic, salicylic, and gallic acids. In addition, fingerprinting revealed compounds related to several beneficial health effects. In short, the results obtained were encouraging for potential applications of pequi peel in the field of functional foods.

The baru (Dipteryx alata Vog.), a fruit native to the Cerrado biome, is well-known for its almonds, which are extensively exploited and exported. Unfortunately, the remaining parts of this fruit are often discarded. This study investigates the fixed chemical constituents of the baru, including the bark, pulp, endocarp, and almonds, using the PS–MS technique in positive and negative ionization modes. Notably, this research presents the first chemical profile of baru almonds in both their raw and roasted states. The analysis identified 57 compounds reported for the first time in a baru and 24 common compounds. The majority of these compounds are classified as flavonoids. In both ionization modes, the peel exhibited a higher proportion of phenolic compounds, although the chemical compounds varied among the peel, pulp, almond, and endocarp. These findings highlight the perspective of bioeconomy and biotechnology. By staggering baru fruit production alongside extractivists, we can optimize the utilization of all parts of the fruit. Furthermore, given the knowledge of the biological properties of flavonoids and the baru composition, we recommend additional studies to analyze their potential in preventing chronic non-communicable diseases.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is comprised of histopathological alterations such as pulmonary emphysema and peribronchial fibrosis. Matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9) is one of the key enzymes involved in both types of tissue remodeling during the development of lung damage. In recent studies, it was demonstrated that deflamin, a protein component extracted from Lupinus albus, markedly inhibits the catalytic activity of MMP-9 in experimental models of colon adenocarcinoma and ulcerative colitis. Therefore, in the present study, we investigated for the first time the biological effect of deflamin in a murine COPD model induced by chronic exposure to ozone. Ozone exposure was carried out in C57BL/6 mice twice a week for six weeks for 3 h each time, and the treated group was orally administered deflamin (20 mg/kg body weight) after each ozone exposure. The histological results showed that deflamin attenuated pulmonary emphysema and peribronchial fibrosis, as evidenced by H&E and Masson’s trichrome staining. Furthermore, deflamin administration significantly decreased MMP-9 activity, as assessed by fluorogenic substrate assay and gelatin zymography. Interestingly, bioinformatic analysis reveals a plausible interaction between deflamin and MMP-9. Collectively, our findings demonstrate the therapeutic potential of deflamin in a COPD murine model, and suggest that the attenuation of the development of lung tissue damage occurs by deflamin-regulated MMP-9 catalytic activity.

We investigated the reliability and construct validity of the Professionals' Perceptions about Collaborative Consultation in Early Childhood Intervention Scale (ProPerCECIS), a rating scale developed to measure collaborative consultation in early childhood intervention (ECI). ProPerCECIS was completed by 427 professionals from 78 ECI teams. The full sample was randomised into sample A, 170 participants, for conducting an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) -- and sample B, 257 participants, for performing confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). Multiple-group analysis, with the overall sample, was conducted. The EFA final solution comprised three correlated factors, with acceptable to very good internal consistency: Intervention, Context, and Planning. The CFA supported the three-factor structure. Results supported configural invariance and partial metric invariance, but partial scalar invariance did not hold. Results supported the conceptual framework of collaborative consultation in ECI and suggest that ProPerCECIS can be a useful measure of professionals' perceptions about collaborative consultation practices in ECI. ProPerCECIS seems to be particularly suited to assess collaborative practices within services providing routines-based family-centred interventions. Importantly, because the factor structure for ProPerCECIS holds up for different professional groups, it might be used by transdisciplinary ECI teams. ABSTRACT In the global context of seawater deoxygenation triggered by climate change and anthropogenic activities, changes in redox gradients impacting biogeochemical transformations of pollutants, such as mercury, become more likely. Being the largest anoxic basin worldwide, with high concentrations of the potent neurotoxic methylmercury (MeHg), the Black Sea is an ideal natural laboratory to provide new insights about the link between dissolved oxygen concentration and hgcAB gene-carrying (hgc+) microorganisms involved in the formation of MeHg. We combined geochemical and microbial approaches to assess the effect of vertical redox gradients on abundance, diversity, and metabolic potential of hgc+ microorganisms in the Black Sea water column. The abundance of hgcA genes [congruently estimated by quantitative PCR (qPCR) and metagenomics] correlated with MeHg concentration, both maximal in the upper part of the anoxic water. Besides the predominant Desulfobacterales, hgc+ microorganisms belonged to a unique assemblage of diverse—previously underappreciated—anaerobic fermenters from Anaerolineales, Phycisphaerae (characteristic of the anoxic and sulfidic zone), Kiritimatiellales, and Bacteroidales (characteristic of the suboxic zone). The metabolic versatility of Desulfobacterota differed from strict sulfate reduction in the anoxic water to reduction of various electron acceptors in the suboxic water. Linking microbial activity and contaminant concentration in environmental studies is rare due to the complexity of biological pathways. In this study, we disentangle the role of oxygen in shaping the distribution of Hg-methylating microorganisms consistently with MeHg concentration, and we highlight their taxonomic and metabolic niche partitioning across redox gradients, improving the prediction of the response of marine communities to the expansion of oxygen-deficient zones. IMPORTANCE Methylmercury (MeHg) is a neurotoxin detected at high concentrations in certain marine ecosystems, posing a threat to human health. MeHg production is mainly mediated by hgcAB gene-carrying (hgc+) microorganisms. Oxygen is one of the main factors controlling Hg methylation; however, its effect on the diversity and ecology of hgc+ microorganisms remains unknown. Under the current context of seawater deoxygenation, mercury cycling is expected to be disturbed. Here, we show the strong effect of oxygen gradients on the distribution of potential Hg methylators. In addition, we show for the first time the significant contribution of a unique assemblage of potential fermenters from Anaerolineales, Phycisphaerae, and Kiritimatiellales to Hg methylation, stratified in different redox niches along the Black Sea gradient. Our results considerably expand the known taxonomic diversity and ecological niches prone to the formation of MeHg and contribute to better apprehend the consequences of oxygen depletion in seawater.

