Routine sampling of pregnant women at first antenatal care (ANC) visits could make Plasmodium falciparum genomic surveillance more cost-efficient and convenient in sub-Saharan Africa. We compare the genetic structure of parasite populations sampled from 289 first ANC users and 93 children from the community in Mozambique between 2015 and 2019. Samples are amplicon sequenced targeting 165 microhaplotypes and 15 drug resistance genes. Metrics of genetic diversity and relatedness, as well as the prevalence of drug resistance markers, are consistent between the two populations. In an area targeted for elimination, intra-host genetic diversity declines in both populations (p = 0.002-0.007), while for the ANC population, population genetic diversity is also lower (p = 0.0004), and genetic relatedness between infections is higher (p = 0.002) than control areas, indicating a recent reduction in the parasite population size. These results highlight the added value of genomic surveillance at ANC clinics to inform about changes in transmission beyond epidemiological data.

5. Evolutionary Tabletop Game Design: A Case Study in the Risk Game

Creating and evaluating games manually is an arduous and laborious task. Procedural content generation can aid by creating game artifacts, but usually not an entire game. Evolutionary game design, which combines evolutionary algorithms with automated playtesting, has been used to create novel board games with simple equipment; however, the original approach does not include complex tabletop games with dice, cards, and maps. This work proposes an extension of the approach for tabletop games, evaluating the process by generating variants of Risk, a military strategy game where players must conquer map territories to win. We achieved this using a genetic algorithm to evolve the chosen parameters, as well as a rules-based agent to test the games and a variety of quality criteria to evaluate the new variations generated. Our results show the creation of new variations of the original game with smaller maps, resulting in shorter matches. Also, the variants produce more balanced matches, maintaining the usual drama. We also identified limitations in the process, where, in many cases, where the objective function was correctly pursued, but the generated games were nearly trivial. Abstract Long COVID is characterized by persistent that extends symptoms beyond established timeframes. Its varied presentation across different populations and healthcare systems poses significant challenges in understanding its clinical manifestations and implications. In this study, we present a novel application of text mining technique to automatically extract unstructured data from a long COVID survey conducted at a prominent university hospital in São Paulo, Brazil. Our phonetic text clustering (PTC) method enables the exploration of unstructured Electronic Healthcare Records (EHR) data to unify different written forms of similar terms into a single phonemic representation. We used n-gram text analysis to detect compound words and negated terms in Portuguese-BR, focusing on medical conditions and symptoms related to long COVID. By leveraging text mining, we aim to contribute to a deeper understanding of this chronic condition and its implications for healthcare systems globally. The model developed in this study has the potential for scalability and applicability in other healthcare settings, thereby supporting broader research efforts and informing clinical decision-making for long COVID patients.

8. Improved Flexible Coaxial Ribbon Cable for High-Density Superconducting Arrays

Superconducting arrays often require specialized, high-density cryogenic cabling capable of transporting electrical signals across temperature stages with minimal loss, crosstalk, and thermal conductivity. We report improvements to the design and fabrication of previously published superconducting 53 wt% Nb-47 wt% Ti (Nb47Ti) FLexible coAXial ribbon cables (FLAX). We used 3D electromagnetic simulations to inform design changes to improve the characteristic impedance of the cable and the connector transition. We increased the center conductor diameter from 0.003 inches to 0.005 inches which lowered the cable characteristic impedance from $\sim$60 $\Omega$ to $\sim$53 $\Omega$. This change had a negligible impact on the computed heat load which we estimate to be 5 nW per trace from 1 K to 100 mK with a 1-ft cable. This is approximately half the heat load calculated for the smallest commercially available superconducting coax. We also modified the transition board to include a capacitive coupling between the upper ground plane and signal traces that mitigates the inductive transition. We tested these changes in a 5-trace, 1-ft long cable at 4 K and found the microwave transmission improved from 6 dB to 1.5 dB of attenuation at 8 GHz. This loss is comparable to commercial superconducting coax and 3$\times$ lower than commercial NbTi-on-polyimide flex cables at 8 GHz. The nearest-neighbor forward crosstalk remained less than -40 dB at 8 GHz. We compare key performance metrics with commercially available superconducting coax and NbTi-on-polyimide flex cables and we share initial progress on commercialization of this technology by Maybell Quantum Industries.

