K2 performance depends on different kinematic and kinetic variables. Due to the lack of related studies in this area, we have tried to explain these features to better understand the best positioning of paddlers and how their synchronization affects performance. This study uses the DAQ system comprising two instrumented paddles—an IMU and a GPS (“E-kayak” system)—to investigate paddle synchronization and the specific positioning of paddlers’ in preferred and inverted configurations. In this study, 10 sub-elite paddlers participated, divided into five crews. The test included two trials of 500 m performed in preferred and inverted seating positions. The synchronization analysis highlighted that the rear paddler contributed efficiently to the propulsion of the boat while performing 30–40 ms earlier than the front paddler during the entry and exit phases. Despite the time results for 500 m, there is no evidence indicating a dominant indication of the preferred or inverted position among the athletes. The results show a significant correlation (p < 0.05) between the force of the front paddler (r = −0.88), the stroke frequency of the crew (r = −0.66), and the total force applied by the crew with the time for 500 m and between stroke frequency and the force of the front paddler (r = 0.64). Based on these indications, for only those crews who completed the 500 m test in the shortest time, the equation determining the time over 500 m was calculated using multiple regression analysis, considering the stroke frequency and the force of the front and rear paddler. The data showed a good estimation with CV% = 0.22, ICC = 0.99, and ES = −0.005. In conclusion, these findings can serve as a beneficial tool for assessing or monitoring K2 crew performance in sub-elite paddlers.

A chemical, morphological, structural, optical, and histological analysis of the waxes of the Crocosmia x crocosmiiflora leaf surfaces was here conducted. The wettability of the adaxial and abaxial leaf surfaces was also examined in detail. The results obtained were correlated with the bioclimatic (thermopluviometric) characterization of this species, based on the wild occurrence of its parental species (C. aurea and C. pottsii). To get a better insight into the potential correlation existent between chemical/morphological/structural characteristics and thermopluviometric data, the data for Crocosmia x crocosmiiflora were subsequently contrasted with the corresponding body of information we reported earlier for seven species with different biogeographic distributions (Ceratonia siliqua L., Cercis siliquastrum L., Arundo donax L., Agapanthus africanus (L.) Hoffmann, Corymbia citriodora (Hook), Eucalyptus gunnii Hook. (Hook), and Eucalyptus globulus Labill). The results of this comparison highlight major correlations between the bioclimatic variability of the species and the chemical composition of waxes, but low or no apparent correlations with the other parameters examined. This conclusion strongly suggests the relevance of the chemical composition of leaf cuticle waxes in describing the response of vascular plants to the environmental matrix. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Building on the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) theory, in this study we investigated the association between technology-related risk factors -- referred to in the literature as technostress creators (TCs) --, job autonomy (JA), and the ratio of cortisol to dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA(S)) in hair as possible biomarker of work-related stress. A total of 85 remote workers (i.e., smart workers) in a private metalworking company completed a self-report questionnaire (i.e., psychological data) and contextually provided a strand of hair (i.e., biological data). Results from moderated multiple regression analysis showed that techno-insecurity was positively associated with log cortisol/DHEA(S) ratio at average levels of job autonomy. Additionally, JA exacerbated -- rather than buffered -- the association between technooverload/-invasion/-insecurity and log cortisol/DHEA(S) ratio. Our results suggest that hair cortisol/DHEA(S) ratio is a promising biomarker of technostress, and that remote workers may not necessarily benefit from traditional job resources such as JA. This paper addresses the dynamics of world wine consumption over the past 50 years in 26 countries, verifying whether or not there is a macro-tendency towards a common consumption style, despite differences in taxation, economic policies and distribution systems among countries. From an empirical point of view, the σ and β convergence hypotheses were formally tested. Model results confirm the existence of both types of convergences. Per capita consumption of wine first experienced a reduction in differences between countries and then converged toward a central value. "Traditional" countries, with historically high levels of consumption, showed a decrease in wine consumption, while emerging countries with historically lower consumption levels showed an increase. These findings not only provide further support to the theory of international convergence of wine consumption on a volume basis, as already observed by other researchers in the European market, but they also offer support for the theory in major world markets. Furthermore, convergence appears to be happening not only at a quantitative level but at qualitative level as well, and this phenomenon may very well reflect the changing tastes of worldwide consumers towards a generalized structure of wine consumption.

