We present the first manifestation of a Parrondo's effect in a continuous-time quantum walk (CTQW). In our protocol we consider a CTQW in the presence of time-dependent transition defect. Our results show that the alternation between defects, that individually are detrimental to the wavepacket spreading, can paradoxically enhance overall wavepacket propagation. Our findings pave the way for the exploration of unconventional mechanisms that can potentially harness the adverse effects of defects to enhance quantum transport., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

Multi-phonon physics is an emerging field that serves as a test bed for fundamental quantum physics and several applications in metrology, on-chip communication, among others. Quantum acoustic cavities or resonators are devices that are being used to study multi-phonon phenomena both theoretically and experimentally. In particular, we study a system consisting of a semiconductor quantum dot pumped by a driving laser, and coupled to an acoustic cavity. This kind of systems has proven to yield interesting multi-phonon phenomena, but the description of the quantum dot has been limited to a two-level system. This limitation restrains the complexity that a true semiconductor quantum dot can offer. Instead, in this work we consider a model where the quantum dot can have both bright and dark excitons, the latter being particularly useful due to their lower decoherence rates, because they do not present spontaneous photon emission. In this setup, we demonstrate that by fine-tuning the driving laser frequency, one is able to realise giant Rabi oscillations between the vacuum state and a dark exciton state with $N$-phonon bundles. From this, we highlight two outstanding features: first, we are able to create dark states excitations in the quantum dot without the usual external magnetic field needed to do so; and second, in a dissipative scenario where the acoustic cavity and the quantum dot suffer from losses, the system acts as a phonon gun able to emit $N$-phonon bundles., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

In this paper we make a detailed study of the role of coherent tunneling, on the photocurrent and power delivered by a quantum dot molecule (QDM) in the presence of solar light. We focus our analysis on the coherence driven by tunneling and its impact on the photovoltaic properties of the QDM. The coherence developed by the system raises as a resource from the interplay between the strength of the tunneling coupling, the QDM band alignment, and the coupling rates with the reservoirs of thermal phonons. Our results show that a QDM can deliver up to 30% more power than a single quantum dot, and our calculations of efficiency show coherence effects, which are consistent with the Second Law of Thermodynamics.

Mapping the behaviour of dark energy is a pressing task for observational cosmology. Phenomenological classification divides dynamical dark energy models into freezing and thawing, depending on whether the dark energy equation of state is approaching or moving away from $w=p/\rho=-1$. Moreover, in realistic dynamical dark energy models the dynamical degree of freedom is expected to couple to the electromagnetic sector, leading to variations of the fine-structure constant $\alpha$. We discuss the feasibility of distinguishing between the freezing and thawing classes of models with current and forthcoming observational facilities and using a parametrisation of the dark energy equation of state, which can have either behaviour, introduced by Mukhanov as fiducial paradigm. We illustrate how freezing and thawing models lead to different redshift dependencies of $\alpha$, and use a combination of current astrophysical observations and local experiments to constrain this class of models, improving the constraints on the key coupling parameter by more than a factor of two, despite considering a more extended parameter space than the one used in previous studies. We also briefly discuss the improvements expected from future facilities and comment on the practical limitations of this class of parametrisations. We derive a comparison principle for a degenerate elliptic partial differential equation without boundary conditions which arises naturally in optimal learning strategies. Our argument is direct and exploits the degeneracy of the differential operator to construct (logarithmically) diverging barriers.