O presente artigo apresenta a universidade enquanto um território contemporâneo e multifacetado, propício para a inserção dos coletivos indígenas como sujeitos acadêmicos. O objetivo é abordar de forma qualitativa o epistemicídio como uma das manifestações de racismo contra os povos originários presentes na educação superior e que impacta no caráter social universitário, reforçando seu papel eurocêntrico e menos plural – “monocromática”. Além da experiência dos autores com a temática, a revisão de literatura é o procedimento utilizado para se alcançar o objetivo pretendido. Brevemente, discute-se sobre a universidade pública brasileira no século XXI e seus desafios em face de grupos excluídos anteriormente do corpus acadêmico, realidade que vem mudando após a conhecida Lei de Cotas (Lei n. 12.711/2012), revista pelo congresso em 2023. O recorte deste artigo exclui as Licenciaturas Específicas e recai sobre os cursos de graduação regulares, bacharelados e demais licenciaturas, acessíveis via sistema de cotas. Verifica-se que atitudes de preconceito, discriminação e racismo, no seio universitário, perante os discentes indígenas, são práticas rotineiras, mas pouco se discute, o epistemicídio como sendo uma dessas atitudes, qual seja, a de desconsiderar as experiências, conhecimentos e contribuições culturais dos estudantes indígenas. O mesmo ocorre reiterada e sutilmente na vivência acadêmica em decorrência da organização curricular, da condução da pesquisa e extensão e da postura docente. Apresenta-se no artigo uma lista de indicativos para o enfrentamento ao epistemicídio e sua superação no território universitário brasileiro

“User generated” content is a new popular type of content that shows potential in communicating information to younger age groups in new, creative ways. This study aimed to assess the impact of a “user generated” video in communicating about marine environmental threats, specifically to one hundred and fifty-one young adults enrolled in two different schools: a private higher education school, and a public university, both in the Lisbon metropolitan area (Portugal). The video’s impacts in the cognitive and emotional fields were assessed by comparing them to the impacts of an outreach text similar in content and duration of exposure. A pre-test/post-test methodology was used to evaluate short-term impacts, and a follow-up test was applied to gauge medium-term impacts. Additionally, short focus group sessions further explored topics such as media consumption preferences and trends. The results suggest that “user generated” video has a similar impact to an outreach text in the cognitive field, and a bigger impact in the emotional field when it comes to promoting positive emotions and feelings. Therefore, when used to its full potential, this type of media can be a suitable way to communicate about science and environmental topics, particularly marine environmental threats, and a valuable tool to raise public awareness.

Resumo O objetivo deste texto é compreender a vulnerabilidade de gênero experienciada pelas mulheres que vivem com HIV/Síndrome de Imunodeficiência Adquirida (SIDA) na Cidade de Maputo, Moçambique, através dos relatos de representantes e lideranças dos serviços de saúde que atuam diretamente sobre as questões dessas condições para o público feminino. Para isso, a pesquisa se embasou em metodologias qualitativas, visto que a produção dos dados foi respaldada por um roteiro semiestruturado que considera os seguintes temas: HIV/SIDA; gênero; cultura; e serviços de saúde. As interpretações são mediadas pela Análise do Discurso (AD), que possibilita a imersão nos recursos linguísticos por meio dos sentidos e conexões. Isso permite a interpretação da complexidade do contexto geográfico das mulheres que vivem com HIV/SIDA na região, evidenciando a necessidade de se empenhar mais ações voltadas às questões das doenças, uma vez que se faz premente estabelecer uma interpretação geográfica da saúde, sobretudo, no que diz respeito à realidade vivida pelas que experienciam dificuldades, opressões, estigmas e discriminações no cotidiano.

Summary: Obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) present major global health challenges, with an increasing prevalence worldwide. Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) have emerged as a pivotal treatment option for both conditions, demonstrating efficacy in blood glucose management, weight reduction, cardiovascular disease prevention, and kidney health improvement. GLP-1, an incretin hormone, plays a crucial role in glucose metabolism and appetite regulation, influencing insulin secretion, insulin sensitivity, and gastric emptying. The therapeutic use of GLP-1RAs has evolved significantly, offering various formulations that provide different efficacy, routes of administration, and flexibility in dosing. These agents reduce HbA1c levels, facilitate weight loss, and exhibit cardiovascular protective effects, making them an integral component of T2DM and obesity management. This review will discuss the currently approved medication for T2DM and obesity, and will also highlight the advent of novel agents which are dual and triple hormonal agonists which represent the future direction of incretin-based therapy. In a novel historical context, as in the case of a revolution, the weight of history tends to be light on the generations that are there at the onset; they may be called “the inaugural generations”. On the other hand, it tends to be heavy on the generations that follow; let us call them “the after generations”. These two types of generations correspond to two different conceptions of the past, respectively: the past as a mission or a task, and the past as a treasure or a trophy. For the inaugural generations, the past is open and unfinished; for the after generations, it is closed and accomplished. The relative prevalence of these two types of generations determines the relative weight of history. History is as much about the past as it is about the present. The present is nothing more than the past in the process of presenting itself to us. Modern Eurocentric view of the world led to a global separation between two bodies of people: those who do not want to remember and those who cannot afford to forget. The latter are the people whose past and present was violently interrupted by Western domination. In consonance with the epistemologies of the South, this paper is written from the perspective of the people who cannot afford to forget.