(Arundinoideae subfamily, Poaceae family) is a sub-tropical and temperate climate reed that grows in arid and semi-arid environmental conditions, from eastern China to the Mediterranean basin, suggesting potential adaptations at the epicuticular level. A thorough physical-chemical examination of the adaxial and abaxial surfaces of A. donax leaf was performed herein in an attempt to track such chemophenetic adaptations. This sort of approach is of the utmost importance for the current debate about the hypothetical invasiveness of this species in the Mediterranean basin versus its natural colonization along the Plio-Pleistocene period. We concluded that the leaf surfaces contain, apart from stomata, prickles, and long, thin trichomes, and silicon-rich tetralobate phytolits. Chemically, the dominating elements in the leaf ashes are oxygen and potassium; minor amounts of calcium, silicon, magnesium, phosphorous, sulphur, and chlorine were also detected. In both surfaces the epicuticular waxes (whose density is higher in the adaxial surface than in the abaxial surface) form randomly orientated platelets, with irregular shape and variable size, and aggregated rodlets with variable diameter around the stomata. In the case of green mature leaves, the dominating organic compounds of the epicuticular waxes of both surfaces are triterpenoids. Both surfaces feature identical hydrophobic behaviour, and exhibit the same total transmittance, total reflectance, and absorption of incident light. The above findings suggest easy growth of the plant, remarkable epidermic robustness of the leaf, and control of water loss. These chemophenetic characteristics and human influence support a neolithization process of this species along the Mediterranean basin.

The SARS-CoV-2 responsible for the ongoing COVID pandemic reveals particular evolutionary dynamics and an extensive polymorphism, mainly in Spike gene. Monitoring the S gene mutations is crucial for successful controlling measures and detecting variants that can evade vaccine immunity. Even after the costs reduction resulting from the pandemic, the new generation sequencing methodologies remain unavailable to a large number of scientific groups. Therefore, to support the urgent surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 S gene, this work describes a new feasible protocol for complete nucleotide sequencing of the S gene using the Sanger technique. Such a methodology could be easily adopted by any laboratory with experience in sequencing, adding to effective surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 spreading and evolution.

Abstract In this paper, we have constructed and tested a simple methodology for assessing and predicting climate change effects on agricultural yields. The methodology follows two steps. First, we econometrically estimate the marginal product of key production inputs (e.g., labor and land), through the estimation of production functions. Then, we predict future agricultural sector performance, by assuming a future with climate-induced changes in the land use and in agricultural labor use, under different IPCC scenarios. We also assume that no dramatic technological change in agriculture production will occur in the near future, so that the selected inputs will present the same marginal product. We assume that the agricultural sector might develop differently under different climate change-induced scenarios and that the use of land and labor will change accordingly. In this way, we are able to compute predictions on the agricultural sector performance in the future, under very different circumstances. We apply the methodology for predicting the sector performance of the Veneto region in 2030. Results differ according to the selected IPCC scenario and consequent input use variations. In the selected case study, for instance, land presents a very high productivity and climate-induced changes in the land use might dramatically (positively and negatively) affect agricultural yields under different IPCC scenarios. In this perspective, the climate change adaptation and mitigation policies and options should primarily aim at the preservation of land productivity in Veneto.

Chayote leaves are known for culinary and traditional medicine applications. This work intended to recover carotenoids and phenolic compounds from chayote leaves using the ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE). A Box–Behnken design was employed to investigate the impact of extraction time, temperature, and ultrasonic power on the recovery of total carotenoids, total phenolic compounds, and antioxidant activities. For comparative purposes, chayote leaf extracts were prepared by maceration (ME) and microwave-assisted extraction (MAE), using the same time and temperature conditions optimized by UAE. Extraction at 50 °C and 170 Watts for 30 min provided the optimal UAE conditions. UAE showed better extraction efficacy than ME and MAE. The HPLC analysis of the extracts showed that the xanthophyll class was the main class of carotenoids, which constituted 42–85% of the total carotenoid content, followed by β-carotene and tocopherol. Moreover, 26 compounds, classified as phenolic acids, flavonols, flavonoids and other polar compounds, were identified in the chayote leaf extracts. Flavonols accounted for 55% of the total compounds quantified (the major compound was myricetin) and phenolic acids represented around 35%, mostly represented by ferulic acid, chlorogenic acid and (+)-catechin. This study revealed the potential of UAE as an effective green extraction technique to recover bioactive compounds from chayote leaves, for food, and for pharmaceutical and cosmetic applications.

This study pointed to explore if variations in circulating levels of metabolites in the blood stream of no. 25 feral donkeys occur in view of the different coat color between specimens of Asinara (albino, no. 8) vs. Sardo (dun-grey, no. 17) breed. All individuals involved in this investigation are living in the nature, at Mediterranean latitudes and roam in the same areas all over the National Park of Capo Caccia, where they feed on spontaneous vegetation sources. The study was conducted during the positive photoperiod of the boreal hemisphere (peak in the month of June, 2019) to maximize the effect of exposure to the natural sun radiation and thus elicit the coping ability of albino (Asinara) in comparison with pigmented donkeys (Sardo). The biochemical profile of all donkeys was used in a Discriminant Analysis (DA) to explore if circulating levels of metabolites could point to metabolic markers for breed assignment of individuals following a canonical discriminant analysis (CANDISC). The biochemical investigation included also the determination of the circulating Vitamin E (alpha tocopherol, α-TOH), as an essential biologically active compound involved in antioxidant mechanisms, and its respective status (circulating α-TOH to total triglycerides and total cholesterol ratio). In the CANDISC, the distance between the two breeds was not significant. However, it pointed to different metabolites (UREA, total protein, total triglycerides, Zn) capable of describing biochemical patterns on each respective breed (Asinara vs. Sardo). The multivariate analysis DA carried out using 22 metabolites correctly assigned individuals to the two breeds in the 100% of cases. In view of such metabolic background, circulating α-TOH found in the bloodstream of Asinara vs. Sardo donkeys under free grazing conditions turned out to reach similar values (2.114 vs. 1.872 µg/ml, respectively, p = 0.676). It is worth noting that significant differences were observed as to circulating lactate dehydrogenase (LDH, p = 0.022) levels, in association with increased creatine phosphokinase (CPK, p = 0.076), both above the upper limit of the physiological range reported in other donkey breeds, and found in the totality of Asinara (albino) donkeys solely, still apparently clinically healthy.