In recent years, considerable advances in connecting industrial equipment to the Internet allowed a higher level of operational efficiency, productivity, and automation. Nevertheless, the construction industry still presents challenging requirements, like long-distance wireless communication, interconnection of out-of- coverage areas, constant mobility of machinery, and support for legacy and proprietary systems. All these requirements pose different challenges when compared with traditional smart factory Industry 4.0 solutions. This paper discusses some of the current key questions regarding fleet management in the construction industry, identifies requirements for heavy-duty machinery, and proposes an Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT)-based solution for the integrated monitoring of such machinery. Also, it proposes and presents an open, innovative solution for the integrated management of non-standardized civil construction vehicle technologies. The developed prototype uses the J1939 protous and protocol to collect machinery status and Long-Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) to communicate the monitored data. The solution was assessed at the construction site of the new port of Sines in Portugal. A detailed description of the proposed system is provided, along with information on trials and evaluation results regarding its performance. Additionally, the paper provides insights into open issues and challenges in this field and how our solution can contribute to overcoming them.

Abstract Understanding the factors and processes that shape intra-specific sensitivity to heat stress is fundamental to better predicting the vulnerability of benthic species to climate change. Here, we investigate the response of a habitat-forming Mediterranean octocoral, the red gorgonian Paramuricea clavata (Risso, 1826) to thermal stress at multiple biological and geographical scales. Samples from eleven P. clavata populations inhabiting four localities separated by hundreds to more than 1500 km of coast and with contrasting thermal histories were exposed to a critical temperature threshold (25 °C) in a common garden experiment in aquaria. Ten of the 11 populations lacked thermotolerance to the experimental conditions provided (25 days at 25 °C), with 100% or almost 100% colony mortality by the end of the experiment. Furthermore, we found no significant association between local average thermal regimes nor recent thermal history (i.e., local water temperatures in the 3 months prior to the experiment) and population thermotolerance. Overall, our results suggest that local adaptation and/or acclimation to warmer conditions have a limited role in the response of P. clavata to thermal stress. The study also confirms the sensitivity of this species to warm temperatures across its distributional range and questions its adaptive capacity under ocean warming conditions. However, important inter-individual variation in thermotolerance was found within populations, particularly those exposed to the most severe prior marine heatwaves. These observations suggest that P. clavata could harbor adaptive potential to future warming acting on standing genetic variation (i.e., divergent selection) and/or environmentally-induced phenotypic variation (i.e., intra- and/or intergenerational plasticity).

