Microscopic identification of Plasmodium spp. is the gold standard for malaria diagnosis. However, malaria rapid diagnostic test kits are also available for prompt diagnosis. This study evaluated four routinely used malaria rapid diagnostic test kits at the Enyiresi Government Hospital in the Eastern Region of Ghana. This cross-sectional study was conducted among 238 patients suspected of malaria. Venous blood samples were collected to identify Plasmodium falciparum using microscopic techniques. Further, the performances of four malaria rapid diagnostic test kits, First Response Malaria Ag Pf, Carestart Malaria Pf, SD Bioline Ag Pf, and ABON Malaria Pf, were evaluated using the results from the microscopy as the standard reference. As confirmed by microscopy, 65.5% (156/238) of the patients have falciparum malaria. All malaria rapid diagnostic test kits had sensitivities and specificities over 75% compared to microscopy results as the reference standard. However, the SD Bioline Ag Pf kit recorded the highest agreement with the microscopy (Cohen’s kappa=0.879). All the malaria rapid diagnostic test kits performed quite well and can be used in emergencies. However, results from these kits need to be confirmed by microscopy.

Aedes aegypti is an important vector of arboviral diseases including dengue and yellow fever. Despite the wide distribution of this mosquito species, there are limited data on the ecology of Ae . aegypti in Ghana. In this study, we report on the oviposition preference and the larval life tables of Ae . aegypti mosquitoes in Accra, Ghana. The oviposition preference of the mosquitoes to three habitat types (car tyres, drums and bowls) was measured by setting up ovitraps. We recorded the presence and abundance of larvae every 3 days. Two-hour-old Ae. aegypti larvae were introduced and raised in three habitat types to undertake larval life tables. The number of surviving larvae at each developmental stage was recorded daily until they emerged as adults. Car tyres showed a higher abundance of Ae. aegypti larvae (52.3%) than drums (32.5%) and bowls (15.1%) (ANOVA, F (2, 159)  = 18.79, P  < 0.001). The mean development time of Ae. aegypti larvae was significantly lower in car tyres (7 ± 1 days) compared to that of bowls (9 ± 0.0 days) and drums (12.6 ± 1.5 days) ( P  = 0.024). The differences in pupation rates and emergence rates were not significant across the habitat types; however, the highest pupation rate was observed in bowls (0.92 ± 0.17) and the emergence rate was highest in tyres (0.84 ± 0.10). The proportion of first-instar larvae that survived to emergence was significantly higher in car tyres (0.84 ± 0.10) compared to that of bowls (0.72 ± 0.20) and drums (0.62 ± 0.20) ( P  = 0.009). No mortalities were observed after 9 days in car tyres, 10 days in bowls and 15 days in drums. The results confirm that discarded car tyres were the preferred habitat choice for the oviposition of gravid female Ae . aegypti mosquitoes and provide the best habitat conditions for larval development and survival. The invasive Anopheles stephensi mosquito has rapidly expanded in range in Africa over the past decade. Consistent with World Health Organization guidelines, routine entomologic surveillance of malaria vectors in Accra, Ghana, now includes morphologic and molecular surveillance of An. stephensi mosquitoes. We report detection of An. stephensi mosquitoes in Ghana.

Background: Clothianidin, an insecticide with a novel mode of action, has been deployed in the annual indoor residual spraying programme in northern Ghana since March 2021. To inform pragmatic management strategies and guide future studies, baseline data on local Anopheles gambiae sensu lato (s.l.) susceptibility to the clothianidin insecticide were collected in Kpalsogu, a village in the Northern region, Ghana., Methods: Phenotypic susceptibility of An. gambiae mosquitoes to clothianidin was assessed using the World Health Organization (WHO) insecticide resistance monitoring bioassay. The WHO cone bioassays were conducted on mud and cement walls sprayed with Sumishield 50 wettable granules (WG) (with clothianidin active ingredient). Daily mortalities were recorded for up to 7 days to observe for delayed mortalities. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique was used to differentiate the sibling species of the An. gambiae complex and also for the detection of knock down resistance genes (kdr) and the insensitive acetylcholinesterase mutation (ace-1)., Results: The WHO susceptibility bioassay revealed a delayed killing effect of clothianidin. Mosquitoes exposed to the cone bioassays for 5 min died 120 h after exposure. Slightly higher mortalities were observed in mosquitoes exposed to clothianidin-treated cement wall surfaces than mosquitoes exposed to mud wall surfaces. The kdr target-site mutation L1014F occurred at very high frequencies (0.89-0.94) across all vector species identified whereas the ace-1 mutation occurred at moderate levels (0.32-0.44). Anopheles gambiae sensu stricto was the most abundant species observed at 63%, whereas Anopheles arabiensis was the least observed at 9%., Conclusions: Anopheles gambiae s.l. mosquitoes in northern Ghana were susceptible to clothianidin. They harboured kdr mutations at high frequencies. The ace-1 mutation occurred in moderation. Primary prevention is the cornerstone of public health. Prevention is especially important for chronic diseases of significant burden such as mental illnesses because many of them have limited treatment options, an onset in childhood or in adolescence, and are linked to adverse childhood experiences requiring a focus on early childhood and maternal-child health (MCH). Despite this need, there appears to be a paucity of research into prevention of mental illnesses within public health. To confirm this, we performed a systematic literature review to quantify the proportion of articles in public health that focus on prevention of mental illness versus intervention for these illnesses after their onset, and the proportion of published articles within MCH that focus on mental health. Between November 2019 and August 2021, we reviewed 211,794 published articles from 147 Scimago-ranked English public health journals with no limit on year of publication. As hypothesized, a very small portion (2.2%) of mental health articles included primary prevention and a small portion of MCH articles (7.8%) included mental health. These results are consistent with the existence of a research gap in mental illness prevention within the public health field. Given the early onset of mental illness, the importance of early childhood experiences in the later development of mental illness, and the importance of the social-emotional connection between mother and child for building resilience, public health professionals must incorporate evidence from the field of MCH to develop and assess more primary prevention programs for mental illness., Competing Interests: The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (© 2023 The Authors. Implementation is underway for many of these programs, and there are descriptions of activities elsewhere in this symposium. The Board recognizes that in dealing with the complications of a chronic disease like diabetes, many years of intense effort will be needed before significant results may be appreciated. Progress will be monitored regularly by the Surveillance Council and SCDCP/DHEC, and modifications of the plan will be made by the Board at intervals after review of the data. We are optimistic that over the next decade, this system will make a significant impact to reduce mortality, morbidity, and costs of diabetes, and the result will be an increased quality of life for people affected by diabetes in South Carolina.