We consider the problem of a decision-maker searching for information on multiple alternatives when information is learned on all alternatives simultaneously. The decision-maker has a running cost of searching for information, and has to decide when to stop searching for information and choose one alternative. The expected payoff of each alternative evolves as a diffusion process when information is being learned. We present necessary and sufficient conditions for the solution, establishing existence and uniqueness. We show that the optimal boundary where search is stopped (free boundary) is star-shaped, and present an asymptotic characterization of the value function and the free boundary. We show properties of how the distance between the free boundary and the diagonal varies with the number of alternatives, and how the free boundary under parallel search relates to the one under sequential search, with and without economies of scale on the search costs., Comment: 33 pages, 3 figures

We discuss the feasibility of using astrophysical observations of white dwarfs as probes of fundamental physics. We quantify the effects of varying fundamental couplings on the white dwarf mass-radius relation in a broad class of unification scenarios, both for the simple case of a polytropic stellar structure model and for more general models. Independent measurements of the mass and radius, together with direct spectroscopic measurements of the fine-structure constant in white dwarf atmospheres lead to constraints on combinations of the two phenomenological parameters describing the underlying unification scenario (one of which is related to the strong sector of the theory while the other is related to the electroweak sector). While currently available measurements do not yet provide stringent constraints, we show that forthcoming improvements, expected for example from the Gaia satellite, can break parameter degeneracies and lead to constraints that ideally complement those obtained from local laboratory tests using atomic clocks., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures

We discuss the optical response of a quantum molecule under the action of two lasers fields. Using a realistic model and parameters, we map the physical conditions to find three different phenomena reported in the literature: the tunneling induced transparency, the formation of Autler-Townes doublets, and the creation of a Mollow-like triplet. We found that the electron tunneling between quantum dots is the responsible for the different optical regime. Our results not only explain the experimental results in the literature but also give insights for future experiments and applications in optics using quantum dots molecules., Comment: To appear in Applied Physics Letters

We performed an observational study of the relation between the interstellar magnetic field alignment and star formation in twenty (20) sky regions containing Bok Globules. The presence of young stellar objects in the globules is verified by a search of infrared sources with spectral energy distribution compatible with a pre main-sequence star. The interstellar magnetic field direction is mapped using optical polarimetry. These maps are used to estimate the dispersion of the interstellar magnetic field direction in each region from a Gaussian fit, sigma_B. In addition to the Gaussian dispersion, we propose a new parameter, eta, to measure the magnetic field alignment that does not rely on any function fitting. Statistical tests show that the dispersion of the magnetic field direction is different in star forming globules relative to quiescent globules. We theoretically investigate laser induced quantum transport in a two-level quantum dot attached to electric contacts. Our approach, based on nonequilibrium Green function technique, allows to include thermal effects on the photon-induced quantum transport and excitonic coherent dynamics. By solving a set of coupled integrodifferential equations, involving correlation and propagator functions, we obtain the photocurrent and the dot occupations as a function of time. The characteristic coherent Rabi oscillations are found in both occupations and photocurrent, with two distinct sources of decoherence: incoherent tunneling and thermal fluctuations. In particular, for increasing temperature the dot becomes more thermally occupied which shrinks the amplitude of the Rabi oscillations, due to Pauli blockade. Finally, due to the interplay between photon and thermal induced electron populations, the photocurrent can switch sign as time evolves and its stationary value can be maximized by tunning the laser intensity., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

The wide set of control parameters and reduced size scale make semiconductor quantum dots attractive candidates to implement solid-state quantum computation. Considering an asymmetric double quantum dot coupled by tunneling, we combine the action of a laser field and the spontaneous emission of the excitonic state to protect an arbitrary superposition state of the indirect exciton and ground state. We employ ultrafast pump-probe spectroscopy to directly monitor electron tunneling between discrete orbital states in a pair of spatially separated quantum dots. Immediately after excitation, several peaks are observed in the pump-probe spectrum due to Coulomb interactions between the photo-generated charge carriers. By tuning the relative energy of the orbital states in the two dots and monitoring the temporal evolution of the pump-probe spectra the electron and hole tunneling times are separately measured and resonant tunneling between the two dots is shown to be mediated both by elastic and inelastic processes. Ultrafast (< 5 ps) inter-dot tunneling is shown to occur over a surprisingly wide bandwidth, up to ~8 meV, reflecting the spectrum of exciton-acoustic phonon coupling in the system.