Objectives: Chikungunya virus (CHIKV), a reemerging global public health concern, which causes acute febrile illness, rash, and arthralgia and may affect both mothers and infants during pregnancy. Mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of CHIKV in Africa remains understudied. Methods: Our cohort study screened 1006 pregnant women with a Zika/dengue/CHIKV rapid test at two clinics in Nigeria between 2019 and 2022. Women who tested positive for the rapid test were followed through their pregnancy and their infants were observed for 6 months, with a subset tested by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and neutralization, to investigate seropositivity rates and MTCT of CHIKV. Results: Of the 1006, 119 tested positive for CHIKV immunoglobulin (Ig)M, of which 36 underwent detailed laboratory tests. While none of the IgM reactive samples were RT-PCR positive, 14 symptomatic pregnant women were confirmed by CHIKV neutralization test. Twelve babies were followed with eight normal and four abnormal outcomes, including stillbirth, cleft lip/palate with microcephaly, preterm delivery, polydactyly with sepsis, and jaundice. CHIKV IgM testing identified three possible antepartum transmissions. Conclusion: In Nigeria, we found significant CHIKV infection in pregnancy and possible CHIKV antepartum transmission associated with birth abnormalities.

Objectives: Mass COVID-19 immunization campaigns altered the pandemic's progress by protecting the vaccine recipient and reducing transmission. However, evidence for indirect vaccine effectiveness (IVE) is limited due to the difficulties of ascertaining this type of protection. Methods: Using linked national Brazilian databases, we adapted the test-negative design to evaluate the IVE against symptomatic infection. We analyzed data from January 1 to December 1, 2021 (pre-omicron) and January 1 to April 30, 2022 (omicron BA.1 and BA.2). We compared the probability of testing positive across various levels of second ancestral-strain monovalent COVID-19 vaccine dose coverage, including only unvaccinated individuals in the main analysis and both vaccinated and unvaccinated individuals in additional analyses. Sensitivity analysis focused on children younger than 12 years who did not have access to COVID-19 vaccines during the pre-omicron period. Gold miners working illegally in mines live in poor health conditions related to their strenuous work and precarious housing. Therefore, they are at higher risk for infectious diseases. American tegumentary leishmaniasis (ATL) appears to be of great concern to the population living in the Guiana Shield region. Our aim was to describe their demographic characteristics, the clinical features of cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL), and the frequency of Leishmania infection in people working in illegal gold mines in French Guiana. A cross-sectional study was carried out from October to December 2019 in Oiapoque city, Amapá, Brazil. Indeed, many gold miners working in French Guiana are originally from Brazil, and from Oiapoque in particular. A total of 105 participants from 31 different mining sites in French Guiana were recruited. Suspected Leishmania infection was confirmed by the following: detection of kDNA in blood or the lesion site; detection of specific antibodies; or detection of IFN-γ release after blood incubation with leishmanial antigens (IGRA-Leish). Nine active CL cases, 38 healed ATL (hATL) and 58 cases with no history of ATL (noATL), were identified. Only half of the treated hATL (50.0%; n = 14) reported having been assisted by a health care unit and the others treated themselves. PCR-kDNA for Leishmania was positive in the blood of 100% of CL cases. Curiously, blood PCR-kDNA was positive in 13% of hATL patients and in 15.5% of noATL patients. The IGRA-Leish was positive in 60.5% of hATL and in 37.9% of noATL. In addition to scars suggestive of CL, 71% of hATL had laboratory evidence of Leishmania infection. Restriction fragment polymorphism (RFLP) of the hsp70 gene identified a sympatric circulation of L. (V.) guyanensis (n = 4), L. (V.) braziliensis (n = 1), L. (L.) amazonensis (n = 2), L. (V.) shawi (n = 1) and L. (V.) naiffi/shawi (n = 1). Taking the laboratory techniques and the clinical evaluations together, 76% (n = 80) of the 105 participants had evidence of Leishmania infection. These results suggests that illegal gold miners working in French Guiana are at high risk for infection with different species of Leishmania, but their illegal condition and remoteness make it difficult for them to access health services.