The Gray’s sea fan, Paramuricea grayi (Johnson, 1861), typically inhabits deep littoral and circalittoral habitats of the eastern temperate and tropical Atlantic Ocean. Along the Iberian Peninsula, where P. grayi is a dominant constituent of circalittoral coral gardens, two segregating lineages (yellow and purple morphotypes) were recently identified using single-copy nuclear orthologues. The mitochondrial genomes of 9 P. grayi individuals covering both color morphotypes were assembled from RNA-seq data, using samples collected at three sites in southern (Sagres and Tavira) and western (Cape Espichel) Portugal. The complete circular mitogenome is 18,668 bp in length, has an A + T-rich base composition (62.5%) and contains the 17 genes typically found in Octocorallia: 14 protein-coding genes (atp6, atp8, cob, cox1-3, mt-mutS, nad1-6, and nad4L), the small and large subunit rRNAs (rns and rnl), and one transfer RNA (trnM). The mitogenomes were nearly identical for all specimens, though we identified a noteworthy polymorphism (two SNPs 9 bp apart) in the mt-mutS of one purple individual that is shared with the sister species P. clavata. The mitogenomes of the two species have a pairwise sequence identity of 99.0%, with nad6 and mt-mutS having the highest rates of non-synonymous substitutions.

Arctic warming thaws permafrost, leading to enhanced soil mercury transport to the Arctic Ocean. Mercury isotope signatures in arctic rivers, ocean and atmosphere suggest that permafrost mercury is buried in marine sediment and not emitted to the global atmosphere

Key Clinical Message The occurrence of simultaneous multifocal papillary thyroid carcinoma and mixed medullary‐papillary carcinoma, as far as we know, has not been previously described. We suggest the surgical approach to be driven by the medullary component. Abstract Patient underwent total thyroidectomy with central compartment lymph node dissection. Histological examination revealed a simultaneous multifocal papillary thyroid carcinoma and mixed medullary‐papillary carcinoma. He was disease‐free at 1‐year‐follow‐up.

Hydropeaking, which refers to large and rapid flow fluctuations caused by the turning on or off of hydro-turbines to generate electricity, is a topic of growing interest due to its impact on fluvial ecosystems. To date, most hydropeaking studies have focused on the impact of this hydropower operation mode on invertebrate and fish communities, but little attention has been paid to its impact on riverine communities and how functional traits may make plants resistant to hydropeaking. We determined how a set of 32 plant functional traits are expressed in 14 riverine species, and how such expression affects their capacity to cope with common sources of hydropeaking disturbance (i.e., inundation, water stress, and rapid water fluctuations linked to up-ramping and down-ramping hydropeaking operations). We categorized species as “resistant”, “partially-resistant” or “vulnerable” based on the capacity of each trait to confer resistance to hydropeaking disturbances. Two indexes (i.e., “hydropeaking plant species resistance index” (HPPR) and “hydropeaking plant community resistance” index (HPCR)) were developed to rank our species based on their tolerance to hydropeaking and to determine which were the commonest “hydropeaking-resistant” traits within the plant community. Our results evidenced that coincidences in trait expression are common between species with similar growth forms. Grasses were the most resistant to inundation and water fluctuations, whereas trees and shrubs were so to water stress. In general, forbs were rather vulnerable to all the hydropeaking disturbances. The differences observed between the resistance expected and the obtained for several plant species illustrate the importance of our approach to fine-tune the diagnostics on plant species vulnerability to hydropeaking.. We believe this initiative will help river managers to detect suitable species to restore rivers affected by hydropower production.

Hydropower can have significant impacts on riverine ecosystems due to hydropeaking (i.e., artificial rapid and short-term fluctuations in water flow and water levels downstream and upstream of hydropower stations) that negatively affect downstream fish. However, when it comes to analyzing species habitat use and availability above and below small hydropower plants (SHPPs), studies conducted at the microhabitat scale are scarcer, particularly in Mediterranean rivers. The goal of this study is to assess the seasonal (early and late summer) and size-related (juveniles and adults) microhabitat use by native fish above and below SHPPs. Fish were sampled by a modified point electrofishing procedure, and a multivariate approach was used to analyze microhabitat use and availability data from sites located upstream (reference) and downstream (disturbed) from two SHPPs in northeast Portugal. Cover and water depth were the most influential variables in the use of microhabitat for all species at both the reference and disturbed sites, although some differences in the variable rankings were found. Leuciscids exhibited similar patterns of non-random (i.e., selective) microhabitat use between the reference and the disturbed sites. Overall, the seasonal and size-related patterns in species microhabitat use were similar, with the majority of species displaying seasonal patterns in microhabitat use from early summer to late summer. This study showed that differences in fish microhabitat use between downstream SHPP and upstream reference sites were negligible. Cover might have had a significant role in tempering the effects of detrimental environmental conditions, namely, peaking flows, by providing hydraulic shelter, highlighting the need to maintain riparian vegetation strips and mosaics of submerged aquatic macrophytes, as well as the provision of coarse substrata that can be critical for fish. Future studies are needed to better clarify how different size classes of fish select microhabitats when facing past and present hydropeaking conditions.