We show a procedure for engineering effective interactions between two modes in a bimodal cavity. Our system consists of one or more two-level atoms, excited by a classical field, interacting with both modes. The two effective Hamiltonians have a similar form of a beam-splitter and quadratic beam-splitter interactions, respectively. We also demonstrate that the nonlinear Hamiltonian can be used to prepare an entangled coherent state, also known as multidimensional entangled coherent state, which has been pointed out as an important entanglement resource. We show that the nonlinear interaction parameter can be enhanced considering N independent atoms trapped inside a high-finesse optical cavity., Comment: To be published in Phys. Rev. A

We discuss the spectral lineshapes of N quantum dots in strong coupling with the single mode of a microcavity. Nontrivial features are brought by detuning the emitters or probing the direct exciton emission spectrum. We describe dark states, quantum nonlinearities, emission dips and interferences and show how these various effects may coexist, giving rise to highly peculiar lineshapes., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures

Semiconductor quantum dots coherently driven by pulsed laser are fundamental physical systems which allow studying the dynamical properties of confined quantum states. These systems are attractive candidates for a solid-state qubit, which open the possibility for several investigations in quantum information processing. In this work we study the effects of a specific decoherence process, the spontaneous emission of excitonic states, in a quantum dot molecule. We model our system considering a three-level Hamiltonian and solve the corresponding master equation in the Lindblad form. Our results show that the spontaneous emission associated with the direct exciton helps to build up a robust indirect exciton state. This robustness against decoherence allows potential applications in quantum memories and quantum gate architectures. We further investigate several regimes of physical parameters, showing that this process is easily controlled by tuning of external fields., Comment: To appear in Physical Review B

We present an experimental and theoretical study of a system consisting of two spatially separated self-assembled InGaAs quantum dots strongly coupled to a single optical nanocavity mode. Due to their different size and compositional profiles, the two quantum dots exhibit markedly different DC Stark shifts. This allows us to tune them into mutual resonance with each other and a photonic crystal nanocavity mode as a bias voltage is varied. Photoluminescence measurements show a characteristic triple peak during the double anticrossing, which is a clear signature of a coherently coupled system of three quantum states. We fit the entire set of emission spectra of the coupled system to theory and are able to investigate the coupling between the two quantum dots via the cavity mode, and the coupling between the two quantum dots when they are detuned from the cavity mode. We suggest that the resulting quantum V-system may be advantageous since dephasing due to incoherent losses from the cavity mode can be avoided.

We experimentally and theoretically investigate dephasing of zero dimensional microcavity polaritons in electrically tunable single dot photonic crystal nanocavities. Such devices allow us to alter the dot-cavity detuning in-situ and to directly probe the influence on the emission spectrum of varying the incoherent excitation level and the lattice temperature. By comparing our results with theory we obtain the polariton dephasing rate and clarify its dependence on optical excitation power and lattice temperature. For low excitation levels we observe a linear temperature dependence, indicative of phonon mediated polariton dephasing. At higher excitation levels, excitation induced dephasing is observed due to coupling to the solid-state environment. We investigate the spin-dependent transport properties of two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) systems formed in diluted magnetic semiconductors and in the presence of Rashba spin-orbit interaction in the framework of the scattering matrix approach. We focus on nanostructures consisting of realistic magnetic barriers produced by the deposition of ferromagnetic strips on heterostructures. We calculate spin-dependente conductance of such barrier systems and show that the magnetization pattern of the strips, the tunable spin-orbit coupling, and the enhanced Zeeman splitting have a strong effect on the conductance of the structure. We describe how these effects can be employed in the efficient control of spin polarization via the application of moderate fields.