Abstract Horse fly females (Diptera, Tabanidae) are hematophagous and can vector pathogens that affect livestock. Complexes of cryptic species are common in Tabanidae, as exemplified by some species of Tabanus, including Tabanus triangulum and Tabanus occidentalis, both prevalent in the Southern region of Brazil. In this study, geometric morphometrics were employed to ascertain the wing venation in species identification. It was demonstrated that this tool effectively differentiates T. triangulum from T. occidentalis in the coastal plain of Rio Grande do Sul state, situated within the Pampa biome. The results indicate that T. triangulum and T. occidentalis occupy distinct regions of the morphological space, allowing their precise identification through geometric morphometrics, which is fast, affordable, and easy to implement.

Strand monitoring is valuable for identifying human-caused threats to sea turtles but has limitations in fully understanding their overall impact. To address this gap, we conducted a survey to examine sea turtle interactions with longline fisheries, focusing on the types of hooks used for different target fish species. The study aimed to determine the prevalence of sea turtles entangled with hooks in these fisheries and to investigate seasonal and spatial variations in strandings. From August 2015 to December 2020, regular surveys were carried out along 2,013 km, on the South and Southeast coasts of Brazil to monitor sea turtle strandings. Data were collected on the presence and types of hooks, as well as the developmental stages of the affected turtles. The study analyzed spatial and seasonal variations and conducted necropsies to determine causes of death and assess internal damage from fishing gear. A total of 4,631 stranded sea turtles were documented: Caretta caretta, n=3,678, w/hooks=96; Lepidochelys olivacea, n=753, w/hooks=20, and Dermochelys coriacea, n=200, w/hooks= 01. Four types of hooks were identified, with a predominance of “J” hooks typically used in the region to capture dolphinfish, Coryphaena hippurus (72/122 hooks). The most affected developmental stages were large juveniles of C. caretta and L. olivacea. The distribution of hooks differed among the states; “J” hooks targeting C. hippurus on the continental shelf were predominantly found in São Paulo state. In contrast, circular hooks for swordfish (Xiphias gladius) and tuna hooks for tuna (Thunnus spp.), used in offshore fisheries, were more common in southern states. The abundance of “J”, hooks increased during the spring months, aligning with the C. hippurus fishing season. “J” hooks were primarily found in the esophagus of stranded turtles (88/122), indicating that their size and shape facilitate ingestion. Necropsies revealed that 43.1% of deaths (50/116) were due to intestinal lesions caused by hooks, fishing lines, and/or cables. Despite the small relative frequency of individuals found with hooks (117/4631), pelagic longline fisheries, especially those targeting C. hippurus, are a serious threat to sea turtle populations and, therefore, require specific monitoring and mitigating measures. Furthermore, the number of affected individuals may be underestimated since stranding does not represent total mortality at sea.

The field of physical human-robot interaction has dramatically evolved in the last decades. As a result, the robotic system's requirements have become more challenging, including personalized behavior for different tasks and users. Various machine learning techniques have been proposed to give the robot such adaptability features. This paper proposes a model-based evolutionary optimization algorithm to tune the apparent impedance of a wrist rehabilitation device. We used passivity to define boundaries for the possible controller outcomes, limiting the shared autonomy of the robot and ensuring the coupled system stability. The experiment consists of a hardware-in-the-loop optimization and a one-degree-of-freedom robot used for wrist rehabilitation. Experimental results showed that the proposed technique could generate customized passive impedance controllers for three subjects. Este estudo qualitativo teve por objetivo compreender os significados, as motivações e os sinais atribuídos ao comportamento suicida, na perspectiva de estudantes do ensino médio de escola pública da Região Sul do Brasil. Para a coleta de dados, utilizou-se a Técnica de Grupo Focal. A organização e análise dos dados sustentaram-se na Grounded Theory, com o auxílio do software Atlas.ti 8.4.15. A construção dos significados e das motivações para o comportamento suicida, decorre das experiências familiares, escolares, de amigos, mídia e redes sociais digitais. Os sinais relacionados com o comportamento suicida foram: isolamento, deixar de fazer hobbies, baixa autoestima, desmotivação e silêncio, falar muito sobre o assunto, automutilação, pensamento negativo e comportamentos estranhos. Os resultados evidenciaram que o reconhecimento dos sinais é atravessado pelos significados e as motivações que são atribuídos ao comportamento suicida e se fundamentam na construção social-histórica-relacional.

Holography is a technique that consists of reflections using laser beams on glass surfaces, resulting in a hologram. This method was developed by Dennis Gabor when he was looking to improve the image quality of the electronic microscope and accidentally, gave rise to the hologram. The objective of this article was to do a research of texts that brings concepts and possibilities from the use of holography, hologram and "holographic pyramid" on education. The methodology approached was the bibliographic review. The search was done in CAPES database with access to CAFE space, without time clipping. The results founded were seven articles that talks about the application of these techniques on learning and the predominance of holography, hologram and ''holographic pyramid'' on physics and engineering areas. It was also evident that this theme brings a recent discussion for education. In addition to, the research showed that the literature available on databases is predominantly international. As conclusion, holography, hologram and ''holographic pyramid'' are new and enriching proposals on educational areas, despite their differences in concepts, it is possible to use this technique in the classroom context, helping teachers and facilitating the learning of some contents.