In this paper, we study the stability of the ring solution of the N -body problem in the entire sphere $\mathbb {S}^2$ by using the logarithmic potential proposed in Boatto et al. (2016, Proceedings of the Royal Society of London. Series A. Mathematical, Physical and Engineering Sciences 472, 20160020) and Dritschel (2019, Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London. Series A. Mathematical, Physical and Engineering Sciences 377, 20180349), derived through a definition of central force and Hodge decomposition theorem for 1-forms in manifolds. First, we characterize the ring solution and study its spectral stability, obtaining regions (spherical caps) where the ring solution is spectrally stable for $2\leq N\leq 6$ , while, for $N\geq 7$ , the ring is spectrally unstable. The nonlinear stability is studied by reducing the system to the homographic regular polygonal solutions, obtaining a 2-d.o.f. Hamiltonian system, and therefore some classic results on stability for 2-d.o.f. Hamiltonian systems are applied to prove that the ring solution is unstable at any parallel where it is placed. Additionally, this system can be reduced to 1-d.o.f. by using the angular momentum integral, which enables us to describe the phase portraits and use them to find periodic ring solutions to the full system. Abstract Previous works on albinism form of Asinara white donkeys (Equus asinus) identified the mutation leading to the peculiar phenotype spread to all specimens of the breed. Inbreeding naturally occurred under geographic isolation, on Asinara Island, in the Mediterranean Sea. Albino individuals can be more susceptible to develop health problems when exposed to natural sun radiation. Alternative metabolic pathways involved in photoprotection were explored in this trial. Nutrition‐related metabolites are believed to contribute to the conservation of Asinara donkeys, in which melanin, guaranteeing photoprotection, is lacking. Biochemical profiles with particular focus on blood serum β‐carotene and retinol levels were monitored. Identical natural grazing conditions for both Asinara (albino) and Sardo (pigmented) donkey breeds were assured on same natural pastures throughout the experimental period. A comparative metabolic screening, with emphasis on circulating retinol and nutrient‐related metabolites between the two breeds, was carried out over one year. Potential intra‐ and interspecimen fluctuations of metabolites involved in photoprotection were monitored, both during negative and positive photoperiods. Differences (p = .064) between blood serum concentrations of retinol from Asinara versus Sardo breed donkeys (0.630 vs. 0.490 μg/ml, respectively) were found. Retinol levels of blood serum turned out to be similar in the two groups (0.523 vs. 0.493 μg/ml, respectively, p = .051) during the negative photoperiod, but markedly differed during the positive one (0.738 vs. 0.486, respectively, p = .016). Blood serum β‐carotene levels displayed to be constantly around the limit of sensitivity in all animals of both breeds. Variations in blood serum concentrations of retinol in Asinara white donkeys can reflect the need to cope with seasonal exposure to daylight at Mediterranean latitudes, as an alternative to the lack of melanin. These results may suggest that a pulsed mobilization of retinol from body stores occurs to increase circulating levels during positive photoperiod.

The aim of this study was to identify Candida species isolated from women diagnosed with recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis (RVVC) and their partners; and to evaluate the fluconazole (FLZ) susceptibility of the isolates. In a period of six years, among 172 patients diagnosed with vulvovaginal candidiasis, 13 women that presented RVVC and their partners were selected for this investigation. The isolates were obtained using Chromagar Candida medium, the species identification was performed by phenotypic and molecular methods and FLZ susceptibility was evaluated by E-test. Among 26 strains we identified 14 Candida albicans, six Candida duobushaemulonii, four Candida glabrata, and two Candida tropicalis. Agreement of the isolated species occurred in 100% of the couples. FLZ low susceptibility was observed for all isolates of C. duobushaemulonii (minimal inhibitory concentration values from 8-> 64 µg/mL), two C. glabrata isolates were FLZ-resistant and all C. albicans and C. tropicalis isolates were FLZ-susceptible. This report emphasises the importance of accurate identification of the fungal agents by a reliable molecular technique in RVVC episodes besides the lower antifungal susceptibility profile of this rare pathogen C. duobushaemulonii to FLZ.