In the ever-evolving construction industry, the incorporation of the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) through Low-power Wireless Area Networks (LPWAN), such as LoRaWAN, has emerged as a practical solution for addressing the challenges posed by the limited 5G cellular coverage found in solutions like NB-IoT and LTE-M, especially when deployed in remote locations. Open-source LPWAN platforms like The Things Network (TTN) and ChirpStack have played a pivotal role in fostering the adoption of LoRa technology by providing a mature and cost-effective ecosystem that facilitates efficient device resource management. Within this context, maintaining continuous surveillance of LPWAN network gateways becomes critically important, requiring a meticulous examination of status indicators and an evaluation of the communication quality. This paper introduces a structured approach for extracting data from TTN to create a comprehensive gateway monitoring system. The methodology encompasses various aspects, including ensuring seamless server connectivity, specifically focusing on efficient information management and integration of real-world construction data. This foundational work sets the stage for a more in-depth exploration of the diverse management components within the network ecosystem.

Abstract Background Axillary lymph node (LN) metastasis is one of the most important predictors of recurrence and survival in breast cancer, and accurate assessment of LN involvement is crucial. Determining extent of residual disease is key for surgical planning after neoadjuvant therapy. The aim of the study was to evaluate the diagnostic reliability of MRI for nodal disease in locally advanced breast cancer patients treated with neoadjuvant endocrine therapy (NET). Methods Thirty-three clinically node-positive locally advanced breast cancer patients who underwent NET and surgery were prospectively enrolled. Two radiologists reviewed the axillary nodes at 3 separate time points MRI examinations at baseline (before the first treatment regimen), interim (following at least 2 months after the first cycle and prior to crossing-over), and preoperative (after the final administration of therapy and immediately before surgery). According to LN status after surgery, imaging features and diagnostic performance were analyzed. Results All 33 patients had a target LN reduction, the greatest treatment benefit from week 8 to week 16. There was a positive correlation between the maximal diameter of the most suspicious LN measured by MRI and pathology during and after NET, being highest at therapy completion (r = 0.6, P ≤ .001). Mean and median differences of maximal diameter of the most suspicious LN were higher with MRI than with pathology. Seven of 33 patients demonstrated normal posttreatment MRI nodal status (yrN0). Of these 7 yrN0, 3 exhibited no metastasis on final pathology (ypN0), 2 ypN1 and 2 ypN2. Reciprocally, MRI diagnosed 3 cases of ypN0 as yrN + . Diffusion -weighted imaging (DWI) was the only axillary node characteristic significant when associated with pathological node status (χ2(4) = 8.118, P = .072). Conclusion Performance characteristics of MRI were not completely sufficient to preclude surgical axillary staging. To our knowledge, this is the first study on MRI LN assessment following NET in locally advanced breast cancer, and further studies with larger sample sizes are required to consolidate the results of this preliminary study. Trial Registration Institutional Review Board approval was obtained (this current manuscript is from a prospective, open-label, randomized single-center cohort substudy of the NEOLETEXE trial). NEOLETEXE, a phase 2 clinical trial, was registered on March 23rd, 2015 in the National trial database of Norway and approved by the Regional Ethical Committee of the South-Eastern Health Region in Norway; registration number: REK-SØ-84–2015 .

The global population is aging, with the percentage of people over 60 expected to rise from 12% to 22% and 33% residing in developed countries. However, most cities lack the appropriate infrastructure to support aging citizens in active aging and traversing the urban landscape, negatively impacting their quality of life. Studies have shown that public parks and green spaces can contribute to a higher quality of life and wellbeing. Also, smart cities are intended to improve the wellbeing and health of their inhabitants. However, most solutions are typically implemented indoors and tend to overlook the needs of older adults. A smart city should consider the increasing rate of aging and give more importance to outdoor environments as a key aspect of quality of life. The article’s main purpose is to provide a comprehensive background to understand the current knowledge on smart public parks and highlight the significance of new research in the field to promote active aging. The article is expected to inspire new research ideas by identifying gaps in knowledge. Open and challenging issues in emerging smart park solutions are proposed for further work.