We report the first documented record of this species from São Paulo state, southeastern Brazil. The specimen was found beached in Mongaguá municipality. Morphological assessment, necropsy, and histological analysis allowed us to identify species, reproductive state (non-breeding), and sex (male) of this specimen.

ABSTRACT Objective: Expand knowledge on the role and efficacy of carbamazepine (CBZ) in bipolar disorder (BD), based on original studies. Methods: The authors performed a systematic review of the scientific literature on the efficacy of CBZ in BD, using the PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science (ISI), and SciELO databases. The search terms were: (“carbamazepine”) AND (“bipolar” OR “mania” OR “manic”). There was no restriction on the year of publication. Results: A total of 27 articles were selected. Among the selected articles, 14 evaluated the use of CBZ in the manic phase of BD, two in the depressive phase of BD, and 11 in the maintenance phase of BD. In the studies on the manic phase of BD, CBZ proved superior to placebo (PLA). As for the depressive phase of BD, there were two studies, both with small samples. In the maintenance phase, CBZ was inferior to lithium, and no studies compared CBZ to PLA. Conclusion: The results of the clinical studies suggest that CBZ is effective for the treatment of the manic phase. Regarding the treatment of acute depression and maintenance of BD, the results of the studies indicate that there is not enough data demonstrating the effectiveness of CBZ.

32. Relationships between Young South Koreans' Online Activities and Their Risk of Exploitation

The misuse of the Internet that takes advantage of adolescents and young adults' lack of understanding along with their growing online presence has left them at risk. A study comprising 1,092 South Korean high school students investigated ways in which adolescents and young adults may be exploited while engaged in popular and everyday online activities. Specifically, exposure to sexually explicit material (SEM) and violent content, cyberbullying, malware, phishing, and identity theft were examined in the contexts of social media, streaming movies and/or television, streaming and/or posting videos, downloading and/or listening to music, downloading and/or sharing files, involvement in free and/or subscription-based online gaming, reading news, emailing, surfing, and completing school assignments. The findings reveal prevalence rates consistent with the literature on young people's technology use and online activities; moreover, exposure to SEM and cyberbullying were found to have statistically significant relationships with these activities. These are findings consistent with studies concluding that exposure to SEM and online bullying are two of the most serious issues related to young people today and, therefore, warrant continued attention to identifying strategies that can be used to curb risky online behavior. With more and more students using the Internet to access educational content and complete schoolwork in online and blended courses, it is imperative that young people are taught how to safeguard themselves when online.

Este estudo objetivou verificar o nível de engajamento dos stakeholders na governança hídrica brasileira. Procedeu-se à análise de conteúdo de todas as 73 atas e relatos integrais das reuniões do Conselho Nacional de Recursos Hídricos (CNRH) disponíveis, referentes ao período compreendido entre 1998, ano de criação do órgão, e 2021. Diante da análise dos dados, observou-se a participação expressiva dos segmentos de stakeholders na governança hídrica nacional, não apenas por meio manifestações não deliberativas, mas também pelo exercício do poder de decisão. Concluiu-se que todos os segmentos de stakeholders situam-se no nível 3 da escala de engajamento, que corresponde ao empoderamento. Dentro desse nível, o qual se subdivide em três, os segmentos de stakeholders concentraram-se nos dois níveis mais elevados de engajamento, que são o poder delegado e o controle pelo stakeholder. Ao se verificar os níveis de engajamento dos stakeholders, operacionaliza-se esse construto teórico, transformando-o em um conhecimento concreto, passível de ser aplicado, medido e consolidado. Dessa sorte, contribuiu-se para o preenchimento da lacuna no conhecimento sobre o engajamento dos stakeholders, demonstrando-se a adequação do construto à realidade da Política Nacional de Recursos Hídricos. A matriz de engajamento utilizada pode servir como modelo para as políticas estaduais de recursos hídricos e para políticas públicas estrangeiras.