In conclusion, South Carolina has a higher prevalence of diabetes compared to the national average. Age is a major factor associated with increased prevalence. African Americans had a disproportionately higher prevalence of diabetes relative to white Americans in South Carolina. Compared to the standards of diabetes care recommended by the ADA, health care practice by people with diabetes and health professionals still needs to be improved. Diabetes communication programs, including diabetes education for people with diabetes and health professional education, continue to be necessary for the improvement of diabetes care.

Five biphasic tumors, four fibroadenomas and one cystosarcoma phyllodes, are reported in the male breast. Gynecomastia and lobular development were present in all five cases. The rarity of fibroadenoma and cystosarcoma phyllodes in men is attributed to the absence of lobules in the normal male breast. We propose that lobular development precedes biphasic tumors in the male breast. The development of lobules apparently requires a certain length and/or intensity of endogenous or exogenous estrogenic stimulation not frequently attained at the levels that commonly induce gynecomastia.

1. The pharmacokinetics of gludopa in healthy volunteers were studied at two doses, 250 micrograms kg-1 and 100 micrograms kg-1, after rapid intravenous bolus injection. 2. Gludopa had a clearance of 4.43 +/- 1.50 ml min-1 kg-1 and 4.92 ml min-1 kg-1 at the higher and lower doses, respectively. Corresponding half-lives were 29.2 +/- 3.7 min and 32.5 +/- 5.6 min, and volumes of distribution were 0.183 +/- 0.052 l kg-1 and 0.235 +/- 0.07/ l kg-1. 3. Urinary excretion of dopamine rose sharply after injection of gludopa at both doses, peaking at 30 min. At this time, amounts were over 215 and 60 times baseline values at the higher and lower dose of gludopa, respectively. Urinary dopamine rose in parallel with urinary levodopa excretion, supporting the view that levodopa is the precursor of urinary dopamine. 4. Less than 1% of the injected dose of gludopa was excreted unchanged in the urine. 5. These findings suggest that, in man, gludopa is an efficient pro-drug for dopamine. Gludopa may find therapeutic use in conditions where the beneficial renal effects of dopamine may be indicated.

1. The pharmacokinetics of gamma-glutamyl-L-dopa (gludopa) and its metabolite, L-dopa, have been studied in normal rats at three dose levels of gludopa: 2 mg kg-1, 5 mg kg-1 and 7.5 mg kg-1. The extent of metabolism in normal rats, and the pharmacokinetics in anephric rats and rats with glycerol-induced acute renal failure (ARF) were also studied at a gludopa dose of 2 mg kg-1. 2. Gludopa was extensively metabolised to L-dopa with only about 10% of an injected dose being excreted unchanged. Normal rats had a rapid gludopa clearance of 50.9 +/- 9.6 ml min-1 kg-1 and elimination rate constant of 2.99 +/- 0.27 h-1. The mean residence time and half-life were 20.9 +/- 1.4 and 14.4 +/- 1.0 min, respectively. The apparent volume of distribution at steady state was 1.05 +/- 0.18 l kg-1. 3. No statistically significant differences were found in the main pharmacokinetic parameters between ARF and controls for either gludopa or its metabolite L-dopa. 4. In anephric rats and controls the kidneys were found to contribute about 68.5% and 67.2% to the elimination of gludopa and the metabolite L-dopa, respectively. 5. These results confirm that gludopa is an efficient pro-drug for L-dopa, and that the kidneys are the major site of gludopa metabolism. It seems likely that the renal specificity of gludopa persists in ARF.

A 37-year-old nulliparous woman presented with severe vaginal bleeding due to a primary immature teratoma of the uterus (Grade II on the Norris scale). The subsequent hysterectomy specimen showed well-differentiated endometrial adenocarcinoma. Mature glial implants were present on both ovaries and throughout the omentum. Postoperative recovery was uneventful and the patient received a course of pelvic radiotherapy. She has remained well with no evidence of recurrence. Primary benign solid teratoma of the uterus is rare. This appears to be the first reported case of primary immature uterine teratoma.