We study the optical emission from single semiconductor quantum dots coupled to the optical modes of photonic crystal nanocavities. For dots that are both spectrally and spatially coupled, auto-correlation measurements reveal efficient single photon generation, with a drastically reduced lifetime due to the Purcell-effect. However, the multi-photon emission probability is enhanced compared to the same QD transition when it is detuned from the cavity mode by controlled $N_2$-deposition. This indicates the presence of an emission background that is shown to be related to the dot using photon cross-correlation spectroscopy. Photon temporal correlations persist even for large spectral detunings beyond $\Delta\lambda\sim-10 nm$, excluding the intrinsic QD continuum and phonon mediated processes as being responsible for the cavity mode emission background. We propose a mechanism based on photon induced shake up processes in the charged quantum dots, enhanced by the optical cavity.

In this paper we show that it is possible to switch the spin polarization of the photocurrent signal obtained from a single self-assembled quantum dot photodiode under the effect of elliptically polarized light by just increasing the light intensity. In the nonlinear mechanism treated here, intense elliptically polarized light creates an effective exchange interaction between the exciton spin states through the biexciton state. This effect can be used as a dynamical switch to invert the spin-polarization of the extracted photocurrent. We further show that the effect persists in realistic ensembles of dots, making this a powerful technique to dynamically generate spin-polarized electrons., Comment: Submitted to PRL

We develop a realistic model of Rabi oscillations in a quantum-dot photodiode. Based in a multi-exciton density matrix formulation we show that for short pulses the two-level models fails and higher levels should be taken into account. This affects some of the experimental conclusions, such as the inferred efficiency of the state rotation (population inversion) and the deduced value of the dipole interaction. We also show that the damping observed cannot be explained using \emph{constant} rates with fixed pulse duration. We demonstrate that the damping observed is in fact induced by an off-resonant excitation to or from the continuum of wetting layer states. We demonstrate theoretically that it is possible to use Rabi oscillations to coherently control the electron tunneling in an asymmetric double quantum dot system, a quantum dot molecule. By applying an optical pump pulse we can excite an electron in one of the dots, which can in turn tunnel to the second dot, as controlled by an external voltage. Varying the intensity of the pulse one can suppress or enhance the tunneling between the dots for given level resonance conditions. The coherent manipulation of quantum states is one of the main tasks required in quantum computation. In this paper we demonstrate that it is possible to control coherently the electronic position of a particle in a quantum-dot array. By tuning an external ac electric field we can selectively suppress the tunneling between dots, trapping the particle in a determined region of the array. The problem is treated non-perturbatively by a time-dependent Hamiltonian in the effective mass approximation and using Floquet theory. Intense AC electric fields on semiconductor structures have been studied in photon-assisted tunneling experiments with magnetic field applied either parallel (B_par) or perpendicular (B_per) to the interfaces. We examine here the electron dynamics in a double quantum well when intense AC electric fields F, and tilted magnetic fields are applied simultaneously. The problem is treated non-perturbatively by a time-dependent Hamiltonian in the effective mass approximation, and using a Floquet-Fourier formalism. For B_par=0, the quasi-energy spectra show two types of crossings: those related to different Landau levels, and those associated to dynamic localization (DL), where the electron is confined to one of the wells, despite the non-negligible tunneling between wells. B_par couples parallel and in-plane motions producing anti-crossings in the spectrum. However, since our approach is non-perturbative, we are able to explore the entire frequency range. For high frequencies, we reproduce the well known results of perfect DL given by zeroes of a Bessel function. We find also that the system exhibits DL at the same values of the field F, even as B_par non-zero, suggesting a hidden dynamical symmetry in the system which we identify with different parity operations. The return times for the electron at various values of field exhibit interesting and complex behavior which is also studied in detail. We find that smaller frequencies shifts the DL points to lower field F, and more importantly, yields poorer localization by the field. We analyze the explicit time evolution of the system, monitoring the elapsed time to return to a given well for each Landau level, and find non-monotonic behavior for decreasing frequencies., Comment: REVTEX4 + 11 eps figs, submitted to Phys.