Os diferentes grupos de stakeholders e seus aspectos de influência na alocação de valor vêm ganhando crescente demanda por parte das organizações e da academia. Na literatura recente de stakeholders, há um desenvolvimento teórico sobre distribuição de valor considerando atributos de importância estratégica e poder; no entanto, a literatura ainda carece de estudos empíricos para analisar e compreender a relação. Este trabalho tem como objetivo verificar a associação entre poder e importância estratégica dos stakeholders e a distribuição de valor a eles por empresas de capital aberto na Bolsa de Valores de Toronto (TSX). Para obter as informações relevantes sobre o tratamento dado pelas empresas aos seus stakeholders, analisamos o conteúdo de 104 prospectos para o processo de IPO da TSX de 2008 a 2019. Os resultados revelaram que o poder e a importância estratégica são relevantes para a distribuição de valor aos stakeholders e que a importância estratégica dos stakeholders tem uma influência mais significativa quando comparada ao seu poder. Quanto às contribuições, o nosso estudo avança debates anteriores na literatura de stakeholders em termos teóricos e práticos.

Summary: Legumes establish a symbiotic relationship with nitrogen-fixing rhizobia by developing nodules. Nodules are modified lateral roots that undergo changes in their cellular development in response to bacteria, but the transcriptional reprogramming that occurs in these root cells remains largely uncharacterized. Here, we describe the cell-type-specific transcriptome response of Medicago truncatula roots to rhizobia during early nodule development in the wild-type genotype Jemalong A17, complemented with a hypernodulating mutant (sunn-4) to expand the cell population responding to infection and subsequent biological inferences. The analysis identifies epidermal root hair and stele sub-cell types associated with a symbiotic response to infection and regulation of nodule proliferation. Trajectory inference shows cortex-derived cell lineages differentiating to form the nodule primordia and, posteriorly, its meristem, while modulating the regulation of phytohormone-related genes. Gene regulatory analysis of the cell transcriptomes identifies new regulators of nodulation, including STYLISH 4, for which the function is validated.

38. Evaluating the Effects of Parameter Uncertainty on River Water Quality Predictions

Due to the high uncertainty of model predictions, it is often challenging to draw definitive conclusions when evaluating river water quality in the context of management options. The major aim of this study is to present a statistical evaluation of the Hydrologic Simulation Program FORTRAN (HSPF), which is a water quality modeling system, and how this modeling system can be used as a valuable tool to enhance monitoring planning and reduce uncertainty in water quality predictions. The authors’ findings regarding the sensitivity analysis of the HSPF model in relation to water quality predictions are presented. The application of the computer model was focused on the Ave River watershed in Portugal. Calibration of the hydrology was performed at two stations over five years, starting from January 1990 and ending in December 1994. Following the calibration, the hydrology model was then validated for another five-year period, from January 1995 to December 1999. A comprehensive evaluation framework is proposed, which includes a two-step statistical evaluation based on commonly used hydrology criteria for model calibration and validation. To thoroughly assess model uncertainty and parameter sensitivity, a Monte Carlo method uncertainty evaluation approach is integrated, along with multi-parametric sensitivity analyses. The Monte Carlo simulation considers the probability distributions of fourteen HSPF water quality parameters, which are used as input factors. The parameters that had the greatest impact on the simulated in-stream fecal coliform concentrations were those that represented the first-order decay rate and the surface runoff mechanism, which effectively removed 90 percent of the fecal coliform from the pervious land surface. These parameters had a more significant influence compared to the accumulation and maximum storage rates. When it comes to the oxygen governing process, the parameters that showed the highest sensitivity were benthal oxygen demand and nitrification/denitrification rate. The insights that can be derived from this study play a critical role in the development of robust water management strategies, and their significance lies in their potential to contribute to the advancement of predictive models in the field of water resources.

The phenomenon of chemsex has emerged as an essential public health issue in recent years. This systematic review aimed to investigate currently available harm reduction strategies and to evaluate the efficacy of the corresponding interventions. Methods: A systematic review of the scientific literature related to harm and risk reduction strategies and the effectiveness of chemsex interventions. Between January 2024 and May 2024, the articles were retrieved from the electronic databases Pubmed, Web of Science, Scopus, PsycInfo, Cochrane, Dialnet, CUIDEN, and SciELO. The review protocol was registered in the PROSPERO database (registration number CRD42024508953). The inclusion criteria were as follows: (I) original studies published in peer-reviewed journals, (II) studies exploring harm reduction interventions for chemsex, and (III) studies reflecting the efficacy of harm reduction interventions for chemsex. Two reviewers independently selected articles by title, abstract, and full paper review and extracted data. Two authors described the selected studies and assessed their methodological quality. Results: The systematic review comprised six scientific papers that met the selection criteria and were obtained from five countries. Although a limited number of studies were included, it was observed that they presented a medium–high methodological quality. Programs evaluated interventions to reduce harm from chemsex, such as a web-based intervention that improved self-efficacy to refuse risky behaviors and accept HIV testing. The studies suggested that peer-led programs can be effective, especially with facilitators who have experienced chemsex dependence. Conclusion: Harm reduction strategies in chemsex are effective and should be promoted by health professionals. In robotics, the ability of quadruped robots to perform tasks in industrial, mining, and disaster environments has already been demonstrated. To ensure the safe execution of tasks by the robot, meticulous planning of its foot placements and precise leg control are crucial. Traditional motion planning and control methods for quadruped robots often rely on complex models of both the robot itself and its surrounding environment. Establishing these models can be challenging due to their nonlinear nature, often entailing significant computational resources. However, a more simplified approach exists that focuses on the kinematic model of the robot’s floating base for motion planning. This streamlined method is easier to implement but also adaptable to simpler hardware configurations. Moreover, integrating impedance control into the leg movements proves advantageous, particularly when traversing uneven terrain. This article presents a novel approach in which a quadruped robot employs impedance control for each leg. It utilizes sixth-degree Bézier curves to generate reference trajectories derived from leg velocities within a planar kinematic model for body control. This scheme effectively guides the robot along predefined paths. The proposed control strategy is implemented using the Robot Operating System (ROS) and is validated through simulations and physical experiments on the Go1 robot. The results of these tests demonstrate the effectiveness of the control strategy, enabling the robot to track reference trajectories while showing stable walking and trotting gaits.

Abstract Background Indigenous people have historically suffered devastating impacts from epidemics and continue to have lower access to healthcare and be especially vulnerable to respiratory infections. We estimated the coverage and effectiveness of Covid-19 vaccines against laboratory-confirmed Covid-19 cases among indigenous people in Brazil. Methods We linked nationwide Covid-19 vaccination data with flu-like surveillance records and studied a cohort of vaccinated indigenous people aged ≥ 5 years between 18th January 2021 and 1st March 2022. We considered individuals unexposed from the date they received the first dose of vaccine until the 13th day of vaccination, partially vaccinated from the 14th day after the first dose until the 13th day after receiving the second dose, and fully vaccinated onwards. We estimated the Covid-19 vaccination coverage and used Poisson regression to calculate the relative risks (RR) and vaccine effectiveness (VE) of CoronaVac, ChAdOx1, and BNT162b2 against Covid-19 laboratory-confirmed cases incidence, mortality, hospitalisation, and hospital-progression to Intensive Care Unit (ICU) or death. VE was estimated as (1-RR)*100, comparing unexposed to partially or fully vaccinated. Results By 1st March 2022, 48.7% (35.0-62.3) of eligible indigenous people vs. 74.8% (57.9–91.8) overall Brazilians had been fully vaccinated for Covid-19. Among fully vaccinated indigenous people, we found a lower risk of symptomatic cases (RR: 0.47, 95%CI: 0.40–0.56) and mortality (RR: 0.47, 95%CI: 0.14–1.56) after the 14th day of the second dose. VE for the three Covid-19 vaccines combined was 53% (95%CI:44–60%) for symptomatic cases, 53% (95%CI:-56-86%) for mortality and 41% (95%CI:-35-75%) for hospitalisation. In our sample, we found that vaccination did not reduce Covid-19 related hospitalisation. However, among hospitalised patients, we found a lower risk of progression to ICU (RR: 0.14, 95%CI: 0.02–0.81; VE: 87%, 95%CI:27–98%) and Covid-19 death (RR: 0.04, 95%CI:0.01–0.10; VE: 96%, 95%CI: 90–99%) after the 14th day of the second dose. Conclusions Lower coverage but similar Covid-19 VE among indigenous people than overall Brazilians suggest the need to expand access, timely vaccination, and urgently offer booster doses to achieve a great level of protection among this group.

Salmonellosis, an infectious disease caused by the Salmonella species, encompasses a broad spectrum of clinical manifestations, ranging from mild self-limiting gastroenteritis to severe systemic infections. It affects millions of people annually, causing immense morbidity and economic losses worldwide. This study aims to evaluate the occurrence of Salmonella in water and raw foods, focusing on meat, fish, shellfish, and vegetables consumed in the city of Nampula, north of Mozambique. A total of 81 samples of meat, fish and shellfish, vegetables, and water were collected from nine of the ten municipal markets in Nampula City. Salmonella detections were performed according to ISO 6579-1. A chi-square test was performed in the Python programming language to detect associations between positive samples and market localization. The results showed a high frequency of Salmonella. From the total sample, 38.5% were Salmonella positive. Fresh vegetables were the most contaminated samples, followed by fish, shellfish, raw meat, and water. The outcomes of this study did not find an association between the sample collection location and the test results for Salmonella. In this study, serovars of Salmonella were not identified which hinders the association of Salmonella occurrence with diseases. Consequently, we propose that the next study should focus on detecting the serotypes of Salmonella strains.

O presente trabalho aborda as particularidades normativas e jurídicas do bloco Mercosul. Traz à luz o debate entre os modelos de intergoverno e o supranacional, bem como analisa a possibilidade constitucional dos países fundadores – Argentina, Brasil, Uruguai e Paraguai – de adotarem o Direito Comunitário. É feita uma breve análise histórica e geopolítica das relações exteriores do Brasil. Posteriormente, são estudados os dois tipos de modelo: o de intergoverno e o supranacional. Por fim, são analisadas as Constituições de cada um dos países fundadores, no que diz respeito à admissão do Direito Comunitário, com o maior foco na Carta Magna brasileira. Por meio do compilado de pesquisa e revisão bibliográfica, com método hermenêutico e histórico-dialético, o presente trabalho busca responder à problemática da possibilidade de admissão do Direito Comunitário pelo Brasil, considerando sua Constituição, o entendimento atual do STF e de autores renomados no debate em pauta.

Como a relação entre a Medicina de Família e Comunidade e o cuidado centrado no paciente pode ser ainda mais fortalecida através da medicina narrativa? Tal reflexão faz-se necessária, já que o modelo biomédico e o avanço tecnológico de exames de imagem excederam a importância das narrativas das pessoas doentes em cuidado. Usando também de metáfora, este trabalho desenvolve-se em torno do “concerto do corpo”, comparando os três movimentos da medicina narrativa (atenção, representação e afiliação) aos três atos de um concerto musical. Rita Charon é a teórica principal. O objetivo é demonstrar como o elo entre a Medicina de Família e Comunidade e o cuidado centrado no paciente pode ser usado não só para questionar, mas também somar ao modelo biomédico; e, para isso, a ferramenta-chave desse elo foi a medicina narrativa.

Resumo Este artigo explora o Physical Cultural Studies (PCS) como potente campo de investigação relacionado ao corpo e à cultura física, desenvolvido no Brasil por pesquisadores/as em contextos locais. O texto aborda o surgimento do PCS como desdobramento do Cultural Studies, as lutas disciplinares nos departamentos de cinesiologia norte-americanos e a virada para a cultura física no interior da sociologia do esporte. Ao mesmo tempo, o estudo discute o PCS a partir das dimensões empírica, contextual, transdisciplinar, teórica, política, qualitativa, autorreflexiva e pedagógica, articulando-as a práticas locais de pesquisa e de intervenção de pesquisadores/as brasileiros/as. Por fim, o estudo lança desafios à construção de um PCS com tons brasileiros, quiçá, latino-americanos.

Industrial screwing is one of several industry branches' most common manufacturing processes. Good quality and structured data from these operations have increased demand with the popularization of data-driven techniques for manufacturing automation. The dataset presented in this paper comprises screwing experiments with aeronautical nuts performed by an industrial robot Kuka KR-16 in a lab setting. The data comprises force, torque, linear and angular displacements, and velocities in time-series format. The dataset contains three different experiment results: mounted, jammed, and not mounted, which can be used as labels for classification techniques.

Raising awareness on marine environmental issues is crucial to deepen students' knowledge on ocean sustainability. Nonetheless, ocean-related topics have not been adequately addressed through formal education curricula, thus non-formal learning activities were developed to promote Ocean Literacy among students. These include visits to the local fish market and hands-on activities of fish biological sampling. A mixed methodology with closed and open-self questionnaires and interviews, was used to assess the activities' effect in student's learning and to evaluate their implementation and importance. Results showed the activities contribution to the increased learning while promoting a more active citizenship regarding ocean conservancy.

Phytoene desaturase (PDS) is a plant enzyme involved in carotenoid biosynthesis. The PDS gene has been used as a selective marker for genome editing in several plant species, including banana (Musa spp.). Its knockout promotes dwarfism and albinism, characteristics that are easily recognizable and highly favorable. In Musa spp., the A genome increases fruit production and quality, whereas the B genome is associated with tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses. The objective of this study was to identify a molecular marker in the PDS gene to easily discriminate the A and B genomes of banana. A 2166 bp fragment for the “PDSMa” marker was identified as polymorphic for the A genome (identification accuracy of 99.33%), whereas ~332 and ~225 bp fragments were detected for the “PDSMb” marker with 100% accuracy using MedCalc software. In this study, we used genotypes with A and B genomes that are used in the genetic improvement of bananas and an accession with the BT genome. It was not possible to differentiate the accession with the BT genome from the others, suggesting that the markers do not have the capacity to separate the T genome from the A and B genomes. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to use the PDS gene to determine doses of the A genome and identify the B genome in Musa spp., which will aid in evaluating the genomic constitution of banana hybrids and accessions at the seedling stage and accelerating their classification in crop genetic improvement programs.
